I did not care for the chocolate as the cake was very fluffy and light-lots of air holes. I prefer something dense. The whipped cream frosting was a nice balance to the sweet. I enjoyed the flavor and the filling of the lemon one. It seemed a bit more dense to me. The owner has lived some interesting places. If she is not busy take the time to ask "Have you always lived here?" You might get a story with your treat. If you like light and fluffy giant cupcakes you have found your spot. read more

Yummy cupcakes that were a crowd pleaser for my friend's birthday celebration! I stopped in after arriving in town to pick up cupcakes. I had tried to order a cake, but wasn't having luck finding a time in my workday to call when the shop was open. When I arrived there were about eight flavors to choose from in the case. The owner was friendly and actually offered to make me a cake that afternoon, but I didn't have enough time to wait in town that day. The flavors in the case were variations of a couple of flavors. All of the cupcakes are filled. There was chocolate cake with mousse, white cake with mousse, white cake with raspberry, white cake with lemon, and chocolate cake with raspberry. The cupcakes are huge. Most of us ended up enjoying our cupcakes one half at a time. The cake was moist and delicious. The frosting was light and fluffy, not a thick buttercream. We all liked that the frosting was different than what we expected. I don't typically experience sticker shock, but at $5 a cupcake I was a little shocked. Just a quick stop so a quick review! Small, local business. You can tell the owner cares about the place! There's a small selection but they all look good! We got the carrot cake and vanilla with chocolate mousse filling to go. The woman we interacted with was super friendly and informative! We came by at 11:10 on a Sunday morning for my mom's birthday and there was a few other people waiting outside. One woman tried the door and was snapped at by a woman on the other side saying that they weren't open yet (even though all their signs said 11am). The woman I presume is the owner said the cinnamon rolls were not out and they couldn't open without them. She opened the door a few minutes later and we all went in. The ladies working promptly told us about the cinnamon rolls and said they were for preorder only. My brother said, "So I can't buy any?" She changed her answer and said that he could buy some and asked how many. He took a moment to think and she shouted, "Two is the most you can have!" My other brother asked for a recommendation on a cupcake and they wouldn't give one. Needless to say, the customer service was not enjoyable. I bought two cupcakes: Chocolate Mousse and Caramel. As a newer resident to CB. I am always looking for the best places to take my friends and family when they are visiting. This is by far the best place in town to get cupcakes. My favorites are the white cake coconut cream and the chocolate cake peanut butter. You start by choosing white or chocolate cake and then you choose your filling. I don't know what the secret is,( I believe it's Ocean Air). But, I promise you, cupcakes will never be the same again. This is a darling little shop. I've read other reviews where people have commented on the service as unfriendly but I find that unfair. At this shop they use proper manners and etiquette and I appreciate that and find it refreshing. This shop is wonderful and the proof is in the cake. I recommend you order ahead of time. I came here a couple of weeks ago with my husband. It was out last stop before we headed back home to Portland. Boy was I glad that we stopped by. When we got home, we had the cupcakes and they were heavenly!! So much better than any cupcake joint in PDX! The owner is SO RUDE!!!!!!!!! SO RUDE..... My kids and I came to Cannon Beach for a short day trip with my best friend. My friend is a baker and loves to stop in to bakeries when we are out of town, support those fellow bakers. Well, this baker is mean as hell. Rude to me and my children, my friend mentioned that she has been wanting to stop in and check it out the bakery but she has never caught it during open hours. The owner snarked that she had the same hours every day. Well ok, so we started to take a look at the "goods". The bakery is one shelf of maybe 6 different cupcake flavors. Make sure you dont touch the glass at all too cause she will definitely snap at you, even if you are asking a question. I was ready to leave at this point but my son was promised a cupcake and I could tell it wasn't going to be easy to leave without either giving in and buying a cupcake or making a scene. Such RUDE ladies that run this store. They are closed on Wednesday so we came back to town Thursday to try one out. Door was WIDE OPEN at 2:15pm and we walk in to an empty cabinet which is fine, I get it, but the attitude?! The lady goes "you'll have to come back tomorrow and actually get here early!" To which I said "well that's a bummer, we're leaving town in the morning" and she goes "oh well, should have gotten here earlier!". Zero customer service skills! All of these reviews are true - Jae's cakes are DELICIOUS. The cupcakes are well worth it, however, if you are considering getting a wedding cake from Jae, I would advise against it. Being on the Oregon Coast, she essentially has a monopoly on the wedding cake industry, as no one else (professionally anyways) does wedding cakes in Clatsop County, and certainly doesn't deliver (1 star for delicious cake). Here's what happened: We paid our deposit for our wedding cake 9 months before the wedding - at the time she told us we were her only wedding that weekend. GREAT, FANTASTIC! Well, as time went on, it was difficult to contact Jae. When she did finally return phone calls or respond to emails, she was usually less than pleasant. We paid her in full 3 months before the wedding, and we told her the timeline of our events for the weekend and told her when she would be able to deliver the cake. A month before the wedding, I send her another email, again telling her when she could deliver the cake, and letting her know when our flowers were being delivered, as she was going to need these roses for the cake. A week before the wedding I received a voicemail from her telling me that she would be delivering the cake the day before and had discussed this with our venue behind my back. After a day or two of phone-tag, I was able to finally reach Jae and inform her that delivering the cake the day before is not an option as the flowers would not be there for her then, and that it was our agreement that she would set up the cake, not us. At this point she informs me that she has 3 (THREE) weddings including mine this weekend. Quickly turning into Bridezilla, I informed her that I did not care - we made an arrangement, she was paid for her services, and I expected my cake, on Saturday. We did agree that she could deliver the cake 1 and a half hours earlier than planned - which was exactly the time we began to have access to our venue at all - we literally could not have had it delivered any earlier. The day of the wedding comes. The flowers are delivered, and Jae is no where to be seen. She had said she would deliver the cake at 1:30 on the wedding day - she did not show up until 4. With guests arriving at 5, the ceremony beginning at 5:30, and the reception beginning in the same venue as the ceremony at 6, we had no time to spare. She delivers the cake, INTERRUPTS our wedding portraits to inform me that it is here saying, "It is beautiful" (at this point, I was nothing short of bitchy to her - we are nearing my tipping point). The rest of the evening goes off without a hitch. The next day, my sister send me a screenshot of her friend's Facebook status telling a story about how she help "some cake lady" load a cake into my wedding venue the day of my wedding - apparently she had attempted to take the cake DOWN stairs in an attempt to get into the venue. From what I read, Jea was upset that she couldn't get into the venue - What do you expect when you are 2 and a half hours late?! This is the straw that finally broke my back. Yes, the cake was delicious. But, if you want a wedding day devoid of stress related to if you will even have a cake at your reception, this is not the cake lady for you. read more

Heard about the Cinnamon Rolls on Yelp and had to give them a try. The reviews DO NOT lie! We got there 15 mins before they opened at 11:00am (Sunday only) and were first in line. These are some of the best cinnamon rolls I have had in a long time. The roll is soft with a true sweet cinnamon filling. No raisins. The frosting is a sugar frosting (not cream cheese). Enjoyed one fresh from the oven and brought another home. It heated well the next day and was just as good! But I'm glad I made an exception for Simply Cakes by Jae. Jae uses premium ingredients and combines them with care and attention. We came on Sunday at about 11 am and left with large cupcakes and a very large cinnamon roll. Sure, the cupcakes cost $5. If you want cheap baked goods, go for the industrial supply bakeries in one of the big box stores. Cheaper ingredients there are turned into mass produced fluff. If you want a beautiful cake that tastes like chocolate and not brown crayon, if you want butter and cream and not shortening and powdered sugar paste, spend the money and get the best of the best. I can safely say these were the best cupcakes I have ever had! I have walked past the cute storefront in Cannon Beach for seven years and FINALLY stopped in to check it out and grab a couple on my way to visit a friend while in town. I will now be a regular! The store is so cute and Jae and the co-worker I met were so friendly. The chocolate mousse cupcake was so good and the fresh cream on top was just right. Sometimes cupcake frosting can be too heavy and sweet for my taste, but this was the perfect topping for the perfect cupcake. I also got a raspberry and a lemon curd, for my friend to choose from. So I went back the next day to grab a coconut cream cupcake (sold out the day before) and a couple to share with my husband before I headed back to Portland (and it was Sunday, so I picked up a cinnamon roll, too--and she threw in a cookie free of charge). May I point out, the stars are only for the cupcakes. NOT the service. Yes the cupcakes were amazing even at $5.00 each BUT we were "assisted" by the rudest woman we've ever met. She was too busy to help us get our expensive cupcakes because she was too busy licking her fingers clean of her own food she had been scarfing down. We had come here the previous weekend and a much more pleasant woman had helped us out and even cut our cupcakes in half for the whole family to share. We loved it so much we decided to come back again. Little did we know we'd come face to face with the devil herself. When we went to ask if she could cut them in half she laughed rolled her eyes and said "no but you can" so we asked if she had any plastic knives and she responded "no," again in her sassy way. I ordered a cake for a large event (175 people) SIX MONTHS in advance. One week prior to the event, she called wanting to change the delivery DAY and time, which we had arranged SIX MONTHS in advance. She was requesting the change because she now had two other deliveries on that same day. I know when we placed our order that we were the only cake she had scheduled for that day, because I asked at the time we placed our order. Our venue was not available to us to have the cake delivered on a different day. On the day of the event, Jae arrived very late with the cake. She was then upset because no one was waiting by the door to let her in. We had been waiting, for an hour, but as I previously stated, she was late, and we were setting up for a large event. I had tried to call her for an update on her status, but she was unavailable via the only contact number I had. Once we realized she had finally arrived, we rushed to let her in. She offered no apologies, or acknowledgement to the fact she was late. She was, however, moody, snippy and angry with me and my staff. She barely finished setting up the cake moments before the start of our event. I am not vindictive. I am truly just relaying an honest account of my experience with placing a large order. My husband I and recently got married down in Cannon Beach and ordered our wedding cake through Jae. Let me start out by saying, that was the best cake we have EVER had, no question, my husband and I are in agreement that our 1 year anniversary cannot come soon enough, we are ready to dig in! We live in Washington, and let me tell you, planning an out of state wedding, even one state away, was not always the easiest feat. Jae responded to my email right away (which was not always the case with other vendors), she accommodated my short notice request for a tasting and blew the other bakeries out of the water!
