While in the Madison Valley, I contacted Simms seeking a place to try on their full line of wader options (men and women). Simms directed me to their West location of The River's Edge- across from the Simms Production Facility. We were greeted upon entry, but were given time and space to openly browse, which we always appreciate. All of the staff were warm and friendly. We asked for assistance to explore and try on various waders. I forewarned them that it was going to be quite the adventure. The salesman Jack, was totally awesome!!!! He took the time to listen to my positive 30 year history with my custom Simms waders as well as my current needs and preferences. This was not a 911, as my waders are still performing. It was more of a proactive possible purchase visit. Jack was extremely knowledgable, patient, and committed to helping me. He knows the product line and referenced the posted size charts. He remained personable and did not grow weary despite the number of waders he retrieved and repackaged. Jack also had me try on the available sample neoprene footies in various sizes. At his suggestion, we brought in both pairs of my wading boots. Sorry about the dried up gravel :0). With Jack's full support, I was able to leave with a pair of woman's G3 waders feeling fully satisfied that I was given the time, patience and attention that I needed. This business is the bomb! My sister-in-law booked a fly fishing excursion for my wife and I. We have never fly fished as we always fish streams and lakes using rod and reel. So, this was an exciting experience. Our guide was Luke. Fantastic individual. Extremely knowledgeable and a true professional. Great sense of humor (Mend upstream Bob, mend. Bob, Bob, mend).... We totally enjoyed ourselves. But, I do recommend sitting in the front of the boat. My wife caught all the fish. About 25. Nothing really left for me. She landed a beautiful 15 inch Trout. What an experience and a fantastic day. I highly recommend this outfit. If you can request Luke, we recommend that too. But, be aware. You are paying for an experience and instruction. He IS a teacher. He will stress technique and his goal is to make sure you learn. He sold us on fly fishing. We fished the Yellowstone River and had a blast. Scheduled a fly fishing trip with a guide through the store's website. They set us up with Sam to teach us, we drove to Lower Madison River and we fished all day with a lunch break in between. Sam was amazing and so helpful! I actually learned a lot, not only about fly fishing, lots about the area too. I would highly recommend if you are new to fly fishing and want to learn to go on the guided trip with Sam! read more

Employees in this shop were helpful & knowledgeable, but we had an unexpected disappointment with our guide. As a 1st-timer at fly fishing, I took longer to apply the technique correctly floating down river. Though highly skilled, our guide exhibited a gross void of professionalism as a teacher. He displayed agitation over patience once we'd pulled to the riverbank for me to practice again, noting he was "flustered" in working with me because he'd never had anyone he'd taught take so long to catch on. I can't remember when I've felt so belittled. We weren't pleased on follow-up w River's Edge that they gave no clear indication of whether our guide would be told he'd acted unprofessional. We invested $500 in this outing & chose the high road after his treatment of me to enjoy the day, get acquainted with him & learn to fly fish & catch some, all of which worked out. Nonetheless, his treatment of a beginner, and his employer's lack of intent to note he treated a customer poorly, make both me & my husband STRONGLY suggest to shop around other fly fishing venture businesses in the Bozeman area that might do a better job of listening to & being proactive on a valid customer complaint. read more

I'm sorry to read the recent review by someone who had an unfavorable experience with their guide. My husband and I visited Bozeman a couple of weeks ago and this shop was highly recommended to me by a local fisherman. We had a great experience with the folks in the shop, and a very wonderful day with our guide (Rollie). He not only was knowledgeable, but extremely patient with my husband and me while we made lots of beginner mistakes, including hooking trees and other things...I also really liked Rollie's sense of humor. Trying something like this for the first time can be difficult, and at times both my husband and I were hard on ourselves. But he kept us upbeat, and in the end, especially the afternoon, we caught 13 fish, except I apparently let the BIG one go, didn't I Rollie?.....(stated with humor). I'm really happy we experienced this, and I believe we made the right choice with this shop. read more

I fished on March 24 with Steve Smith and it was the best guided trip I have ever experienced! Even with tough weather conditions we were on 16-18" trout all day. My right elbow was so sore I am the one that said it was time to head in around 5pm. I believe Steve would have kept me out there until dark if I would not have given in. 40-50 to net and was just in disbelief how well that Upper Madison fished. I am already looking forward to when I can get back out there. read more
