As of 4.15.24 I give a zero star or negative if I could. My husband got his car "fixed" here two weeks ago. For his car. Overheating he paid $5k two weeks later his car is over heating again and on top of that all the oil leaked out of his engine. He's never had an issue with oil leaking this is crazy. We've been cheated before and this has the makings of being cheated out of thousands again. I'm truly disappointed we thought this shop was going to be the exception. Unfortunately it is not. I'm still hoping they will make it right but we will see. As of 4/22/24 update. I received communication from I believe the owner they arranged to have my husband's vehicle picked up within 45 minutes within 24 business hours they fix the problem. It fell under their guarantee so we did not have to pay for any of the repairs so far so good we just received the vehicle today, I am very impressed with how they handled and the situation and how quickly they handled it read more

I brought a car to Simmons today for an inspection before my daughter purchased it. The technician assured me they would include photos of the undercarriage, as I wasn't allowed in the shop. After a quick 15-minute inspection, they claimed the water pump needed replacement--even though the car has only 39K miles. They said it had leaked previously but wasn't leaking now. $500 to replace. They also recommended replacing the cabin filter for $112, even though it's a $10 part that takes about a minute to change with no tools. The oil change was priced at $91 for just four quarts of oil and a filter. When I received the inspection report, the promised undercarriage photos were missing. The technician claimed they "wouldn't post" and had been deleted--yet other photos were included. This wasn't a true pre-purchase safety inspection but rather an exaggerated upsell on repairs. We became big Simmons Automotive fans way back when my college son's car was making a funny noise and he was needing to drive it home for Spring break and they couldn't fit his car in but said it was safe to drive home and we could repair it here. Recently, my son's car was overheating. He drove it to the nearest garage, where they diagnosed a blown head gasket. They recommended replacing the radiator and an entire engine rebuild for $8,000. After hearing this, we had it towed to Simmons. Simmons found an unclipped upper radiator hose. Our bill for everything they repaired was $900. Thank goodness for trustworthy businesses like Simmons. Not only did they save us $7,000, they called to follow up and then to thank us for our business. So lucky that we found them. read more

I will say prior to the day of service my experience had been good but limited to phone conversations. I picked this shop bc I believe in putting money back into the community. Horrible experience. You never really want to have to find a good mechanic when you need one and are relatively new to an area, but I was in that position recently and Simmons Automotive was as good as it gets. I called them on Monday because my oil light was coming on after having had it changed 5 weeks ago. They got me in early the next morning and from beginning to end, the customer service and mechanical expertise were spot on. They were friendly and polite (especially Austin), efficient, did a great job communicating the problem and the solution (valve replacements for several slow leaks). The cost seemed reasonable and I didn't feel like I was being ripped off. My car was ready for pick up later that day as promised. I also appreciated that they didn't talk down to me because I am a woman (this has happened before, so I was braced to stand up for myself or leave, but fortunately didn't have to). They did a complete overhaul of my Silverado. Since I know about 10% of what goes on under the hood of my truck I want a shop to educate me and explain the issues and resolutions. Simmons did all that for me and my wife which put us at ease having the work done at this shop. The employees are very friendly, they call multiple times a day with updates to keep you posted, great customer service and they hit the date they gave us for completion. I generally frown when having to find a new mechanic, but upon my first call to this place, I had nothing but a wonderful experience. I took a car I was considering purchasing for my son to be inspected here on a moments notice and they worked me into their schedule. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable of cars but they found a lot more things than I had during my own inspection of the car. I specifically wanted them to check the mechanical side of things but they found numerous body issues I had not even noticed. The car ran better than other like cars I had recently test driven. Shifted nice, seemed to have power but had one major issue I wasn't expecting; a leaky head gasket. Totally saved me from having to pay for this repair later and in the end, worth paying the inspection fee. They are very responsive and friendly and left me with a great experience even though I didn't end up purchasing the car I had found elsewhere. I've always had problems with mechanics around both Thurston & Pierce county, they would always misdiagnose me or spring last minute charges that I had no idea about. I had a major problem with my car last minute, it wouldn't start & was making horrible noises along with some other issues I was noticing. I decided to check around on Yelp & found nothing but great reviews for this shop so I called Simmons & they were able to get me in really fast, made sure to tell me every single thing I would be charged for before they did it & Dean gave me his honest opinion on what repairs were the most crucial & which ones could wait a bit. They diagnosed the problem quickly & even showed me my old parts & the new parts they were going to put in to let me know they weren't just making stuff up about them being faulty. Dean went above & beyond to make sure I was taken care of & that my car was in a safe condition to drive. Not only that, but the stuff they quoted me for was cheaper than the shady mechanics I had been to in the past! They also have an amazing warranty policy. I will never trust any other shop to bring my car into. The whole staff is incredibly helpful & patient & answered every question & concern I had. Mr. Simmons himself messaged me and let me know about all the changes that they have made since our first not-so-great interaction there. He also invited us to come back in and get our van serviced, and he would take the diagnostic fee that we incurred last time out of our final cost. We took a second chance and were very impressed. I could tell they had made some big changes with their staffing and policies, and how they communicate with their customers. This means a lot to me that they listened to our feedback and cared about our experience. The service we had was very professional. The staff clearly communicated what they were doing and the costs associated with it. And our van was done in a timely manner. We will continue to take our van to Simmons. My mechanic/shop that I used exclusively moved away. I was in the need of a trustworthy and reliable automotive repair shop. I had been unable to find one that I could fully trust my vehicles with. Last month we had someone come to our house and offer us an Auto Service Program for Simmons Automotive. We were new to the area and needed to find a place to take our vehicles so I went ahead and purchased two in hopes that it would be a good deal. A couple of weeks ago, my husband took his Ford Ranger in to get an oil change and also we wanted them to take a look at one of the wheel bearings (note that everyone we talked to thought it was an issue with the wheel bearing). The oil change was free as part of the Auto Service Program that we purchased. They took a look a the wheel bearing and determined that they needed to be re-packed. After calling to get authorization from our extended warranty, it was determined that it wasn't covered. Knowing that we needed to get it repaired, we authorized the repairs. Apparently after re-packing the bearing they took it for a test drive and the wheels were still doing the same thing. They greased the rest of the bearings and again nothing changed with the symptoms. It was determined that the tires were cupping which was causing the uneven ride. They ultimately rotated the tires and gave my husband a call. The best part of this is that after doing all that work, they were honest enough to let us know that since they mis-diagnosed the issue all of the repairs would be free of charge. Obviously we were elated and couldn't believe it. We would have never known the difference and it makes us feel better that we can take our vehicles in without fear of getting ripped off. In addition, my husband was very complimentary about the staff and their friendliness. After dropping off the car before any of the above happened, he called me to tell me "Honey, you are going to really like this place. They are so friendly." Coming from him, I knew it had to be a great place to make that impression on him. Thanks Simmons for great service and the honesty that you showed in dealing with our vehicle. We will be coming back soon to bring my car in and will be planning on using Simmons for any future repairs. read more

Simmons guys found my problem and worked hard to get me on the road again. Car wouldn't start until I turned the ignition key the second time. Brought it in to Simmons Automotive and they isolated the problem - a random failing alternator that was draining the battery thus reducing the available amperage to start the car. Simmons encountered a sourcing problem getting a new alternator but solved the problem with a new replacement. The car starts all the time now and I'm very satisfied with the service that Simmons gave me. They are a hard-working crew and try to give their best. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Finding a good mechanic is hard enough, but finding a honest one can be just as hard. These folks are so warm and seem really helpful except that the service falls flat on it's face. Like I said before, I really wanted to like these guys however after getting my diagnosis I was discussed with them. First of all, I'm not a big car guy but with YouTube I can do my fair share of car repairs, however a transmission is not something I want to deal with. So when mine started acting up I dropped by for a diagnosis. They were very helpful and seemed to have that family owned business everyone knows and loves. It wasn't until after the diagnosis, that things started getting fishy... I understand paying for a diagnosis, but if I bring my tranny to get looked at and then cleaned why are you charging me $140 to look in the tranny and then another $250 to clean it? Also they told me that I needed a bunch of tune ups done like new spark plugs, wires, and timing belt. Little did they know that I just replaced all that stuff 6 months ago! How are they going to try and sell me on hundreds of dollars worth of work that I just had done!!! Hold on to your hats because here is the real kicker. They also told me that my exhaust manifold had a leak and was the reason my truck was making a fluttering sound, (also a reason why I took it in), but when I got home I found out the screws were just loose. They didn't even bother to spend 2 seconds and tighten some screws to fix a tiny problem! Instead they wanted to sell me another $250 of work to get it fixed!!! All in all I was so highly disappointed in the service I received and would NOT recommend this place to anyone who actually wants stuff they NEED repaired. read more

While the people that work there are as sweet as can be, I still left feeling completely ripped off! I spent $90 for a "diagnosis" which consisted of a guy looking under my hood, doing a quick test drive and then telling me I needed new spark plugs. Simple as my plugs miss firing. Went home and put in new plugs. Same problem... Well that's because I needed a complete new transmission!!! How could you not feel that?? How could you say spark plugs?? Horrible mechanic! I really feel I deserve a refund! That has to be the worse miss diagnosis ever! I came back the next day and explained to them is not the plugs, I changed them out like suggested. We need to figure this out guys. I just gave you $100 the day before to figure this out! Told me I should make a appointment for them to take a closer look. 5 days from then... They were more than polite and professional. They were also good communicators who kept us informed about their progress and the cost. The power steering went out suddenly in my truck. We get our oil changed here, so they were the first place I thought of to take my truck for repair. Not only were they able to squeeze us in an appointment, but when it was discovered that my truck would not be ready same day, they gave us a ride home! Brought my car in a few months ago because of shifting problems. Quoted me $85 for a diagnostic. Went with it and couldn't find anything. I replaced my spark plugs at home and changed transmission fluid as they told me it was darker than normal and my plugs were dirty. Was quoted almost $600 to do all of that which can be done at home. Fixed those problems and the problem still persisted with the shifting. Had my brother look in the hood the next day, and come to find out my oil was low. Simmons never told me. I called that day and they just told me the only diagnostic they did was from the problem that I had told them. Meaning they didn't do a full diagnostic as I had thought. Will not be bringing my car back there again. 2 stars because they were nice. But didn't do the job that I had paid them to go. read more

If you look through my reviews, you see that I almost always review food. Until now. Bear with me, because this is a long review, and I know I would have appreciated seeing this when I was looking around for shops (I am a total car n00b). I had a really bad experience at another automotive shop in Tacoma, (I'm not going to write a review for that place - it's water under the bridge, and I was naive so it wasn't the shop's fault), so I was really cautious about finding a place that I could trust. I was pretty sure my serpentine belts needed to be changed (I called my out-of-state dad and he diagnosed the problem), so I called three places around where I lived and worked and asked for a quote. The first two places I called gave me two different numbers, but Dean at Simmons was the first and only person to offer to have me stop by for a free evaluation of what's wrong. Even though I didn't take him up on that offer, I did end up making an appointment with them because they had the cheapest quote. I hung out in their waiting room while I waited for my friend to pick me up when I dropped off my car. Their waiting room is really clean - there's stuff for the kids and a Keurig with coffee for anyone to partake. They told me they would call me once they found out what was wrong. Even though I had an idea of what the problem was going to be, and had let them know in advance what I wanted to have replaced, Dean still called me to let me know that the problem was. Not only that, but they did not proceed to replace the serpentine belts until I called them back and confirmed that I was okay with it and was okay with the cost. They also called me multiple other times throughout the day to update me about their inspection - my oil might have needed changing according to the sticker in my car, my transmission fluid was dirty - and to inquire whether I wanted to address those issues. Dean didn't push me too hard to get anything done, and was very respectful about my input. I also loved that he gave me suggestions about when to come back for a free evaluation to get those things checked. I was really happy after all of this, but what drove me to review this place was that Dean went above and beyond trying to contact me to let me know that my car was ready. My phone wasn't getting their calls, so he emailed me, called my boyfriend, and left him a message. Other thoughts/TL;DR - great great great great great customer service. Consistent and constant communication - not pushy! - good hours: 7am until 5pm Monday through Friday (most places were 8-5, which is when I work) - clean waiting room, with free coffee - accepts credit cards - check out their website for discounts/coupons - hilarious street signs! their sign right now says "waiting on a sign?" and "we love you taco", and their sign on google street view says "welcome usga and shooter mcgavin" I will be referring everyone I know to Simmons! Used YELP to assist in looking for a shop near home. Truck blew a spark plug in the head. The noise was a big 'unknown' for us. Sounded like a show stopper. The initial phone call with Sara was painless and professional to get the work started. (Huge trust issues in the past when not using dealership mechanics in the past.) This is the best shop I have ever been to. They are honest, fair and go above and beyond to meet my needs. I've been coming here for the past three years and everyone is always super helpful and friendly. They always try to work around my schedule and I really feel like they care about their customers. I am the kind of person who is willing to work on cars to a point. I've changed tons of cars oil, brakes, swapped lines, hoses, etc in my day. But I know where my limits are and they stop at what I thought was a transmission problem. I was please to find Simmon's Automotive was nearby and had good reviews and was offering a free check-engine-light special. I booked an appointment and never looked back. The front desk staff is awesome and couldn't be nicer. They gave me step-by-step quotes, updates, and phone calls to keep me informed on what was being done. They never once suggested anything that was beyond what I brought the car in there for (Which let's be honest, that's what gives mechanics a bad name. The old bait-and-switch! You take it in for an oil change next thing you know they're recommending you do some crazy change and upgrade and $500 later you have no clue what happened). They gave me what I feel was an honest price (and I know for a fact saved me around a thousand dollars over the Ford dealership that my wife initially booked) and I never once felt taken advantage of. After one over-night stay in their shop the car was out and felt better than new! I would highly recommend this shop to anyone in the area!! read more

AMAZING customer service. I came in with some major coolant leaks to my Buick Lesabre, and they were not pushy, they did not try to upsell me, they just told me exactly what was wrong with my car and gave me a quote to fix it. I know absolutely nothing about cars, so knowing these guys are looking out for me is amazing. They did a follow up check a week later just to make sure everything was running smoothly, and called me after a month or so to check in again.
