I had wanted to take a firearms safety course for awhile. I wanted clarity on how to operate a gun & most of all how to be safe around them - guns. The time to learn about gun safety in my life was now. I'm older & wiser (I think) but most of all calmer about life. When I was a teen growing up in Africa, I had two uncles who were in the army & went on to become police officers. One of those uncles stayed with me (I had a large master bedroom with extra beds) & would often bring a cache of guns he would place under his bed. Knowing now what I know - I consider myself lucky I didn't accidentally fire off any of those guns I picked up - when he wasn't around! You name it I held it - semi automatics, RPGs, AK47s, etcetera ... honestly there was a Rambo assortment of weapons under that bed ... yikes! A coworker had taken Silvercores firearms safety course & highly recommended I sign up. I did sign up a few months ago & just recently completed the two day in person course. Heads up Alert - I'm going to share with you major, major tips so you can successfully pass this course to obtain your PAL (Possession & Acquisition Licence) which enables you to own & buy guns. You must complete each of the prep quizzes in the links I've shared - if there's 10 quizzes, complete ALL 10 quizzes! Study out the following guns - single & double action revolvers, Glock 45, bolt action rifle, hitch rifle, Lever Action Rifle, Pump Action & Semi Automatic Action(Ruger). You will have two in class quizzes, each consisting of 50 multiple choice questions. You will also have two practical in class tests. You will not be firing off any guns in this class. You can download the manual - 300 pages. Glance through it but don't memorize it. Mythbusters By taking the CFSC, you will not become The Accountant - an assassin - nor the Jackel (The Day of the Jackel 2024 - btw excellent British production) - super sniper - & be able to bring down targets 5 miles away. 007? - forget about it & leave that to James Bond on the big screen. Firearms are sold only to licenced PAL holders in Canada. Firearms in Canada are used solely for hunting or target practice at the gun range. Canada does not have the infamous 'Castle' rule ala Texas. Makes for an interesting scenario - if Dahmer breaks into your home & starts ticking off your loved ones, one by one, do you approach him with a butter knife!? Most of the 'big, black, scary' guns (semi automatics) are banned in Canada. Come to class relaxed & ready to learn everything - gun safety. When answering the quizzes, think gun safety first. Funny story - my brother got tripped up on a question - are you allowed to fire bullets at a stop sign? His mind was like - yeah, if it's in my backyard! LOL. The answer is - nope. No picture taking or recording allowed in class. There is a Subway a 100 metres from here (Delta location) for lunch or bring your own. Very poor refund policy as noted by someone else below. Also will not retroactively apply discounts either, "It's policy". Yeah ok, I worked in retail for 10+ years, reversing a credit card charge is not that difficult. Customer service is "Find a way to say yes, not find a way to say no". Having said all that, if I could give the instructors a separate review, they would get 5 stars. Simon and Travis, taught the course VERY well for both days. Never confusing, never boring. I recently took the fire arms safety course with Silvercore at Cabellas in Nanaimo. I am a novice when it come to guns (handled them twice in my life) so I thought I should write a review for those with no experience. My instructor was Simon and what a pleasure it was right from the start. He handled questions and students with grace and professionalism. I never felt intimidated or like I shouldn't be there. The guns, ammo, terms etc were all foreign to me in the beginning. However by the end of the two day course with Simons guidance and instruction I passed and feel confident with the guns we handled and I am looking forward to my next course. I completed both my CFSC and CORE education with Silvercore and they were great. The PAL training was very informative, straight forward (no fluff). Mike was very knowledgeable and patient with the students. As for the CORE, Simon took a great approach to the training by presenting his real life experiences to the course. It made it personable and way more interesting than just flicking through a slideshow. They also offer great deals on other courses when you take their courses! Just completed the course at the JI for the gun safety course, had it with Simon. He is indeed a carebear/terminator hybrid. He is an interesting fellow, just wished I had more time to ask him questions about his background as it seems as though hes lived a very interesting life! I'm a complete novice with guns, and if you count COD/battlefield thats as familiar as it'll get. At first I was intimidated by the information but Simon broke down all the information so we knew what we needed to know. Handling the guns at first was very intimidating at first and some times I had no idea what the hell I was doing. Simon was very patient with all the students and corrected their mistakes if he saw any..especially if your finger was near the trigger(don't ask how I know). His stories were funny and relevant to the course material. Day 2 everything came together for the written and practical test. Would recommend to anyone, and if you can get Simon dooo it. Too bad he hates hand guns and would rather chuck a rock at someone. WIll be looking to do the Handgun 1 course next year when I have more time! read more

I took the non-restricted/restricted firearms safety course at Silvercore this past weekend. Eric and Greg were great. The lectures of what would normally be boring course material were entertaining and educational. They really drill home the key points you need to know/understand to pass the course. The jokes and anecdotes that are embedded into the material really help you remember - because whilst you might not remember one of the finer nuances of firearms legislation in Canada on the exam, you'll probably remember their anecdote/joke about what your "Cousin Ted" or that guy, GunNinja1234 on YouTube said about it and get the right answer. The practical training was on point and drilled home what you need to do to pass that part of the exam. The only negative I can really point out is that a couple (out of about 14? or so) of the firearms used for the practical were really well used and had less then reliable actions / locks - until you figure out that yeah, it's the gun, not you, you might sit there trying to operate it and feel like an idiot (perhaps more than you already are... here's looking at you Cousin Ted). But to be fair, these firearms were operated hundreds of times each in two days and who really wants to waste a shiny new firearm on people who can't tell their head from their a.... ction. Most of the folks in the course figured out the subtleties of each firearm in short order. I can only suggest that you ask if you're not sure and you'll more than likely receive confirmation that you're doing it right. Unless your name is Ted, in which case it's just you. I think about 30% of the class was comprised of women, including two teenage girls. Not gonna lie, I was expecting a sword fight (demonstrating my ignorance of Canadian gun culture). It was nice to see some diversity in the classroom. read more

Took the non-restricted/restricted course from Silvercore which they held at the Croatian Cultural Centre in Vancouver a while back and waited until I got my PAL/RPAL to write up a review. The course was great, held over two days. The instructors were great. They managed to keep the class engaged over a long period of time with a good sense of humor, likeable attitudes and attentive teaching methods. I honestly couldn't have imagined the course going any better then it did. The students received a lot of time handling the inert weapons and everything was clearly explained. I was nervous about failing but they did a great job teaching in a way that even a sleep deprived, overworked person could retain. I would have no qualms recommending them to anyone interested in obtaining a firearms license or doing any sort of training. TL;DR - Great staff, great sense of humor, cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

I recently completed my PAL course with Greg Lukan as my instructor, I found the course to be very well structured and thanks to Gregs teaching style its easy to remember what you've been taught and why. I usually just shut down after an hour in classes but he made it fun and informative and I had no problem remembering what id been taught. They have a great selection of firearms to practice on and provide lots of time to get used to each of them. Do yourself a favour if you want to do your PAL course and book Silvercore and if your lucky enough you might get Greg on it too. read more

The company's refund / credit policy is not conducive to good customer service. I was unable to make my training due to a sick grandmother needing immediate care, I called the next business day after the training finished and asked to be put into the next course with an empty spot; I was told that unless I could provide written proof from a doctor that I was assisting my grandmother that day that they would charge me in full for another course. Not pleased with the lack of customer service and will be taking my money elsewhere. read more

I did the restricted and non-restricted and I messed up on the paperwork. I then contacted the office and they were being very helpful and told me some dates the instructor would be available to redo the paperwork and I went in today and i got there at 920 and the email said 9 to 930 I tried to be there at 9 but i was still in the time frame the email said and the instructor was immediately mad. And told me i had to wait for the next break because he can't stop the class for me. Witch makes sense but he didn't say what time the next break was at. As i didn't want to disturb the class i phoned the silvercore office to see if they know what time the breaks were at and they didn't know and they said they will find out. Then they called the instructor and after that i received a call saying in 15 minutes they will be having a break. Then after waiting a bit more Ken came out of the classroom angry and saying "what did i tell you? I will sign the paper work on the next break!" And then he told me that i should of been there at 9 and he seen the email. (Witch said 9 to 930) He was very rude at the end. But because of the office being kind I give 2 stars instead of 1 read more

Great instructors, Michael and Eric, made the two days fly by. I was concerned that the course might be a boring, as I had a good level of knowledge of the course content prior to the class. I took the PAL unrestricted and restricted course. The instructors were personable and gave lots of time to prepare for the practical exam, and provided a good and comprehensible summary of what was needed to pass the multiple choice exam. A little more demonstration with each individual gun would have been nice (I took a demerit for something I felt I couldn't have known on my own and wasn't shown) but they were always super responsive and helpful when asked questions. read more
