Food 3 stars: Large menu of classic Americanized Chinese Food in huge portions. They even had Egg Foo Young and Moo Goo Gai Pan on the menu that you don't see often anymore. We got chicken wings, scallion pancake, pork and shrimp dumplings, and pork soup dumplings. The chicken wings had a mountain of fried garlic on top of them. We didn't prefer it, but garlic lovers would love this appetizer. The scallion pancake was solid--thin and crispy with scallions throughout. The pork and shrimp dumplings were our favorite, filled with ground pork, and whole pieces of shrimp, served with an awesome sauce that brought everything together. The soup dumplings were not that great. They looked like they were steamed a bit too long, and the soup had leaked through. Would not get these again.

I had been to Northern cafe a few times, and recently it seems that both the food and the customer…read moreservice has been lacking. I took my family there recently and the food was acceptable to eat, but I would not say it was a good representation of what it used to be. The beef soup noodle was generally lacking in strong savory flavor and the noodles were overcooked. The dumplings were also lacking in flavor. For these reasons I will give Northern Cafe 3-stars. However, I must add that I am being very generous, since I do not take away stars for one incident of poor service. The service was horrendous, from the beginning to the end of the meal, it was an awful experience. To begin, there was no greeting, and this is a frequent problem. Customers are left to stand in the lobby with no direction or acknowledgement of their presence. The staff sometimes look your way to ignore you until you confront them and ask for a table, which they may not give you until you ask the right person. The server did not write down our order and forgot some of it. They never came around to check on us. The food came out in a scattered fashion. Eventually when we were finished eating, no server came to ask us if we wanted the check or any boxes to go. After getting their attention, I received the bill, but they didnt take my payment. They never came around again, I told my family to leave without me and maybe they will notice we are finished and I am holding the bill and my cars in the air. No service again for what seemed like an eternity sitting at an empty table with food I at one time wanted to take home, but now I was just desperate to get out. Eventually I catch the eye of some other staff, not my server, who never came back, and they flagged someone else from the kitchen to take care of my payment. Not surprisingly, even with all the food left on the table, they did not offer if we wanted any of it to go. The saddest part of this experience is that I used to like this place. I have a few memories here I will never forget, but these memories have nothing to do with the food or the service. For the sake of my memories I will come try this place one more time

The restaurant is popular and may require a wait. I patronized.Chi's years ago, pre-pandemic. Chi's has some or the best Chinese food in the SFV. The food is always delicious. We had wings, Chow fun noodles with chicken, steamed sole (delicate sauce in the side), white rice, a custom 3-flavor dish with chicken, shrimp and beef in Szechwan sauce. Truly forgettable Americanized Chinese food in Canoga Park is the most succinct way to describe…read morethis place. Oh well, we had to kill an hour or so in the area, so we decided to try it. We had another Chinese food choice and afterwards, we wished we had chosen the other place. This restaurant is a dumpy little joint located in a truly gross strip mall. That being said, there were plenty of people eating there, and people getting take out. So, for the area, I guess this is considered one of the better places if you don't feel like driving far. They had a new item - NY style egg rolls. As a New Yorker ex-pat, I take these very seriously and look for them all the time. Unfortunately, these were chicken. You know things are going wrong at a Chinese restaurant when the egg rolls and pot stickers are chicken instead of pork. Clearly catering to people who are not Chinese food aficionados. The egg rolls were edible but in no way good. The pot stickers were meh and the size of gyoza rather than potstickers. We got the chicken with garlic sauce and the kung pao shrimp and begged them to make them extra, extra, extra spicy. As in all non-Asian areas of town, the waitresses' eyes went wide as if we didn't know what we were asking for, but she said okay. Sure enough, both dishes came and were not only not at all spicy but completely bland. I mean super, duper bland. It has nothing to do with my rating or my meal, but watching a family at the table next to us trying to eat mu shu pork and not knowing how to eat a simple age old dish like that was somewhat frightening or amusing or both. I don't know. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion and I was captivated. Anyway, bottom line is I actually like Americanized Chinese food and even crave it sometimes to mix it up from the standard SGV authentic stuff. This just is not a good place and reminded me of all the horrible Chinese restaurants I tried throughout LA when I first moved here from NYC back in 1994. Can't recommend. Don't go.

I came in for the lunch special, since I'm pescatarian, I asked our waiter if the soup broth for the Miso base had meat to which he replied he wasn't sure. I asked the same for the Tom Yum to which he replied "No it doesn't" so I ordered it. It was fun to go to the self serve stations to pick up my toppings, everything was neat, organized and clean. The entire process was fun and interactive, the place itself has a very cool vibe to it as well. I also ordered a Jasmine Green Tea that was delicious & refreshing. Unfortunately, the fun stopped there. I was glancing the menu as I was almost done eating just for fun when I noticed under the soups section it said "all broths contain pork" but I figured it was fine since I had confirmed with our waiter that the broth I chose had no meat. Just to be certain, I asked him again, I said "the Tom Yum broth doesn't contain pork right?" to which he replied "Yes it does because all our broths do." I'm not sure what the miscommunication was but this experience really left me feeling blind sighted & quite frankly upset... I understand I missed it on the menu but I did verify with our waiter who gave me false information. Overall, extremely disappointing for me, I've been pescatarian for 11 years, this situation should have been avoided.

This spot has built a reputation as a great alternative to some of the larger dim sum chains, so we were excited to finally check it out. We arrived right when they opened, grabbed a cozy table by the kitchen, and immediately noticed how welcoming the staff was. Service was genuinely outstanding! Everyone was friendly, attentive, and the dishes came out at a relaxed pace without ever feeling rushed. Five stars for the hospitality alone. Of course, we ordered a little feast to share: Dan Dan Noodles - My friend's favorite dish of the meal! We ordered them without meat, and they were rich, creamy, and coated in a delicious peanut sauce. I liked them but next time I'd opt to get them with meat to give them a little more flavor. 3.5/5. Pork & Shrimp Soup Dumplings - Exactly what we were craving. Each dumpling was juicy with a generous amount of filling, and once dipped in the vinegar soy sauce with fresh ginger and a little chili oil... absolute perfection. 4.5/5. Pork Chop Fried Rice - My personal favorite. The pork chop was crispy, flavorful, and cooked beautifully, while the classic egg fried rice underneath was pure comfort food. Simple, satisfying, and something I'd happily order again. 5/5. If you're spending the day in the Valley or find yourself around Woodland Hills, Dan Modern Chinese is definitely worth adding to your list. This isn't a cheap hole in the wall spot, so you'll pay a little more but everything was tasty and a great portion size for 2-3 people sharing. Overall, it was a wonderful lunch, and I'd happily come back the next time I'm craving dumplings.

The dumpling wrapper is thin and perfectly folded. The soup inside is delicious and piping hot. I'd say a top competitor to Din Tai Fung. The other dishes were a bit too greasy for my liking. If I had to recommend a dish, the Vegetable Fried Rice was a good choice. It felt light and not as greasy as the other dishes we ordered. The scallion pancake and string beans were both excellent choices. The scallion pancake was light and flaky. The string beans were tender and nicely seasoned. The service was prompt. They were able to accommodate 18 of us and delivered all of the food and drinks without delay. My coworker liked the Jasmine Milk Tea but would not recommend the boba. The matcha latte should also be skipped. I would come back for the Xiao Long Bao and String Beans.
