I should disclose my bias upfront that I try to eat healthy, so I sometimes feel a bit out of my element where the selection is fried, burgers, or at least served with chips as with this establishment. They did have salads on the menu, but I didn't feel confident that they would be fresh or flavorful as there wasn't much in the way of other fresh produce on the menu. The omelette is absolutely massive, for between 4.45-5.50£, of which my partner said the highlight was the chips. I myself had the cream of tomato soup for £3.50, which was served with a roll. Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize there was a danger of the roll coming pre-margarined, or else I would have requested it on the side. As it was, I didn't end up trying the roll. The soup, I am fairly confident, was prepared directly from a Campbell's soup can, albeit masterfully and without lumps the way I never could achieve at home, which perhaps is exactly what other people might have expected to receive when they ordered it. But, alas, I wasn't prepared to pay that kind of price for having perfected the art of re-hydrating condensed soup. Anyway, I would say the portions are reasonably large, and the service not neglectful but neither attentive, and the prices just a bit more than I would prefer to pay at a greasy spoon type eatery. First review but probably a few more to come, made this account specifically for the silver grill. Came on here as I was curious as to why the only review (so far) was so low vs the reasonably consistent 4-ish star rating found on a few other sites. I'll mark where the actual review starts below but first a bunch of opinionated stuff regarding that other review, this isn't an attack on the reviewer or me white knighting the silver grill it's just me pointing things out about it. I'll flat out say that I believe the other review is a bit unfair, I won't make any nonsense arguments about how maybe they ran out of soup and so had to buy some premade ones that day or anything as i've actually seen someone from their staff stocking up on supplies in the nearby sainsbury's. I will however say that admitting to bias does not account or compensate for it, if I walked into a seafood restaurant hating seafood then my bad experience isn't necessarily on the restaurant, it would largely be on me and not the restaurant for just so happening to serve food that I personally didn't like and it would be completely insane to then rate that restaurant lowly (in part, I realise that not all the criticism in the 1st review was to do with the bias but that is the most egregious thing in it as far as i'm concerned). The reviewer didn't ask what went into the salads or how fresh they were, they simply assumed that they weren't fresh or flavourful (further avoiding food that they would more likely have enjoyed). They also didn't think about the "danger" of a pre buttered roll despite knowing that the silver grill isn't exactly the healthiest or highest quality place (or even asking beforehand). Some responsibility is on the customer/reviewer to not go out of their way to not get food they would enjoy. --- Actual review below this bit --- Okay now that all the opinionated rubbish is over time for some opinionated garbage. First going to do reviews of independent elements of various dishes i've ordered over my 100+ visits to the place (please don't judge too harshly, I live very close to it and it's nice to have a big hot filling meal guaranteed) and then aspects of the place itself. -- food -- Chips - for most of the times i've been to the silver grill they did big chunky chips which are quite nice, about the quality of your average chip shop but they are pulp based and so aren't very nice once they cool down. They did thinner chips for a short while which were alright but not quite as good. Chicken nuggets - again pulp (or the nugget equivalent) based so not the greatest texture compared to actual chicken as found below but quite tasty regardless. Butterfly chicken - reasonably strong taste of garlic, good texture and well cooked. Not had one over or under-cooked so far in the couple of dozen that i've had. Cod - about average, nice amount of crispiness on the batter but not that much flavouring. Salad - seems to vary depending on who is in the kitchen so high variance but very fresh barring one particular time where it wasn't (I got it replaced within a couple of minutes so no real hassle). Cheese and ham omelette - more cheesy than I would have liked but that's just down to preference, the ham was still definitely there but overall I think the mushroom omelette is better as the mushroom taste goes better with whatever atypical flavouring ingredients they put in their omelettes. Mushroom omelette - great if you are after a strong taste of mushroom in your omelette as they are very generous with them. Hash browns - as you would expect (little about average maybe, depends from time to time). Crunchiness seems a little inconsistent though. Baked beans - don't they they are heinz as they don't have that overpowering sweetness to them. Just like the hash browns about average. -- other -- VFM - value for money maybe a little below average due to some things being higher price than you would expect (a lot of the smaller things are a little cheaper than expected though). Service/staff - I've only really interacted with two of them, a man and a woman. The man is always friendly and the woman is generally a little cold but in the end they both do their jobs well. Venue itself - clean, easy to move about in, good temperature control, plenty of seating and the background music choices aren't completely terrible (by my metric). Overall my rating would be about a 3.7-3.8 but seeing as I can't do that I'll round it up to 4. read more
