I agree with Mike M. In the garment district, where options are aplenty, Sil is not the only game in town. The clerk, who I think is a family member is unpleasant at best and what they sell is "meh". I went there on a recommendation. I am a friendly and knowledgable sewer. We had many interactions. When this clerk failed to even acknowledge that she knew my face and that I had been in the store many times, that was it. It costs nothing to be pleasant. I will not go back. read more

If you can avoid this place, do it. It's not just overpriced; they cheat on the items and the money, and even on the receipts, and the staff can't count correctly. The customer service is terrible, and the girl working at the first register on the left is especially rude and treats customers like they're begging for something instead of paying for it. Not always what I want but more often than not. I think it's likely the best notions store left in the garment district. I do a lot of hand sewing and they have things nobody else does anymore. I would rather see this small business get my dime than buy a couple of things on AMZN, who might not even have what I actually want. read more

I've spent much of my sewing life in the suburbs, purchasing fabric and supplies at the chain stores like Joann Fabrics, etc. In Manhattan (which does not have any of the big chain fabric stores), I've had a really easy time finding fabrics- there are SO MANY FABRIC STORES, and if you can't find what you want, it probably doesn't exist- but a harder time finding sewing notions. Sil Thread was gracefully recommended to me by an employee in another shop down the street, and man, it is pretty darn great. They've got: -Thread (of course) in silk, polyester, cotton, metallic, elastic, in every color imaginable -Zippers (plastic, metal, invisible) in a huge array of colors and lengths -Pins, needles, fasteners, eyelets, etc. -All kinds of of tools for cutting and measuring -Lingerie hardware (which I've had a really hard time finding in the past) -Supplies for quilting, and even some knitting and needle-felting tools The only slight downside is that this store, like most of the garment district, is definitely geared toward professional seamstresses/tailors/fashion folk. It's very organized, but there is not much signage, labeling, or assistance, so you kind of have to wander around and look at things until you find what you want (which can be fun anyway). read more

Sil is every fashion lover's dream. Whether you're looking to expand your creative side or working to start your clothing line, this is where you want to explore. What I love about Sil is how organized it is, which is not something the garment district is known for. You walk in, and you don't even need to ask the staff any questions because it's so easy to find on their own. Maybe they did that on purpose so we don't bother them too much! They don't seem to be very customer service-oriented haha, but it's not a big deal. It's all about the needles and thread here. They've got the bare necessities, like scissors, buttons, rulers, and zippers, to color cards and garment bags and shoulder pads and bra cups. It's a garment wonderland. I came here on the Saturday before Christmas around 2pm. It was very quiet, I assume because all students and fashion houses are all on Christmas break. There are many trim shops around here, but I was looking for one with extra long YKK zippers for clothing storage containers I'm making. They've got a pretty thorough selection of YKK zippers and Excella zippers. Invisible, plastic, metal, nylon, stretchy, water resistant. Many different lengths. I ended up getting 3 YKK Nylon Zippers 60" long to sew into my homemade cotton canvas storage cubes. I was also looking for a really thin cord elastic. I gave them a sample that was the right size but wrong color. But they didn't have anything thin enough. I'll have to keep looking for that. read more

I love this place. They always have what I need and if I can't find what I'm looking for, they are patient about helping me find it. Example: The first time I came in, I was looking for a very specific type of thread in a very specific color. After wandering the aisles growing more frustrated, I showed one of the men on the floor my swatch and told him what I needed. He pulled a big book down and went through the thread colors in it, holding my swatch against them. He found exactly what I needed. I'm new to sewing and some other shop owners are rather brusque and intimidating. Not at Sil. I love everyone who works here. Also, they were selling the very same seam ripper for $1.25 that Mood sells for $4.00. Their prices are great. read more

I needed a spool of hot pink thread and found this place on yelp. Luckily, it's right by my office! It's easy to navigate or non-experienced sewers. The other thread stores in the area are very overwhelming and seem to be geared towards wholesale. SIL Thread is an NYC Garment District notions store packed to the brim with--you guessed it... -- Thread of many, many varieties. On the main floor they have your usual Gutterman and Mettler Metrosene machine threads, as well as serger and handsewing thread, but that's just the tip of the thread iceberg. There's a huge section in the back and a thread counter where they seem to sell industrial-sized cones of sewing thread. They also have elastic thread, invisible thread, wooly nylon thread, rayon decorative thread, etc. -- Zippers. Aisles and aisles of zippers in every imaginable shade and length, separating, regular, invisible, metal--mainly YKK zippers, I believe. Their website doesn't have much on it (and does not have an online store), but it does have some of the YKK color charts. -- Measuring & Cutting Tools: good variety of rulers, mats, rotary cutters, french curves, etc. -- Notions & Needles: They have a big wall of Clover notions--pins, tailors chalk and marking tools, hand-sewing needles of many kinds (no machine needles, though). They even have some Clover knitting needles and some "Nancy's Notions" branded Clover supplies. -- Elastic, hem tape, velcro: Decent if not mind-boggling selection of elastics by the yard, as well as some colors of foldover (FOE) elastic. Lots of different colors of hem tape on rolls (the thin kind for hemming by hand). -- Miscellaneous: boning, shoulder pads and shoulder pad foam, bra closures... ziploc bags.. hangers... -- Fabric paints: Jacquard brand fabric paints--both standard and the Lumiere/Neopaque opaque kinds. Also they seemed to have leather dyes... I stopped in a few weeks ago on a scouting mission and came back this week to get a few odds and ends--some clear gridded rulers, elastic thread for shirring, a bobbin case, flower-headed pins, tailors chalk. Prices on what I bought seemed generally good. As for prices on other items, it's hard for me to say--SIL Thread is a typical Garment-District style store, in that it has no price tags on most of the items--you have to ask. I did notice that wooly nylon thread was $5 for a 1,000 m cone, which is about average. My elastic thread was $1.50 each for white and black. The sales people were very helpful when I had questions. My only small quibbles were that items had no visible prices and they don't carry sewing machine needles. But that's typical in the Garment District--stores are often very specialized, and they're all in such close walking distance of each other it's just a matter of trying a lot of stores and remembering what each carries. Bottom line, this is a good place to come for thread or zippers and miscellaneous notions. Daytona Trimmings is still my favorite NYC notions store, though--they have a lot more varieties of elastic, carry sewing machine needles and their thread selection is good enough for me (but they don't have all those measuring and cutting and pinning tools like SIL does). read more

Based on it's name, you'd think they only sell thread. Think again! This place carries zippers of all types, sizes, and colors for outerwear to dresses. HUGE selection of threads in every color and type you can imagine! Up front is stocked with rulers, french curves, and other tools you'd need for pattern design. A selection of Clover and Nancy's sewing notions is carried here as well as Japanese bias tape in a rainbow of colors and sizes. You can also order dress forms and a couple of sewing machines and sergers from the displays when you first enter the store. Sewing needles for both and and machine are sold at the counter along with small sewing notions. The zippers are in the middle of the store and the threads are all towards the back. You can also get pattern making paper here in a pre-cut roll or by the yard. Muslin is sold in pre-cut packets here too for the students that come in. Yes, this store also doubles as Parsons School of Design's supply store as a LONG line of students will be here during the beginning of the semesters for their pattern making supplies. I agree with the other comments about their selection. However, I know of other stores with great selections, that are also helpful, knowledgable and have decent return policies! I bought several items from here for a production and asked assistance on 2 of them. They were WRONG about both, and even though I called and told them what happened, (that they sold me the wrong tool for the snaps I purchased, even after I asked if it was the right one) they still would only take the snaps back and not the $19 tool, which I would never have purchased if they hadn't told me it was the correct tool for the snaps. I will only ever go there again if they are the only store in the city where I know I can find a certain specific item. Otherwise, I'm headed to P&S for far better prices, better service and an actual return policy! read more

Rude registrar. Don't really have many stuffs but are so rude. I asked to see what kinds of boning they had, the registrar said I won't show you unless you waited in line, however, I was sure to buy them (I've already bought one from another store) just want to have a look. Price tags resolved: during my visit everyhting was labelled with a price. This is the go to place for threads of almost every conceivable color! Go to the back of the floor where there is just a trillion types of threads (cotton, polyester, for jeans) and the colors are just great. Price is fantastic. Not the strongest of thread type: but works great for most clothes fabrics. Also great for zippers in every color and size. I also found light engineer tracing paper, but wished they also stocked one with a wider width than the 18" one. Still very happy with the price! Few places, if any, offer this product. Definately going back for more. I decided there is no one go-to shop: just need to know the go to shop for the item you need. This is my go to store for zippers, threads and tracing paper. They have other sewing tools there too that are very competitvely priced. Ha, they also stock bamboo knitting needles! love them too. Update: another trimming store (Pacific trimming), someone warned peope not to use your credit card since they were followed with a $4000 fraudulent charge. I just eperienced this myself after using my card at this store. there were numerous charges and even to the point my card company was getting calls about my card limit? thankfully, the card company is now investigating the matter. Co-incident that this has happened? this was the only new store i had recently used my card, there are trusted shops and I have decided this is not one of them. Dont stop yourself from going to this store, but be aware they you might find them using your card! read more

I think I have a love hate relationship with Sil. On the one hand, the items are merchandised so nicely in neat little rows, on the other nothing is priced and the sales staff is a little more than reluctant to help out. It's not a big store, but once I was sent literally to each corner of the store while looking for a sewing machine. Every sales person hesitantly directed me to another area, leaving me so flabbergasted that I just finally left without even seeing so much as a machine. Unfortunate customer service aside, it is really good for all the accoutrement required to complete a good sewing job. They have pretty much everything and despite the lack of price tags, the pricing really is A-ok. read more

I have lots of love for SIL thread. Let me count the ways..... 1. Custom length YKK zippers in oodles of colors 2. Around 100 colors of good quality thread in multiple weights for $1.50-2.25/a spool. 3. Industrial sewing machine feet from $2.50. TWO-FIFTY. There really is no reason to buy from anyone else unless you're looking for some of the specialized stuff Steinlauf & Stoller carries. Nice staff too. I like this place a lot because most of the items are affordable. I had to pretty much build my sewing kit from the ground up and this was the place to go. I got most of what I needed for under $20 including 3 spools of thread. This included the little pin cushion tomato, solid line tracer, a thing of assorted needles, and one of those quick thread clippers. They have a really large assortment of threads, all for a low cost. The only two things I hate about Sil Thread is the fact that NOTHING has a price tag on it, which is irritating... and most of the staff there are mexicans who can't speak english and won't bother helping you. I love this shop and come here often since I am able to find most things I need for work. They have a great selection of threads and zippers, plus lots of little Japanese craft items. I have been to SIL Thread many times & did not understand some of the negative reviews -- UNTIL my last visit there recently. Basically, the cashier -- a middle age Korean man who seems to be either owner or manager -- blatantly prioritized Korean customers over others of other ethnicity/skin color. I have never encountered anything like this, and the owner of SIL Thread should be on notice that if I ever see it again, I WILL file a complaint with the NYC human rights commission against them. I was there on a week day when there were several customers in the store. I got in line, as did others. When it was my turn, the cashier ( middle age man ) told me to get another package of my item from the area. I did that and returned immediately. The transaction was only the exchange of one identical item for another (it just needed to be traded, it was already paid). It took like 10 seconds for me to grab the package that he told me to get, and then instead of just handing the bag back to me, he just ignores me. Pointedly. I waited in front of the register patiently while he held a young Korean woman with a complicated order. Then, when she was finally done, he simply ignored me even though he started to help a Korean woman that was behind the first woman, i.e., two places in line behind me. Of course I said, hey you asked me to get a new one, and I did, I was here before her. Meanwhile, the Korean woman was on her phone and clearly not ready to order whatever it was she was going to order. He tells me, I have to get HER "PERMISSION" to go first. I'm like, I was in line before her, and I did what you asked. He says, I have to get the other customer's permission. I ask if he wants me to get in line again (Korean woman was the ONLY person in line by then), and he indicates no and that he will do me a favor but that I should get the Korean customer's "permission". I'm like, this is crazy, and by now another (non-Korean) customer is there and is complaining about wasting time. He keeps going on and on about "permission" from the Korean customer but he will do me a "favor." He asks the Korean woman, who looks up from her phone, totally confused. Eventually, he completed my sale (which had been started before). What an a**h*l*. I know that SIL is a Korean owned business, and certainly this behavior is not common to other Korean businesses, but this was truly outrageous. I would be looking for another source to send students if they were mine. I've never experienced anything like this with any other cashier at SIL. I suspect that the rudeness that others have reported my be due to this guy and his blatant prejudice. Consider going somewhere else. I'll be getting my zippers at Botani and other places from now on whoever I can. read more

Sil Thread is the best option for YKK Zippers. They have every color offered by YKK. I go there almost everyday to get invisible and regular YKK zippers. There's always someone to help if you need assistance. They are super busy but they will help, so don't be shy. They also can order special zippers for you in a matter of 2 weeks if it's not something they have in stock. Sil is great because the store is so organized compared to many other ''whole in the wall'' type places. They have almost any sewing related supplies you can imagine. AND the prices at SIL are better compared to other places like Steinlauf..... Panda.... Also, they seem to be the only notions store to sell Blank Care Label Sheets!!
