Lou and Larry were very well prepared for the trip, having caught a good deal of mackerel bait ahead of time and let us catch some too. Once we were out on the water, Lou and Larry worked hard to help us land a catch. They were well prepared with chum to help attract the striper to the boat and explained all the proper techniques. We ended up catching 4 striper over 30 inches and it was great fun. In addition, Lou and Larry were great to talk to and made sure to point out local landmarks and even took us in close to see the fisherman's monument before heading into the dock. You wont regret working with Lou and Larry.

I felt very safe on the boat with Captain Lou at the helm; being Gloucester natives they really knew the spots to hit to bring us home some big fish! Larry also skinned and cleaned the fish for us right on the boat, which was nice because that is certainly not something I could have done. They were both highly professional, yet relaxed and fun. I would highly recommend this charter.

Captain Johnny and his crew (Ira and Stan) were fun and patient with a boatload of novices (and some of us nauseous) passengers. They set us up, cheered us on and we caught 25 fish that we could take home (not counting the fish that had to be released, if we factored that in it would probably be at least 40 to 45 fish caught). They know what they're doing and taught us a great deal, all the while making sure everyone was having fun and was safe. We got to see a shark, we heard a lot of great stories and each one of us are determined to go again. The boat was clean and comfortable with a working bathroom and even room to take a quick nap if you want. If you are a hardcore fishermen they will give you a great trip as well, since they have decades of experience and know the waters like the back of their hand. They are passionate about what they do and take pride in making sure you have the fishing experience you want. To make a great day even better, when we got back Captain Johnny had arranged for a local chef to cook some of our catch and he even threw in fresh lobsters. The hardest part of the day was figuring out what to do with all the fish we caught. Give them a call, let them know what kind of trip you want and I guarantee they can arrange it.

He fit us in on an early morning excursion and we couldn't have asked for a better time. The weather was perfect and Capt Ted was like your favorite Uncle, great with the kids, full of funny jokes and interesting facts as we boated around the Essex River and Cape Ann. The boat is no frills but has a private bathroom down below with some seating and one comfy rotating chair up top. Be prepared to stand or sit on your cooler that you should bring. The cooler with food & drinks is the only thing you need to bring. He supplies the fishing stuff (poles, bait, etc) I would suggest you bring your own life vests if you have them. Kids must wear them at all times. At our first stop, my son caught a gigantic fish! Sadly that was the only one of the day. Capt Ted was kind enough to filet it for us. We took it home and grilled it and it was delicious! We also checked 2 lobster traps but no lobsters, in there (boo!) but we saw some cool looking crabs and horseshoe crabs. Parking isn't great as you have to drop your stuff off at the boat ramp behind some apartments and then park down the street.

I am 6 months pregnant and wanted to surprise my partner with a fishing trip for his 40th birthday. He's always wanted to learn but anytime he'd been on the big water adventure trips it's been all thrill and no lessons. I reached out to Agawam based on a recommendation from another captain. Ted, the captain and owner, contacted me immediately and assured me that we would have a fun, educational, relaxing and beautiful day on the river. He did not disappoint! Ted is incredibly knowledgeable of the area and its deep history. He played wonderful music and taught us how to fish! By then end I might have even been more hooked than my hubs. And yes, we caught a big one! What was most surprising was the stunning terrain. I never expected a river to look like that. Gorgeous marshes, birds and fish everywhere, sandbars and beaches....I cannot wait to go back and bring my 9 year old.

Also, check for any available deals before booking. We paid full price and later found out there were Groupon offers available for almost half the price. It may be worth checking whether any discounts are available for your travel dates. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and seeing so many whales upclose made the trip worthwhile.

The boat itself as two bathrooms and a lower and upper deck. They usually go out to Stellwagen bank / Jeffrey's ledge depending on where they believe the whales may be (10 to 30 miles out). The cape Ann whale watch and Boston harbor also goes to the same locations and I believe they communicate. We were pretty close to cape Ann whale watch and they seemed to be a lot more crowded than our boat. For practically the entire trip, the marine biologist was telling us facts and guiding us in how to look at the wildlife. He even came out at the end to chat with us one on one. He was quite knowledgeable and even knew the whales by name! Apparently, it's common to see dolphins, finback, minke, and humpback whales during this season (June to October). Humpbacks deliver the exciting plunge into the water with the lifted tail. We were even able to see a cool feeding lunge from a whale named patches. We saw a lot of birds as well! We luckily were able to go to Jeffries ledge this time which is only about 10 miles out. On other trips this summer they have been going to Stellwagen bank which is 30 miles out. I highly recommend 7 seas if you want to have an enjoyable trip onto the ocean and relaxing encounter with amazing marine mammals!! I believe they will refund you if you don't see any whales, but it's quite likely to see whales as they are extremely knowledgeable on finding the whales.
