Had a very enjoyable fishing charter with Captain Paul on the Obsessed boat. The boat is 20'ft long…read morejust the right size for the two of us & the captain. My brother-in-law was allowed to bring his own fly rod and gear. Captain Paul grew up helping his father with charters & now the two run the business together. Captain Paul, knew the area like the back of his hand which made me feel at ease with the thick fog we started the charter with. First half hour spent catching mackerel for bait. We only had to make one close stop, right on top of a school of mackerel. Every time we put our line down in the water came up with 1,2, or 3 mackerel. Captain Paul made it easy, taking the mackerel off our hooks & putting them in the bait box. No slimy, fishy hands. Next up was fishing for striper bass. Had a lot of action. I lost count how many fish we were able to land. Brother-in-law was even getting rapid strikes on his fly. Sometimes had both of us reeling in stripers at the same time. Once that area became quite back towards the wharf. Saw two basking sun fish, Mola Mola, what weird looking creatures. Captain Paul's knowledge was very informative. He would advise my brother-in-law when asked & even let him use some of his flies. Captain Paul's full time job during the off season, school teacher. Very apparent with his patience & willing to share his knowledge. Next we stopped over a huge school of pogies. Captain Paul said many times the large striper bass are below the school and on the outside rim of them. I had several bites but just not able to hook and land them. Then the four hours was up. Unfortunately, we did not catch any striper bass large enough to keep. To me it didn't matter, throughly enjoyed myself. I would highly recommend Obsessed Fishing Charter. Side note, two charter boats recently collided in the area we were in. The news didn't report that the large boat that rescued those from the small capsized boat, that the other large boat was one of their own in the collision. I won't give my negative opinion about theses large party boats. But I felt completely safe with Captain Paul on a smaller boat.

We arrived at 4:45am, for a 5:00am launch. Quentin was right on time and we were able to experience a beautiful sunrise on our way out of the harbor! During the trip, he was super helpful, provided guidance on techniques, and he had a great attitude right from the start. He was personable, down to earth, just an all around nice guy. He was a professional rugby player, and had lots of good stories to tell along the way. Quentin answered all our questions about we had about fishing and around Boston and the types of fish we'd be catching. Since we were staying at a hotel, I let him know we didn't have plans to take any fish home with us, so Quentin suggested we just go for the bigger ones, that weren't slot size, since we weren't keeping them anyway. Quentin knew the good spots for finding bait fish and stripers! He put us over a school of mackerel for our bait fish and we had a blast catching 1-5 every time the line went in the water. Quickly, we had close to 100 mackerel and then we were ready for the Striped Bass (Stripers). My son and I caught about a dozen quality fish, and we had doubles 2-3 times (i.e. two fish on the lines at the same time). Quentin's boat is fully equipped with everything we needed for fishing and an enjoyable trip. It's clean everything was in working order. The boat is a 95' Lydia style fishing boat and the crew is small but active and eager to help. There seems to be less drinking on Walsh's trips then on the other fleets I have sailed with. This translates into a cooperative, kid-friendly crowd making it hard, sometimes, to tell who is crew and who is friendly fisherman. Their website is nice it has some good information about their company, but if you are interested in fishing YOU MUST CALL THEM for details about scheduling and pricing. Walsh fishes deeper then many of the other boats and carefully chooses his spots based on whats biting. Deep water often means larger fish but the reel-in can be long and painful so rest your arm before you go and have fun.

Captain Dan took us out for a half day fishing trip. He did an awesome job. And I don't say that…read morejust because we caught fish but because he made the whole experience special, like we were family! First, the three of us in the trip were seniors and one had mobility difficulties that made getting in and out of the boat dufficult.. Capt. Dan found solutions and make accommodations that made it easy as possible. Thank you! Once in the boat, Capt.Dan quickly adapted to what we wanted to do. He clearly loves fishing and being on the water. He knows the area around Gloucester, near shore and out a ways so he could quickly adapt to sea conditions and ensure our best chances for catching fish. He let us set our level of involvement, whether just sitting back as he trolled, with rods in the holders, or holding the rod and actively fishing. He used both live bait (mackerel that we actually fished for) and trolling lures. On this trip we caught a couple of the biggest fish I've ever caught! A 32 inch bluefish that really put the word sport into sport fishing! And a 42 inch striper that easily weighed 30 pounds. Both were caught near shore in protected areas with minimal chop (one of our party surprisingly got seasick..a first for her and to which he adapted immediately). We even cast a couple of lines as we tied up at the dock and he cleaned our fish. We almost caught another striper! Like I said Captain Dan went above and beyond for our party, ensuring we had a great day on the water. He made us feel like family! I highly recommend this charter!

My experience with Gloucester Fleet wasn't very good. My son loves fishing and as a treat for being…read moretop of his high school graduating class, I figured his first ocean fishing trip would be a great reward. On July 8th, I booked a 3/4 day trip for July 20th and also an overnight stay at the Cape Ann Resort hotel. About 11:30 AM on July 19th as I and my son were starting out to the location from New York State, we received a call from Gloucester Fleet confirming the trip. Great! We took pics of the boat that evening. Next morning we head over to the boarding area. My son slept only two hours because he was so excited for the trip. There were no people around which was odd since we were only 20 minutes before the departure time of 7AM. Eventually, we called the Fleet number and spoke to the captain/owner who recalled his wife speaking to me the day before to confirm the trip. But, he had canceled the trip later on because too few customers to justify the fuel expense and called everybody - everybody except us (absolutely no call on my mobile account). So, WE lost money - my two vacation days from work, hotel expense, restaurant dinner, fuel for the trip, all totaled well over $1,000 and also about 8 hours of driving and the huge disappointment. Instead of being very apologetic and perhaps offering a free future trip and covering hotel expense, he said we could drive about 45 minutes (52 minutes per Google) to New Hampshire and if lucky get an 8AM boat that catches mackerel -- or, get this, go whale watching! He said all the other people were understanding -- but they were called the day before. If we'd received the cancelation call there would have been time to rearrange things. Curiously, there was a nearby fishing boat trip from a competitor that was sold out -- no lack of customers. I wonder why...
