I decided to support a local business and ordered a custom cake for my father-in-law's birthday…read more After searching for bakeries in Astoria, I chose The Naked Lemon based on reviews and their reputation for carrot cake, which is his favorite. Ordering online was simple, and I scheduled a Friday pickup for a Sunday celebration. However, when my husband arrived (slightly late due to other errands), we discovered the cake had already been placed in the display case to be sold by the slice--even though it had been prepaid ($70). We never received a call to confirm pickup. He watched as the cake was removed from the display and placed into a box that was clearly too small. Instead of correcting this, the employee covered it with saran wrap and sent it with him that way. The cake itself looked very poorly finished, with large areas missing frosting. When my husband asked about it, the response he received was dismissive and unhelpful. After he left, I called the bakery myself and was met with even worse customer service. I was told I should have "done more research" and that this is simply how their cakes look. When I expressed concern about freshness (since the cake was for Sunday and not properly boxed), I was told I should have ordered it closer to the date. I explained our schedule, but the response was essentially, "I don't know what to tell you," and I was refused any refund or solution. The interaction felt rude and dismissive, with no concern for customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, the cake itself was just as disappointing. When we cut into it, it crumbled apart. It lacked flavor, had chunks that seemed like uncooked flour, and the little frosting it did have was bland and uneven. Overall, it seemed rushed and poorly made. As a small business owner myself, I understand things don't always go perfectly--but the lack of care in both product quality and customer service was extremely disappointing. I truly wish I had a better experience and let me remind you the cake was $70 dollars.

Within seconds we were treated with outright disrespect by an elderly woman near the salt-water taffy. She immediately started shaking her head at us and then made multiple inappropriate and disgusting comments -- within less than a minute: - "Is this an insane asylum or a sane asylum?" - Telling my 12 year old daughter and niece to "close their legs and keep them shut." Speaking to CHILDREN like that is beyond inappropriate--it's disturbing. As we were walking out she went behind the counter and started opening & shutting cabinets as loudly as she could. We didn't even stay a full minute before leaving because of how uncomfortable and disrespected we were. No family should ever be made to feel like that walking into a business. If this is how customers, especially kids are treated, then Scoopers doesn't deserve anyone's business. We will never be back.

They even carry Faygo, which is a rare find here on the West Coast. It definitely has a nostalgic ambiance while being just modern enough. Its also at the end of the strip (or start depending where you park) which makes it convenient. While the ice cream selection is huge, the ordering process is a bit of a puzzle. You're required to pay at the register before you even pick your flavors, which is at the end of the long counter. You pass all the ice cream to get there which leads to a lot of confusion and some "line tension" among customers. It's also worth noting that they don't offer samples-which is a bit of a bummer considering how many delicious options there are! If you can navigate the at times chaotic line, the treats are worth it.

Not even kidding, we buy anywhere between 6-12. They take us about a week to eat but oh man, we look forward to our evening sweetbuns during that time. They keep very well in the fridge; just pop one... or two in the micro for a minute-ish. They're the perfect amount of sweet. Ya know how everyones favorite part of a sweetbun is the middle? I mean, it's for good reason, its delicious. I actually cannot pick what part of her sweetbuns are my fave. The entire thing is special in its own way. The fluffy outside with a kiss of all the gooey cinnamon mixture covered in the cream cheese icing. Then moving around to the middle where both sides are covered and its a little softer. The texture when you finally make it to the middle, just go ahead and plop it all in your mouth. Goodness, whens the next sweetbun day?
