I just moved into the neighborhood, and I unfortunately have an addiction to pizza. So I did what I had to do - give the Saloon a shot (as it's a stones throw away). Turns out this is 100% my new place. The za? Is the cats pajamas. The staff being friendly and polite? That's the bee's knees. The prices? Absolutely fair and honestly this place will easily drain me $500 a month, and that's because it's absolutely amazing pizza. 10/10. I would have attached pics but I ate that pie in 15 mins and honestly might go back for more tonight. This is absolutely the pizza spot you want to eat at. read more

I have finally found my favorite tavern style pizza. Please understand- I eat pizza at least once a week. Do NOT sleep on the side street saloon!!!! Staff is lovely and I love a neighborhood spot. read more

Sadly the service here was absolutely abysmal. We waited 40 minutes by the bar to put in our order of just two drinks. The owner was just standing there as the bartender was trying her best to run food to tables in the back, take orders, and check out each person at a needlessly complicated POS system. We talked with a guy next to us and said he's been waiting to put in a pizza order for 40 minutes, all of us just standing at the bar. I learned that this bar recently went from cash only to accepting card because of a wild ATM theft, but some major improvements need to be done for them to become more efficient because the lone bartender was drowning in a sort of busy environment, with no help. read more

My bf and I got the pepperoni pizza, with their housemade guac and chips with fish and chips as well. The food was truly awesome, I would definitely come back again. Our server was great! Ambiance is pretty chill inside for casual hangouts with friends. read more

Down the street from an Airbnb so we tried. Classic bar atmosphere with friendly and helpful service. CASH ONLY! Fried pickles were good but a bit more tangy than I like. Breakfast burger was good too. Fish and chips were poor. Greasy and with a freezer burn taste. Good fries. Would like to ask the fire marshal why their seat count is double the allowed occupancy limit. :-) read more

Good neighborhood 'dive' bar. The thin crust sausage pizza was a nice departure from the Chicago deep dish. Still weird to me the cut into bite size squares (isn't pizza supposed to be triangles cuts of a circle in a square ) Friendly staff Cash only read more

Cash only, ATM at front of bar. Pool table, touch tunes, plenty of torn up booths to give that old neighborhood feel. Haven't ate any of the food, but a good place to be late at night. Quiet neighborhood read more

This is your classic Chicago neighborhood bar but what I would say that sets it apart is their tavern style pizza. It's fantastic - a thin flaky crust that is perfect. On this occasion I went with their pineapple, pepperoni and jalapeño special. My new favorite by far. I've also tried their cheese curds and fried pickles which were excellent as starters. Lots of domestic, craft and import beers to choose from. The bartender was super friendly and answered all our questions. Do visit this place even though it's a little off the beaten path! read more

Side Street Saloon - Cheese Pizza (10") - Dive Bars Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Great local dive bar with everything you need including board games, touch tunes, pool, and good grub. And for a dive bar, it's clean with a nice bright interior. It was also packed on this Saturday after the cubs game with the locals that are on a first name basis with the bartender. We eventually ordered some food after rounds of different draft beers. The Buffalo chicken salad and chicken quesadilla were both delicious and great portions. Great quality and taste! read more

Fun local bar that may not be the most convenient to get to but is worth a little walk for some good drinks and food. It's in an area with not a whole lot going on, so it's visited pretty much mostly by the people who live around here. Side Street Saloon is welcoming to anyone though. Maybe it's a little more expensive than it should be. This isn't a total dive because of the prices, and the food isn't bad, with them being known for pizza. After hanging at a few other bars around here, we came. It wasn't that crowded inside. The bar is bigger than it looks. Clean looking for a dive. We got a few drinks, and has some food too. It's about $7 for an average cocktail. These are the cheaper ones. Kind of high for a dive. The food is the other thing it's known for, including pizza. As for us, this time we had the Salsa And Chips. It's about $8 for a lot. Good for being kind of basic. There's other food such as cheese curds and junk. Bars like this are a good way to meet people in the neighborhood, as it's convenient for locals to get to being out of the way from things a bit. It's located east of Ashland at George and Greenview. This is also cash only. read more

Came in on a Friday at 10pm. After finding a spot at the bar, I stood there for a full 10 minutes without a single acknowledgment. No "be right with you," no eye contact, nothing. The bartender with the purple hair walked past me multiple times without a glance. I had to essentially force eye contact with the second bartender just to get a drink. read more

This place is a neighborhood classic that never disappoints! Great bar food, great service and the vibe is kind of its own thing... Cool Grandma? Go here, eat & drink. You'll be glad you did! read more

My boyfriend heard that this was one of the best places to get tavern style pizza. We got a side by side pizza with half sausage and peppers and it was delicious! The pizza came out at a reasonable time and our waiter/ the bartender had a great personality and was funny. The vibe is very low key and like a local dive bar, it is also cash only. They have bar seating, booth seating and tables in the back and a pool table. I would definitely recommend them for tavern style pizza! read more

Ok I love a good like a good local dive bar. They had an amazing bar. Didn't have food but the pizza and everything I saw looked legit. For a dive bar the drink prices were just not ok. 6.50 Jim beam at a dive bar? 8 dollar beers? Bartender was good but was focus on the regular guest. I get that. Touch tunes is jam packed. Ike you will never play a song unless you use 6 credits to skip. It's a scam and screw that. 2 other guest didn't play 50 songs. I hate scammers and this place is that on the music. Wanna play only your tunes. Ditch the touch tunes and try not to screw your patrons read more

As a Lakeview resident for many years I came across Side Street Saloon as it recently appeared on a 'best non deep dish pizza in Chicago' list. Having never heard of it and being a pizza lover, especially tavern style, I just had to check it out! The bar itself has more of a neighborhood dive bar feel - after all, it is a corner bar on a side street. Only thing missing is a Schlitz sigh out front. The place boasts a few booths, tables, and a pool table in the back. The bartender was attentive and friendly, and the clientele definitely seemed to be neighboring locals. They have an impressive craft beer list, and the usual domestic staples as well. Food was good, recommend the cheese curds. Pizza was a good pie, too, but is it a destination type place or worthy of a 'top pizza' list? I am not so sure....but if you're in the area definitely check it out for yourself. read more

If you're looking for a casual neighborhood dive bar to watch a game and hang out with a few friends, this is the perfect spot! The pizza is classic Chicago style thin crust, and they have a good variety of drink options. Note that it's cash only and there's usually only one bartender working, but the relaxed vibe and convenient location makes this a great bar! read more

Low key this might be the best thin crust pizza in the city. It's certainly the best thin crust you'll find at a bar! SSS is a neighborhood bar on a quiet corner in Lakeview behind St. Alphonsus church that looks unassuming from the outside, but the tiny kitchen puts out some really good food. Bartenders were friendly, nice selection of beers, and they had NA beers for my pregnant wife. I'll definitely be returning to get the pizza again and wash it down with some Oberon on tap. Cash only in our 2022 cashless world sucks, but that would be my only complaint. read more

This is an unpretentious, typical Chicago corner bar. The tavern style pizza (thin crust, square cut) is my favorite in Chicago. Not too thin (Bungalow by Middlebrow is way to thin IMO), but thinner than a lot of other places I've tried. This place is just perfect. read more

I came here on a Sun afternoon to watch the NBA playoffs and eat some pizza. It was empty, except for a sole person quietly sipping a beer and watching golf. It was the epitome of a dive bar. Dingy vibes. Cash only. Very friendly servers. We ordered the side pie, which featured Chicago's infamous giardiniera. It was interesting and provided a tanginess to the pizza. The basil was fresh and pungent and the sauce was flavored well. The crust was interesting, as it was the classic Chicago tavern style, crisp and buttery like a cracker. We also ordered cheese curds, which were delicious. Light, airy fried bits of mozzarella served with ranch. Overall, this place was cool. The food was great and fairly priced. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating to everyone. I just wished it was a little more filled with people, esp after being so isolated during the pandemic. My bf and I agreed we would only go back if we were in the area and wanted to watch a game. But if you live around the block, def make this a staple. read more

Classic Chicago corner bar. Not a dive but that atmosphere. Great staff, GREAT pizza!

Came here Saturday for a $5.50 burger/fry meal with a couple beers. The burger was decent, I thought it was over cooked a little, but it's quite alright with how much I was paying. The beer we got was pretty good, one was from Anchor Brewing & the other was Ommegang, both solid beers. My buddy and I actually got free glassware from Anchor Brewing, pretty awesome glass! Love exploring places like these, it was a chill bar. It was definitely nice and cozy inside, don't be afraid to check this place out - finally glad I did. read more

A great neighborhood dive bar. The beer selection is great. They have Three Floyd's Zombie Dust fairly often, which can be hard to come by, along with typically having some Three Floyd's beer on draft (Alpha King or Gumball Head).
