This place is kind of a little hole in the wall but it's very pleasant, well lit, with lots of windows. Service was great, everybody was friendly and smiling. We had two kids with us and the server was very good with them! Food was great with one very slight exception. Kids had pancakes with bacon which they make into a cute face for the kids. My wife had a classic cheeseburger which she really enjoyed. I had a "new age patty melt" which I really liked! I like poutine, my wife not so much, so we had the gravy on the side. Fries where good with or without the gravy. I had more than a few bites of the kids pancakes and they where fantastic! Just the right sweetness to the batter, slightly crunchy outside, soft and spongy in the middle, basically the perfect pancake. Only negative I can say about the food is that every sandwich comes with your choice of either cole slaw or Greek pasta salad. These are apparently prepared either earlier in the day or earlier in the week. They are served in pre-portioned plastic sauce containers with lids. I had the Greek pasta salad and it was not very cold and tasted like it may have been starting to spoil. This is the only reason for only 4 stars. I could do without it anyway so this didn't bother me and I didn't even mention it to the server. Definitely recommend! read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE. Best people, great food! Ask for Stacey, shes a hoot! Oh and if youre into things a little different, order this: Deli potatoes (Bacon, onion, cheddar, tossed w/ homefries & topped w/ sour cream) top of the rye and get a cup of the veggie chili to pour over top. A very nice and cozy breakfast spot very busy especially on Sunday morning

Normally I would give this 4/5 because the food is great but a bit too pricey. However, today I will give it a 3. Today I showed up very hangry, which could have skewed my results, but just hear me out. They have the best fries, thick but not too thick and crispy which is basically the best way to make fries. I ordered takeout in person and ordered very clearly stating I wanted a side of fries. (Granted, I have been thinking about these fries for at least an hour now.) Well guess what, I didn't get my fries! My order came out and normally I would have checked but she tied the bag and my sandwich was in a big box that looked big enough for fries, so I didn't. When I got home and opened my box I wanted to throw it at the wall and cry at the same time, as my fries were nowhere in sight. Also, my grilled ham and cheese was on a Philly cheesesteak bun not the normal grilled toast that complements the grilled ham and cheese, which made me upset too. I am still really upset about my fries, I'm not even mad about the loss of money but mostly about the fries. These fries are special and I had been waiting forever for them only to be let down majorly. So my only hope for everyone seeing this is to always double check and make sure you have your fries so you don't have to go through a loss like this one. Great food and even better service! Patty melt and biscuits and gravy were a couple of my favorites. Has the feel of a small town diner that's comfortable and inviting. I have eaten here on more than one occasion. I feel like the prices keep going up and up and the portions are getting smaller. They use small plates so it appears they are giving you more food than they are. I ordered a shrimp wrap and there were only 4 medium sized shrimp wrapped in it also on another occasion I ordered the pot roast and it was tough. It's not that great for the price. read more

It was Sunday on Memorial Day weekend, so very few places were open. Yet, life had to go on, and carryout lunch needed to be procured. Side Street Diner was open, so I decided to give it a try. I was a little wary at first, given the size of this place's menu and the conventional restaurant wisdom regarding large menus. As my grandma would say, this is the kind of menu that you'd need a PhD to decipher. Somewhat befuddled, I asked the waitress what she recommended, and she steered me towards the corned beef reuben. I was not disappointed. The corned beef is made in-house, and I think that the reuben I ate is on par with the delis on the west side of town, if not even better. The french fries were a bit of a let-down, though. It wasn't that they were bad; they just were not on the same level as that reuben. There was also a little cup of cole slaw that was included with the meal; it was also nothing special. Despite the cole slaw and the fries, I would definitely head back to try some other variety of a corned beef sandwich. read more

Worst breakfast ever. Not sure if these reviews were written by humans. Dry flavorless Omlette, watered down gas station coffee, no room at food bar because it loaded with stuff. When asked "how is your breakfast I replied "ok and asked...does feta melt because this Omlette is dry as a bone...I got the answer NO. I ate 1/3 of the Omlette and 2 potato wedges. Don't ask how is your breakfast if you can't present a solution or pretend to care. read more

Sidestreet Diner has a devoted local following due to the location in the Village, menu variety for breakfast lunch and dinner, and delightful baked goods. Expect to wait more than a few minutes during peak mealtimes...standing since the diner is space optimized for eating, not waiting. It is a tight fit so wheelchairs and walkers are not able to be easily accommodated inside. During summer months there is outdoor seating that can accommodate these. There is a small coat closet...self-serve but it does come in handy in the winter. If you are dining solo, i recommend sitting at the counter where you will be impressed by the food prep in the tiny kitchen. Our waitress Stacey, was swamped during peak lunch rush but still offered us a top rate dining experience. We all enjoyed our hearty sandwiches. Patty melt, turkey reuben, traditional Reuben and a portobello mushroom wrap were served in baskets with cute paper liners with a small side of slaw or pasta salad and a pickle spear. Clam chowder hit the spot on a subzero Friday afternoon in Pure Michigan. You don't leave hungry. Mom wants to go back to try other menu items. So do I! read more

We're not from Grosse Pointe but wanted to grab a bite to eat - this place really surpassed our expectations! Wonderful staff, a really wide selection of dishes for reasonable prices, and it's nice that they also serve wine and beer. We had the Diner Spinach Salad, a Michigan salad, chicken noodle soup and cream of mushroom soup. The latter was a bit too salty but still had a great flavors going on - and all the other dishes were fantastic. We got some bakery treats on our way out and those were wonderful as well. Can't wait to get back there... We wish this place was closer to where we live! read more

I strongly recommend avoiding this place. Last time I went in, I was completely ignored by the waitstaff. I sat down and waited to be served while 5 - 6 employees stood talking behind the counter. It was not busy at all and they clearly saw me. After waiting for about 15 minutes, I saw a woman walk in. She was immediately helped, and the staff continued to ignore me. The food is pretty good but I think it's way overpriced. They also offered my friend an extra side of salad dressing to try out, because he couldn't decide which he would prefer. I t was offered as if it were a courtesy. Well, the courtesy cost him an extra $1. When he mentioned it at the register he was told rudely, "well that's what we do". This is a great place for breakfast or lunch. You can't go wrong with the eggs or the salads. I like the Maurice and the Kale salad. The soup is also homemade and fabulous. On June 25, 2015 we experienced the rudest waitress we have ever come across. She actually asked us if we really needed the extra napkins we asked for! REALLY? $8.99 for a chicken quassedia (sp. ?) with hardly any chicken in it and we can't have the extra napkins we asked for. And this all took place before the heavy set waitress had a fight with a co-worker and then left the restaurant. Not exactly the birthday lunch we were hoping for.
