This Shuyi Tealicious location just opened up in early March 2023. It is the second Shuyi location in Ottawa (the first one is on Dalhousie in the Byward Market). This one is large with lots of seating. It is bright and clean. It's in the Bleeker Mall (which is a strip mall).
I didn't even know this location existed until I saw it on UberEats, as I was scrolling through randomly looking for new eateries and deals, lol. And UberEats was having a spend $15 and get a free Signature Milk Tea Special (the Signature Milk Tea sells for $7.95 on UberEats). This location is much more convenient for me, plus it has free parking in the shared strip mall parking lot, so obviously I had to take advantage of this deal, lol.
I ordered the Strawberry POPO Yogurt ($8.45) which has Jasmine yogurt, Jasmine tea, Fig jelly, POPO (which I believe is what they call agar pearls/crystal boba) and fresh strawberries. The default size is a large. And also the Coconut Grass Jelly Milk Tea ($7.25) which has coconut milk, Jasmine tea, grass jelly, taro balls and sago. The default size is medium, you can upgrade to a large for an additional $0.80, but I didn't.
I picked up my UberEats order. When I placed my order the app said it would be ready in 12 minutes, so I motored it and got there in 14 minutes. Then I parked my car and opened the app and it said it wouldn't be ready for another 20 minutes. Uh ok. So I sat in my car and poked around on Yelp for 20 minutes, lol. Once the app said it was ready, the actual pickup was quick and staff were friendly.
When I got in my car, I noticed that the Strawberry drink was orange/yellow and not red/pink. I took a sip and it tasted like mango and pomelo instead of strawberries. There's a similar drink called Mango Pomelo Yogurt, which is like the Strawberry POPO Yogurt but has Mango and Pomelo instead of Strawberries, and sago instead of POPO, but my drink had POPO and not sago, yet Mango and Pomelo not Strawberries. So like a hybrid of both drinks I guess. The drinks are the same price, and I like mango and pomelo, and I didn't particularly feel like waiting around for them to remake the correct drink, so I just kept the incorrect drink.
It was pretty tasty actually. The yogurt was tart, the way I like it. I got the lowest allowable sugar content, which was "minimum sugar" ("no sugar" was not an option) and it was a bit too sweet for me, but still good. The mango and pomelo were good. The Fig Jelly was like Grass Jelly but clear and maybe a bit softer and not as solid. It also didn't have that herbal taste that Grass Jelly/Mesona Jelly has. I think Fig Jelly would appeal to more people than Grass Jelly. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the agar pearls in my drink. I'm assuming this is what they call POPO, but I don't know for sure. They were generous with the amount of toppings, which I appreciated.
The Coconut Grass Jelly Milk Tea was good too. I got it cold, no ice and no sugar. The sweetness was perfect for me, but I suspect most people would prefer some added sugar. This drink I think would also taste good hot. The coconut milk is very rich. I had to drink it over 2 days. It kept well in the fridge. This drink was very reminiscent of Vietnamese Che desserts.
I received the free Signature Milk Tea in an opaque paper cup that is usually used for hot drinks. Not sure why, since I ordered it cold, although with no ice and also no sugar. The drink itself was good (strong tea flavour, creamy and chewy pearls), but paled in comparison to the other 2 drinks.
The Clyde/Maitland/Merivale area is becoming quite the bubble tea haven. I actually think this area has the most concentration of bubble tea joints in the city. Glad to see Shuyi Tealicious joining the rest of them. read more
