Went for a birthday treat and ordered the following:
- Beef skewers
- Lamb skewers
- Beef tendon
- Chicken gizzard
- Squid
- Lamb brain
- Tofu sheet roll with coriander and spring onion
- Potato slice
- Chinese chive
- Stir fried raman noodle
The first thing to note is that the noodles (average), chives (tasty and moreish) and lamb brain (smooth with a lovely richness) aside, the rest are all similarly seasoned in a marvellous salty, cumin base. The flavour is deliciously mouthwatering so this isn't a criticism but just fair warning if you're after variety.
The beef and lamb skewers stand out the most with a beautiful combination of lean and fatty meat and the potatoes are also wonderful. I'd order the chives, brain and tofu sheet rolls again for mouthfeel balance but the rest can be skipped. The tendon promises much but was a touch under-seasoned while the squid and gizzard are average. Don't let these latter comments put you off however, Shu La La is well worth the visit. read more
