We Just happened to pick this restaurant as it was midway to home coming from Chesterfield area…read more As former restaurant owners and resort dining room managers we were more than pleasantly impressed with the menu and the food was absolutely wonderful. The restaurant is a open area, well lit, cozy, clean and styled simply. The restaurant has a simple Happy Hour menu for during the weekdays starting at 4:30pm. Inside seating are a few booths, stand alone & bar top tables, bar seating and a small shaded outdoor patio seating area. If you have a large party with more than 6 people calling ahead would be wise. The hostess was friendly and the manager was more than helpful. The food server was pleasant and understood my dietary restrictions and very helpful to ask the chef if it would be possible to accommodate a few menu options for me which they kindly agreed. We had an appetizer order of fried calamari which was very tender, lightly flour coated crispy rings and tentacles served with a delicious red sauce. Our entree order of 3 shrimp tacos was very tasty, tender and filling as was my special made order of mixed vegetables from the chef. We look forward to returning to try additional items off their menu as well as desserts which were reasonably priced and portions were very nice.

It's been a while since I revisited my review of Maaza 29…read more One of my newer favorites (although they've had it on the menu for some time) is their take on Gumbo. You may be asking yourself: "Gumbo in an Ethiopian restaurant?" The answer would be "hell yeah!" Their Gumbo is amongst the best Gumbo I've ever eaten. The Roux/gravy is rich and delicious - with a hint of brininess coming from the oysters. Paired up with the Andouille sausage - and sensational use of Ethiopian spices to add depth and complexity to the Gumbo... Well, I could eat this every day! I continue to enjoy their meatball appetizer named "Polpetti" - stuffed with Mozzarella - and served with a Bolognese sauce. They have a nice char on the outside of them. The Blue Crab Cake dish is still a favorite. It's served in a small white dish - with a spicy Awaze sauce drizzled over it. The lamb lollipops also kick ass. The chicken wings are also a favorite! I can't ever remember having a bad meal at Maaza 29! They have a nice wine selection, a few select craft beers, and an outstanding cocktail menu! The Mango-Chile Martini is a hit! #Maaza29

According to one of the lovely staff,"Bia" means food in Irish, in case you were curious. They have a full bar with lots of quality spirits to choose from. The beer selection is all draught, no bottled beer. We decided to share some appetizers with our drinks. We ordered PEI mussels, champagne peppercorn patè and fried calamari. All the appetizers were excellent. The patè was presented nicely with accoutrements of fig jam, cornichon, macerated tomatoes and bread. The mussels were offered in a Thai curry sauce but we asked for another serving option due to an allergy concerns. They offered us a white wine and garlic option and we gladly took it. The mussels were cooked very well, the flavor was clean and mild but could have used stronger seasoning, The fried calamari was executed perfectly. It was crispy, tender, flavorful with zero greasiness. The garlic tomato aioli accompanied the dish well. We shared the beef medallions as our entree and a side of fries because I spotted a server carrying fish and chips and the steak fries style potatoes were speaking to me. The steak was tender and flavorful and the Demi glaze brought the dish together. The fries were crispy and salty and wonderful, I'm glad I was inspired. We saved room for dessert and chose churros and Dubai chocolate. Both were a great finish to our dining experience.

Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the setting. We started with the Irish Nachos. The homemade thick‑cut chips were excellent, but the cheese sauce had no flavor and there wasn't nearly enough of it. All the bacon bits were clustered in one corner, leaving most of the dish bland. I ordered the "signature" short rib ravioli. While the presentation was nice, the pasta itself was tough, and the filling was a grey paste with no trace of meat or flavor. The capicola and prosciutto were similarly disappointing -- so underseasoned that we had to ask for salt and pepper just to make them taste like anything. Overall, a great-looking restaurant with friendly service, but the kitchen needs serious attention.

What a great place that begins a few feet before you get to the door and the staff have opened it…read morefor you. When dining here, I enjoy the superbly prepared food, a very high level of attention and a cozy, classy and quaint atmosphere. The restaurant is small but the food taste is large. Before I describe my courses, there were many bonus bites, starting with an amuse bouche and then other small and wonderful taste surprises between the courses. Had the small, bite-size food gifts been a full course, I would have been quite content. For example, one plate of small tasty delights had 5 items to enjoy. That little dishes included quail egg, beet, steak tartar, stuffed corn cakes, avocado mousse and corn jam and some creamy pistachio. There was also the delicate and frothy egg yolk with a ginger and carrot salad. I was also given a surprise small portion of delectable soup, which was root vegetable-based with a truffle cream dollop on top. I enjoyed the carrot and rich parsnip flavors in that soup. Of course, there was some fresh warm bread with a yummy, garlicky butter. i had a glass of champagne whcih had a light, clean grassy taste with an nice acidic bitterness. My three courses on the Prix Fixe menu started with the Tagliatelle aux fruits de mer parfumee a la truffle. This seafood pasta dish, with a truffle accent, was a wonderful balance between the earthy flavor and the slightly sweet and perfectly-seared scallops. The next course was a Bourride de fruits de mer. This dish is a seafood stew in a tomato soup. As usual, the flavor combination is so sublime and so interesting on the tongue. The soup arrived with a slice of flavorful garlic bread, perched above the bowl which was holding fresh seafood on the surface. The final course was La bombe au chocolat. This is a rich dark chocolate and raspberry mousse in a deep hot chocolate sauce. Of course, the chef was so kind in sending out another bonus dish with a type of of kouign-amann, a wonderfully tasty lime tart and yummy chocolate truffles in the center. What a spectacular experience!

They made her feel completely safe and included by providing an experience just as elevated and refined as the standard menu. We began with a beautiful progression of hors d'oeuvres and a silky lobster bisque, followed by perfectly seared scallops. For the main courses, the venison was tender and masterfully seasoned, while the lobster was a delicate and buttery triumph. The in-between courses really set this restaurant apart. We loved the thoughtful amuse-bouche to start and the chocolate pre-dessert that served as the perfect bridge to our final courses. We finished with a dramatic Chocolate Bomb and a classic Grand Marnier Crème Brûlée, followed by a lovely plate of mignardises to close the evening. Fleurie is the gold standard for French dining in Charlottesville. It is intimate, professional, and genuinely caring about dietary needs. This is a must-visit for any special occasion.

The dining room had a sense of modern rustic if that is a thing. The chairs were surprisingly comfortable allowing us to focus on each other and the meal to come. The playlist was "gen X friendly" with a nice twist to some of the songs and the volume was just right for conversing. The service surpassed our every expectation. Water glasses never reached half, the table was well tended to and the conversation with the staff members was pleasurable and enlightening as to us, they are more than servers. But for a few hours get to know a little about us as well when all others in our lives are mere passerby's, even if soon to be forgotten. Always a smile, well explained dishes and attentive to any needs. The food, oh that amazing food! As said, every dish explained in perfect detail as if to instill a sense of taste before even touching our tongues. Each dish's aroma awoken our palate, but still could not do the plate justice of the flavors we would soon experience. If their green tomato soup is ever repeated, prepare yourself. You may need a cigarette after tasting. And Jake (owner) served our wines for each dish, perfectly paired and presented with notes not only on the taste, but the reason behind the pairing. Just as his wife Sara, he was a welcomed presence to our table and enjoyed our light spirited conversation and laughter. Thank you to Jake and Sara and more importantly the entire staff at the Three Blacksmiths! You made our anniversary an amazing opportunity to share in what you painstakingly craft for others to enjoy.

Okay, bestie. If you're even thinking about going here, make that reservation yesterday. It's tiny,…read moreexclusive, and books out months in advance. Totally worth the hype. This isn't your casual night out. It's a full-on food adventure. You walk in and the vibe is already cozy and storybook-like. It's in this adorable little town near Old Rag Mountain (hello, perfect weekend getaway), and the restaurant used to be an actual blacksmith shop. They lean into the theme: your table has your name on it with a tiny anvil, there's a semi-open kitchen and wood-burning hearth, and the whole space feels warm and personal. The stars here are Sarah and Jake, the owners and chefs. They greet you themselves, chat with you like old friends, and then basically feed you a love letter disguised as a tasting menu. The food changes, but here's the vibe: * Little bites to kick things off (think three creative amuses that set the tone). * Dishes that pull from everywhere. One course might be an Asian-inspired dumpling in coconut broth, the next a perfectly refined European ravioli stuffed with fried chicken and veggies. * Wagyu beef cheeks that cook for 18 hours until they practically melt. * Bread service so good you'll be praying they bring more (they do). Every dish is beautifully plated and nothing is heavy or overdone. Everything just hits. Now, the wine pairing. They offer a regular and a reserve tier, and you can do half pours, which I highly recommend if you're driving back (we came from Arlington, about 1.5 hours). The wines themselves are incredible, from European classics to a killer ice wine from Washington State, and they match the food perfectly. A few heads-ups: * There's one seating per night. Everyone dines together, which makes it feel special and communal. * The cost is no joke. For two people with the reserve half pairings and one espresso, we spent around $300 per person. * They charge your card for the reservation ahead of time, then again for the meal and any drinks separately. * Service charge (22%) is already included, and they send you home with a cookie instead of a check (which, honestly, is iconic). We've been wanting to visit for about seven years but always hesitated because of the long drive. This year, we decided to go for it and booked a reservation in March for an October dinner, just to put the demand into perspective. By the end, we were full but not stuffed, a little buzzed, and very, very happy. It's the kind of meal that makes you want to slow down and savor life. Bonus tip: plan a hike or hit a winery while you're out there. Sperryville and the surrounding area are gorgeous. Five stars, no question. If you're celebrating something special or just want to treat yourself to an unforgettable meal, this is the place.
