The low down: There are two parts to this place, the cafe and then attached to the back of the cafe is a door that takes you through another door to the bar. The food was terrific and the service was a little slow but it was the guys first night so we cut him some slack. Clean and some interesting decorating in the bar area (see photos). Also, states online that there is a cover charge of $5 when a live band is there. we weren't charged one, but we're prepared to pay if needed. Fun fact: For a small price you can take a ceiling tile, paint it and bring it back. When you bring it back they will refund your money (they take the money incase you never bring the tile back) I'm so excited to write this review because what seemed like it would be horrible ended up being so much fun! Looking for a new place to hear live music that's off the beaten path I turned to my YELP community and found this place. I wasn't really sure they were still open because when you call the number it rings and rings and then there is a recording that says "voicemail isnt set up". Decided to drive out there to Spring Hope anyway (about 20 min away from where I live in Rolesville). We sa We pulled up around 7:30pm and the place looked closed. Virtually no cars, lights dim but there was a blinking sign that said OPEN. We walk in and NOTHING, no live music, no bar, just a few tables and only about 3 of the tables even had people seated. We stood there for about 2 minutes waiting for someone to address us(there was no one to be found). Finally a nice lady came out from the back. We asked her about the bar and live music that was advertised and she pointed to a door at the back of the restaurant and said...it's through there, you'll hear the music after you open the door. So excited that there was, in fact, live music we eagerly head to the door and open it. We hear nothing! We walk through the hallway and see a bar. There was one lady sitting at the bar. The rest of the bar was empty. We said to her.. we heard there was live music here and she said .. oh there is, they are taking a break. So we sat at the bar, Looking around we noticed some unique decorating. There were Barbie dolls hanging from the ceiling and supposedly each one represents a person. A bartender asked us if we wanted a food menu. I read from YELP that their food was great so we decided to place an order. We ordered a tuna sandwich w rosemary fries. YELP community is right, the food was delicious. My picture doesn't do it justice. The band came in from their intermission along w about 4 other patrons. The band was really good, playing country cover songs. We left early (about 9:30pm) and at that time there were only about 12 people there. The place really was awesome and more people should check it out. The band was great, the service was good(it was the bartenders first night) and the people that were there were super friendly. It's a much different vibe than what you get when you go out in Raleigh.

Great food! We're looking forward to returning and trying more items on the menu. Make sure you grab one of those tasty cookies too!

The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.

One of my sons has been affected the same way, we didn't eat the same thing. Server prioritized others ahead of us (waited about 10 mins to be asked for a drink order, meanwhile filling a drink order for 4 cops who came in 10 minutes after us). Prices looked great, portion size was large but the food itself was a big meh. I asked if they could cook their burgers to temp, got a resounding Yes they can....I asked for a medium burger and it came out well done. I was asked by two people how it was, which I answered "It was ok" - nobody wanted more details. IMHO they have an established base they cater hardest too and they don't extend that service to new customers. Makes the old timers feel great however we'll never be regulars. We won't be back. I get supporting those who support you, but that's hardly a long term sustainable model. Hope you're ready for when those folks dwindle off. Then, I moved inside to see what the delay was, and the host tried to seat me at the counter. Really? I'd been waiting 30 minutes, and you won't seat me at the empty table. So I declined and said I'd wait for my table. I never got a notice on my phone either, so what was the point of that system if you need to be inside the small waiting area to be called? I could see the open table, but I was not seated for another ten minutes. They didn't want me at the big table. Then it was interesting to watch all the staff walk by and ask who had my table. How do they not know which tables each person has? Someone eventually came by, asked if I'd been helped, and took my drink and food orders, since I'd been waiting quite a while. I ordered a half-and-half tea. I'm not sure she knew what that was, as she kept saying "unsweet". The first tea was half-and-half, but the refill was unsweetened. I went with the chicken pot pie, as that is what caught my eye. I expected a delicious dish, but what I received was disappointing. The ratio of the chicken, gravy and veggies was way off. I'd say there was enough low-quality processed chicken for three to four people, a little gravy and even less veggies. I had a bowl of processed chicken cubes with a splash of sauce, not what I had in mind. I usually skip the pastry part, but I ate that as I needed something other than chicken. I left some of the chicken in the dish. The waitress didn't even offer me a to-go box. It was that bad that I wouldn't eat it anyway. My check was brought out soon after I got my food. I don't understand the rush, but bringing the check early won't get me out any faster and lowers your tip. This was just a really bad experience, and I don't see myself returning. I have liked the food in the past.
