Mushroom shwarma
Gaurav B.

How do I start? Fried Oyster mushrooms sounds so Shouk'n Good ! We had to try this place. We have had vegetarian shawarma before but most places its the impossible or beyond meat or some sort of fusion soy crumbles. Never tried a oyster mushroom shawarma before. Shawarma itself was so well seasoned and flavorful went so well other options that we picked in the platter. We really wanted to try the Fried Mushroom schnitzel sandwich but they didn't have it at that time so we decided to go for Falafel platter and the falafels so were different form other places, packed with flavor. Pita was so soft and fluffy unlike I have had before and yes I had tried Pita in hundreds of different food joints. Can't wait to be back for fried mushroom sandwich and the shouk burger.

Food is so fresh and tasty Shewarma made from mushrooms, Wow! Service is great and quality Great value for my money Love the atmosphere

Great falafel place that's possibly the best in the DMC area, according to my wife. Service is good as well, but the atmosphere could use some improvement. Be sure to get the white sauce and spread that _______ on everything; it's sooooo nom nom good .

Fried Shouk'n, Spice Fries, and build your own bowl

I had a fantastic meal at Shouk! This all vegan business excels providing Israeli inspired food with plenty of flavor. Shouk has fairly limited indoor seating and has three tables outside. It is certainly plenty of room for 2-4 people to dine in. Additionally their bathroom has a changing table which makes this a really family friendly option. As a new mom I am now noting what bathrooms are compatible for diaper changes. To order your meal you use their touchscreen kiosk. You can also scan a QR code from the Shouk app to accumulate points and redeem discounts. My absolute favorite meal is the fried Shouk'n sandwich with spiced fries. The fried oyster mushrooms are a crispy and chewy texture. I get the sauce on the side to make sure the pita is not drenched in too much creaminess. And I love the veggies included in this sandwich that add some lightness and tang to the pita. The French fries are spiced so well and always come out perfectly cooked. The portion size of fries is also generous. I can never finish my side and always offer for people to help me finish them. Shouk also has a build your own bowl option which is fantastic. You can pick 8 items as the base and then pay extra for falafel or other specialty items. I love assembling my own bowl so I dan out all my favorite veggies in. The food at Shouk comes out quickly. I think the staff at this location work hard and are very friendly. I am making my meals at Shouk more regular because it's a very quick meal to pick up and the quality is always great.

Fried Shouk'n and Shawarma

Shouk came up on a lunch search I did in the area. We decided to take a chance with a new place and were well rewarded for this chance. Pros: Two screens to place your order on with pictures of all the food. I love seeing what my food will look like before ordering so I loved this. Easy to pay and go. Amazing food-it took about 20 minutes from the time we ordered until we got the food, so it was fresh. Everything tasted amazing and the coconut pudding was the most unique thing I've tried in the last month. I could eat that every day. Cons: There's seating inside but all large four seater tables when most of the people that came in while we were there were couples. There wasn't enough seating for everyone that came in. Next time I'll order take out. The food didn't come with any indication of what was in either of the boxes and since I forgot what I ordered, it was a little confusing. There were only two of us, but if it was a larger group I could see that being frustrating. The restaurant has kind of an awkward layout. The trash, which is right next to the door, causes unnecessary people flow issues. We had to the hold door and wait for people who were sorting their trash because there wasn't enough space to pass them, which was fine except there was a line of people waiting throw things away, which meant we just stood with the door open looking for a break in the trash line to get in. Overall, I really liked Shouk and will come back for takeout soon.

Classic Falafel

I was extremely impressed by my experience at Shouk. When you walk in you order on a computer screen. The wait for the food took about 5 minutes. There is some indoor and outdoor seating but not too much so keep this in mind. Personally, I got my meal to go. I started with the classic falafel which was amazing. It was also extremely filling as the portion size was quite large. I didn't feel too bad about that though because I knew it was plant-based and fresh. I finished with the choco-cardamom cookie which melts in your mouth (just as described on the menu). This is a great option for those who are dairy free, vegan, vegetarian, or kosher. Can't wait to go back!

Hummus

Got the Shouk burger which was fantastic as usual. Also had the hummus and lentil soup. The pita just smelled and tasted so wonderful and soft as a pillow. Then I got the malabi, a coconut milk pudding which was also amazing. I just love Shouk. Naturally Plant based and truly good fast casual cuisine with no fanfare or fuss. You have my heart!

Shawarma Mushroom sandwich

Rockville location: kind of get a 'dive' feel when you walk in. I wouldn't characterize it as inviting, warm, or very clean. I was apprehensive but determined to give it a try because I love mushrooms! There were a couple of people hanging around waiting for their orders. It's small, the walls beg for fresh paint, the floor could use some updating (different shades of concrete), and an overall vibe of the need for a good old-fashioned scrubbing. So, if you've never been, you walk up to the counter and place your order via a touchscreen. We found seats and waited. After we got our order - my wife got the falafel and I got two pocket sandwiches to try, the fried mushroom and the mushroom shawarma - we dug in. I cannot express my surprise and delight at how delicious the food is there! Even the side kale salad was excellent. The mushrooms were succulent, flavorful, rich, and paired wonderfully with the pocket sandwich additions. I have decided that I can't decide which one is my favorite, so when I go again, and I will, I'll have a hard time choosing. Or...maybe get both again

The food was soo good! We got the bowls and loved them. It was nice that the whole place is plant based so we didn't have to worry about anything. The service was great and the place was very nice and cute. It was a great place for a chill hangout.

The word "Shouk" means open air market in Hebrew. It specializes in plant based foods that use fresh vegetables, grains, legumes, and seeds. Truthfully, I was a little hesitant to try Shouk, until my son in law, who is a chef, raved about it. I thought it would be the perfect game day meal. I ordered humus and the felafel sandwich. Ordering was so easy. You come in and order on a screened computer in the front of the restaurant. The computer prompts you, if you don't want any items in the dish or if you want to add on menu items. I took out the onion on my sandwich. The people working there were very pleasant and nice. I was in and out in about 5 minutes. I liked the middle Eastern decor. The hamsa hand on the wall stands for good luck. Well, my food was absolutely delicious. The breads are made in house and they are fresh and tender. The hummus was one of the best I have ever eaten. It was light, creamy, and flavorful. I couldn't stop eating it. Then, the felafel sandwich was packed full of huge felafel balls, fresh cucumber, and tomatoes. The tahini sauce on top was really tasty. The felafel balls were so tender and spiced perfectly. They melted in your mouth. The sandwich was huge and I ate it in two sittings. Probably, because I ate too much humus. Lol! Well, this may have been my first time, but it definitely won't be my last. My brother in law recommended trying the chicken nuggets. They are made from mushrooms. Next time, I will give those a try. This food is wonderful and I could not tell it was plant based. So, healthy and packed with flavor, this is a win-win celebration! Thanks Shouk.

We stopped by Shouk to try their new Crab Cake sandwich, and it didn't disappoint. As a Marylander, I'm VERY picky about crab cakes, and I have to hand it to Shouk for their ambition in creating a vegan version. The texture was spot on - if I closed my eyes, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, except that it was a bit bland, flavor-wise. Still, a vegan crab cake that actually felt like crab cake? You gotta give this a try. High marks for their Shouk Sausage and Malabi, too. Of all the vegan places trying to make it in this world, Shouk is on the right track.

We loved the spring rolls so much that we ended up ordering two orders of them, so between the two of us, we had four pieces each! They were just that good. For my main entrée, I ordered the Peking "duck" and it was phenomenal. Honestly, even though I've never actually had the real version, I can't imagine it tasting any better than this. The restaurant itself is really cute and comfortable, with plenty of seating in both booths and tables. The service was also great. Our server was a sweet older woman who was so kind and took the time to answer all of my questions. I would definitely come back here again, whether you're a vegetarian or not.

I came to find this place through a recommendation on Reddit and after looking at the many positives reviews on yelp and google, I just knew I had to come eat here. We came here on a Saturday at 3:30 pm and the inside was empty but more people came in later on. The interior had an older timely feel and was very spacious with many table around that could hold a big party if needed. For appetizer, we ordered the steam dumplings and for the entree we had the pineapple fried rice & the crispy orange chicken with broccoli. The dumpling came out fairly quickly and tasted good. Dip that dumpling into that sauce to elevate that flavor. The pineapple fried rice portion was decent and the taste was amazing. Season perfectly and you can see the chef cooking in the back through a small window, I see him using that wok technique to give my fried rice that " wok hay smoke flavor". For the crispy chicken it was cook nicely and come with a bowl of rice. Rice mix with the sauce and eaten with the chicken was tasty. The staff were very friendly and refilled our water when it was low, very attentive to our needs. All in all, had a positive experience here and would highly recommend anyone to come and try some amazing food here atleast once.

The carrot/cabbage and greens were fresh and tasty. I probably wouldn't get the rice again. It was fine, but served mostly to fill me up rather than add flavor. Japanese Katsu Curry Bowl ($15.00) plus $1.00 for greens and $0.50 for extra curry sauce. My partner enjoyed this dish, but thought the curry flavor could have been stronger. Also, they probably wouldn't get the extra sauce again. Overall, good bowls. We'll be back. One disappointment is that there is no way to "build your own bowl." I asked the server, and she said you can ask to substitute an item on one of their main bowls, but there's no "create your own" option. Since you order from a kiosk, it seems that could be straightforward, with the price adjusted based on what you add in, but I guess not here. That will limit the number of times I come here, because I prefer the option for variety. Ordering vis kiosk also doesn't allow you to order the sauce "on the side," which is another unnecessary (IMHO) limitation.

I've tried a lot of things on the menu, and bottom line is I still think their Medley Loaf Combo Bowl is the best entree. I wish there was more loaf! It's so good and has a salty deep umami flavor which goes perfectly well with the shredded medley and other goodies in the bowl. However, there was a bit too much rice and carrot in my opinion this time. Still thought it was pretty good. I also ordered the Japanese Katsu Curry Bowl. I've gotten this one before too and thought it was really good, but today I found the curry a little bland, and again, the rice-to-protein ratio was way off (too much rice). Probably won't get this again and stick to the Medley Loaf Combo.

Although my husband and I are omnivores we appreciate good plant based food, and since many had said it was good, we had high hopes. Fortunately, Planta lived up to our expectations. We made reservations, since we'd heard it can be hard to get a table. Even though it was a Friday night, we could have gotten a table. But, it was also raining so that might have contributed to lower traffic. We ended up getting a bunch of food to share: Spinach & artichoke dip Bang Bang Broccoli Thousand layer potatoes Spicy Tuna Roll Volcano Roll Red Dragon Roll Unagi Nigiri (I didn't try this one, but everyone else raved about it) My husband had the Emperor's Old Fashioned, friends had the Lych Please and the Pom and Get It. I, as designated driver, had a Cosmic Colada followed by the House Mint Lemonade (and I had a sip of the Lych Please just to taste it.) My favorites were the Bang Bang Broccoli, the Spicy Tuna Roll, and to my surprise, the Thousand Layer Potatoes. I also loved the House Mint Lemonade. The broccoli managed to not actually taste like broccoli, it tasted like Fried with Peanut Sauce. (No, there is not a missing word there. It tasted like Fried.) I usually don't get excited about potatoes unless they are twice baked or the amazing potato salad from Polka deli, but these potatoes were actually really good. Sliced, layered, not exactly crispy except on the edges, but super tasty much to my surprise. I'd actually order them again. The Spicy Tuna Roll tasted nothing like tuna, nor did it taste like watermelon per se but it was delicious. The notes of coconut probably played a role in my assessment. Folks in general were less enamored of the Volcano roll than the other dishes and I concurred. It wasn't bad, it just was lackluster compared to the others. It tasted kind of like a salad dressed with a lack of oomph. While I personally liked the spinach & artichoke dip, the folks in the party who aren't coconut-o-philes thought it had too much of a coconut taste. I've never met a coconut I didn't like though so this didn't bother me. I would order the Lych Please if I weren't driving, it was good - sweet but not too sweet. The Cosmic Colada wasn't bad but I probably wouldn't order it again either. It had less of the coconut flavor than I hoped for and a lot more just "juice" flavor. If I'm not driving next time I'll just suck down the house mint lemonades instead. All in all, it was good. I'd definitely come back and order some of these items again and hopefully try some others. So one random week I decided to contact them just to inquire about their prices, flavors and such (I found this info on their website). They actually didn't respond until over a week later, and I realized it was because they were out of the country! So they let me know when they would be returning and so I contacted them again then. By some insane twist of fate, the day they said to contact them also happened to be National Donut Day -- obviously a sign. It turns out they don't have delivery right now (probably because they just returned?) so I had to arrange a pickup. They're $4 a pop, so I decided to just get half a dozen: Cinnamon Sugar Chocolate Oreo Mango Pistachio Rose Raspberry Pina Colada I arrived at the house, waited a few minutes, and the man came to the door with the donut box in hand. The donuts looked awesome too! Then I went to my sister's and surprised them with vegan donuts for the special day -- great feedback all around. The flavors popped, the texture of the donut was light and had me not feeling too guilty, and they looked nice! It was totally unexpected to find a vegan donut spot so close to my sister, and to be family-run is lovely! They have an interesting history on their website, you should give it a read!

The hummus is very good. The babaganoush is very smokey. The falafel are the best I have found other than the world famous Maoz, I just wish they were bigger so they would stay hot and moist longer. T. $6 for 5 doesn't feel right when I could eat 20 of them so unfortunately I won't be ordering them again. The falafel are clearly labeled vegan and gluten free, as are many other items. The sauces are very good and they squirt them from bottles that dispense a generous amount. The meat unfortunately does not come right off the spit but is held in a metal bin like chipotle so they can keep the line moving, but you can see the 3 giant spits roasting away in the back. The last thing I love about this place is that you get something you simply can not make at home. Even if you make shawarma style chicken and have rice and greens, there's no way you're making hummus and babaganoush and all the sauces and then you'd also have to buy 20 ingredients for the toppings... It's the same idea as chipotle or if you know Cava, it's more like that. The price starts at $12.99 and the only thing that raises the price is if you get lamb or steak or double meat. All toppings are included. It's worth mentioning again, the hummus is very good, perhaps the best I've ever had. Not only great flavor but it's the creamiest smoothest hummus.

I usually get the half rice/half greens chicken shawarma bowl and appreciate that you can pick pretty much all the toppings. The hummus and pita crisps being two of my faves! I also got the falafel which was delicious. This is a weekly staple for me and I can't wait to be back for more!

Wow, Oh Mama Grill sure has gotten an upgrade! Beautiful tiles, love the black-and-white, crisp,…read moreclean look, and new booths -- though I didn't try sitting in one yet, didn't think to as I was on a mission to get to all the Israeli restaurants around for and on Israel Independence Day, ha ha! (And yes! I succeeded!) The benches are a light, bright-looking wood. There are also regular tables for those who prefer that .... It's amazing how much spacious seating is packed into this little place! I wish the outside reflected the new, light beauty but I guess the treasure is only to be found by those who venture in .... As an Israeli-in-America, I appreciate the selection of Israeli drinks in the cooler, and of course the national snack of falafel! Some say they don't put fries in the pitas -- well, yeah! That's true! If you don't ask, you don't receive! I ask! I receive! I do sometimes find the sandwiches to be kind of messy, so I try to sometimes get less various salads and pickles and such so it's not completely overflowing -- because this place is GENEROUS! Of course, if you're not used to kosher food, you'll probably not understand that it does cost more because for one thing (out of many!), there has to always be an 'extra' person called a mashgiach (supervisor in Hebrew) who oversees everything to make sure it's all, well, kosher! Kosher meat is more expensive, too. And yeah, meat doesn't come with dairy! So that is not available. I heard someone asking if they had a cheeseburger and had to work to not crack up about it! I LOVE the grilled eggplant bits you can get put in -- they're special, not in the regular line up, right there at the end -- because not only do they add so much flavour and texture with so little bulk, but eggplant is one of those things I usually cannot eat because it hurts my oh-so-sensitive tongue, but this place makes it per-fect-ly, mmm ... ! So delicious! I enjoy both purple and green cabbage and carrots, but I don't like the flavour of the onions. That makes me sad, because I LOVE onions, but these ones have something on them that I don't like (looks like it's sumac -- which is ironic, because that's something that I normally love and use all the time!) and I end up picking out when I sometimes forget or get hopeful and just get them again anyway .... Actually, the onions are one of the few condiments here I do not like! The pickled beets are great -- and of course, great for your liver! They are cleansing, nutritious, and boost your Russian-ness, to boot! Or your Russian Jewishness, anyway .... I know that eating them makes my grandmother proud! The benefits of eating here are not and are also not like ones you can attain in just any regular restaurant, and it's here for people who want this kind of thing. It literally is a cornerstone, being on the corner and providing the things certain of us need -- Israeliness, Jewishness, kosherness, etc. It's too bad it suffers from bad reviews by people who don't understand or care. By the way, the work that goes into making all these salad items fresh every day is, let's just say, a LOT! I almost always get the falafel -- I used to get a platter, but it was too much for a meal so I switched back to the classic pita version and that's a perfect amount for me for a meal, plus I feel it's better for the environment because it comes packaged minimally in a little parchment paper rather than a recyclable aluminum plate with a non-recyclable aluminum-and-paper top. Truth be told, I could have trouble finishing writing this review because thinking of Oh Mama Grills' falafel is making me so hungry! I am really getting in the mood for some right now! Other things I eat from here regularly (and have for years): Israeli salad Moroccan (vegetarian) cigars Rice Other things I know are great by way of seeing the delight on my eating partner's face while consuming: Okay, I so I don't remember, but various meat things! Chicken, I think .... Things I don't love from Oh Mama Grill: Bean soup -- didn't have enough flavour for me .... Sabich. I dunno. Just didn't love it! It's hard to top falafel, in my opinion -- well, this falafel from this place, that is -- so I don't feel the need to explore the menu very much .... There aren't a whole lot of places (if any!) that offer such a variety of salads, pickles, and sauces! As an absolute pickle-lover who finds pickles and not just that but a variety of pickles a MUST for my diet, this place has it going on like no other! Update! Tried sitting on a bench at a booth! It's pretty hard, not super-comfortable, but doable -- however, a harder seat is better for your posture and health long-term! The falafel pita with toppings aplenty is so delicious, I am craving one right now ... and, in case you've ever tried some of the marinated types of vegetables here and found them too sour, I did too! Now, that is fixed. They are no longer so sour, and are therefore much more eminently edible! My eating partner agrees.

Being a vegan, there is plenty to select from to include in my falafal sandwich such as hummus,…read moreeggplant pieces, salads, fries, different veggies, etc. Their policy is to first pay at the register, order there, then join the line at the buffet where servers behind the counter will make the sandwich, dishes or whatever you select. Sometimes it is a bit crowded and customers are talking over each other. The restaurant is small, so we order for take out. very good and clean food.
