Juan at JS Automotive was one of the only ones to pick up and would at least diagnosis the issue that day. I called everyone I could find and most said next week or next month or no call back. When we arrive, it was as promised. They immediately checked the issue and found the problem. Luckly parts were locally available that day. JS Automotive fixed it that day and we were able to continue our trip. From the outside the shop doesn't look like much and is situated in an alleyway. The guys at JS Automotive were great. From a pricing standpoint, they prices were what I would expect from any mechanic.

We narrowed the sound down to the transfer case and drove the truck to the Chevron in Mammoth. They put it up on the lift, and confirmed the transfer case and recommended Jim Allen's Auto-Matics in Bishop, CA. I called and spoke with Brett the owner of Allen's Auto-Matics. I made an appointment with him for Monday July 6th and delivered my truck to him. Brett also diagnosed the swishing sound and unfortunately for me, the Ram needed a rebuilt transfer case. What fast service, in on Monday, July 6, and out on Wednesday July 8. Thank you Brett for taking me in on short notice and getting me back on the road like a pit crew at a NASCAR race. We left Mammoth on Thursday, July 9 and drove 314 miles to SoCal without any issues. I highly recommend Brett at Jim Allen's Auto-Matics in Bishop, CA.

After I looked at his Yelp page, I agreed to have him do the repairs. Eric Laettner's Mobile Mechanic Service was excellent! I posted what I needed on Yelp at 2:20 pm. We agreed to have him do the work. He let me know he was finishing another job and would be here in the late afternoon. He showed up and had already picked up the parts he might need. He had my car up off the ground, removed all four tires, and checked them. Checked brake pads, rotors, and connections he could see. He completed the work at about 9 pm. -From posting the request for repairs to finishing was in a 7-hour time frame! -I didn't need to drive to a repair shop. -He explained the process and handled my questions. -My cost was 50% less than what I was quoted at the local repair shops. -This was my first time using a mobile service for mechanical work. Here I am driving my 1979 Bus east over the Sonora Pass and really enjoying life. Just saw good…read morefriends in the Bay Area and now taking in the beauty north of Yosemite. I stop in Lee Vining for fuel - and what happens? The bus won't start. Of course, it won't start. I'm stuck 350 miles from home. At least its summer and not snowing.... After several attempts to self-diagnose the problem, and a recommendation from the Lee Vining Shell station (a great guy named Shelley), the bus was towed to Bishop and taken to Sierra German where I eventually met Tim Miller. He took interest immediately and noted some problems with fuel seepage. Being the only noted VW mechanic for some hundreds of miles around, he was busy with work - and the pandemic wasn't helping. Anyway, he traced the main problem to a frayed wire to the cylinder head sensor and also a bad electric connection to the air box. He noted a few other things "that should be taken care of" too. All in all, the experience was top notch and my bus came alive and made it home. Bishop is a great small town in a beautiful part of California - so the pace there is understandably different than the bigger urban areas of the State. I read some of the other yelp reviews before heading to Sierra German. That said, Tim was responsive to my plight and is an expert I'd seek out again if I'm ever passing by within a 200 mile radius of Bishop. On the wide, open road that is California and Nevada, Tim's shop is now on my list of reliable mechanics.
