How lucky Bishop is to have this shop in town. Our Sprinter van had front wheel bearing issues which Big O in Gardnerville attempted to fix. When the defective Mercedes parts failed, Juan at JS Automotive saved us. Everyone in town seems to know (and love) him, but as out-of-towners, we were just lucky to find him. Our tires on our travel trailer had nails in them. We didn't even realize this while driving through Bishop on our way home to LA. I can't believe how lucky we were to find Juan and his shop. My truck broke down coming home from snowboarding in Mammoth. We were 3 hours from home and it was 5:45pm with not a single shop open except for his. I was able to limp the truck to his shop where he found the part immediately and was able to fix it within 2 hours, despite having to make a pit stop to drop off his kids. He stayed open an extra hour to get me back on the road. He even topped off my oil and coolant as they were both a smidge low. He could have charged me an arm and a leg and I would have had to pay it, however, the price he gave me was extremely reasonable. So, my son-in-law and I had filled-up with gas, at Bishop and we were heading up the grade to Mammoth and ultimately to June Lake for 5-days of camping, hiking, and fishing. At about Vista Point on US 395 northbound, my engine stopped. We coasted to the shoulder safely and tried to restart: Nothing! A couple hours later, AAA got us towed. The AAA authorized repair shop was logged jammed for 2 weeks, but JS Automotive a non-AAA shop, might be better suited so we went there. Juan, the owner of JS Automotive, was jammed too but he would work on my car in between scheduled repairs. He discovered that plastic had melted from the engine heat and wrapped its way around the timing belt and cog. It would take a few days to fix. So we ended up in BW because of the free breakfast. If there is a place to hold-over for car repair, Bishop is it. The people are friendly and helpful. We spent 3-days reading and waiting for our car at the public library near Juan's shop. By Thursday afternoon, I got a new timing belt and clean engine. Juan understood our situation and did a great job. His costs were reasonable too. He and his wife, Lupita, are great people. read more

Juan is not only an amazing mechanic but a very caring person. Our car recently broke down while we were 300 miles from home. Juan stayed open late for us while our car was towed to him. When we arrived he offered us cold water and a place to rest while he looked at our car. My friend and I were traveling thru Bishop when my car suddenly developed brake trouble. I was super worried that this would ruin our planned road trip thru the Eastern Sierras. Another local mechanic told me that I had an oil leak that he couldn't fix and my only option was to take my car to the dealership in Ridgecrest.  That sounded like odd advice, so I took my car into Juan to have him look it over.  Juan diagnosed it as a minor leak and told me that I could wait to fix it until the car's next oil change.  Even though he's incredibly busy, Juan took the time to show me exactly what was wrong, fix my oil pan shield, and gave me advice about replacing my tires. As promised, were ready to go that next afternoon. Our car purred all the way home - no further problems occurred. We appreciated Juan's service with our car. We were lucky to call the right person to help us when we needed assistance - our story could have had a way different ending had he not picked up the phone that night. Absolutely wonderful service by Juan. Our Honda Odyssey had brake issues when we were coming back from Lone Pine to San Jose. The brakes were squishy, and needed to be pumped 3~4 times to have some effect. Went to 3 other shops in Bishop first - they were all booked up and won't even look at it (Terrell at Bishop Automotive Center was rude - there are polite ways to decline service, no need to be rude). Then came to JS Automotive - the shop appearance doesn't inspire confidence, to be honest :) But don't let that deter you! Juan knows his craft. He took us in even though he was neck deep in cars, and had us out in 2 hours with brake fluid flush, de-glazing the pads, lubricating stuck slide pins all done! Very polite, and wonderful to talk to. When you leave your car with him, you get the confidence that he will get to the bottom of the problem, and the repair work will be top notch. And some shops fleece you knowing that you're tourists passing through and they have you by the balls. Not Juan - very reasonable pricing. Can't recommend JS Automotive enough! read more

I've been meaning to do this for a while. I had a great experience with JS Automotive. We were out of town and stranded. I called multiple places and no one would take us in that day. Luckily, I talked to a local who pointed me in the right direction. I was impressed that they looked at other diagnoses (they found a burnt fuse, etc.) before concluding that I needed an alternator. It was very thorough. The pricing was reasonable. The customer service was awesome. There's also a guarantee on the part he replaced. My car is still running well.
