The ribs were great. The green beans were good too. The chicken was pretty good, but the skin for some reason super tough like how it gets when you microwave or reheat it the next day, hard to explain and describe but I couldn't bite the skin no matter how hard I tried, super tough. So I removed the skin and the meat on the inside was good. It was just a little disappointing because I love BBQ chicken skin and didn't get to eat it. We were on our way back from the bay area with empty bellies and wanted a good BBQ place. So of course I consulted Yelp (surprising, I know) and found this gem. I was a little apprehensive about it being that is in the bowling alley but was too starving to care. We were given a very friendly greeting. The employees/owners were very nice and welcoming. We even spoke with Dave for quite some time, he challenged my hubby to try a super spicy sauce they had. Needless to say it was a little more than he prefers but he was a good sport. But the owner did warn him to only take a little and he decided to drunk a piece of meet in it, so he brought it upon himself. My husband and I both ordered 2 meat dinner place. I got the ribs and the brisket with greens and mac&cheese. My hubby got the trip tip and links. With coleslaw and mac&cheese. We shared the meets and I have to say everything was super delicious. The links were a little spicy for me but good. Tri tip was so flavorful and tender. Ribs are excellent! And the brisket was very delicious however I prefer slices and this was cut up into bits and seemed to have lost a lot of the bark that I love so much. The greens were good but I think needed something, other places I've been do they put pork or bacon for extra flavor which I prefer. Mac and cheese was good. I did not try his coleslaw. YES! Your reading this correctly. Dave Shorter and his families BBQ business are back In action,! With one tiny exception. Shorter's BBQ is now located ancient the West Valley Bowling Alley. But I promise, Dave is back to serving up his still great BBQ plates you've come to love, especially Mom's BBQ Spaghetti. Keep in mind if you plan on visiting Shorter's anytime soon that, they just reopened and their place is and probably will be under construction for sometime to come. A prolonged work in progress if I may be so bold. I don't recall the exact number but, since 2000 and just months before Dave Shorter took over his current digs, this new place was the home to approximately four other restaurants. And with the arrival and departure of each place that has passed, they all took a hand in making some kind of change to the place. Be it in the kitchen or the exterior, changes were made. Two stars for my pulled pork sandwich, but 4 stars for the yummy bbq sauce and friendly service.. When I order pulled pork, I expect shredded pork.. Yet my sandwich had chunks of pork.. Dave is an extraordinary chef, owner and entertainer. The brisket, chicken, ribs and sides were served hot and tasty.

I was in a bind, after a Spartan Race at the Diablo Grande country club, I was cold, hungry, and sore. I wanted BBQ, but the selection around here is limited. Seeing the high review ratings of Shorter's, off I went to get here in Tracy, CA. I saw a smoker as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. Place is family owned, and apparently the owners are Raiders fans with all the memorabilia and décor. Nice lady took my order at the register. I ordered a 3 meat combo, which was tri-tip, brisket, and hot link. It also came with 2 small sides (potato salad and red beans/rice). All this came in a to-go box and paired with plastic utensils. Dine-in opted. The meats were wrapped in foil to trap the heat and bbq sauce was already placed onto the meat. I recommend future diners to ask for the sauce on the side. The actual meat itself is not too flavorful, and I felt that it relied on the sauce for flavor. Tri-tip is soft and juicy but not tasty. The hot link was spicy hot. Great one. Red beans and rice was grainy and not fun. Potato salad was unremarkable. The service was nice and it took about 35 minutes to get my food. They take to go orders too. Also, they are next to a bowling alley, don't be surprised if there is bbq sauce on the bowling balls. The taste of Shorter's fell a bit short in terms of the meats without the sauces. However, the warm family vibe that hangs around here is worthy for a guest to at least take peek inside. read more

Considered this place as a potential contender for the dinner to be served at our postponed-now-backyard-wedding. We did not share this information when we ordered our food to-go, so we could get an honest preview of what we would be served at our wedding. Bottom line: it was good food but we were not blown away We got food to-go and tried the following: -chicken: was good, nice smokey flavor -ribs: some pieces were tough and I couldn't get the meat off the rib, because it was tough -pulled pork: good -tri tip: It was tough and dry, so I can see why they added sauce on it. I like mine tender and juicy on its own, but it shouldn't need sauce to make up for the lack of juiciness. -brisket: looked like a hot mess but was ok Sides: -mac n chese: was ok -coleslaw: the color was not vibrant so it did not look fresh. It looked old and did not look appetizing. Tried it none the less. It was too sweet for me. -spicy spaghetti: it has a heat to it for sure but not suitable for children - potato salad: acceptable -garlic fries: Ok this was both of our FAVORITE part of the ENTIRE meal. For two people who are from the southeast and understand BBQ, and how it should taste, we don't give out compliments lightly. This is by far the best BBQ we have ever had in California!! I had the chicken plate and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich. They know how to cook BBQ! The meat was tender with just the right amount of smoke flavor. It was my favorite kind of BBQ sauce, however my husband does not like a sweet sauce, so if you're a more of a vinegar based, spicy sauce person, you may not like it either. I went to shorters for the first time and ordered a 3 way combo dinner with an extra side and cornbread meat tender falling off the bone delicious. So I turned my family on to this place then recently went back a second time to buy food for the family and spent over a hundred dollars and got the shitty end of the stick ribs and tri tip was dry and burnt 3 way meal had way less meat than the last time guy at the register act as if he was slow screwed up the whole order after I ask for 4 extra sides of the same. no people skills at all. Thanks to Dave the owner for fixing the issue regarding the side dishes. My hype is consistency and good customer service. Located right next to west valley bowling alley. From the street you'll see their smokers always on and filled with bbq goodness. We've been deprived of good southern food since moving to california. We've been spoiled from all them southern food while living down south for years. We wanted to try this place out eversince but never really had the opportunity since we're hardly ever around this part of town. Then one day determined to actually go in and try it, they didn't disappoint. We went and ordered their ribs, bbq chicken and links with sides of coleslaw, potato salad and mac n cheese. We also ordered 4 pcs of fried catfish with side of fries to try if this was the real deal, and boy they were. All the foods that we ordered were finger lickin good and worth the price we paid for. Friendly people that works here, the place is not really pleasant when it comes to being squeaky clean, but it just reminded us of bbq places down south that are family owned. Prices are acceptable since their food is worth it. Told them we'll be back for more and we did the very next week. The girl working the register had gloves on and they were black on the palm side, then she went to the back to touch the food- with the same gloves on! there was also a guy that took the garbage out with gloves on and came back in wearing them and went straight to the back where the food was. Food was good, don't get me wrong, but knowing they were touching doors, and registers with the gloves and then touching my food, turned me off and i didn't want to eat it anymore. If I could give it a minus 5 star I would. I have been craving bbq for the longest time and held high hopes that I would come away with a great meal. I so wrong. The red beans and rice had a sprinkling chili powder in it. No salt, nothing. I grew up on red beans and rice and collard greens. There had been boiled, but no added flavors were added. The potato salad was smothered in sweet pickles. The pulled pork had a minuscule amount of bbq sauce on it. The health department should look into the cleanliness of this restaurant. I was corrected by the female that answered the phone that they did not sell slabs of ribs, but racks. Really, talk about customer service. Anyway, I picked up my order and once I got home (which was after they had closed) I reviewed the food in the bag and noticed I got rib tips? I didn't order rib tips...So I made a note to call them in the morning to discuss once they opened. I called around 11:15 in the morning and was told, they would not correct the meal because it was the next day?
