Coffee and breakfast near our hotel in Shoreditch. We noticed this place right away when we came off the train because it has an old marquee sign with funny messaging on it. We decided to have a proper sit down breakfast here before the start of one of our days touring London. Worth it. Service was excellent, the space is fun and the food was outstanding. We got the one-pan eggs and some simple eggs and toast with coffee and a butterfly latte. I didn't love the butterfly latte, but it was beautiful and my spouse was happy enough to finish it off. The one-pan eggs were so rich and delicious and having the extra toast from our other dish was perfect to sop up all the sauce. We saw a lot of people popping in for a coffee to go and grabbing photos which made for fun people watching. read more

Being from Los Angeles, I love me the coffee scene in any way, shape, or form. Is place is in one of the busiest hubs in e city, located right across the underground rail station on Old St, so it's always busy. And loud. It's worth it for all the people watching you get to do and soak up the ambiance of the city, though. The coffee here is freaking amazing. They have all the different offerings a good coffeeshop should have, including Nitro Cold Brew. They're roasting it up right, too, because that ever-sought-out robust coffee flavor is present in all of their drinks. The food is great, as well. It's a modest menu, but hearty and fairly healthy. Their sourdough toast with butter and jam is on the harder side, but still good. And their hot porridge with coconut milk, summer berries, and chia seeds is just what the doctor ordered for a complete healthy breakfast to go with your morning java. They also serve salads, eggs, focaccia, salmon, and plenty of other healthy breakfast items, including cold-pressed juices until 3PM on the weekdays and 5PM on Saturdays, and until closing time on Sundays. Shoreditch Grind is right off of the tube, so many points just for convenience sake. Things we tried between 2 people: - hot porridge (oatmeal) with coconut and fresh berries: warm, yummy, creamy, comforting, fur filling. Happiness in a bowl. -smashed avocado+smoked salmon on toast: pretty solid. Loved the chili slicers. Tasted even better with a crack or black pepper + squeeze of lemon. - banana bread with creme fraiche: liked that the bread was overly sweet. Warm and toasty, topped with honey and creme. -fresh pressed red juice: consisted of apples + beetroot + blackberry + banana: really fresh, but a tad sweet for my liking. My friend also really enjoyed their coffee. We were so stuffed from our quick stop here. A great alternative if you want a delicious breakfast on the go. Would like to come back for more! read more

Loved this place right down the street! From their cocktail sign to their punny saying on the front of their shop, this place is super cute and trendy. They don't have a large variety of menu items, but my friend and I loved our food. I even got a mocha latte since they didn't have vanilla (what???) and it was actually really good. The place was pretty packed but we found a nice place to sit outside on their patio. Everything was trendy and fun. It was a great brunch and I'd definitely go back again whether it's for a meal or a night out! read more

A solid addition to the east London coffee scene with it's bolshy Antipodean staff and home roast Americano. What use to be a tacky mobile phone shop is now a super sleek espresso bar, light and airy with a fabulous view of Silicon Roundabout. The coffee is five stars, dark, rich, bursting with coffee goodness and for £1.70 a cup it's great value for money. The venue with free wifi and loads of bench seating is also fabulous. They need a "push" sign on their front door, it was like The Crystal Maze trying to get in this place. A glass box of coffee goodness that is impenetrable! They take card and have a selection of yummy looking food. I'm looking forward to coming back and having some lunch there. They are doing everything right and I'm super excited about the day I can sample their roast as a filter. Yum! read more

Directly outside of the Old Street tube stop is a wonderful bastion of Shoreditch cool in the form of Shoreditch Grind. The space is a semi-circular bank of windows that looks out into the Old Street roudabout and bathes the space in light. There is often mid- to late-90's hip hop blasting in the place, so if you are looking for a quiet, cozy café - this is not the place for you. They also have pastries and make some tartine-like breakfast plates. I have been here a few times and all the drinks were fantastic. I have had iced coffees as well as espresso. The iced coffee is served in a rocks glass that you would find at a bar. I like that touch. We also got matcha teas, cappucinos as well as veggie juices. They never failed to make a very good drink. read more

An Americano for under £2? Let's get down, let's get down. It's a bit of a scene, and on an extremely busy roundabout/tube station (Old Street), but don't let that stop you from poking your head in. The median age of constituents seems to be about 25...and the acoustics make it seem like there are 100 people in there instead of 25, but none the less...this is Shoreditch and you likely need some caffeine, so get you some. I had planned on maybe staying for a bit but it was just a bit too chaotic, and not many seats (perhaps they have seating upstairs? I am not sure...I didn't venture up the staircase), had we been rocking some more temperate weather, their outside seating is nothing to shake your head at. It's incredible, despite the busy environs...it's an oasis. However, it's officially December so I wasn't expecting patio weather. If you're looking for a bit quieter spot to perch, check out Pitfield a few blocks away. Got my Americano to take away, all staff was nice enough (not overly nice mind you, would you be if you had to take orders over all that noise!?), the music selection solid and the vibe one of happily caffeinated hipsters in the prime of their lives. Also, they serve drinks at night I hear. Will certainly be back for that. I'll make it part of my rotation. Good, strong coffee and a pretty kick ass marquee. read more

I live nearby and would walk by every day thinking, what is this grungy, hipster place, without giving it further thought. As I started to get more into the Grind chain of cafes, I gave this place a try and have been coming back consistently ever since. I like it and it's funky. The only real downside is that it's kind of small and the music is loud on the weekends. Coffee is good. Not out of this world, but they make a good soy latte. Pastries and cakes are yummy and their menu is really good. The green smoothie is really tasty and the cacao pieces are yum! I tried the granola smoothie bowl. I thought it would be like an Acai bowl, which it kinda is, but it's not as good or naturally sweet. It's filling though and a good portion. Always see people ordering eggs, or avocado toast on weekends, which I've never tried here. Definitely worth a visit and it's great for people watching! read more

Keep it up, friends! I had a very tasty latte. I'll be interested in seeing how they do, since it is a great location and a local coffee place was much needed in the area where Starbucks is the only option. They have a variety of good looking paninis, some baked goods, and straight forward coffee drinks of the espresso sort. I forgot to look and see if they did filter as well. It is a cool-looking minimalist space, and as I said before, clutch location. They have some stool bar seats that look out into Old Street circle to sit at, but they aren't terribly comfortable. This is NOT a coffee shop to linger at all afternoon or study... More of a quick sit in or take away only kind of spot. All at pretty affordable prices. A small latte was £2. None of the other reviews mention the booze. Shoreditch Grind is a coffee shop that lets you enliven your experience with spirits. I didn't try the coffee, but I did try the espresso martini, and it was delightful. I don't normally go in for sweet cocktails but this was a nice caffeine-laden pre-dinner drink on a warm afternoon. There is plentiful outdoor space to enjoy your beverage, and interesting graffiti in the restroom if you need entertainment in the loo. read more

During my visit in London, my friend suggested I visit the Silicon Roundabout seeing as I went to university near California's Silicon Valley. I was wandering around until I stumbled upon Shoreditch Grind and remembered it was on a list of top coffee shops to try; so I decided to pop in. I ordered a Mocha and eggs with avocado on sourdough toast. The man who took my order seemed indifferent, so I can't comment on friendly service. There seems to be 4-5 people behind the bar, but 2 pulling shots of espresso. While I was waiting for my order to arrive, a few thing stuck out to me: - Non-working Wi-Fi. - Complaints about the outlets not working, however, I cannot attest to this as I didn't need to charge anything. - Uncomfortable seats along the windows. - Indifferent customer service. I would understand popping in here for a cup of coffee before heading off to work; however, the experience here is nothing spectacular, so it's not somewhere I would go out of my way for. If you are a coffee enthusiast, stop by and try their shots, but otherwise, I'd move along. read more

Very cool place. I had some time to kill before getting on a shuttle to Stansted, so at 7am, my friend and I desperately needed a cup of coffee to get us through the coming hours of Ryanair agony. I had their latte, no complaints. I shared the blueberry muffin, which pleasantly surprised me. Instead of just dried blueberries, it had a gooey center. Clearly fresh baked (and yummy). It's a bit of a hipster magnet, but you won't get any looks for not having a handlebar mustache and claiming a window stool for the better part of a morning. The coffees, while not Fernandez & Wells epic, are damn good. The latte is rich and smooth, and requires just a hint of the demerara sugar sitting in an open cup nearby. The desserts seem to change daily, and while a tad pricey (near £3) I had more than one I'd easily have again, especially the pecan cheesecake. There's one big catch though if you're coming here to work; while the window seats appear to be endowed with plugs aplenty, they're not actually on. So quash any hopes of an extended freelance work day. read more

I've been riding past the Shoreditch Grind for months - it's on my way home from the city and it has always caught my attention. I finally popped in yesterday to grab a coffee and it had me wondering why it had taken me so long to make a visit. I had originally ordered a flat white, but then changed my mind at the last second and ordered the Hot Flat White Russian. (It's pretty common knowledge amongst my friends that I have a loving relationship with spiked coffees - there's always a bottle of Bailey's in my cupboards.) I'm so glad I switched for the boozed filled version of the flat white. It was DELISH. It was just what I needed on a Thursday late afternoon/early evening after a long day at work. Haven't had a regular cup of joe here so I can't really comment on that, but based on their espresso based cocktails, I'm gonna say they're pretty fab. Can't wait to get back there! read more

Great location. (The almost) 180 degrees of windows in the front give great access to the mass amount of people walking past thanks to the busy Old Street roundabout right in front. The staff are nice and even suggested I do a take-out tea vs. stay in since it's bigger but the same price. I usually sit at the counter facing the windows for optimal people watching and reflection (double meaning) staring out into the busy world of London. But, insider tip, the stools can sometimes seems super low, but the post under the seat are really just big screws, so just turn that baby around a few times and the seat moves up or down depending on what you want. Great music that made me wish my iphone was working here in the UK so I could shazam the sh out of the tunes they were playing, and a beautiful leaf in my cappuccino. What a wonderful place on the Old Street round a bout. We got brunch there on a weekday morning and I enjoyed my whole experience. A small place to be sure, but we were seated right away despite the busyness. I got an ice coffee and it was SO GOOD. The first actually good iced coffee I've had since moving to London. So for me, that's worth five stars in itself. The waiter was super kind which was nice. The breakfast food was exactly on point, though my poached eggs may have been a bit over done. I had a week long stay in London and stayed in the Shoreditch neighborhood. Needless to say, I ate here three times for breakfast. I had a cappuccino each time and it was very good. Full of flavor. I had the Full English breakfast twice with scrambled eggs. Everything was delicious. Also had the breakfast burrito, and that was great as well. Fun atmosphere and great service! You know, I don't think I've ever had a bad experience here - and it's definitely somewhere I've been regularly coming for a number of years! Ok so mainly I get takeaway as I'm usually on the go, but the times when I'm in here for meets, to work or people watch have always been quality. Considering it's like a little hut (think ex-cinema) it does the job and must be like a goldmine with all the people who pop here once hopping off the train. Shoreditch Grind is a cool and beautiful creature. It popped up on the dismal and utterly depressing Old Street roundabout while I was away and is like a beacon of light in the area. Sorry, dodgy kebab shops, Linzi has no love for you. It's not me, it's you, you're a 3am mistake that I would never make. I love the wraparound windows and the cinema style signage (displaying 'coffee makes you last longer' cheeky messaging). Inside it's very Shoreditch hip with matching cute baristas. The non-tattooed need not apply. It reminds me of JJ Bean in Vancouver, I'll never truly feel I'm cool enough to be in there. But what I am cool enough to be is gainfully employed and can afford your expensive coffee and gorgeous looking almond croissants. I'll see you in the morning, SG. Make mine a double. read more

Only been here once so far, but I'll definitely be back. Despite a substantial flow of people at this convenient location at 9am on a Thursday, we got our flat whites quickly (+1 star), they were very good (+1 star), the croissants were excellent (+1 star) and served by friendly staff (+1 star), and to cap it off, there was space to quickly down coffee and pastry at a picnic table in the sunshine (for the final star). Another great coffee shop in East London - if I wind up living nearby, this could be my local. Oh, and I saw Buffalo Trace (although no High West) whiskey behind the counter, so it might be worth an evening trip as well. read more

I was in the area and desperately needed a coffee, so I was headed into Starbucks when I peaked around the corner and saw this cute little gem. I jumped at the opportunity to get my caffeine fix at any place other than Starbucks, so I headed in. Nice music in the background, delicious looking pastries, and prices better than the big brother around the corner. I went simple and ordered a small latte. The lady at the counter wasn't the nicest, but I ordered and sat down. They brought my latte to me with some pretty art on top, and I sat there reading while I sipped this delicious treat. Nice espresso, good temperature, no complaints at all. They have splenda! My sugar of choice isn't in many places in London so that was a plus. They have chilled, flavored water for self serve which was great, plus free wi-fi. A win for me! read more

I dropped in to Shoreditch Grind this morning as I was working in the area and had been wanting to try the place out. If I could give the place three-and-a-half stars I would, but as I can't, I'm erring on the side of caution. The interiors and external façade are possibly the best thing about the coffee shop for me. The faux cinema-style signage out front is eye-catching, with the (presumably ever-changing) sub-text below the café's name urging you to "Flick Your Coffee Bean". I'm all for caffeinated innuendo, but this seems a little forced; perhaps a good analogy for the rest of the operation? The problem for me is twofold. The coffee itself is actually rather average when compared to places like Prufrock or Caravan nearby, with predominantly disinterested or too-cool-for-school baristas (some of whom I've seen elsewhere, such as Lantana) serving up lukewarm 6oz cups of mild disappointment. Additionally, whilst the place is cool to look at outside and in, with only a bar around the edge and a single communal table it doesn't really lend itself to being a sit-down-relax-and-exchange-conversation/ideas type of place. Which is what a coffee shop is all about after the quality of the coffee, right? Don't get me wrong, this coffee served from their La Marzocco still beats the hell out of a roasted-to-oblivion EAT or Pret job, but the location and staffing just meant for me that a takeaway seemed the best option. When your immediate opinion of a place is that you want to get out of it soon after arriving, the omens are not the best. I'm still not convinced, but at the same time it's really worth a poke. To be fair also, the prices are pretty damn solid and cheaper than the chains. I sure don't mind the Shoreditch Grind - I just couldn't ever see myself loving it. read more

Great location, lovely place, great coffee. What else? I love this grind. I went there out of curiosity as I used to walk down the place very often but never stopped by. And the least I can say is... I did well finally stopping by, especially on a (very rare) lovely sunny day in London. Perfect spot for a casual meeting. My friend had some tea, I had my classic Iced Coffee of "hot" days. She liked her tea, nothing special. I did really love my coffee. Not the best I had in London for sure, but it was very good and refreshing. We sat at the back terrace, a truly amazing spot for this location. A lovely time, for a very decent price. I was honestly "expecting" it to be more expensive given the location, so the bill was a bit of a surprise. A pleasant one, indeed. If you enjoy the hecticness of Old Street and hang out around Shoreditch, give this grind a try. Good coffee, lovely baristas and waitresses. Actually, very lovely waitresses. I have come to accept that every single coffee place makes drinks differently, despite having the exact same names for things. So I asked the cute kiwi at the counter what her macchiato was all about. The barista says "expresso" when describing the elements of the drink. My expectations plummet. But she didn't make it. And it wasn't bad at all. Not amazing mind you but better than most. Small space but I like the way they've sorted out seating and the food displays. Makes me want to buy everything on that damn counter. There's seating all around the edge and a communal style table a little off center of the room. But doesn't make me want to stay and study or catch up with a friend. Definitely coming back here if in the area and in need of some good quality caffeine. read more

I have a LOVE/hate relationship with this place. Firstly, I love it... I'd argue that they do the best flat whites in London. They are spot on 99% of the time. Their other coffees are great, and the food is genuinely brilliant most of the time. Of course the unique building and great location add to the lovin'. But, I also hate it (a teeny, tiny, small, fraction of a bit); it can get very busy at peak times. Like, "wow, I'll go next to [insert corporate 'coffee' chain] instead" busy. Also, the staff seem to have their on and off days. Most of the time they are very pleasant but other times they seem either like they're on the come-down from hell and give you 'the death stare'.
