This wonderful old-school hardware store is close to my office. I like the fact that it's small and full-service. The owner and his employees are always here to help you. Big box stores leave me basically on my own. Their employees seem to sense when you need help and run away. I'm older and love full-service stores like this that remind me of a different time, before independent hardware outlets started to die off. (Remember full service pharmacies, too?!) Brace yourself for some little points that some may find annoying: the inventory is organized with no rhyme nor reason (that's why it's good to ask). For example, I recently was looking for ant traps. There is a display with mousetraps and traps/repellants for spiders, wasps and roaches. No ants. I turned around and was going for help and there, at the end of an aisle six feet away from the rest of the pest supplies, was a good variety of ant mitigation products (don't buy the little Raid traps, they were useless - I upgraded to a costly, elaborate alternative and it rid us of ants in our summer kitchen.) Finally, the owner has a lot on his plate. He can be abrupt - on the verge of grouchy. But he has a good heart and is never malicious. Just grouchy. The employees can be brief with words and cheerless, but they'll get you what you need and get you on your way rapidly. After all these caveats, a "plus:" they carry many of the latest items - you'll find stuff like the latest laser measuring tool, the hot colors in paint, LED lighting equipment including dimmers, and metric screws, nuts and bolts. I received a flyer in the mail on 3/12/2022 full page offering propane refills $14.99, Two days later 3/14/2022 I went to exchange 2 tanks price was $17.99. I explained the only reason I came was due to price on flyer young clerk kind of laughed and said flyers were printed a long time ago. I will not be going back! read more

I'm in about every other month for projects or the odd item. They've always had whatever I needed, and offered to assist without having to ask. Not sure if I'm in the same store as described by others, but my experience has always been positive. read more

After seeing some other reviews I realize that the owner obviously has some problems. The last time I went to the store he was yelling at a man "get the *expletive* out of my store you *expletive*. " i missed the first part of their interaction but I was shocked that he was screaming like that with me and other people in the store. I immediately turned around and walked out. Today I went back and he was going on and on about what idiots people at other stores are and how there's no English speaking people at Walmart. And "why do I have to be held to a high standard if every place else thinks they're on vacation?!" Just rude, so inappropriate. My family always spoke highly of this place but maybe he just does well with men rather than women. I won't be going back there. read more

This place is a disaster. Horrible service. Very dirty and the owner Joe is arrogant. He was very rude and could care less. Sherwin Williams a few blocks away is the much better place for paint. read more

3 strikes and you're out. I've been trying to support this local business with my various hardware needs over the years. Yesterday was the end of that. Too many times has the owner been rude and dismissive when seeking advice about projects/products. I now believe that he is intentionally trying lose customers based on his lack of common decency. When questioned about the instructions of a product that state "DO NOT USE FOR" and your response is, "Well then don't buy it. What do you want me to do? Go somewhere else", I tend to think you want your business to fail. Customer Service Training 101 may be beneficial. read more

This store had a coupon in the Hartford Courant for screen repair. I spoke to Joe and emailed him pictures of the screens. He assured me the screens could be replaced and he could make a few new frames. The work was done in two days. He asked me to take a few home to see if they worked . The screens fit perfectly, so I picked up the rest of them. Before finding this gem I called every screen repair and no one could make new frames. Very pleased with the work and customer service. If I could have given zero stars I would have. I called on the phone to see if the had a part I needed. The woman that answered sounded as if I woke her out of a nap. I asked if they carried what I needed and she clearly was distracted or didn't bother to listen and asked the owner if they had something completely different. He got on the phone and was extremely rude and was rushing me off the phone. He sounded like an arrogant a-hole! I told him never mind even if he had it I would never give him any business! read more

Went to buy a gallon of paint at3:50 on Sunday. They're supposed to remain open until 4:00. I was told that the registers had been shut down and that was that. 2nd time I've had a bad experience in this store. Once is bad, twice is a trend. Goodbye read more

I ran in there a couple times just because it's close to my home. Their selection is very limited and to be honest, the people I encountered who worked there were not the most knowledgeable. At the same time the prices are right around where they should be but they are a little limited. read more

Once again I'm completely impressed with Shop-Rite Hardware in Wethersfield! Whatever I need, they have it. Odd shaped magnets for a school project? Done. Bucket with holes in the bottom for sifting? They'll personally drill the holes for me. And yesterday I accidentally broke a piece of glass for an odd shaped frame and couldn't find anywhere cheap to replace it. Should have called them first--$10 and it will be waiting for me when I get there. Always so friendly and helpful. I've been in quite a few times and have always left a happy customer. read more

ZERO Dead zero. This is the 'new' True Value. They would not help at ALL. I needed a few electrical items and all he would do is show me the isle with light bulbs. That isn't what I needed. Irony is that there is a sign out front welcoming "Wethersfield True Value customers" You folks need about 3 years of training to even touch the service offered by the old store. Shop Rite Hardware used to be a good store. I assume ownership has changed hands since they no longer have friendly service from a knowledgeable staff. The are expensive also. I prefer to support local business however Home Depot has better prices and marginally better service. read more

I've been in this store multiple times, and every time I have walked out extremely satisfied. When I have a project that I need help with, I always go there, the customer service is amazing. Usually when you go into a store, many employees just point you in the direction of whatever you need, but here, each employee greets you at the door, asks if you need help and takes you directly to what you need and waits there to see if you need any further assistance and is very knowledgable. The owner is always ready on hand to help you with anything you need, especially the real big problems (plumbing) that arise when you're a homeowner. My go to hardware store!! read more
