One of my favorite restaurants in Santa Monica! Everything on the menu is delicious and the service is phenomenal!

Cramped? Yes. Crowded? Sure. Noisy? Most of the time. Still, we discovered Shoop's walking our dogs down the Main street drag and keep returning for its casual no-frills vibe. This definitely feels like a locals kind of place and is far better than much more expensive breakfast places in the area. The straightforward breakfast offerings are solid, but the best things on the menu are the salmon, the sausage and kraut, the warm german potato salad, and the pineapple pancakes. I saw someone give the weisswurst a bad review and was really surprised. From our experience in Germany, it was right on both taste and texture-wise. Guess we remembered it differently. The sausage might receive mixed reviews, but there's no question about the pineapple pancakes. Crispy, fluffy, carmelized - agh! The coffee's good too (surprising for a diner-like place) and they carry a wide variety of German and other European treats like Christmas stollen and black salt licorice. My only small, half-complaint is the service is friendly, but can be kind of scattered. That's not nearly major enough though, to keep me away from my pineapple pancakes! read more

Our Venice-local friend recommended this place for brunch, and we were more than impressed. Street parking in the area, and tables outside for dining. The staff was wonderful, polite and attentive with a great attitude. We ordered the great (as in HUGE) pancakes, and scrambles. All food came out fast and hot, just amazing for a breakfast place. I've lived in LA for 17 years and am baffled as to how I missed this place. Better late than never. I had the savory smoked salmon pancake and OMG!!! The owner is honestly a pancake God. That smoked salmon is the BEST smoked salmon I've ever had. The sauce, the egg, tomato... everything just danced in my mouth. Get into my belly!!! My daughter had the banana pancakes. They were.... bananas!!! I counted 3 bananas get sliced into her pancakes. My son had the gigantic Shoop dog. It was beyond delicious. Homemade real coleslaw. This is real food. Real flavors. This place is absolutely amazing with a Chef that comes out to greet you by first name and a waitress that has your order memorized from months prior. An extensive selection in its attached market and a very walkable location to brunch and peruse the local shops. Best blueberry pancakes in the city! Stopped in this morning to grab a quick bite to go before heading to work. It was my first time stopping in but I had pleasure of meeting Matt "Shoop" the owner who basically treated me as if I was a loyal customer who's been a regular since they opened! He recommended the Danny wrap which was absolutely delicious... he also gave me a huge hunk of smoked salmon to sample and offered cappuccino while I waited for my wrap. There's also a bunch of exotic grocery items in the back... I'm intrigued to try something them and probably will in due time. I had to eat something quick before a meeting and I saw Urth Caffe and thought "Oh perfect!!" So i parked and started toward it but then as I walked up and saw the hordes of basic beach folk spilling out of the double doors, I panicked and backed away. I HAD to eat something and also pee but only had twenty minutes, so I started running toward a small strip mall across the street in hopes there would be something suitable inside for this desperate occasion. At first I couldn't tell what it was or what the name was ("Schmoopies??" -- I need new glasses) but I saw jars of food in the window and thought "Why not try?" The guy at the counter greeted me warmly and i saw they had sandwiches. PERFECT!!! And they were in the $10 range. I had a BLT with avocado and coleslaw. It came out in like three minutes and it was AWESOME. On a soft but crispy French roll with thick cut bacon, ripe tomatoes and heaps of avocado. It was huge, too. Definitely enough for two people. The service was excellent, too. Very smiley and genuine. I can't imagine I would have had even half the experience at Urth Caffe. Unfortunately, this is not a place to go if you have any food allergies. When asked about allergens the waitress had no idea. She tried to get answers and returned to advise us they were not sure and that the kitchen is small so cross contamination is a strong possibility. I appreciate the honesty in that statement and we left based upon it but not knowing what is in the food and nor taking care regarding cross contamination is, in my opinion, not acceptable. Fast service on a weekday early morning for good ol pancakes, eggs and bacon combo. Friendly staff, fun section of European goods to browse through on the other half of the restaurant. The absolute best! It is a very homey cafe with a market inside. Try some of their specialities like the smoked salmon. It is like no other! The wait time was about 30-45 min for our food but they were pretty slammed on a Sunday morning. Great quality, great people. Would return and try some of their other specialities. The food is average at best, we came here for breakfast and the woman who took our order was so rude and not present we didn't even get to put in everything we wanted lol. I love these people. Everyone who works here OR at the Hollywood location (which is being ultra-super-pimp renovated) might have to be included in my will. Sweetest people, stupid-tasty food, and an adjacent import market all-in-one. The west side of the store is like a little Cost-Plus import store that concentrated on all the cool stuff. Gummies, spreads (savory AND sweet), all sorts of mixes in packets (dressings, sauces, etc)., and even hygiene products. I found my favorite Nivea deodorant at Shoop's... And I looked EVERYWHERE online and otherwise. All I needed to do was go to Shoop's, the One-Stop-Euro-Pimp Shop. The east side of Shoop's is the deli. Yes, you can eat at the counter. Yes, you can sit at a table. It's tiny, but charming. A pane of glass separates diners from the turn-n-burn action going on at the griddle, where the cooks churn out one delicious plate of food after another. THE FOOD. Unapologetic, straight-forward "food on a plate." Looks like something your neighbor's mom would bring out. And you know what? That's what I want!!! I don't want squeeze bottles, "foams," or dry ice... I want a sandwich, some soup, and potato salad. That's it. Shoop's cooks Euro Soul Food. "Green Eggs and Ham?" I was really excited about this deli because I found our favorite Calve peanut butter for 2 bucks less than at Bay Cities. I was even more excited to find an assortment of sausages and meats until I looked closer and it was from Mattern Sausage in Orange. Man, I don't need to be buying this from Santa Monica, right? The store is small, but has all the essentials. Attached is a little restaurant area where you can grab breakfast as well. I can only speak for the market section since I didn't sit down for anything on their menu. As far as a market goes, it suffices, but again, because it is small, selection is also limited and oh -- watch out for expiration date -- I saw a bunch of my peanut butter which were to expire this month on the outside shelf but found more inside which had a few months longer shelf-life. read more

I was really disappointed with this place. After all the great reviews, I was really expecting more. I came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I got a wrap with grilled chicken, grilled onions, baked yams, and barbecue sauce. The wrap was ok, but there was way too much sauce on it, and really didn't stand out in any way. Hm... this place is just okay. It's true that there's a decently sized German market, but it was sort of lost on me. Bueno chocolates and Haribo gummies were essentially the biggest pluses. If you're looking for authentic German goods, this is probably the place to be, but I'm not German, so yeah. However, there does seem to be an excellent selection of sausage, and the lady behind the counter was kind enough to offer samples to customers trying to decide which to get. I came to check out the restaurant part of Shoop's. We tried the Ashley wrap (house smoked salmon, avocado, tomato, lettuce, onion, and hot sauce, with a spritz of lemon, in a spinach wrap), body wrap (egg whites, grilled chicken, mozzarella cheese, avocado, and salsa, wrapped in an oversized spinach tortilla), and the weisswurst and kraut platter. I was a big fan of the weisswurst and kraut platter. This might just be what will finally allow me to stick to Atkin's. It comes with one big juicy sausage, copious sauerkraut (looooove sauerkraut), potato salad, and spicy mustard. I like my sauerkraut to be more pickled, but it was delicious nonetheless. I couldn't get enough of the mustard. Will definitely be back to try the frankfurter platter. Pricing isn't too bad either, around $10. However, the wraps were a big disappointment. I was excited to try the Ashley wrap since I love smoked salmon. To my surprise, it was cooked salmon, not smoked. Oh well. But the cardinal sin was... it just tasted really odd, weirdly sweet and spicy. I think it was the house "hot sauce." Normally salmon, avocados, and tomatoes are a winning combo for me, so this was a huge let down. We picked the body wrap as a healthier option, so I wasn't expecting that one to be particularly tasty, and it wasn't. :( Both of the wraps were about $10. Parking here actually isn't terrible, especially in this part of Santa Monica. They have a tiny lot out front, where I actually scored a spot, and also have parking in the giant lot in the back. Great place to find European foodstuffs - especially German, Scandinavian, and a bit of British foods, ingredients, and condiments. This is our one stop shop for Paprika Potato Chips, Marzipan Candies, Fresh Haribo Gummis, and things like Vanilla Sugar, Pudding Powder, etc... During Christmas time - I stock up on German Christmas cookies like chocolate covered Lebkuechen and soft Pfeffernusse. You can also get European advent calendars which you can't find anywhere else. The restaurant side is small, but the food is delicious. It sometimes takes a while for them to make your food, but the quality is great. I've had their open faced Shrimp and also their Smoked Salmon sandwich - so fresh and delicious. read more

This is a great casual spot. They have solid salads and sandwiches and serve breakfast all day. The shop is nice and has a lot of rare european products! I had the Mediterranean omelette and it was awesome. Everything they make is high quality. Love the baguettes! Ambiance is ok... pretty simple. Staff friendly. I was so excited to come here because of fellow Yelper reviews, but I honestly thought the food was just ok. Let's go into the details. I had a salmon but and it waste really dry. The smoked salmon was hot smoked and pretty smokey (I like this), but it was disappointing with the bread and the other ingredients (basic lettuce and tomato). The bacon went to the other half. It was a good idea if you're looking for a quick and cheap meal ($12 for the sandwich), but not my favorite place out there. The other one got the gravlax which was ok too. Drenched in dill mustard sauce which is not my thing, so I only had a bite. The breads kept pulling away from the main dish because they were just not that great. But maybe that's the type of bread served at the origin of Europe where these owners came from? The shop inside is super awesome, let's say that! REAL GERMAN haribo! It's a completely different taste, guys. Trust me. I stocked up on gummy bears in Germany and finding this here again was amazing. What a find! Perfect place for lunch or a mid afternoon snack. Was initially impressed because this restaurant sat us right away and we got the impression that this would be a quick in and out one of place. My boyfriend and I sat after waiting about 5 minutes for a table, and were given water right away. We put in our order right away as well. Our waitress was really friendly, but seemed a bit overloaded with work since she was the only waitress We waited about 45 minutes until we saw our waitress again to refill our water. Also one of our guests found it a bit weird when the tall old gentlemen who is probably the owner punched her on the arm after asking "everything good here?" I guess she didn't respond since he asked the entire Group of 8 and then proceeded to punch her arm as if checking with her as well. Just an all around solid spot. I recently got on their breakfast sandwiches which are solid (though I prefer to have it on sourdough instead because the normal bread to egg/bacon ratio is sometimes too high). Their pancakes are always on point. Haven't had their coffee but I'm a stage 10 coffee snob and if I can't drink it black it's not good coffee... and I'm pretty sure I've never had drip coffee (vs French press) at a breakfast spot that's drinkable without sugar and cream. Smoked Salmon, Lox, Nova, Gravlax... What's the difference? To many people, it all seems the same, but growing up in a family of Deli owners, when I think of smoked salmon, I think of a thick tranche of salmon, brined/marinated, smoked to perfection, presented and eaten the way grilled or roasted salmon would be in any restaurant. And Shoop, if that's really his name, knows the difference and does it well. As I sat and perused the menu, I was torn between the smoked salmon baguette (sounds simple right?), the "lax" (a familiar food served in a very traditional European style here on black bread with mustard sauce), and the weisswurst and eggs. When I saw the smoked salmon and weisswurst land at the next table over, I knew I was on the right track, and one look at the juicy, thick center cut piece of fish solidified my decision. Shoop, as I'm calling him, smokes his own salmon for the restraurant. The smoke flavor is delicate, the texture is moist and delicious, and he finishes it with a sweet marinade that has hints of pepper and other warm European spices. Different from my usual experience, but delicious none the less. The day I was there they were out of baguettes though, so it was served on a brioche bun, which is a bit delicate and sweet for this type of sandwich. All in all it was a good meal. The only flop for me in this entire experience came at the hands of the cook. For some reason they thought I wouldn't notice that my plate was only thin end cuts of the filet, while my neighbor had the center cut. The server rushed the dish back to the kitchen and happily brought me another. She was super attentive, refilling my glass of water and checking in frequently, and made my experience very pleasant. Shoop's seems to be the real deal, and it has the old world charm I remember growing up with as a kid. On top of being a restaurant, they're also a real deli and market too! Body Wrap (4/5) - Egg whites, chicken, mozzarella, and avocado in spinach tortilla. I ordered the salsa on the side. It also came with a small cup of melons, grapes, and pineapple.
