Finally tried Shish. Had it on my list for so long and expectations were high given the great reviews. Overall I would say it missed the mark for me by a little bit. Mostly because my falafel bowl was a little underwhelming. It had 5 balls, which is a good portion and they tasted really good but the sad lettuce/onion/tomato wasn't enough for me. Besides that, it was the rice which was unseasoned but cooked well. The whole bo was $11 or so with tax/tip so it felt a little not worth it. Personally I prefer Naf Naf which has better toppings and is cheaper. All this being said, the fries are really delicious and my boyfriend enjoyed his chicken and hummus. I haven't been here since the Vid struck, but prior to, you'd walk in, order your food at the counter and then someone would bring it to your table. A Grand Avenue staple! Shish just got a makeover and it looks amazing. The decor is fresh, light, and bright. The food is the same: yummy, fresh, and authentic. I usually come for lunch, but this time I came for breakfast. My friend and I got different versions of the same thing, the "Shish Breakfast." Mine was with the delicious gyro meat and hers with the chicken shawarma. Both meats were tender and tasty. The potatoes that came with it are well cooked and seasoned. My only gripe is that the eggs were very soft. For fried eggs, I expected a runny yolk, but mine were so soft the whites weren't even set. I didn't eat the eggs. I've been for lunch many times and can't speak highly enough of their hummus, fries, falafel, and chicken sandwich. If you have dietary restrictions, their menu is labeled well with vegetarian and gluten free options. Definitely worth stopping by! read more

I'm updating my review because so many things have changed. Mostly for the best. I feel like they're making a effort to make it more traditional. They now play very traditional music which is actually really nice. Especially since they modernized the interior. It brings that small cohesive identity back. They also got glass water jugs at the tables which I like very much. They used to have a little water station. They also added a couple sauces at the table. A green one that is tart twist on a classic verde sauce. Also a red sauce which is a less spicy version of your classic red sauce. Kinda like Cholula and Tabasco mixed together. They also had a fun special "Jerusalem style caramelized lamb belly with mint". The server explained it like bacon pieces because it's very fatty. I did not like the lamb belly that much to be honest. To me it tasted like super crispy fat and skin (like overcooked). The flavor was there I just wished it had more tender pieces like bacon would normally have. The relish that came with this dish was 5 stars. For me at least. I thought it was the star of that dish. We also ordered our (my best friend and I) regular dish, chicken curry. It comes with a starter salad. It used to come with a simple Italian dressing which I actually really liked. But it used to have large chunks of onion in it which they don't have as much of now. They did change the dressing though. It looks like orange jelly. It was very bland to the point I don't know how to explain it. I missed the old dressing. The curry itself I feel like had much more traditional developed flavors. The chicken was just as tender as it used to be. But they didn't have as much cauliflower in it which I was sad about. They also had mushrooms in there which they didn't have before. The only complaint I have about the curry was how soupy it was. It used to be much thicker. Though we agreed it might just be the batch. We'll have to see. Then my boyfriend ordered a gyro bowl. It looked killer. And the gyro meat was amazing! It was super moist and tender. He did say he thought it was a bit bland. I think they just added this to the menu. Not sure. I suggest they add that relish type stuff to this to bring more flavor into it! Maybe even some fresh veggies like tomatoes and a little onion! Overall I'm for the changes. I paid online and showed them the charge and they told me it would refund back automatically because they never fulfilled the order. I was never refunded and eventually was put in contact with Beth, the owner, who said she would refund me. I really wanted to like this place, but will probably head to Holy Land next time. While the gyros are huge at Shish, the flavor just paled in comparison. There was a ton of meat, but very few vegetables. Lettuce and tomatoes were lacking as was the sauce. But for .75 extra cents could have had more. Fries were the shoestring sysco esque fries made to look better then they were with some parsley (?) sprinkled on. They were a bit too greasy. My little piece of Pistachio Baklava didn't taste that Pistachio-ish. While the crust was buttery and light, the filling missed the mark. Started with the Shish Maza Mix ($10.95 - A mixed plate of hummus, babaganoush, falafel, feta cheese, tabbouli, tomatoes and olives). An excellent assortment, generously portioned. Tossed in some extra pita bread for $3.00. Added a Gyro Dinner Plate ($14.95 - choice of gyro or chicken shawarma served with a side salad, sauteed vegetables, tzatziki sauce & signature saffron cardamon rice) and a Shish Trio Kebab ($19.95 - one lamb, one beef and one chicken kebab. Served with saffron cardamom rice and sauteed veggies). This was enough for four hungry adults. Splitting the cost between the four of us made it quite a value. The ease of order was a ray of sunshine during the cold and rainy week I tried it. You can even schedule your pickup which is great. So the food. I ordered a trio kabob, a mezze to share and a roasted vegetables bowl. The meats were tender and flavorful. The rice has good flavor as well. Make sure you ask for extra garlic aioli because when paired with any single item or all of them it just lifts the flavors to a whole other level. I like the fact that all the food came in recycled and compostable paperboard. Anything that makes me use less plastic is a plus. The menu clearly identifies gluten free and vegan dishes which I'm sure is a nice touch for people with dietary restrictions. Picking up food there was easy aside from parking, it's better if it's a two person job that way one could drive around the block while the other is picking up the food. Shish is a nice stop for a casual lunch or dessert stop. It's not a huge place and can be really crowded during the lunch rush. The last time I came here I tried their Falafel for the first time and surprisingly I liked it even more than my Chicken Gryo. The dipping sauce was so good! The Gryos are pretty good, can be messy to eat but they pack it full of lettuce, onions, and tomatoes and a tasty sauce. Not the most amazing gyro ever but still very satisying. I've tried their Moussaka before which was just ok, a little on the dry side and not a whole lot of flavor. Moussaka was one of my favorite dishes in Greece so it's hard to find something that will even compare in MN. My family has been long-time patrons of this restaurant. The food is great, we love that it's halal. However we are pretty much done ordering from here. We literally cannot remember the last time we made an order that they didn't mess up. It's just constant, they cannot get an order right. For example my husband ordered a Greek omelet from here on Sunday. He was very hesitant because he hates olives and he suspected they would ignore his request to omit the olives. Sure enough, they left olives in. This kind of thing happens every single time. We've started to wonder if this level of attention is also applied to cleanliness, hygiene, basic food safety. I can't imagine why on earth this issue has persisted for so long at this place. I hope management starts training their staff better. read more

She waited for over an hour while I was served, every other table in the restaurant was served, and at least a dozen take out orders were filled. When my daughter approached a staff member to ask about the status of her order, she was treated rudely. No acknowledgement of the obvious error, no apology, no courtesy or civility. Amazing food! Great service! We got the lamb and beef kabobs, both amazingly tender and flavorful. It comes with a side of butternut squash medley, rice, and the delicious white sauce! Not sure what it is but I ordered more of it! We also got falafels as an app and it was also delicious. Also, the pita chips are yummy which come with the same white sauce as the kebabs. They are crispy with sprinkling of salt. Last we got a choco toffee coffee cake for dessert. It's super rich and sweet but tasted great for washing the garlicy hummus taste from our mouths! This is a tiny hole in the wall that packs quite a huge menu that goes from falafel to kebabs to burgers to a full coffee bar. The minute you walk in you are hit with a deja vu. The simplicity of the set up and the regulars make it understandable. I came for the falafel and that was a very difficult choice seeing the huge menu and resisting the gluttonics (new word) in action as they teased every atom in my taste buds. I am glad to report that my defenses worked this time and I had the falafel sandwich on a Lebanese wrap. It is huge and cut into two. Trust me and ask for half of it to go and you can enjoy it twice. The wrap was filled with enough falafel to guarantee plenty in every bite. In the filling you get a bit of everything that makes this sandwich popular. Hummus spread, tahini dressing, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers to add a crunch to the mix. The surprise is the palatine style pickles. I usually avoid pickles in my sandwiches but after the gave me a sample to taste I asked for extra. This is my one sandwich review.
