Black Sea Doner Sandwich doner = what I called gyro in my review.
    Lindsay F.

Immediately, trying to decide whether I should give four or five stars, but I cannot think of something I don't like about this place! I have been going here since moving back to Minnesota after undergraduate in 2008. I have never had a bad sandwich here. Or bad food in general. The food is plentiful and the fries are actually really really good. They remind me of McDonald's fries. I always get number 15, the lamb and beef gyro with french fries. It comes with tomatoes and onions, and then I ask for extra tzatziki sauce ifI'm getting it to go, otherwise they give you a bottle if you're eating in. I've also had the platters, the falafel and some of my friends have had the chicken platter. All of it was delicious. Wonderful flavors, hot and plentiful, and the meat is so tender with perfect spices. Even the pita bread is nice warm, and it taste fresh. It's not too thick to overwhelm the taste of the meat and it's not too thin so you can still eat it like a pocket sandwich. Honestly, one of the things that I love the most about this restaurant is that it is so consistent with the dishes that it makes. 15 years later, and the meat taste the same as back into the day. The picture I have is for the newer location off of Highway 61 in White Bear. Set me back $9.50. I just had this yesterday, and now that I'm writing the review, I want to eat it again, even though I just finished brunch! And am full!

#30 combo - It was really good as you can see

Love going to this place for lunch. Great service; even better food. I had #30. Love how they cook it up so you get the smells coming off the grill. Portions are large for price paid. Very reasonable lunch/dinner. I should have taken a pic before I ate, but as you can see it was really good.

Sultan Combo for 3 people and a side of fries

Located close to Hamline University on Snelling in St.Paul, Black Sea Restaurant, is well known in the area and been around for many year. The owners appear to no longer be at this location any more since they opened another location in White Bear. It's a small restaurant and parking can be tricky but we found something right out front. It wasn't busy on a Saturday afternoon, thankfully. We walked in and the floor was super sticky. I assumed, maybe, they used some kind of cleaner that did it since the floor actually looked clean. We ordered the Sultan Combo for/3 people which had chicken & beef kebabs, doners w/grilled green peppers, onions, & tomatoes it came with rice with no option to do half rice and half bread. So we ordered fries and bread extra. We also didn't realize we had to order hummus or baba ganoush on the side which we didn't do. They did offer a tzatziki sauce which we had to request since it wasn't serviced with the meal. Over all it was just okay and won't go to this location again. We've come years ago and it was amazing. Perhaps it's the owner's love that made the food amazing but without them here it was very different. We do want to give it another chance at the White Bear location since we like Mediterranean food and we have never been to that location.

No frills, but amazing gyros! Choice of rice or French fries, both were equally as good!

I went to Black Sea Restaurant on a Monday evening with 3 other people. To my knowledge there is no parking lot for this restaurant but luckily there was street parking available! The restaurant is not overly large and if you want to enjoy this food with a big group I recommend doing take out. I ordered the beef and lamb gyro with a side of rice. Two of the other people in my group ordered the same thing with a side of fries and the last person ordered a plate of gyro meat with salad, fries, and pita bread. I am a lover of Mediterranean food and gyros and always opt to order them. This particular gyro was nice and light and I enjoyed the fact that it was not messy, as most gyros can be. I am someone who likes a lot of sauces and flavors on my gyro and this did not have that. There was tzatziki sauce on the table but I needed more! Overall, my experience was good. The employees were nice, I received my food quickly, and the restaurant was clean. However, I felt cramped where we sat and was craving flavor after finishing my meal.

Their online ordering system is super easy to use, and ordering in person is just as smooth. The menu has such a good variety, everything from fresh salads to wraps and kebab plates. Honestly, everything I've tried has been so good. The garlic sauce is a must, it's incredible. My go-to is the shawarma unwrapped because you get a huge portion and can build it exactly how you want. The food is fantastic and the portions are very generous. The space is clean with plenty of seating, and the staff is amazing. They're so friendly and always make sure you have everything you need.

Lebanese food is just one of those foods that we can't live without. So while we were sad when "The Port" closed, we were excited to hear they were opening Beirut Street Food. Today we ordered their Kabob family meal. That comes with a lot of our favorites. The choice of 4 kabobs, we picked chicken and kafta, 2 vegetable kabobs, salad, their delicious lebanese rice, bread and the addictive toum. We added a few grape leaves and extra bread to snack with that toum. Those who know love bread and tourm. Everything was excellent! I have tried multiple times to make kafta at home and it never is as good as they make it. The chicken is always cooked perfectly. A nice char from the grill, and tender and juicy on the inside. The grape leaves a nice balance of sour from the leaves filled with savory rice and meat. So good. The vegetables were grilled perfectly. Not overly grilled, sweet with a little crisp. Everything was just as we remembered. They are now located in a strip mall with plenty of parking and a few seats inside. While the Sultan is not on their menu., they do have lots of other tasty options that we look forward to returning for.One of our favorite places!

With a bit of research online beforehand, I decided to order some of the most common dishes in Uzbeki culture, and ended up getting quite a few dishes so I could try a bit of everything. I enjoyed pretty much all the food that I tried. My favorite dish was the samsa because the beef and lamb were seasoned very well, the puff pastry was crispy, and the sauce added a very flavorful layer of succulence. The mantu also had very seasoned meat and tasted like a bigger version of Chinese soup dumplings. I dipped some of it in the chili pepper flakes that my server gave me and it tasted amazing. The lagman soup was also extremely flavorful. It had a good amount of vegetables and very tender beef and hand pulled noodles in bone broth. I also absolutely loved the plav which had super tender and flavorful beef, and carrots, pilaf rice, and chickpeas that were seasoned very well. The amount of oil in the dish also provided a layer of flavor I believe. My friends ordered the khasip and the kebabs and I tasted some of the meat, which was not as tender but still very flavorful, especially the kebabs. The sausage, which contained minced beef, heart, lungs, and rice, resembled what I had in Northern China when I lived there. The nostalgic factor made me enjoy the sausage a lot as well. After lunch, I went next door to the Samarkand Market, and was pleasantly surprised to find many Russian products including chocolate, kvas, pelmeni, and more. I even spoke to the store owners in Russian and picked up their newspaper. The entire restaurant and market experience made me super happy and I will definitely return.

There was a problem with one of the dishes, so that's why it's only at a 3. My friend and I got the lagman, tandoori bread, assorted shish kebabs , and small plov to share. Overall, the food was flavorful and portions were generous. We really enjoyed the lagman's deep flavor. The bread was just okay, as well as the plov. We got a small size, but it was still pretty big. The assorted shish kebabs came with lula, lamb, and chicken. The lula and lamb were great! However, I took a bite of the chicken skewer and it was cold and ended up being raw. We checked the rest of the chicken kebab and found that while the middle pieces were cooked, then ends weren't. We brought this to the server's attention and he was very apologetic and immediately took it away for us. It was not the server's fault for sure. He informed us that he would let the cooks know and offered some alternatives (1. they remake the chicken skewers, 2. remake the whole dish (and I guess we would still be charged?), or 3. just remove it from our check). We chose the third option. Overall, service was friendly and nice. They were just swamped because there was also a banquet that was going on. I wonder if that also contributed to what happened with our food. While I was disappointed, I am willing to give this another try some time later. I would just be hyperaware of how meats are cooked.
