The Beech Hill Country House Hotel has a rich history. It was constructed in 1739 and originally…read moreserved as the home of Thomas Skipton and his descendants. It was transformed into a 20-room hotel in 1991 by Patsy O'Kane and her brother, Seamus Donnelly. Ten more rooms were added in 2000. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The room we stayed in contained a king bed that seemed 50 percent wider than a standard king. Staff members were friendly and the hotel Ardmore restaurant served excellent food in a fine dining atmosphere. The hotel is located on a quiet road off a major highway on the east side of Derry and contains several acres of trees and walking paths. I highly recommend it.

A few weekends ago I treated my mum and sister to a night away in Derry for both of their…read morebirthdays. I had booked Beech Hill Country House which is a stunning Georgian house, with 30 bedrooms and suites, based at Ardmore Road. I had booked a classic double room for my mum and a superior room (as it included both a king size as well as a single bed) for my sister and I, but on arrival were delighted to receive two superior rooms beside each other with adjoining door! A lovely touch. The rooms were huge, warm and comfortable and we were looking forward to relaxing in them later that evening. (I later found out that each room in the hotel looks different as they have all been individually restored, so different décor, paints, fabrics etc) But before we relaxed in our rooms, it was down to the bar for a few drinks and dinner! It was a cold evening so we parked up right in front of the fire- bliss! In fact, we didn't leave and decided to have our dinner right there. The Beech Hill is famed for its food and a number of people remarked to me that I would enjoy it when I mentioned I was staying there. The next morning we went down for breakfast and were impressed with both the cooked and continental selection- with all three of us having a bit of both! After breakfast, we walked round and explored the grounds. The hotel has different trials, with 32 acres of woodland and gardens. During our walk I was so impressed to learn about the history of the site. In June 1941, the United States constructed a naval base on the Foyle, named 'Base One Europe'. It remained the US Navy's main centre of operations in Europe until June 1944. The Beech Hill Country House Hotel provided the location for one the main accommodation camps and we couldn't believe a hut was still in place. Fascinating! Overall I had a brilliant night, particularly the comfortable rooms and amazing history

The towels are extra long and very fluffy. The bedding was comfortable. The only minor complaint…read moreis that there was no top sheet just the comforter. Per the hotel, the duvet covers are changed every time a new guest comes in. Hmmmmm. As for the breakfast it was adequate. A bit upset that the tomatoes were not grilled. What saved the breakfast was the whiskey that you are supposed to add to your porridge. It made an ordinary porridge an epic experience. Additionally, I wasn't opposed to also adding the whiskey to my coffee with cream. Yum!!! Didn't add the sugar-hahahaha was trying to save save calories so I could keep my svelte figure.

A drink at the lobby bar took a whopping 40 minutes for the bartender to make (the bar was empty). To top it off, THE RESTAURANT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR VEGAN/VEGETARIAN DIET. When we first asked if there were any options for us, the hostess said "nope, sorry." When we asked the waiter, he offered us "vegetable curry", and for dessert he specifically said: "the chocolate cake is vegan." When the curry was brought out, it was just carrots in curry sauce with a side of rice. Acceptable, I guess. When the cake was brought out, they brought us THE WRONG CAKE. The way the waiter made it seem was that the regular chocolate cake would be suitable for Vegans, and never explained that it was a DIFFERENT chocolate cake that we should have gotten. THEY SERVED US FOOD AGAINST OUR DIETARY NEEDS, UNDER THE PREMISE THAT IT WAS SAFE. All the offered was a weak apology...Completely unacceptable experience, save yourself the time and money and stay elsewhere.
