    Thai green curry
    George R.

If we had food police there's solid grounds for arrests here. We got a deal to stay. Post our stay we say it's sure not worth their full price. Our booking didn't include breakfast (£12 pp). We added breakfasts for two days on arrival. We found breakfast grim - £24 wasted - and while the soda bread & potato breads were good quality the cook successfully destroyed them. I assume the bought - in sodas were fried but once cooked they put them into lidded warmers, which steamed the bread; this is criminal, making them truly awful. I've no idea how they went about destroying the potato bread but they sure did. They totally succeeded in ruining the potato bread. Then, you guessed it, they put them into a steaming warmer. I wear glasses and as I lifted the warmer lid my glasses steamed up so I couldn't see briefly. As if this isn't horrendous enough it should trouble NI's Tourist Board as any visitors tasting our wonderful breakfast breads for the first time here will be put off for life with this muck. The porridge is milky runny and insipid. They have a bottle of Bushmills to add whiskey to porridge to taste. The bottle had a trickle in it when I saw it. The sausages, black and white pudding are over cooked to awful. Scrambled eggs tasted poor. The field mushrooms were good but the tomatoes which are meant to be grilled, aren't, instead they are barely cooked, again steamed, lukewarm and tasteless. The coffee from a machine is poor tasting; there's a box of tea bags for guests to self serve (so much for covid) but I'll have my vaccine soon. The mini croissants tasted poor. The breakfast choices are cooked and steamed not for your delight but for the convenience of a lazy cook. We couldn't face another grim breakfast so we asked reception to cancel our day two breakfasts. Dinner on both nights in contrast produced tasty food. I got Thai green curry night one (£16 or £20 if chicken is added). It had canned chickpeas to bulk out the portion. Never had chickpeas in a Thai green curry before, but despite being a westernised cheapened curry it did taste fine. Night 2 mushroom tagliatelle with toasted sourdough (£17 or £21 if chicken is added) but I wasn't served sourdough. My wife had salmon and alleged Dublin Bay prawns. When the waitress came to ask if our meal was ok I asked if my bread was sourdough and pointed out the prawns weren't Dublin bay. The cowards in the kitchen didn't come out to speak to me, instead the waitress confirmed on return they 'ran out' of sourdough (aren't they chefs?) but I wasn't asked by the chef if this was ok it was just imposed as do you rightly. She also said they were Dublin bay prawns. I've been eating these prawns over 50 years. They aren't and I've included a photo. Room and bed cosy but not worth full price charged for a room. Wait staff are friendly and reception staff do their jobs efficiently. We would return if the deal was right but it's not my first, second, or third preference. If we return we know to avoid the breakfast and we know the chef will tell lies as needed.

Very nice, classy hotel in the center of Derry…read more I came on a tour and was offered a class of Prosecco from the check in clerk ( which was an unexpected treat). Our room was air conditioned ( not all in Ireland are) and we were served well by the bartender in the evening and for breakfast. They had a nice selection of breakfast options including salmon and scrambled eggs. Good coffee, fine linens, overall a place I would return to.

The Shipquay is located in a gorgeous Italianate-style-listed heritage building that comprises a wealth of magnificent boutique hotel rooms. Our Superior Double Room had a beautiful and comfortable king-sized bed that was stylish and sophisticated. We enjoyed the amenities, such as the walk-in shower and the castiron tub that my wife and I loved immensely. They had complimentary WiFi and robes and slippers for us to wear in the morning and at night that was quite comfortable. The restaurant on the lobby floor provided us with delicious eats for breakfast and dinner, with refreshing and tasty cocktails, all in a stylish and contemporary interior that was our speed. The hotel is close to everything for site seeing and visiting attractions. There are tons of restaurants and bars within walking distance to enjoy. And if you want to stay indoors for the night, you have the restaurant and bar or speakeasy that's on-site. There are shopping centers everywhere, including one next store if you need to pick up some clothes, souvenirs, or just want to take a gander through. Overall, this is the place to stay when in Derry, and we will do so again upon our next one.

The room we stayed in contained a king bed that seemed 50 percent wider than a standard king. Staff members were friendly and the hotel Ardmore restaurant served excellent food in a fine dining atmosphere. I had booked Beech Hill Country House which is a stunning Georgian house, with 30 bedrooms and suites, based at Ardmore Road. I had booked a classic double room for my mum and a superior room (as it included both a king size as well as a single bed) for my sister and I, but on arrival were delighted to receive two superior rooms beside each other with adjoining door! A lovely touch. The rooms were huge, warm and comfortable and we were looking forward to relaxing in them later that evening. (I later found out that each room in the hotel looks different as they have all been individually restored, so different décor, paints, fabrics etc) But before we relaxed in our rooms, it was down to the bar for a few drinks and dinner! It was a cold evening so we parked up right in front of the fire- bliss! In fact, we didn't leave and decided to have our dinner right there. The Beech Hill is famed for its food and a number of people remarked to me that I would enjoy it when I mentioned I was staying there. The next morning we went down for breakfast and were impressed with both the cooked and continental selection- with all three of us having a bit of both! After breakfast, we walked round and explored the grounds. The hotel has different trials, with 32 acres of woodland and gardens. During our walk I was so impressed to learn about the history of the site. In June 1941, the United States constructed a naval base on the Foyle, named 'Base One Europe'. It remained the US Navy's main centre of operations in Europe until June 1944. The Beech Hill Country House Hotel provided the location for one the main accommodation camps and we couldn't believe a hut was still in place. Fascinating! Overall I had a brilliant night, particularly the comfortable rooms and amazing history
