Abbey advertises itself as the only B&B in the Bogside. That's not quite true, since another small B&B has opened up the street, but it's still a significant distinction for a tourist. Abbey B&B offers completely up-to-date accommodations (and big rooms) just a few steps from the Bogside Artists' murals and the sites of Bloody Sunday in 1972, and only a little bit farther from the old city walls. Those are the main attractions for a visitor to this city, and Seamus was a great source of advice on where to visit, where to eat, where to drink, and where to hear music in the evening. My only complaint is that the WiFi in the Abbey, which worked fine on Windows machines (including the public computer set up on the first floor), refused to communicate with a Linux laptop.

It is a full house with 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed the other with a queen and a single. There is a very large bath tub (big enough for Finn McCool, in the full bath upstairs and a half bath downstairs. A complete kitchen, dining area in the kitchen, & living area. It is historic so watching your head is mandatory in several locations including the stairway and bedrooms. The stove is very old but fun to use. It also heats the water. There is a archeological dig on the property too. Lots to explore right out your door.

Per the hotel, the duvet covers are changed every time a new guest comes in. Hmmmmm. As for the breakfast it was adequate. A bit upset that the tomatoes were not grilled. What saved the breakfast was the whiskey that you are supposed to add to your porridge. It made an ordinary porridge an epic experience. Additionally, I wasn't opposed to also adding the whiskey to my coffee with cream. Yum!!! Didn't add the sugar-hahahaha was trying to save save calories so I could keep my svelte figure.

Beautiful hotel in Northern Ireland…read more My girlfriend and I stayed here for one night while on a CIE bus tour and I could immediately see the differences compared with the hotels we stayed in Ireland compared to Northern Ireland. Elegant long bar with a nice TV. Full bar with a beautiful bookshelf setting against the wall which makes it perfect to snap a photo with the ambiance it creates. I was really taken for a loop when I woke up for breakfast, and they had a bottle of Bushmills Irish Whisky next to the porridge! I did not indulge but how unique and wonderful that they would offer free booze with breakfast as a buffet option. Bushmills Distillery is not too far away so maybe that had something to do with it : ) They had some live music playing adjacent from the bar and the food for dinner was quality. I had the roast beef with two kinds of potatoes. One was reminiscent of potatoes au gratin but was called something else. We liked it so much we jotted down what it was called so we could look up the recipe at another time. Upon a google search here is a description of the potato side dish (It's hard to think of a side-dish more luxurious than gratin dauphinois. Not much more than thinly sliced potatoes layered with butter and cream, it's soft and luscious on the inside, with a gorgeously browned ("gratinée") crusty top that adds fabulous texture. There are also many historical sites near by which you can take a tour with a tour guide for a very small nominal fee. Highly recommend. As always people SYOY!!!!

Gerry is a wonderful host and having lived in Derry all his life has excellent information on Whit to see and do. His recommendations were spot on. Anyone visiting Derry and missing the Bogside Murals is missing a piece of History. The BnB is located within easy waling distance to everything. Only draw back is the lack of parking.
