    Shinola in Midtown interior
    Amanda L.

Came to Shinola in the Cass Corridor region for their 10 year anniversary sale, and even with the sale, I can afford little to nothing here! But I still love coming here to window shop as everything is beautiful arranged and all of Shinola's products are so wonderful! The staff are always so welcoming and helpful when you come in. It gives the vibes of they might make commission off your sale, but they aren't trying to jump down your throats the way normal salesmen are, so I really appreciate that! My fondest memory at this Shinola is when I came here a couple years back because I have a leather Shinola dog collar that was a little too big for my dog's neck. I really loved the size of the collar still though, so came in to this Shinola and asked them to punch a few more holes into the leather for me so I had more options to cinch the collar tighter and fit my dog's neck better. They did it happily and also educated me on how best to take care of the leather as well - again, so helpful! Absolutely love it here!

I know you pay for quality and service. I know there are high end stores if you have to ask the price, you can't afford. This place is one of those. But it is based in the truly working class city. It would be great if they at least had some items for the working class. They sell beautiful items you will have for life and even will to someone. Watches that you will make your only one. Bags and purses that show both good taste and you made it. Bikes you will enjoy but never leave outside even with their bike locks. Theses are just a few of their specialties. I did get probably the cheapest thing in the store besides the coffee. It is a small wallet that you can hook to a belt loop so you can carry a card or two, coins, and bills. Useful for when I go to museums and don't want to take the time to dig out my wallet from my purse. Service is wonderful but that doesn't bring in the numbers of customers that are needed to operate in the long term.

Have you visited the coffee shop in the basement of Shinola yet? It's time if you haven't yet. My plain latte was delicious--excellent beans used to make this cup of heaven. My husband's chai tea latte was exceptionally yummy, with the perfect amount of sweetness and spice. The ambience is swanky and hip, yet comfy and inviting. There is ample seating in the form of couches, chairs and tables. Music plays in the background. Bare stone and brick walls with sections of black painted concrete look fabulous with the green-tiled backsplash behind the counter, which is showcased at one end. Head downstairs and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, or grab one to go. Enjoy!

They don't just sell polish here. They have tons of Leather goods, watches and so much more. Stopped to get a watch battery replaced. The technician is in from Tuesday through Saturday until 5:30 PM. The staff there so they could take a couple hours to get the battery replaced, it's all depending on how many people are in line to get the batteries. I think it's finally time to get the battery replaced on the Shinola Argonite watch that went out during the first month of the pandemic last year. Wait today is about 15 minutes to get the watch battery replaced. The first watch replacement battery is free. The battery replacement is $25 for each visit. They will send an email when the watch is done. Got an email about half hour later. Always a fun store to browse and see all of the fantastic leather goods here. Service was quick and easy.

Pretty pretty things! Beautiful space, helpful sales people. Watches, gold and silver jewelry. There is also down the street a "home" store with furniture. You can buy a watch or make your own. Another place to "treat yourself" on this street!

I celebrated my birthday this week and my BFF sent me the perfect gift... a monogrammed leather journal cover and ruled notebook from Shinola. The back story on Shinola is that I'm originally from Detroit and on a recent trip, I went into the store with my friend... I loved everything about it but didn't make any purchases. I think she must have seen me eyeing the leather notebooks though, so how thoughtful that she sent this to me for my birthday! Shinola is known for their beautiful products and the fact that they have a skilled manufacturing staff, all in the US, primarily in Detroit. They make watches, bicycles, leather goods, jewelry, and so much more and everything is of the highest quality and built to last. The store itself is also gorgeous... It's an experience to walk-in. They have a ton of very attentive staff working at any given time, and they have a small cafe inside the store as well. I'm a huge fan of this brand and will carry my new journal around with pride. Looking forward to supporting Shinola for years to come!

Another favorite stop in Detroit was Shinola! Stepping into the storefront was like a dream. ⁣ ⁣ "At Shinola, our mission is pretty simple. We don't compromise on quality. From luxury timepieces to premium leather goods, to jewelry to audio, our products are a testament to our unwavering commitment to thoughtful design and lasting craftsmanship."⁣ ⁣ These words can be found on their website, and it truly shows in the way the shop is run! From kind employees to stunning displays, Shinola was such a treat to visit.

If you've ever paged through a GQ, Details, Esquire, Vanity Fair or any proper magazine. You've seen a picture on how nice their time pieces are. Representing Detroit in all of its Renaissance powers. This is one of the designer brand powerhouses that's helping Detroit stand the eff up. If you haven't been properly introduced to the brand, they started with fancy cruiser fixie bicycles. Only recently they took a crack at the time piece game and they struck big time success. It shares the same money pie chart with the likes of Bulova and Movado. They've truly pioneered the true Americana style and beauty. Come pay this shop a visit. You'll have a nice time here I guarantee it. There are lots of things to see, lots of things to buy as well. There's a coffee shop inside as well. So if one of your friends gets bored from all the warranty talks, they can sip and tap away on their smart phones screen. I love this shop, services is really nice, the associates are very attentive, and never have I ever had a bad experience. Thank you Shinola, I'll see you soon my friend.

Oh my Goodness my experience today was outstanding! I took my new watch in for a fitting and one for a battery replacement. This is my first visit to the Detroit location and I was treated like a family member! Well an important one at that! The gentleman who greeted me was friendly. The ladies who helped with my watch fitting was charming as well as her co-worker who was helping other customers. I feel special!

Shinola is...weird. Not in a bad way, but it's like..."What are you?". I haven't figured out if this store is having an existential crisis or if it is just post modern (probably the latter because it sounds cooler and more sure of itself). It's a hipster manifested as a store: You have bikes. You have coffee. You have a flower shop. You have jewelry. You have fine leather goods. It's like a pricey grocery store for sexy people who survive off coffee and good smells. However, I like Shinola. I walked in and instantly did not feel like I had enough money and was not cool enough to be there. However, I thrive under those conditions. It's like getting invited to spend the night or hang out with a cool kid in school: You feel honored and not good enough, but you're also like "Well, I am here; fake it till you make it." Despite my own self-esteem crisis, Shinola has some very cool features. All of the goods, right down to the coffee, are high quality, carefully made, and beautiful. Owning a Shinola piece, even touching one, feels automatically special. I picked up a few purses and their journals and felt luxurious just holding them. The only thing I ended up buying was a coffee. A piece from Shinola is an investment that, as a non-Detroiter or Michiganer, I was not ready to make. I think if I was a local, this would be a must have as it carries a sense of local pride. Another thing that was really impressive is how diverse and polite/attentive the staff was. I like what Shinola is putting out there. Hand-made and high quality is always cool in my book.

So I was back in the D visiting my folks, catching up with friends and fixing my Coney withdrawals lol. In the process, I noticed that there are Shinola clocks planted around the city. Which I thought was pretty cool, so much that we decided to check out the store. Open layout with wood everywhere gives it a warm feel. What makes this store innovative is that all the watches are out for you to see, touch & hold. The variety is nice if you decide to bespoke a watch you can make it all your own. My only real hangup with Shinola is the price point $550 to about $2400 and that's just the watches. "Built in Detroit by Detroiters" yet most inner city Detroiters would probably explore other options when we hear the base price lol. Well... business is business and in retail things tend to have a 500% mark up as one wise man said: "It is what it is". All in all, I feel Shinola is a nice light on our city that usually gets thrown a lot of shade.

I told Rasty on the phone my exact size, 48 when I ordered it. He said sizing was true. Coat measures 52" across the arm pits, so it's a size 50 - 51. I liked it at first, but it gets way too floppy with its straight cut. The next size down would have been fine. Monkey trap pockets. Put your hand in and you can't get it out. You have to hold on to the bottom hem and pull your hand out. Pockets measure 5.5" across, flaps 7". You struggle to get a wallet in and out of the pocket. Rasty says it's to prevent sagging and that Reed has made the coat that way forever. Maybe the leather stretches. Still, this is silly. A car coat like this is not a fashion statement. You need to be able to put things in your pocket. Bent button. One of the buttons was hard to open and close. Really hard. I figured it was a break in problem. When it did not break in, I looked closely and the button stem was bent. It came that way. Rasty said he'd send another button. I reminded him. He never did. No answer. I wanted to exchange it, even for a price, but by the time I got around to it, I was two weeks beyond the 30 day return policy. Also, I had worn it a half dozen times and it was not "new". I was told I would have to pay an "80% restocking fee", a $480.00 loss. I was told the pockets could not be redone. There was something about recutting the coat, but I would have had to visit Detroit, 800 miles away, or a store in another city and I just don't have the time. Reed would not offer me a slightly better deal on a return and replacement. The coat could pass for new, even if it's not, but they would still only credit me $120.00. Disappointed. Could have been a great experience.

The sales lady was extremely nice and helpful and they have a great selection of leather items. Some are made right there in the factory and others are imported. The price they quote you may be higher than online but they will honor the lower price.

Tandy came up often, and lucky for us, there's one in Livonia. We began by conveniently purchasing a bag of scrap leather and other necessities at Tandy. One we mastered our designs using scrap leather, we went back for larger, more expensive cuts of leather. The employees were really helpful about what thickness leather would work best for us and never once judged our lack of skill. They did quite the opposite! Advice was given any time we asked, which was welcomed for a couple newbies. We've visited several times now. After comparing prices between Tandy and Amazon, I've determined Tandy is competitive. Some accessories can be found cheaper online, but for leather, we love having a local affordable option. If you're looking for a fun craft to do with your kids or scout troops, you'll find a lot of kits with detailed instructions that anyone can follow. Once my business takes off, I'll begin buying from actual tanneries. In the meantime, Tandy is an excellent source for beginners and intermediate leather crafters alike. The worker, Terry, asked what was wrong. I showed him the area on my planner that was peeling (which was a small area), but he kept cutting me off asking, "Where-- Where is it? I can't even see it" many times as I was trying to point out the area to him. He then said, "That is such a small area of leather, and there is nothing we can do." Without even allowing me to ask any questions or speak. He just kept cutting me off. I then finally got a word in edgewise and asked if there was a professional leather artisan in store who might be able to repair, and he said, "No we don't do any custom work at all," which didn't really address my question. I asked again, specifying REPAIR, and he said, "No we don't do that." And he did not offer any products they sell to repair it at home, basically expecting me to leave. So then I had to pull him aside again and ask, "Are there any leather glues that I can buy to fix this?" He took me to the product section and pointed out the small Tandy Eco-Flo All In One bottle. I was trying to ask him if that glue would be safe to use on the type of leather of my planner, and he cut me off before I could even say what the leather was, saying, "I'm only recommending this due to the tiny area of issue," and then he walked away. Unhappy with how I was treated, I was waiting to speak with another worker, and it looked like there were only two people working. I took a little bit of time to browse (I had driven forty minutes to get there and was not about to leave), I heard some loud speaking from the cashier's area, where another woman was telling the same worker Terry to "not talk to [her rudely] like that" because she is a seamstress who knows how to work with leather. This gave me the slight indication that maybe Terry is a misogynist. After a while of not being able to find someone to help, I just decided to go checkout, and I prayed I wouldn't have Terry as my cashier. Thankfully I didn't, and I was about to checkout, but I asked the other worker (I cannot remember his name, but he is the manager) about the product, and he stopped me from purchasing the product because it would not help repair my leather planner and instead recommending me to a couple cobblers in the surrounding area. I thanked him for the information, and I also notified him of Terry's actions, in which he said that he will "have a talk with him." Meanwhile, Terry was listening to everything what the manager was saying about how the glue wouldn't be helpful, and he chimed in saying, "Oh wow yeah I would have never thought of that!" enthusiastically, no doubt, to the manager. I turned to Terry saying the product he recommended was completely wrong. I then left. Very unhappy at how I was treated in this store and will take my leather business elsewhere. I cannot believe they employ such a rude man who did not want to look at my problem, kept shouting at me without even letting me talk, and gave me wrong information about leather. The manager was nice and knowledgeable. I say this warning for those of you who are novices with leather information, DO NOT SPEAK WITH TERRY.
