I was very disappointed during my last visit to DSW Shoes in Southfield. I hadn't been there in quite some time and their policies have changed for the worst. I came in looking to grab one of their big tote bags to carry the shoes that I was going to purchase. No more tote bags. I found a display of Oofoos slides, which I wanted to buy for my husband. The Oofoos aren't in boxes. They're just on a plastic hanger and are unattached, so they were falling all over the place as I tried to carry them. Then I found a pair of sandals to purchase, so I was balancing one big box with the Oofoos slipping and sliding on top. I got to the checkout register, and asked the young lady what happened to their tote bags. She said oh they are all over the store and pointed to a bag with a price tag on it. I said no I mean the big bags that are for carrying the shoes that you're going to purchase. Oh, they don't have those anymore, you have to buy a bag (much smaller, by the way). I told her I'd been struggling to carry shoeboxes and the loose Oofoos for half an hour. Then she told me that they don't have any bags to carry your purchases out of the store. I said, you mean the customer is just supposed to walk out with boxes of shoes? Yes. Why? She then mumbled, we're being sustainable. I just looked at her and said, that's not being sustainable, what it is is bad customer service. I can understand the tote bags, they were expensive and there was probably a lot of theft. But to not even offer a bag after purchase to carry your shoeboxes to the car, that's ridiculous. DSW can offer big paper bags that are recyclable, as many stores are doing. People buy multiple boxes of shoes at DSW and they're not easy to carry. I'm assuming this is policy at all of the DSW's. I have no complaint about their selection of shoes (okay, it would be nice if they could carry some wide widths), but this is a big decline in customer service. read more

Went in to get a good walking sneaker for an upcoming trip. Good selection - I wear a size 10 and a lot of the time often that limits my choices. and the place was pretty well organized for a Saturday afternoon. The checkout process was fairly slow. Kinda ticked about my DSW member coupon. I presented it and she scanned it and just said, "Nope!" No explanation, and even worse, SHE THEN TORE IT INTO FOUR PIECES! I'm wasn't going to go all "Karen" about not being able to use it on the pair I bought today, but I was planning to come back after my trip (ending on 3/31) because I was pressed for time today and just had time to get the pair I needed for Monday. The coupon didn't expire until April 9 - more than two weeks from today - but I definitely can't use it on anything now. read more

Just wanted to note that I really appreciate DSW for reopening and also for the measures that they are taking to provide a clean and efficient shopping experience during this Covid crisis. The employees have created lanes and clear markings for patrons to follow. The store is fully stocked with lots of styles to choose from. This store is as ghetto as you can get. On my last order, I had it delivered to this store. When I arrived to get it, the cashier was rude and texting in her phone. When I got home I checked my order, and she should have given me TWO pairs of shoes. I called the next morning and spoke to the store manager who informed me that my other shoes were delivered BUT SHE COULDN'T FIND THEM! Some EMPLOYEE took my shoes out of my order! I was pissed. The location was staffed decently, and the line to wait wasn't long. The store looked very disorganized, and it seemed that they were out of many items, so it was difficult to shop. I had to settle on my 2nd and third choice of shoes because I needed them this the weekend for an event. There was no stock of basic items like leather shoe protector, so I asked for some, and she did bring some out, so that was nice. The variety of shoes and accessories in this place is kind of sick! It's almost overwhelming! If you come in looking for a particular style you will most likely find exactly what you have in mind and if you don't find what you're looking for you will probably leave with something anyway. Despite the 100s of shoes on display and stored in boxes, I like that they maintain spaciousness. It's so important not to feel cramped while shoe shopping! Sometime the lines do get a little dreadful, but an upside why I keep spending here is the rewards program. I was treated horribly at the DSW in Southfield. I have Parkinson's disease. I shake and slur my words sometimes. I wish I would've got this employee's name. She's black about 25 and heavyset I asked to use the restroom and she replied, I guess I'm gonna have to let you. There is a huge sign in the back of the store saying restrooms. Then she yelled at me, accusing me of trying to take a box into the restroom. I was never even close to the restroom when I had the box in my hand. In fact, I asked her where I could put it so that when I came out , it would be there. She replied, with I've got too much to do to worry about your box of shoes. Didn't matter what I said or did she give me dirty looks and treated me like a second class citizen when checking out shoes told me I'd have to wait for the next cashier. I love this DSW Store. The employees are super friendly and always accommodating me when I'm using my coupons. The store is very well organized and never gets too busy imo. The lines move quickly too. I don't think that I've ever had to wait in line for a considerable amount of time, and trust me I hate waiting. I think they have a great selection of shoes at this DSW. I love shoes. I need shoes. I want shoes. Can't get enough of shoes. This location is nearest to my house so I'm here quite often. They regularly send out coupons which I feel compelled to use. Sigh! When I first arrive at the store, I make a beeline to the discount section located in the back. Afterwards, I start at the first aisle and walk each one as not to miss any shoes. I felt like I died & went to shoe heaven! *My friend should have never told me about DSW* They have rows & rows of shoes, boots & heels. My only issue comes to size selection & I love the the website more so than the store for shopping. They carry a variety of name brand & stylish shoes for women. They get you with the rewards card (I haven't gotten on that band wagon). It's right next to Meijer so technically you would have an excuse to come home with shoes after grocery shopping for the family since it is sooooo close. Girls just want to have shoes. I am a girl, and I confess to my shoe love despite having a limited budget and closet for such things. That said, DSW has never enamoured me by the mere sake of its existence and claim to sell awesome designer shoes around the board. I've heard of Zappos. I've seen the sales at Macy's. I go to Nordstrom Rack. Its competitors got the initial flush of awe and desire accompanying being surrounded in shoes. Prices here are usually better than unmodified, regular prices in the mall and department stores. Your mileage may vary on differing styles, though, so I make it a rule of thumb to try and check everything against the Zappos bible and Amazon.com or Google Shopping. Sometimes those darling Guess boots are $20-40 cheaper, and sometimes not. I watch some women in here enter a rapture better deserved for the bedroom, but I am not one of them. I usually head straight back towards the sale rack to see what offerings are cast up from the storeroom's depths, and not once in my life has DSW offered me anything worthwhile. I don't have a very strange size. I have a liking for many of the shoes they sell. The cute things never get to the sales rack, or when they occasionally do, the discount is almost laughable. Right, 30% off $200 is still awfully expensive. Particularly when that shoe is going to be $120 at Nordstrom Rack, or even cheaper for me online. I've used the experience to try things on, but almost never to buy. On the other hand, they do carry Hue hosiery. Again, though, the Rack beats them on price every time. I have a habit of running tights; they don't last past a year or two with me, so I'm not putting $20 into something I know circumstance will destroy. All the gushing love for DSW is lost on me. I'm a child and creature of variety. I enjoy being surrounded by shoes, but so rarely they have anything worth me dropping money on. The one pair of size 10s evaporates when it comes off the truck and the inevitable search for something in my size, meeting my tastes, and serving a need my shoe closet has (other than more shoes) is utterly rare. I like coming to this location whenever I am not in the mood to deal with the mall crowds. The prices are usually discounted 25% or so off of the original price. Don't come here expecting to have full service and help. The staff here is usually at the register or stocking shoes. They also have a large clearance selection, with the shoes being marked down even lower than usual...of course these shoes aren't as fashionable as the rest. read more
