Last summer, my now-fiance and I were looking around to purchase an engagement ring for myself. We went to Brilliant Earth, in Birmingham, which had a lot of nice rings; however, when I emailed them follow-up questions, they didn't respond for over a week (apparently my email ended up in the sales lady's spam inbox ...). During that time, I found Metals in Time online, and stopped by the showroom. I worked with Emma to choose a ring for myself and also a middle stone. Sergio, the owner, was very helpful as well, and had me try on multiple rings. The one I liked was shaped differently then I preferred, so he customized the ring for me. For a 1-kt. (lab diamond) ring plus the matching wedding band, he offered us a very reasonable price. We liked Metals in Time so much that we had my fiance's custom wedding ring designed there too. He thought he wanted white gold, until he tried on a platinum ring and preferred the heaviness of that one more. He wanted a ring with lab diamonds and lab emeralds, and he brought Sergio a picture of a similar one online he liked. Sergio was able to design it to his specifications, and gave me a pretty good price on it, as well; I know platinum rings can sometimes be expensive. The best part is that Metals in Time is always reachable via text - we go in every six months to get our rings cleaned, as part of their warranty (the smaller stones are under warranty, as long as you stop by every six months), and I always text beforehand to ensure that the store will be open. Let me start out by saying, Segio and Sarah helped me (in my 10 visits in order to decide on the perfect ring) make my proposal a success! From the very beginning, I knew I had finally walked into the right jewelry store as soon as I was greeted when I walked in. My clueless, confused, unsure, nervous self immediately felt comfortable after I started explaining why I was coming in. Sarah and others helped my through my many different visits trying to decide on the perfect ring. The journey began in December and they were patient and stuck with me through March when I finally gave the approval to create the design and pick it up. Everything about the process was incredible. Sarah was very helpful in bring out many different ring options that helped me understand the band style, diamond clarity and size, and cushion for the diamond. I brought in what I thought that my soon to be fiance wanted, and they paired up all of the things that I wanted into one fantastic ring! They were able to fit it in my price range as well. They offer a great deal on sizing changes, in case you aren't able to guestimate a proper size for a ring. And, which I think is incredible, they offer diamond swap outs for your ring if the person you present it to wants some bigger, clearer, smaller, whatever! This is where we will do our jewelry purchases from now on and I wish I could give a higher rating but I can't. 5 stars is the max. As I am writing this, they are in the process of moving store locations down the street but are still staying on Main Street. TLDR: Will tell you that they can deliver what you want to reel you in and then their fun begins, disrespectful customer service once deposits in hand, delivered wrong sized ring after asking multiple times for a size 5.5. I bought a Verragio ring from this retailer in 2021 with no issues, unfortunately my engagement didn't work out so I came back to get trade in value toward another Verragio Ring in 2022. Sergio, the store owner made me a decent trade in deal after I saw a ring in the showcase that matched what I was looking for. I asked for a size 5.5 and he said that can be done. After he inspected the ring, he mentioned that he'd have to call a Verragio associate to see if they have one on hand but will put a August 10-14th date tentative based on when he should be soonest able to receive it from Verragio. He also told me he'd get back with an update within a couple hours. I left my old Verragio ring (valued ~5k) with all paperwork and original box with him and left with a receipt around 2PM. Not receiving a call back, I called the store around 4PM, to which they said that a Verragio associate did not pick up and they'll update me when they receive one back. Sergio called me back a little after store hours around 5:15PM. He said Verragio did not have one, but they can alter the one in store to fit my request and will call me on the weekend (it was Monday, June 27). The weekend passed by with no call. I called on the next Tuesday (July 5th) to get an update and another associate relayed Sergio's message to me saying "he already talked to you and he's working on it", which essentially gives no indication on the status of the ring... seeing no word back still, I call on Thursday because I have a hard deadline on August 14th to receive and no real update on a certain date that it can be delivered, and the first words I hear from Sergio are "why are you calling me 3 times, I told you I'm working on it and it'll be done between the 10-14th." First, he had told me he'd call me back on the weekend when we last spoke. No call. Second, he had said receiving from Verragio would be 10-14th, no indication that his store piece situation would be in the same boat (in fact the opposite since he said he'd call me back that weekend). Regardless, I can't remember the last time it was a crime to call and check up on something you're paying for and get a response with so much attitude. He did ultimately deliver the piece on time but was missing an original Verragio box and authenticity card (expected because I dropped off these items with my original trade in). I had asked a store associate about the box and card when I went to pick up a diamond report and they said they would ask Verragio. Again they did not call back. So I reached out to Verragio directly and got an upset email back from Sergio for reaching out to Verragio directly. Sorry I didn't wanna keep bothering an unreponsive and rude store lol? When my fiancé finally received her ring it did not fit. When we took it to a local Verragio retailer near her (in Philadelphia), they said it was somewhere between a 5 and a 5.5 and not truly a 5.5. Early April 2021, my husband was visiting one of his favorite Cigar establishments located near Metals in Time when he heard that the jeweler's business may have been slow. He in good faith he thought he would help them out by making a small purchase. He purchased a watch that was discounted by $500 and was told that if I did not like the watch it can be returned "sure if your wife doesn't like it you can bring it back". I didn't care for the watch and asked that he take it back. While he was placing the watch back into the bag he noticed that he was charged the full approx. $875 rather than the $375 that he was quoted. Coincidentally, when he called the store the sales immediately said "I overcharged you and I will credit you the $500". He let her know that I did not care for the watch and he would be returning it that same week. When my husband arrived at the store the sales person took the watch from him and said she was unable to operate the credit feature and she would have the owner credit him the following Tuesday. She made a small note on his receipt and sent him out of the store. He mentioned it seemed a little odd that the simplest task could not be managed by an associate and seemed a bit shady. Ten days have past and no credit yet and no return calls to the multiple voicemail messages we have left. We have reported this event to the credit card company. We have also done some investigation on the business and associated businesses and we definitely were not impressed by what we have learned of their business ethics. Consumers, especially those who purchase DIAMONDS are much more savvy then in the past; therefore I doubt this business will retain a good customer base. I have a very rare, very old Omega that needed a fix and even the Omega store at Somerset didn't want to touch (would've had to been sent to Switzerland and cost an arm and a leg). UPDATE: The bank refunded my money and after a year..Sergio called and said I could have them for the agreed price. I went there and picked up my dad's cufflinks and they were returned to me tarnished. I couldn't just pick them up before a lecture on why I should have paid him another $300..not $200 as he says he lost it because he had it lasered which cost him extra... The problem? He only turned a father's cufflinks into a ring and necklace for one other person and who recommended him to me..Sergio said he remembered doing her dads when he quoted me $500 . She sent me a photograph of hers..which was also lasered. He did nothing different than what was quoted. She paid what I did. What was done: A set of cufflinks. One soldered on a ring. The other, a flat piece of metal. Chain included. $125/piece. If I did not get my money from the bank...I believe he would still have them until I paid an extra $300.To throw them away would be total loss of income. Buyers beware: 1. Keep your receipts and make sure the receipt is clear. 2. If you paid in full..have your receipt state it like I did. This is really important. If you pay it off..have it read paid in full. 3. If he does any additional work. Get a written receipt if you authorized it. I am the 3rd person I know of that was asked to pay more on pickup. 4. Pay with a credit card because your card comes with its own insurance. Since I wasn't allowed to pick up my items..I never received them and the charge back authorized. Timeline: 4 sets of my father's cufflinks whom had died made into jewelry. One for each granddaughter and one for my mom. Paid in full the day I ordered. Have a paid in full receipt. The day before I picked up received a call that Sergio wanted more money for work I never authorized. $200??!! He let me have one set because the next day was my daughters birthday but kept the rest until I paid for the work( not authorized ) He ignored my paid in full receipt .At that pickup..he presented me with a new receipt and gave it to me with a new balance timed 3 hrs before I was in the store. When I wouldn't pay..he kept the other 3 sets, called me a name and told me to leave and not come back. I then did a charge back,however, he gave the bogus receipt to the credit card company and told them I said he could do extra work. Now I had to send in my original receipt with my timed charge receipt/paid in full and my phone records with no calls to or from them (except for call to pick up) to get my money back. Also received responses in this forum that his store was a front, another was sold a fake watch which he learned when he took it more locally to fix, another he was charged more on pickup as well and another that they have been in Oakland Co court many times.I counted 6 as defendants in civil. This was hell. Even had a former county official go in on my behalf as he was on a committee with me and the woman who had her cufflinks done and saw they were the same. He said he would never buy anything there and would pass on to Birmingham/ Bloomfield friends..he also drafted an affadavit for the attorney generals office..notorized. Love this jeweler! I first went in there after shopping probably over 20 (yes 20!) places for an emerald and diamond ring for my mother. They were extremely helpful and helped educate me on a few options. I had a limited budget and they helped work to give me such an amazing piece. It's seriously amazing and my mother cried it was so beautiful. Second was a ring for myself. This one is a pure stunner as well. I went in here briefly back in 2016 and the visit was decent enough, met Sergio for a short bit. An ex bought an eternity band and went cheap on the setting, which caused my adjoining fingers to get all cut up and calloused whenever I wore it. My ex was a cheap man and even if he were advised, which I imagine he would have been told it wasn't the ideal setting for the eternity band for comfort, his frugalness wouldn't allow it. Thankfully the cheap ex has been rightly kicked to the curb. That dagger like ring as such sat in a box for the last year or so. I ended up taking the ring back to have it properly reset and put into a channel setting, which would sit on my finger much more comfortably. Yes a bit of money had to be plunked down to get it set the way I wanted it and for my daily wear, but I knew it would be worth it. It has beautiful diamonds and shouldn't sit in a box for eternity, literally. I have now been in Metals in Time more this year than ever. I decided to reset another old engagement ring and have it custom designed with a halo as an engagement ring. Sergio sent us the CAD rendering a little after a week after kicking him off, he made a couple of tweaks and sent us the updated design the next day. The wax design was done within days and we saw it in person a week later, only because our schedule wouldn't allow us to get there sooner. It was really cool to see the green wax design in person and it was as we had imagined. Sergio made some suggestions to fine tune the wax design and he would tweak it and show it to us when he fixed the changes on the wax soon. In that same visit my BF found and tried on a ring he liked and we put down a deposit down on his wedding ring as well. I put a down payment on it on Tuesday and it was ready and sized for me to pick up by Friday. We picked up the men's ring on Friday and dropped off a ring earlier to be dipped in white gold, that was ready a few hours later when I picked up the men's ring too. We had to get the men's ring resized as the cutout made it fit looser than we had thought. It was resized within a few days. We were told the wedding band with the engagement ring would be ready to start in a few days and be done setting in about 10 days. We were excited and anticipating the finish of the platinum setting. 4 days later we dropped off the diamonds and the old setting to have them start setting the side diamonds into the engagement ring and band. It took a little over a week to set all of the side diamonds. We were called in to watch the main diamond be set into the engagement ring and what a cool experience that was. The engagement ring came out beautifully and the eternity band was well done and so comfortable to wear. The engagement ring was squared off on the bottom so it would not twirl on my finger from the weight of the center diamond and the halo. We received the appraisal paperwork and all leftover unused diamonds from the old wedding band. We brought the ring to have it finely polished and cleaned up the following week for some small pockmarks in the platinum. It took 3 days to buff, smooth, polish and clean it up. I trusted Sergio would make the rings perfect for us and he didn't disappoint us. It's an absolutely gorgeous engagement ring and the band is so beautiful too. Sergio told us that if we ever want our rings cleaned to stop by whenever. I am extremely pleased with my new engagement ring, eternity band redesign, my fiancé's diamond wedding band, my white gold dipped princess Di ring, the his and hers Cobalt simple wedding bands too. Every experience at Metals has been fantastic so far. I am glad we chose to work with Sergio and Metals in Time. Sergio and all his staff (especially Kayla and Sarah) have always been super friendly, extremely helpful and very attentive. I am very unhappy with the service of this place, and their policy. I walk in and there are 3 sales associates standing around. No one offered to help me and I had to seek help myself. I felt like they were judging me and no one wanted to help me since they knew I wasn't going to be making a big purchase. I got a gift from here, it was still brand new, never worn watch and they would not do a return. I saw on the receipt they said they would exchange it, but they were not understanding at all and were not willing to do an exception. I understand that they are a small business, but they should be flexible for reasonable means for their customers. In order to compete with big box stores you need to offer their same level of service. I tried calling back to see if I could speak with the manager, and the girl who answered the call was extremely rude. She treated me like I was crazy for asking to speak to the manager and asked who I was, what my name is, and put me on hold forever. I really wish I had a good experience here because I like supporting local businesses, but you're much better off at Nordstrom. You can make returns and exchanges there and they have a way better selection. read more

I have never been the "diamonds are a girl's best friend" type. On my single teacher's salary, I'd rather stock my jewelry box with unique flea market finds than pricey pieces. So when I found myself in a situation where a gift for a special person called for a special piece of jewelry, I was unsure where to even start. A good friend of mine has had great experiences at Metals in Time. But even on his recommendation, I couldn't help but feel a bit intimidated when they buzzed me inside and I caught glimpse of the endless shining, sparkling cases lining the store. The piece I had in mind was something that I knew they would likely have to special order. Sergio, the manager (owner?) gave me some catalogs to look though, and answered my questions patiently. Event though I know what I was spending was chump change compared to other customers they surely get, it was a large and important purchase to me, and Sergio and his staff treated it as such. When my item came in, they called me right away. I had discussed the possibility of making a slight alteration to it, which they completed in only a day's time. The final result was exactly what I had been looking for, and I will be very excited to gift it in the beautiful box they gave me to put it in. Metals in Time is high class without the pretention. Made from Germany, I love the way the designs are both masculine, minimal and definitely modern! I've been a customer for years, dating back to their prior location across the street. It's a family-owned business, and the customer service shows. My wife and I have purchased several pieces from them, but I want to talk about one in particular here - my wife's engagement ring. I didn't even buy the diamond from them, but that didn't stop them from giving me top notch service throughout the entire process. From helping me design the setting and meeting my aggressive timeline, then later pairing it with a wedding band and even recently during a repair (which was free!). I can't say enough good things about this place, and I never hesitate to recommend it. Are the prices high? This is a very unusual store. One gets the sense that they're not quite sure what they're doing, and are sort of bluffing their way through. The "fine" jewelry is the usual mix of low to mid grade jewelry "brands". They have some nice looking lower range items, but during my visit I witnessed a woman bring back a bracelet that had broken two weeks after she bought it (according to her), and the staff seemed to be back-pedaling their way out of fixing it. Then they have a bunch of mid to high end watches and accessories that are either pre-owned or gray-market, and the staff's knowledge of these items is almost embarrassingly bad. It's a little strange to be buzzed in and walk through a metal detector, but I get it. We went in a few months ago and the saleswoman walked us through everything for an engagement ring since this was my first stop. She encouraged me to try on everything even if I didn't like it in the case just to eliminate things. I really appreciated that, because she wanted me to be happy with the end result rather than falling in love with one thing and not trying on a variety to be sure I didn't like it on. She was very patient, explaining all of the different cuts and such. I probably tried on 30 rings just for the hell of it. I fell in love with one at the end, once we were sure I like something simple. There was no sales pressure, Sergio offered us a good deal on the ring we liked. We decided to purchase a diamond through Brilliant Earth that was lab created for ethical and sustainability reasons, but we'll be back soon to order the Veragio ring I fell in love with. We walked in one day on a whim, and I couldn't have been happier. we showed them the pic of the ring, they made the same one, even wider, for $1300.00. My husband and I have been loyal customers of MIT for years. We have gotten several custom pieces made, including our wedding bands, pendants, rings, and other necklaces. The pieces are always extremely well-made and beautiful, as well as reasonably priced. Sergio and the rest of the associates have always bent over backwards to make sure we get exactly what we want, and in the timeframe we need it (and sometimes we don't give him much time!). I've also purchased brand name jewelry from MIT for my mom who has arthritic fingers and cannot fit almost any normal ring lines, but Sergio makes sure to size them properly so that she can wear anything. I will also add that I'm sure that some of the pieces we buy are probably not even close to considered "high dollar" compared to other purchases, but we are always made to feel like we are high priority and important customers. I am so unhappy with this place. It started out ok when I made my purchase but it was a special order. They called when it came in and we set up the items to be engraved. 2 "S" 1 "I". The lady told me they would be done by Monday or Tuesday by Thursday I had not heard back so decided to call and see if they were ready. The man I Spoke with on the phone was so quick and rude. He said very quickly yeah their ready came in a few days ago. Ok so I got in my car an hour later to pick it up. It took them 15 minutes just to find my order, then tried to tell me my order would be $300 more then what was agreed upon because the sales associate quoted me wrong on the chains...then asked me why I didn't know every little detail to my order. THEN the "I" looked so much like an S that the associate had to ask his manager if it was the correct letter. I watched them under their breath discuss it for a little bit too long for it to be correct and then both came over to me to assure me it was an "I", The whole experience left a bitter taste in my mouth. At the end the associate apologized for it all taking too long and that normally they have a day to process it and then they call the customer to let them know it's ready...So I responded with then your manager over there shouldn't have rushed me off the phone and made me feel like my good for nothing order had been taking up room on their shelves. DO NOT GO ANYWHERE ELSE, METALS IN TIME IS BEYOND COMPARE!!! First of all, I don't trust anyone but from the very minute I called metals in time and spoke with Aaron over the phone I felt immediate relief. I recently got engaged in May and about a week ago I slipped and fell at work and bent all the prongs holding my center stone up so badly that the center stone fell out! Obviously I was extremely upset so my fiance and I rushed to the original jewellery store we purchased it from, Birmingham Jewelers, only to be told by the employees there was no way to fix my ring without adding additional metal pieces to hold up the center stone and the side stones would be falling out of the ring constantly the rest of my life. Their only solution to me was to pay an extremely large amount of money and completely change the look of the ring with no guarantee on the stability of the structure itself, and would take at least 10 business days. So they strongly advised me, that if they "were the customer", to call the police from the parking lot of a store, make a false police report stating that I lost the ring and claim $11,000 through my home owners insurance, then give them the money and they would give me the same ring with a slightly larger center diamond. !!!!!!!!!!! WHATTTT!!!!! I IMMEDIATELY LEFT!!!! I was so upset I started crying before we left the parking lot and truly believed that my only option was to pay for a ring to be fixed/fabricated that I hate or commit fraud... This is where Metals In Time saved my faith in jewellers. I called to get a second opinion over the phone since they're a certified Verragio dealer also and Aaron put my mind at ease by informing me of what I knew in my heart, that in fact that is fraud and there is no possible reason he could think of that the ring was unrestorable IN STORE. That's without him even seeing the damage. So I rushed down to Royal Oak to see if there was any alternative solution. That's when I met Sergio. He immediately said hello and began so reassure me that this was a very simple fix! He even went so far out of his way to help me that he took me into their vault to weigh my center stone in front of me and document the color and clarity of my center stone so that I could relax and did all of this in an absolutely professional and empathetic manor. All while beating the price of the repair by hundreds of dollars AND finishing the ring in literally 1 BUSINESS DAY!!!!!!!!!!! I never thought in a million years I'd ever trust a jeweller again! The owner is a thief. I had a watch in lay away and made the agreed paments and he sold the watch (with serial number) to some one else. I did get the watch back, after threats. I also found from the manufacturer ( Ulyssee Nardin) that he had the line pulled because of his shady operation practices. Stay away from this un-ethical operator. read more

Great experience with Metals in Time. Purchased two watches, one for me and one for my wife. Mine unfortunately had issues with water resistance on multiple occasions which was frustrating for me and probably for Metals in Time. Nevertheless, Aaron and Sergio worked with the manufacturer and made sure the watch was repaired and parts were replaced under warranty. All is great now and happy with the purchases. The best con artists are always the well-dressed dapper gentleman you'd never expect. That is Metals In Time. When it comes to sales, they have a lot of nice products and and they are good at selling, after that...good luck. My experience is based on multiple incidents with items I have purchased there. A swiss watch which had a broken crown. They charged $150 to repair it and never repaired it right. It broke 5 more times within days of fixing it and the last time they had the nerve to tell me I was breaking it. It is still broken and basically useless until I send it to the manufacturer. which will cost me another $150 at least Also bought a nice ring there for my wife. 2 of the diamonds fell out within the first year. She sent it to the manufacterer and they told her the stones fell out because of improper sizing of the ring. They are hacks and if you buy something there you could be in for a world of hurt if you expect this jewelry to last you a long time and need maintainence. DO NOT LET THEM WORK ON ANYTHING YOU OWN.
