Shinola Cafe: I heard it was the best matcha in town, so l had to go try it. I'd been to the cafe before just to experience the vibes, and they are great. Dim lighting, modern upscale design, and a record player playing chill tunes. I ordered the Plain Jane matcha which was $10.50. A little pricey, but I was willing to try it out. It was definitely the best matcha I've ever had, and it makes sense that it would be more expensive compared to other places' matcha which tastes watered down in comparison. I brought in a watch purchased two weeks ago (from a Shinola Outlet) because it was defective and losing time. The sales associate (blonde woman) was incredibly rude: * She ignored us for five minutes after we walked in. * She rolled her eyes when we said we hadn't been helped. * She was openly judgmental because the watch came from the Outlet. * She refused our request for an exchange, which directly contradicts Shinola's stated Holiday Return Policy (purchases made today, 12/14/2025, are eligible for exchange until 1/15/2026). She rushed us out with minimal service information. This level of unprofessionalism and policy ignorance is completely unacceptable for a brand like Shinola. The Shinola Ann Arbor store doesn't stand behind their products. We purchased an expensive gold bracelet for my daughter and the clasp broke. She took it back and they repaired it. Soon after it broke again. When she returned to the store, they told her that she needed to take it to another jeweler because it was no longer under warranty and there was nothing they could do. They also mentioned that they probably should've replaced it the first time instead of just repairing it but now it was too late and there was nothing they could do. Pretty unbelievably poor customer service for such a local iconic brand. Very disappointed and will likely never shop there again :( read more

We've purchased items from this specific Shinola store a few times now. I regularly purchase their monogrammed notebooks as work notebooks. But, this review is to specifically praise Andi and Paige's fantastic customer service. I looked at a few watches for myself while getting a notebook & Andi was kind enough to send an email after with photos of the ones I liked! From there that opened up a seamless connection for me to make a future purchase! A few months later, I emailed back because I wanted to buy a birthday gift for my spouse. My family was there one cold, rainy day in April this past spring. My younger brother and his wife really like this store. The selections do look nice and seem high end, but it's not a great place for a family with young kids and their older, not-so-hip, parents to shop. We tried out the coffee bar downstairs because we were chilled to the bone and needed a place to have something warm us up. The stairs are not elderly friendly for one. The place is too dark and there were far too many people just hanging about with their laptops taking up space where the eight of us needed to sit. The decor and the vintage accessories were pleasant, but the overall feel was unwelcoming and more like a bar than a nice place to come with family and friends to hang out. I do like the watches and other items they sell here, but there is just something a little off about this store. I don't know exactly what it is, but for such a high-end leather goods and watch retailer that claims to have exquisite craftsmanship, their customer service is terrible. They put off such attitude that I have no desire to spend my money here. Do I appreciate the attention to small details put into their watches and the fact that the company was founded in Detroit? I do. Do I appreciate their apathetic service and overblown pricing scheme for items that are nice, but not quite nice enough to justify the price of it all? No. The salespeople walk around in a fog and pay no heed to anyone needing assistance. I suppose they must not get paid commission because they truly don't seem to care if anyone buys anything or not. It's a disrespectful attitude and pretty snobby for salespeople who probably can't afford the luxury lifestyle brand that Shinola is, while their customers can, like myself. However, if I'm going to go out of my way to drive here and spend my money on Shinola products, I would expect a higher modicum of service. It just isn't found here. It's like they weren't even trying. During a recent visit here, I was interested in a few watches- I am a collector of both luxury and vintage watches, which unnerves my wife to no ends- so I naturally was eager to check out a few pieces. My wife looked over some of the handbags while looked at watches. Other customers milled about for awhile, none receiving a lick of customer service. There were clearly at least two salespeople standing in the back of the store chatting with each other with coffee in their hands, blatantly ignoring any customers in the background. It was obvious they knew people needed assistance or were willing to shell out big bucks on Shinola that day, but instead, they just kept to themselves, chatting over coffee. That was the epitome of both rude and apathetic. We turned around and left. They was nothing that impressive that would keep us in the shop at that point. We hightailed it out of there, with at least two other customers trailing behind us. I assume they were as put off by the whole experience as I was. The store looked from the outside, but the reality of it once we stepped inside was incredibly lackluster. Everything seemed well organized, but it looked more like a demo or display instead of a retail store. Everything about it had a standoffish approach and I wasn't feeling it. It's unfortunate because the products are nice, but there are plenty of luxury lifestyle brands out there at equal quality and competitive price points where the shopping experience is more pleasant and customer service-based. If I'm going to shell out that kind of money, I expect more than just the name Shinola attached. As for me, I prefer my Longines watches. They are mostly known for the large watch selection that they make themselves in Detroit. There is a a ridiculous amount of watch bands for sale as well, it looks almost like an ultra high end Swatch store in one corner. This location has a cafe downstairs for when you tire of shopping for above. They also have a few Shinola bikes scattered around the store that have a cool retro look to them. Admittedly I was more than a little bummed to hear that Commonwealth Coffee, which was the former administrator of this coffee bar within Shinola (and the flagship store in Midtown), was no more. I had been SO excited to have a C-Latte in my own town! Alas, the pop-ups ended and now Shinola has established their own coffee bar which is still pretty darn good in its own right. Not much has changed other than the beans and a few of the beverages so the feel is definitely the same. And let's be real, the real draw of these coffee bars are the Shinola products around you, and that's still the same. I know the Midtown location has switched to Sightglass coffee out of SF and I actually forgot to check to see if it was the same here. I'm assuming so. I was informed that a vanilla latte from here tastes like coffee ice cream (and they make their own vanilla syrup) so I decided to give that one a try. Admittedly the C-Latte is still my number one jam but this one is pretty tasty. I'd say the coffee ice cream comparison is pretty on the nose. Don't bother coming here to hang out and do work. Every place has a policy where you buy a drink to use the space which I understand. However, their wifi is horrible, which they don't mention. So, as I was sitting, trying to connect the wifi to my computer before I made a decision on whether I stay and buy anything, the unwelcoming and hostile barista approached me and urged me to purchase something. I told him I couldn't connect my computer and I was going to leave, but he wouldn't let me leave without buying something. Crazy. Shinola AA has finally opened! Even though I'm from Michigan, I never visited them in Detroit but have been familiar with their items. While they do offer their watches, bikes, and leather goods, they also do coffee and pastry goods. Overall, the place gives off a hipster, industrial vibe, but I still love their minimalist design. I'm incredibly excited that they opened up the basement which has a ton of seating available along with a large bar with some beer taps installed. I'm guessing they'll start offering alcohol in the near future once they've had a good grip on Ann Arbor. The only thing I can actually review is the Americano I ordered, which is a bit watered-down, but that may be because it's their first day and all drinks and pastries are free. Prices are actually reasonable so they may give The Espresso Bar a run for their money. They do charge extra for almond milk though... Anyways, the place has a TON of potential and I'm glad they've expanded from their leather goods and such to beverages and possibly food. Can't wait! Went to the store today about 2:30. I needed a new battery and leather watch band. I bought a new watch band a couple years ago and was shocked to at the cost. Fancy box. Watch band over $110.00! This time over $120.00!, They told me I voided my warranty by taking apart my watch to replace my battery myself. I have already replaced the battery before with no issue. I waited about 10 minutes for a woman to check to see if she could get me a battery. She disappeared. I waited about 10 minutes and she arrived with another young man who said that they cannot provide a new battery. He said I could probably get one at a Meirs store. I reluctantly bought the new watch band for over $ 120.00. I was the only customer in the store. I spoke to 3 employees. No battery. $120 replacement leather watch band. I was told I voided my warranty by replacing the battery which I have already done twice before. It is not "rocket science". I would strongly advise to go somewhere else for any purchase or repair for a Shinola watch. I stayed polite despite my outrage at the "service" they provided. I don't know how they can stay in business. Frankly- I don't think they will. Unbelievably bad experience. read more

When we walked in this past weekend, I was a bit surprised and disappointed. Where was the staff??? Yes, they do still sell shoe polish (that's where the name comes from), but this brand bears little resemblance to that company. Shiny luxury bikes, big chrome watches, and lots of leather phone covers --- New Detroit Chic, I guess you'd call it? The hipsterish staff is less haughty than many places with this sort of wares, but this place is definitely more about style than utility. Not much here grabs me, but it's a pleasant enough place. I do really like the products that Shinola has to offer. However, my Christmas shopping experience at the Ann Arbor store was far too overwhelming and made me quite frustrated. I will echo the sentiment read in an earlier review, though: This experience likely does not represent Shinola at large. I was shopping for my boyfriend's family, and had very specific instructions from him on what to get. When I walked in, I went to the journals/planners (each person was going to get a monogrammed journal or planner of some color/size). First, the journal specifics I was looking for were no longer available. This is not a big deal, because the Christmas shopping was belated and I did not secure the products early enough. That is on me. It was the very bizarre service I was provided after this realization. An employee came up to me and asked me if I had been helped. I smiled and said no, and she attentively came up to help me. So far so good. Employee: "What can I help you find today?" Me: "I am looking for some journals and planners. I need (insert colors/sizes/page style here, times three). I do not see those out on display though. Do you still have them?" Employee: "Ok, ok. First, who are you shopping for?" Me: "Well, I am shopping for my boyfriend's family. But I already have all of the details sorted out, and I know what I want." Employee: *walks over to display and grabs a completely different journal in burgundy* "Ok, I really love this one for mom. If you get this and have a monogram imprinted in rose gold, its just beautiful." Me: "That is very pretty, yes, but I already know what I need." Employee: (sounding taken aback) "Oh, ok. Well what would that be?" Me: *repeats myself* That was off-putting because I didn't feel like I was being listened to at all. After repeating my specifications, she very kindly went downstairs to look for the products I needed. When she returned and informed me that they did not have any more of the specifics that I wanted, I improvised and started picking out similar products based on what my boyfriend was willing to compromise. The employee continued to hover over me and every time my hand went near a journal, she had an abrasive comment about the differences between what I asked for and what I was grabbing, which I was aware of because she already explained that what I wanted was no longer available. Ok. So journals have been chosen. I tell her I need each monogrammed. She then takes me to the back of the store to ring out my purchase. After putting my information into the system (which took way too long because she took it upon herself to assume my e-mail very incorrectly, rather than asking what my e-mail was... I had to correct her), she rang me out and then led me to the monogram station. To be brief, pretty much the same thing with the monogram specifics happened with the journal specifics from earlier. I knew what I wanted and she did not seem to listen and had different ideas/suggestions. While I appreciate a knowledgeable opinion and tasteful eye, usually those suggestions are made for a customer who is on the fence or unsure of what to do. If someone seems certain, it seems odd to disregard their certainty. Lastly, she did not ask me where I wanted placement for the monogram and the first journal had very awkward placement. At this point, I felt quite overwhelmed and was willing to just get on with it when she asked me how I liked the placement (which is my fault, I should have corrected her placement for the next two). After confirming that the placement was fine, she proceeded to shift the placement for the next journal, which I was very confused about. Ultimately, I feel that I paid $65 for 3 products that I had to fight for and settle for, that I got after a very overwhelming customer service experience. read more

I would agree with the other posters. I wouldn't judge the Shinola brand by the Ann Arbor store. The Detroit and Troy locations are great, but the Ann Arbor location doesn't match. I went in asking to see a wallet for my husband. Everyone was hanging out at the desk and after a few minutes I had to walk up to the desk to see if anyone would be able to help me. One of them followed me back to the wallets. I asked how much it cost and the the sales person didnt know and yelled over to the desk for someone else to see if they knew. The guy yelled back, "no but I can check online." Then I asked if he had it in another color. They didn't know so he checked the website again. He said he didn't have it and he asked if I wanted to buy it online. Honestly, I went there to see the quality, not shop online. So I was pretty disappointed in the overall experience. Again, I've been to both the Troy store and the Detroit location and Ann Arbor seems to be the outlier. The quality of the goods is very nice. Walking into Shinola, I immediately felt intimidated. They are a bit pricey, but they are a lifestyle brand with high quality American made products. Wandering further into the store I found the notebooks, which are made right here in Ann Arbor, according to the sales associate! They are cute and affordable, so I bought a red linen cover with graph paper to practice my lettering. It's been a great little notebook, and the free monogramming is an excellent touch. My review is on the service I received today from a particular sales person and it may not represent the store's services at large. I understand that this store is new in this location but I still think they really need to train their sales persons better. I was excited to see Shinola Detroit had finally opened in AA. Today was my second visit to the store and I was looking for a small gift for my buddy. Overall, I love this store; its decor, its atmosphere, and of course its products. Perhaps, I was unfortunate that I was helped by this sales person, but she was very clumsy for everything. They said they've got a new system today, but it took forever for her to check out only the two items I was going to purchase. Finally, she got help from another sales person and everything went smoothly when she was being helped. But once the helper left, my sales person had a problem with the system again. ahh... It was nice that they can get the item personalized by monogramming it. So I asked her to get my buddy's initials on it. At first, I thought someone else, like, a craft man?, would work on it, so I was wondering why she kept the item with her while she's having trouble with the check-out. I just found it inefficient because monogramming would be done during this idle/wasteful time. The mystery was solved after the check-out. She's the one who's going to monogram the item. I screamed within myself, "Noooo, please let somebody else do it, not her!" I was about to ask that but I couldn't because I didn't want to hurt her feelings. ...well, as I suspected, she was again clumsy. She made me compromise as to how it is monogrammed because she was not able to fulfill my request. Even with the new simpler task, her first attempt was a failure. She brought another one from the stock and tried it again. I wasn't completely happy with the result, but I didn't want her to ruin the store's products one after another, so I took it by compromise. ...so that was my somewhat lackluster experience at Shinola AA today. In conclusion: Here's my request/suggestion to the store. Train your sales persons, or please hire someone only for monogramming and let him/her work on it while a customer is paying.
