Best. Esoteric. Bookstore. Ever! I vow to never visit Ann Arbor without coming to this bookstore. It's not huge, but it has awesome sections like psychology, religion, spirituality, magic, healing, even nutrition. It approaches life from a holistic, metaphysical but still grounded approach. It also has some oils, candles, and cool decorations like ankhs and things you can hang in your home for protection, like the evil eye, and what not. Upstairs I think they have tarot readings or something along those lines, I've only been up there to use the restroom. They also have a small discount section, oh and a little bit of jewelry! We walked in here just out of curiosity. We were glad we did! It has a lot of items in my wheelhouse including a strong connection to the spiritual side of nature, rocks, and books! I was able to purchase some stones for my collection. Some really beautiful items as well as some fun stickers and much much more. There is something for everyone in here The woman working the counter was so friendly and engaging. When I told her that we were just visiting she gave me some wonderful information about the store. Such a lovely store chock full of books and metaphysical items. While the tearoom part is currently closed, they are using it as an event space. I heard that you can reserve it for a small fee if you want to have a music recital or book reading or meet-up, but you can also hang out there when there are no events. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend popping in here just to browse, and you'll likely find something interesting to purchase! read more

I loved how organized the store was yet it still held a very warm energy. A nice curated selection of books and a great variety of metaphysical/spiritual supplies and items. Such a wonderful bookstore and tearoom! The tearoom is so cute and they have such a great selection of of teas! I stopped in for a coworking moment and ordered a pot of jasmine tea along with an order of their hummus. Service was very friendly and staff was super knowledgeable about their teas. I have not been here for almost two years when I found a spiritual Meetup that meets here every Friday evening and since I had the day off I decided to drive out. Even better than I remembered. Mainly a book store that carries books on spiritual growth no matter your beliefs. Candles, jewerly, statues, tarot cards, and other items that bring beauty and joy into your world. For downtown Ann Arbor, the price are reasonable and even less than some other stores like this I have been. With a tea room upstairs, you can look through books in a relaxing peaceful way. Some salads, sandwichs and desserts served. Also upstairs is a meeting room that is used for classes, author book signings, and other informational purposes. While I was there, a person was doing card readings. Of course, being in downtown, parking is tight, but a public parking garage is a block away that only charges $1.20 an hour, which is cheap for the area. With many other interesting shops around and too many places to eat, a visit will take a few hours. Hope to come back. Customer service is good. Other customers friendly. I knew I'd LOVE this bookstore. There were so many things I wanted to purchase, but I'll have to pace myself. LOL! I was worried that parking would be a headache. Main Street in Ann Arbor is a super popular/populated area. However, I visited on a Sunday afternoon and was able to park right across the street (metered parking). I fell in love with the variety of tarot cards and books. I found aura crystals that I'd been searching for high and low. On my next visit, I'll have tea and treats. Yes, we have experienced better. Yes, they had a decent book selection and eastern sculptures, incense and so on. However if your going for that reason (which we were) this store falls short. We were expecting a bigger selection with less of a mark up. It seemed this store is trying to create it's own unique ambiance, but lacks the cozy small town charm. The tea shop was also lacking. This is one of the nicest "New Age" Bookstore Gift Shops that I've been to in a long time. I worked at a crystal shop (Crystal Blue in Atlanta ) in the 90's, back when the economy was better and stores were packed to the gills with cool stuff and this shop reminds me of that time. I was driving through Ann Arbor with my husband while on a family visit trip to Michigan. I'd never been to Ann Arbor before and was excited to finally see it. This store has a huge selection of books, gifts, crystals, tarot decks, sculptures, oils, cards and more. To be honest I was so enthralled with the selections I didn't look at too many price tags. The few I did see had very reasonable pricing. It's very rare to see one of these shops with such an enormous inventory. Whomever does their buying picks magnificent things. I loved it and can't wait to go back! I will definitely be doing some Christmas shopping at their online store. :D Go check it out! read more

Adorable little bookstore on Main Street in Ann Arbor. They have really solid sections on gardening, baking/cooking, crafting, and fiction that I had fun perusing through this past week. I made mental notes to pick up at least 3 or 4 books the next time I'm a bit more flush. The prices are regular retail price although they do offer 30% off coupons if you sign up for their mailing list, which is pretty darn nice. The space itself is really relaxing and cozy. Two floors--first floor primarily books and other paperie/jewelry/home goods type of stuff and the top floor carries more books and a casual tea shop with pastries and other bits of food if you're looking for some sustenance. Occasionally they have music up there or other special events (like fairy tea for the kiddos) which help engage the community. Love it! read more

Though the upstairs is technically a tea room, they serve great coffee. They use Mighty Good beans, and don't charge extra for soy milk (a pet peeve). I love tea. - but I am not an expert. I just know what I like. Visiting CW tearoom yesterday; I ordered orange oolong as that's pretty safe and didn't sound as crazy as all their 'blends'. Really nice gal working the counter. She brought the setting and I let it steeped for two minutes. Surprising. Tea usually takes longer to steep or the water was too hot, but it was so bitter it was almost undrinkable. It was bad. I shouldn't have drank it but I did after adding a whole glass of cold water to cut it and a lot of honey. I went back to work and made myself another pot for my desk to counter the blunder. Lovely tearoom. Comfy and most patrons are quietly enjoying whatever is in their laps. I wish I ordered something else. I will next time I visit. read more

This place is lovely. It has the most calming ambiance, and it's a great place to study, catch up with a friend, or cozy up with a book. Crazy Wisdom is exactly what you want in a tea shop: got all the books, funky accessories, and a tea shop upstairs. They had really yummy sounding Holiday specials for tea (if I wasn't trying to be sugar free most days I definitely would have grabbed the biggest cup they had of a few of them). I got a chocolate covered cherry tea and some lentil soup. Not a lot of seating so we cozied together with another person at their large table. The soup was pretty good, came with bread and some veggie sticks. The tea was pretty good as well. They had no clean tea pots at that point since there was only one guy working the cafe it seemed so didn't get to steep my own brew. I absolutely love CWBT! The best part about this place, for me, is the tea room upstairs. They offer a list of teas that splits it up into the different types (caffeinated, non-caffeinated, etc) and even have a list of mixed tea that is supposed to take away or help ease a headache or fatigue. This place is my favorite thing about Ann Arbor. This store is so inviting. I try to visit at least once a week. Everything is beautiful, and very reasonably priced. Pick up a copy of their Crazy Wisdom Journal, a surprisingly large and engaging newspaper for a bookstore. I love the Tea Room too. There is a great view of Main Street. Try the hummus, and the lentils are also very tasty. I keep hearing new music I love, too. I've found several albums there that are on my wish list now. read more

The male barista seemed so friendly when we walked up, laughing and joking with his coworker. His demeanor suddenly changed when my wife and I approached the counter to order though, and we couldn't figure out why. We proceeded to order two small drinks and were coldly told one of them only came in a specific size. After we finishing our order the barista cheered back up and went on talking to coworkers and other customers who came in. Being from out of town and having never been here before, it's hard to imagine we could have done anything to offend this guy previously. Our only guess is that he made some snap judgment about us as people, or simply dislikes everyone who comes through the door who he isn't already friends with. Either way, this was definitely not the kind of experience we were looking for at a local coffee shop catering to the non-Starbucks crowd. One of the strangest parts is how many other patrons were there with us. According to my theory they were either all regulars, or we were singularly chosen as targets for rudeness. My chai was halfway decent, but my wife's iced americano was the worst she had ever had. She said it tasted like unmixed bad coffee and tap water. It was also cloudy and looked like the water coming out of a Flint faucet. read more

This is one of my favorite hangouts. I'm charmed by the variety of little new age and spiritual trinkets they have all over the shop, everything from candles to Buddhas to pendulums. I recommend getting their weekly emails for book coupons, which put new selections at prices on par with Amazon. Don't forget to check out the magazine rack at the back! You know, I came in loving this place and to some degree I still do, but I have been on the fence about it recently. I will only be speaking to the tea house upstairs. I love the tea house itself, and most of the staff are so friendly, not the manager though, she makes me not want to come in. lol Thankfully she is not there very often. I like it because they have a study table and let you sit there as long as you are drinking your tea. The problem I have with the tea house now, is that they have an old people's poetry group that uses the tea house every other wednesday evening. They already have events on Fri & Sat evenings. I just feel like there are only so many times during the week you can study or chat with a friend and they close early on Sunday, so that leaves only Mon, Tue, & Thur evenings you can be there, that's not even half the week. The poetry group is really disturbing because crazy wisdom has a room in the back of the upstairs area for events (talks, seminars, group meetings) and the poetry group refuses to use that space, so they'd rather take out a MICROPHONE (when everyone is studying or talking intimately with a friend) & start chanting and playing musical instruments that force everyone to leave the tea house. It's pretty corruption minded in my opinion, because the owner of crazy wisdom is buddy buddy with one of the poetry people and the poetry group is not paying a penny to take over the tea house and reserve it every other wednesday. Makes me question loyalty to customers versus picky friends who can use the meeting space for a poetry group, but choose to push everyone out of the tea house because they think a poetry reading should be officially held in a tea space. I am disappointed with crazy wisdom for their poor judgement about this situation and my friends and I have consequently stopped going to the tea house because of it. Many have complained about this, but it's an abuse of power issue with the owner. Giving the best man speech was going to be a piece of cake (that was a year before the wedding). Giving the best man speech in 12 hours..... I'm in trouble. Yes, I procrastinated the entire year. I had everything in my head and nothing written down. I was confident enough to drop a heart filled speech on the day of wedding. I will have everyone tearing and crying and awwww-ing. But for some reason the other best man had so much content in his speech (during our groomsmen meeting the night before). Man... I was in serious trouble. I had to at least match up to his speech. So I was lucky and found a wonderful book here at Crazy Wisdom. I picked up "Half Full" by Mina Parker. This book was filled with meditations on hope, optimism, and the things that matter. In other words, I got desperate and need a strong inspirational book to get me through this. So I read through the book and spend about a half hour at their upstairs café enjoying a well made latte and scrumptious muffin. Best man speech was done and quickly finalized the evening before bed. At the wedding reception, my well written speech had failed. After flasking my alcohol, cham-paining in limo, and killing beers and shots at the open bar... I just opened my heart and let it all out. What a way for Walter P to confess his love for his best friend Omar and jinx him and his lovely wife for eight kids. PS: Wennie, nobody can out do your best man speech! Who would have thought that a simple sentence and dancing like Austin Powers would get the crowd roaring! It's been like seven months since the wedding and I still hate you for that! LOL! What a nice little place to go relax and have a peaceful time. Crazy Wisdom reminds me of something you would see at Diagon Alley (Harry Potter). It is filled with fun, fantastical books and more, with definite Hindu/Buddhist influence. Aside from the tea room, where you can enjoy hot tea while lounging on the couches, was my favorite, the pendulums. I literally stood there for about 30 minutes playing with the pendulum, asking myself "what if" questions to help determine my fate. There is a wide selection of teas, including some medicinal ones and seasonal flavors. A pot will be sufficient for at least 3. Crazy Wisdom was a fun place to spend a couple of hours, and I definitely could've stayed longer. Enjoy the teas, the scents, the books, and whimsical findings in the stores. Once you get past the miasma of a putrid combination of every incense odor on the planet and make your way upstairs, the little tea room above the Crazy Wisdom bookstore really is a nice haven for study/work junkies. More of a tea shop than a coffee shop, although they do serve coffee and espresso drinks, it has dozens of kinds of tea (I recommend a blend of licorice and fennel). It has lots conveniently located plugs, free wireless internet, its not crowded on weekdays and the chairs and sofas are exceptional. You can get real food items (reheated) from Seva and various delicious-looking desserts (I don't eat those things so I don't know how good they are). Here's what sets them apart: They have a reading room in the back to have events (like poetry slams, drum circles, reading groups, etc) so they can sponsor cool events without directly encroaching on the tea room people. AND the tea room itself has live acoustic music on Friday and Saturday night 8:30 to 10:30. Not the best for studying to be sure, but for those of us who want to hang out in a cafe and have fun every once in a while this place is it. Arrive early if you'd like a seat. Update: I had to downgrade them to four stars because they close early (6:00PM) on Sundays. This is the twenty-first century, superstitions should not dictate store hours (an ironic claim considering the contents of the store). And as a practical matter the weekend is the WORST time to have reduced hours because that's when people actually have time to go out, have fun, and take care of errands. They lose a star for just being stupid about this. Update 12-19-07: I have to downgrade them another star for playing Christmas music. You'd think that with the nature of the store they'd be more respectful of alternative ways of thinking and realize that not everybody wants that crap forced on them. Of course I realize that this store is mostly for middle-aged suburban housewives to pretend that they are enlightened and spiritual when, in fact, they are consumerist yuppies with more money than sense. I would just hope and expect that a place like Crazy Wisdom would do more than cater to the consumerist zombies. read more
