After a long fight with cabin-fever-amidst-a-global-you-know-what, we finally found ourselves about two hours north of home in lovely Savannah. While dealing with work stress, I decided-as all young women under stress at some point do-to chop off all my hair. Prior to our trip, I entrusted the fate of my hair with a dear friend with these instructions: Pick a hairstyle for me, show it to the hairdresser, do NOT show it to me. Shaving my head is not off the table. On a quiet Thursday afternoon (well before the city would come alive with holiday tourists on the weekend), my friend and I hiked around the historic district to find a salon that could fit me in on short notice. After getting on the cancellation list at two different salons, we found Shine. The receptionist warmly welcomed us and I immediately felt less intimidated than I was at the previous two salons we tried. We happened to come at the right time, as Amy G. was able to fit me in with only a 10-minute wait. When we explained our blind-hairstyle-experiment-of-trust, she got so excited to be in on the plan. She was absolutely game for it! She offered her expertise in choosing a style based on the weight of my hair from the examples my friend provided. She's fast (with my dry haircut), detailed, and made sure the style looked even with how my hair is parted. Amy also took the time to fill us in on the insider scoop of Savannah-where to go, what to eat, what's overrated, what we should see. Ultimately, I'm glad we found Amy. She made our bonding experience so much more enjoyable. She's the type of person you feel like you've known forever. I was in town for a wedding and made an appointment to get my hair done for the wedding as it was a semi-formal event. Dawn and Anna, both, started working on my hair and then Anna did the majority of it. They are amazing! Doing hair is not a talent I have - my go to is a messy bun or a ponytail. Days I wash it are the days I leave it down. I showed them a picture of what I was thinking and they were awesome!! I was so happy with how my hair turned out! I would highly recommend Anna and Dawn at Shine Salon! The stylist working next to us was doing a blow out on a girl as well - she also did an amazing job. I eloped on New Years and knew a month in advance that finding a salon was going to be tricky. Shine assured me they could have a stylist who would be able to do my wedding hair. While the stylist was available, she was not able to achieve anything comparable to my wedding hair. I wish they would have told me outright they would have been incapable of doing my hair as I would have found a different salon or I would have tried to achieve it myself. I had the money to pay for what I wanted but what I got wasn't anything close to what that was. When the stylist didnt show me the back of my hair I knew I was going to be very disappointed. Within an hour of leaving the salon whatever curl she put in my hair was gone. I should have spoke up and begged her to use more hairspray or begged any of the other 2 stylists in the place to please help her. Like I said, I had the money to get what I wanted and I booked this specific salon a month in advance. I have never been this unhappy with a service but this was my wedding/elopement day. I was very nervous walking in already due to the stress of my event, but having my stylist yank her brush through my hair, trip over the cords from her curling irons eventually just getting visibly frustrated to where she yanked the plugs out from the power strip, compounded the experience in to probably the worst salon experience I have ever had. The makeup artist they hired however, she was good. Despite the fact she used lipstick with zero staying power that smeared all over my face after our first kiss and before our couples photo, I felt like she did a good job. But as far as my hair went, I am actually crying as I write this. You (hopefully) only get married once and if someone had emailed or called me that the stylist could NOT achieve the look I wanted, or as soon as I sat down in the chair she fessed up this was beyond her skills, I had the money to go anywhere else that had the ability as well as the willingness to go out and buy all the products I needed to sit in my hotel trying to achieve the look on my own. I do not recommend this salon, at all. read more

Love this salon! My previous hairdresser moved and this salon was recommended. What good fortune! I've tried several other places in Savannah with mixed results. The co-owner, Michael, was absolutely fabulous with my challenging hair. He's been in the business for years, is Vidal Sassoon trained and has owned a number of salons in Chicago and Nashville. He worked wonders on my cut and color, all at a reasonable price. If you have challenging hair, a good stylist is hard to find. So, if you want to find the original genesis for this journey, then you will need to go to my review for Salon 2010 to read about how this beautiful relationship began. You see, one day I lost my mind and cut off probably about 12 to 14 inches of curly hair. My hair was very long but IT was hot. Really hot. Like I have never experienced so much heat. Having just moved to Savannah, I was not prepared for the curl ruining, frizz-creating, anger-causing humidity that turned my hat into a wool sweater I wore daily on my head! After three months of summer suffering, I was DONE! This hair had to go. I contemplated the electric razor a la Pedro in Napoleon Dynamite (great scene, by the way: Pedro is Hot) but went for the kitchen scissors instead. If they could cut through chicken bones then they could cut through this! Snip! Snip! Snip! And. All. Of. A. Sudden. I. Was. Almost. Bald. (Cue the maniacal laughter) I put it all in a zip lock baggie and showed my truly terrified husband. The next morning, when I woke up I immediately reached to my head...Yep. It was still gone. Panic set in as I realized I had bald spots and well, I looked like I had cut all my own hair off. I don't really remember what happened next, just that I found Michael. He didn't judge. He let me cry. He fixed what I had left in the way of hair, and moreover soothed my ego. He reminded me after he was able to triage and save some, that my hair would grow back and more importantly that he would be here for me when it did. And you know what? IT did grow back quickly and along the way, Michael was there to shape and create the template for what I have now which is an adorable curly well-managed shoulder-length bob. He introduced me to Keratin and Bumble and Bumble and most of all, he restored my love relationship with my hair even in 92% humidity. So, bring your bird's nests to him; your basket case 'I am gonna chop it all off' to him; your scars from having your hair cut into a pyramid, a mullet, or worse (I have had both). Trust Michael with your curls no matter if you are a loose curl-classic curl (2's), tight curl (me; I am between a 3b and 3c), or kinky-coiled curls (4's). He can do it all. Dawn gave me an excellent haircut! I always get the same simple cut (long layers in straight hair) but for whatever reason so many stylists have messed it up. I am so lucky I found Amy for my wedding. She did an incredible job on my hair along with all my bridesmaids and mother-in-law. Everyone had a different hairstyle, we all wanted something a little unique and special and she just nailed it. Her braid work is stunning, and all of our hair stayed perfect throughout the day even amidst the awful Savannah humidity. She was a joy to have on our special day, she was fun and bubbly and sweet and helped keep me calm throughout the morning which looking back, I absolutely needed! I'm still loving Michael Whitehead's suggestions and styling. This sounds ridiculous as I'm writing it, but it is true. People have stopped me on the street to compliment my hair cut and color. I didn't realize this was something people noticed but apparently they do! I've been a client of Michael's for 10 years, and I'm so thrilled he and Billy finally opened their own salon. All of the stylists at Shine are friendly and professional. Their receptionist, Gilma always offers a warm welcome and a complimentary goodbye. This is a Bumble and Bumble salon, but I usually have to ask what products are recommended for my hair and current style. The sell couldn't be softer, and I'm appreciative of that too.
