We came here to celebrate a friend and left feeling pretty disappointed. The interior was nice, and our waitress was friendly, but she didn't check on us as often as we would have liked. Our water and drinks were empty multiple times. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming and extremely overpriced, especially for Hendersonville. I ordered the banh mi and wouldn't recommend it. The small sandwich was overwhelmed with mayo and lacked the traditional Vietnamese flavors I was expecting. To make matters worse, it was $18 and didn't even come with a side which felt unreasonable. For that price, I would much rather dine at Postero across the street. The restaurant asked if we were celebrating anything, and we mentioned a major accomplishment for our friend. While the waitress acknowledged it several times which was kind it was disappointing to learn that there was no complimentary dessert or gesture. Two exposures to the inept management of this place, their confused, dysfunctional host/hostess 'system', unknowledgeable waitstaff, and unreliable reservation system are not worth enduring. We had a reservation for six, including one handicapped member of our party. On two occasions, including one earlier the day of our reservation, we confirmed our request for a low table that could accommodate our party, fully explaining the reason for our request. When we arrived, 15 minutes before our scheduled reservation, we were told the only table they could offer was a step-up booth with very tight seating for six. I always look forward to visiting Shine, it's truly one of my favorite local spots. I especially love sitting at the bar where the laid-back, inviting vibe instantly puts you at ease. The bartenders are fantastic, and as someone who's worked in the service industry, I really appreciate the team's seamless coordination. There's never a shortage of friendly, attentive help when you need it. On my most recent visit, Joel, the bar manager, went above and beyond to accommodate my request for a mocktail. He crafted one of the tastiest mojito mocktails I've ever had, refreshing, perfectly balanced, and honestly worthy of a permanent spot on the menu! Dinner was wonderful from start to finish. We began with the escargot, and I loved that we were thoughtfully asked if we'd like bread to go with it (yes, please every time!). For mains, we enjoyed the steak frites, cooked to perfection, served with crispy fries and a delicious aioli, along with the goat cheese salad that featured stone fruit and a bright, flavorful vinaigrette. We have been to Shine many times but had an awful experience last night because of our server. Don't know her name because she never introduced herself but she was an older woman with the absolute worst attitude from the start. We asked about a children's menu and she rattled off some items and I asked if they have chicken fingers and she said "I said what I said" and walked away. Then when we inquired about possibly switching out the bun on the blackened grouper sandwich because of food allergies to the french bread provided on several other sandwiches she started arguing that the kitchen can make no substitutions (and I mean ARGUING). We asked to speak with the manager and once she arrived she said they could accommodate substitutions but the server still had an attitude so we just asked for the check for our drinks and that woman snatched up the menus almost hitting one of our party with them. Love the food at Shine but if we ever return and she is our server we will immediately walk out. I realize she could have something horrible going on in her life but take the day off then. This will be short. Went this past Friday night. We have been several times and enjoy this restaurant for its menu and quality of food. What I fail to understand is how the owners of the restaurant don't seem to care about the ambient sound that is just flat loud. Having a conversation in a booth even requires guests to lean over to talk. This can be fixed IF the owners wanted. I'm not looking for a library, just conversational level ambiance. We decided to try this place for a somewhat fancy date night. They have amazing service, and our server was knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. It's an approachable high quality restaurant, which we really appreciated. They have sandwiches and salads at a $12-20 price point and more expensive entree items, as well. We shared the lobster hush puppies appetizer. They were very delicious! I didn't think they needed the remoulade although it was good. I'm writing this after giving Shine multiple chances, which makes this review especially disappointing. Unfortunately, the issues here are consistent - not isolated incidents. Parking is difficult, the dining room is freezing, and it's extremely loud. Service has been mediocre to poor every time we've visited, but today was the final straw. I ordered the short ribs, a dish I've had before. While the meat itself is fine, the sides - gorgonzola potato purée and broccolini - are not to my taste. I simply asked if I could substitute fries or mashed potatoes and was completely fine paying extra. The waitress responded curtly and said she would "try." Shortly after, a man came to the table and told me that due to "presentation," they could not remove or substitute the purée or broccolini. I explained I had tried the sides before, didn't like them, and didn't care about presentation. He flatly refused. This has happened before. On a previous visit, I ordered the tournedos (ends of beef tenderloin) medium well and was told the kitchen would only prepare it medium rare. I do not eat rare meat. This has nothing to do with cost - we can easily pay for our food. This is about rigid policies, dismissive attitudes, and poor customer service. Shine is not a Michelin-starred restaurant with a fixed tasting menu, yet it treats reasonable requests as unacceptable. We left today without ordering. Lastly, the one-star reviews about the crème brûlée are accurate: it's served in an overly thick cup with a sugar topping so thin it barely qualifies as "brûlée". I wanted to order the Duck Confit sandwich with gluten free bread (might I add which cost 3 extra dollars here!) and my waitress informed me that was one of the sandwiches they cannot make gluten free. I have a lot of food intolerances so it was difficult for me to find another option without certain spices, fruits, vegetables, etc since all of the entrees are very specialized without options to substitutes. My boyfriend got a burger so I decided I would aswell, but with a gluten free option. I kid you not I thought it was a terrible prank, but nonetheless, this entree alone cost $20 dollars, and would have cost 3 dollars extra for each topping I added!!!
