I love a good speakeasy style bar and I really enjoyed the atmosphere in here. The drink menu isn't big but the drinks are unique and the bartender clearly knows what he's doing. There is a lot of charm to the decor and glassware. I'm sure with a piano player this place is even more fun. I can't wait to come back when it's back up and running completely! What a neat place! It was our first time visiting and let me tell ya, don't be fooled by the front door! We definitely were standing there, confused, for a hot 5 minutes. Then a nice man said to us, "You guys looking for the bar?" We nodded. And he said, "Follow me. I'm going there too." Thanks to that nice man, we found a way in on the other side of the building. The atmosphere there plus the music were super duper. The brick wall and the decorations were neat! They have a bunch of booths sectioned off which is very Covid appropriate. So that was nice. As for drinks, I got their whiskey sour, I don't remember the actual name, but it was DELICIOUS! My friend got their Gin with raspberry and lemon, and that was tasty too. When we went on Friday, there was a guy playing live music. He was good but we thought the volume was a bit too loud. We preferred the music they were playing earlier. Love this place! We went this past Friday to check things out before we take out of town guests, and because we couldn't wait. It is awesome to find a little local watering hole with history and an excellent vibe. Wonderful service and conversation with Nick and Shane. Mercedes (hope I spelled that correctly) was very welcoming and freely pointed out the historical photos along the hallway entrance leading to the sparkling velvet curtain. Yes, there is a curtain and beyond that is a beautifully appointed room. A marble bar with brass rail, stained glass windows and even some curtained booths for that intimate experience. Excellent choice of spirits and Nicks expertise behind the bar, deliver a delicious cocktail in beautiful cut glass service. A must do in my opinion when visiting Reno and avoiding the casinos. read more

I want to be sensitive to the fact that I visited Shim's just under a month from their opening and it's possible they were still figuring things out at that point. That said, my experience was disappointing and not at all what I was expecting given the rave reviews from my fellow yelpers and the Reno community. I think Reno has been so excited to have a speakeasy that they're looking past the significant shortcomings of Shim's. This place isn't secretive. It's much too large of a space to make it feel like a hideaway or your entering a prohibition era establishment. And the front door window remains open so foot traffic can see what's inside removing the mysterious nature of it all. The entire place and experience feels like a cliche of what commercial developers think hipsters want, and didn't do enough research to achieve the best results. They're trying too hard to be something they're not. Dressing your bartenders in era specific clothes and giving them "personalities" doesn't make up for the lack of atmosphere, the fact that the menu lacks prohibition era cocktails made with attention to detail, and is missing sofas and comfy chairs like that of a posh athletic club from days past. This is just another bar, that happens to have dim lighting and subway tile. There's nothing authentic or special about it. The cocktails are overpriced for the quality, the mysterious exclusivity of the experience is lacking, and modern day games like jenga are unfitting. It'll be interesting to see if they evolve over time; I sure hope they do. read more

I believe our third "speakeasy" in town, The first I was introduced to requires a password and knowing where it is. The second is really just another bar. Shim's is fun. The store front is just west of the El Dorado parking ramp on Third Street. Read the window signage closely and you will discover the hours, and the clue to getting inside. Maybe make a delivery. I miss needing a special knock or code word, but still unique. Once in, check out the cool photos of Reno's past. Then pass thru the heavy drapes into the dark seedy prohibition underground. Not really seedy, but very underground. The beautiful exposed brick walls and dark paneling is right up my alley. . Shim's is a decent size. On a Friday afternoon during happy hour, everyone seems to huddle at the bar. The bar is plenty long. There are numerous tables, and at the south end on each side are a few curtained booths. Now there's the spots to hang out and hide in case of a raid. They have their own specialty cocktail menu, but will probably create what ever you heart desires. As we entered I noticed a stage to the left. Here's hoping there will be some great entertainment down the road. I believe Esteban and I need a UYE there in the near future, but proper attire should be required. Right now, current century clothing is good. read more

Shim's Surplus Supplies is a new 'speak easy' style bar brought to you by the guys from Brewer's Cabinet. The front door shows that is is opening soon, but is actually open now. The trick is you enter in the back door marked "For Deliveries Only". What a great concept for theming and atmosphere and they have done a great job updating an old building that once had it's previous life as a Army Surplus Store. They offer local brews on tap (i.e. Dirty Wookie) plus a selection of some craft great cocktails. There are some booths that can be draped off for privacy and they have a small stage that will offer live music on the weekend evenings. If you enjoy a unique theme and a place to enjoy some quality beverages in a 1920's style atmosphere this is a must experience. Looking forward to enjoying some music on future visits. read more

This is a pretty awesome speakeasy!!! You are definitely transported back in time when you enter. The 1920s music was a delight and the bar chairs are extremely comfortable. It was quiet on a Sunday afternoon and we had a great conversation with Nick, the bartender, who also performed some magic tricks! The drink menu offered a special from each made alcohol group. I had the Brumbler and the Sidecar. I appreciated the uniqueness of these drinks. They were very sippable and not something you would guzzle down right away. A perfect drink to sit and enjoy good conversation. There are privacy booths as well if you'd prefer that. There is a stage for music that we were told we should definitely come back for. I'm giving this place 5 stars just because I think it's awesome that there is a speak easy in town. I used to go to this bar over 10 years ago when it was a blues bar and I liked it then too. Drinks are average nothing too special so if you are looking for fancy this isn't the place. First thing was I went to the front door and it wouldn't open. So I thought there was a secret knock...so I knocked. Nobody . "Deliveries in back." So with some help of my friends I entered via the creepy dark ally in the back. 1920's music roaring with a cool theme and friendly bartenders. One that I tipped very well for his amazing magic tricks!! Then live music by an awesome musician (not sure who ) but very good. It's a great place to go with groups. It wasn't very crowded last night and I imagine most of the time it's a quietish gem. I really liked this place. read more

This was my first visit to a speakeasy so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm glad it was Shim's. None of my friends knew about this place so it was fun showing them the way in, and also watching others at the storefront trying to figure it out. I was partly expecting to have to knock on the door and was surprised to find it open, but I suppose on a Friday night the door can be difficult to attend to since it's separate from the bar itself. The first thing I noticed after entering the bar was the stage to the left. There was live music by the Peanuts Gang, I believe. They were a joy to see. Apparantly Shim's has live music often which I love. The bar was long and accessible. For a Friday night, I was surprised that this place wasn't packed. Possibly because of HAN, possibly because they don't advertise. Either way, surprising for how cool it is. The owner put a lot of work into the decor and it does feel like you're entering into a secretive location from another time. The booths with the curtains in the back are fun for large groups, quite private. Drinks prices aren't far off from others in the area so you aren't having to pay more for the experience. It's a place you'll want to stop in again and again. read more

This place is a speakeasy, cute little place. You can't get in through the front entrance but it leaves little clues on how to get into the bar. It has funny little signs in the bar such as, "our ice is gluten free". Great bar to hang out with friends and have fun! I got the brumby drink as recommended by the bartender, it's super sweet and tarts at the same time. It's a vodka base with a raspberry liquor and fresh squeezed lemon juice. Definitely recommend. Pretty quiet place and they sometimes have a live band. (Didn't have one tonight but I heard about it). A bar I definitely recommend, must try guys! read more

Such an amazing concept and delicious cocktails! It smells like new wood flooring and a beautiful marble countertop to match! So aesthetically pleasing. They have nice booths if you want some privacy while on a date. Tried the Bumble and Manhattan both excellent. I was also fawning over the tiny ice bucket given to me for the remainder of my champagne! The whole vibe is 1920s and their staff is so amazing. Even got an amazing magic show! This place is super cute! It's hidden behind an old wooden door. You walk in and there are cute booths and seating area all very "cigar lounge" like. There is jumbo jinga to play as well as chess and checker board. It's super cute inside. We were there very early, so we didn't not get to hear the live music. But the stage is in the center and would be a great place later that night. We had an old fashion and I had the bar tender tequila nuts and berries. T was his mixture and it was delicious. Definitely stop here on your "Speakeasy" adventures. I would suggest going to hear the live music which usually happens around 8 PM. read more

The front looks like a Surplus store but when you go around back to the alley, there is a door leading down a long dark hallway that opens up to a beautiful bar with private booths in the back. A really cool idea with a classy interior, much better than the prior iterations of this location. The bartenders are a BIG step up from the last crew and they are friendly and funny as well! I had stopped drinking for the night but the bartenders made me a virgin something or other (I told them that it was their choice) and it was tasty! My partner had a gin drink that was equally as yummy. Both were downed in under 10 minutes! We didn't stay for long but I'd like to go back. I think it is a bit romantic, especially in the booths. My first visit to this new "speakeasy" in downtown Reno. Easily found, the entry is around the back in the form of a non-descript door. Very nicely appointed interior, with a bandstand area. Cocktail menu seems limited, perhaps due to decency of opening. Beers and wines also on offer. I give it a provisional 5, expecting to see more cocktails or at least a menu of their liquors. Went at 8pm on Saturday. Admittedly a little on the early side but other Reno bars were already energetic. The place was bright and boring. The awkward pause in between songs on the sound system left the entire bar silent and patrons whispering just to not be overheard. Not what we were expecting. Not what most expect from a bar. We went for atmosphere and found very little. Bars should be dark and loud, especially a speakeasy. It should feel mysterious. This felt normal. The only bit of energy in the place was the cheering after a jenga game collapsed with a loud crash. It was nicely decorated, but could use even more. I didn't love the tables, would prefer couches or tall boys. The booths were cool and draped. I do expect a speakeasy to have period-specific drinks. This was disappointing. Their limited cocktail menu didn't seem that interesting but some patrons seemed pleased. Their showmanship was on point. Beautiful glassware and stirring techniques. I ordered off menu to see what they could do and my husband ordered a martini with a new-to-him gin. I have very high expectations for cocktails when paying over $10 and this was so disappointing. I ordered a St Germain Cocktail, the officially result being a spritz. Now I should have said I wanted a spritz but what I got was syrupy and sweet. The bartender put in 2 parts some well alcohol I could decipher, and one part St Germaine. The twist of lemon was nice but the drink was not good. Neither of us finished our drink and left disappointed. This place is new. Maybe they will figure out a niche that will keep them in business but I hope they keep tweaking it to get the atmosphere right. And either charge less for drinks or increase the craft level. This place is special. So much more then the cute gimmick of the entrance. I appreciate The effort put in the the signature cocktails so much and the cost Is more then reasonable for the experience. If you have been at peek time do yourself a favor and go in a bit early, before the crowd. The bartender (I am so sorry I don't remember his name at this moment) with the spectacular accent is a joy to talk to. He takes pride in the projects they have going behind the bar that go in to these delicious drinks. This is one of the only bars I have been in where people of all ages and all backgrounds can enjoy a night and not feel out of place or uncomfortable. I must say I am blown away. One star is over rated for this review. If I could give negative stars I would. We visited this establishment last night only to feel like people of any nationally other than Caucasian are not welcome. We enjoyed a drink while a band by the name of The Peanut Gang played. We enjoyed it and when it came time to leave as we were walking out a member of the band asked us "What's wrong you guys don't like our American Music." Completely confused about this comment I turned around and questioned why he would ask us something like that. He didn't have anything to say back. The door man was sincere and very apologetic for the mans comment. Still bothered today about the comment I reached out to the owner who gave me his number to talk. He told me that I was pretty much overreacting. I thought that was funny seeing as his door man seemed to feel the same as I did. He stated that he does not interview or control the bands that come in to his establishment. I thought this was very weird that an owner would not know who he has doing things for him in his place of business. I also explained that I felt like it was racist of the band member to ask something like that. The owner reassured me that it was not racist as he has lived in Mexico and has experience racism towards himself first hand. I'm not sure what that had to do with this situation, I guessing it's because I told him that my family was Mexican. He then asked me to draw up an interview form if I felt like there were questions he should be using to interview bands like "are you a trump supporter, do you like people of color." Needless to say I was blown away and want everyone to know this is probably a place you do not want to associate yourself with. Sincerely an American Music Lover! read more

I am such a sucker for a speakeasy and I'm so glad Reno is getting more of them! Really fun place with great cocktails and live music, plus no password needed. Cheap drinks that are super tasty. My favorites are the citrous flower sour and the brumble. It's a small intimate place with some larger booths in the back, so if you're with a really large crowd, this might not be the place for you. On opening night a friend got kicked out due to "dress code" even tho all of us were wearing t-shirts(it is Reno for fooks sake) he targets the brown Indian guy for having a leg brace on.
