This True Value store is one of the closest hardware stores to downtown. It's easy to get to off…read moreof Grand or 63rd, but turning around a trailer could be tough in this parking lot. The store is really clean, and there were actually employees walking around being helpful. What I like about these sized stores is that you can find your way around and things are geared more to homeowner type projects instead of contractors or renovations. You want to come here for those smaller projects, or if you need advice on something in your house. I wouldn't come here to buy yards of topsoil or huge piles of lumber. For us, it was in and out in 15 minutes to buy a hose, some seed and fertilizer. Prices were good (be sure to check out their house brand - it was cheaper than the big brands), and I found the selection to be good as well. Oh, and they rent tools if you need them - especially garden stuff (like sod cutters or rototillers)

I didn't want to pay the $$$ get the dealer replacement. I'd been to other hardware stores that had the right width of screw, but way too long. Anyway, I decided to give this store a try. I walked in and the person at the counter asked if I needed help. I told him what I was looking for. He directed me to the correct aisle, which end, and which side of the aisle. When I got there, there was already another employee there helping someone else. After he finished with the other customer, he asked if I needed help. I showed him my key fob and went to work to find something that would fit. Eventually, he found one and even screwed it in for me, which was great because I definitely don't have a hex wrench small enough for that screw. In the end, my bill was 99 cents plus tax. What a great deal, and great customer service!

We would talk to sales associates who were clueless and would subsequently sell us the wrong item. A case in point was some pie hinges for our new custom kitchen cabinets. When I finally was so frustrated with the home improvement stores, I walked into the Woodsmith Store and they knew immediately what I needed. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and actually seem to be woodworkers, not just clerks wandering aimlessly. While there I also visited the garden center and was awed by the selection and the knowledge of the staff. I will be back time and time again!!!

You don't even have to buy the block from them. The man who did the cut for both kids was awesome. He showed them after the cut how there are now grooves from the cuts they need to sandpaper off. The prices are comparable to the big stores, but the service is ten times better and there is no long wait in line to have your paints mixed. I took in a sample of woodwork and they matched with a custom stain within minutes. At the big stores, I had to shop from a piece of paper to match as closely as I could. John and his staff took the time to make a custom stain for me and removed all of the guess work. I will always buy my paints and stains at this location. They are the best!

The things that make me like going to this Home Depot... 1. The app. If I don't choose to buy the item online and do a pick up the app tells me what aisle the item I'm looking for is in and what section of the aisle I can find it at. 2. They offer a veterans discount. Not much... But it pretty much covers the sales tax here in Iowa anyway... It's easy to sign up for and add to your app if you have ID.me setup. Once it's in your app you just scan the QR code for the discount when you check out. Like any other Home Depot or Lowe's no one is EVER around when you actually need them. And I've learned to deal with that... Lol Parking is easy. The lot is huge and the store is fully handcapped accessible. They do offer a special parking space for veterans as well (one spot). The store is clean and easy to navigate. When I do need to flag someone down for help they are usually personable enough...when you can finally locate someone. The big picture... It is what is is. A HUGE big box store, with affordable prices, housing every item you could need for a project...and then some!

I walked over to the check out, and saw another customer asking a question- the lazy checker didn't respond and just pulled out her phone- I guess to look up the item, the customer said, "Never mind I can look it up too, but probably faster." Then the lazy can't be bothered cashier, still leaning on a check out stand, said to me in an I'm gonna fall asleep tone, "Those registers are closed." So I went to a different register, then heard another customer say "Is anybody working here that can help us."The lazy employee just sat there on the closed check out stand, but a young man ran over to help. At that point I just pretended like I lost my wallet and left. What was I thinking? It's always the same. ‍ If you go to this West Des Moines, Home Depot, and see this employee, she won't be helpful at all, best to go to Lowe's or Menards.

I've been painting homes for nearly 30 years now and had to laugh when the store manager Brittany, tried to tell me how the paint samples Sherwin Williams provides don't really match their actual paint products. We had a situation where paint mixed at the Douglas Ave. store in Des Moines was clearly different than the Sherwin Williams paint sample provided. This led to 4 hours of paint crew time lost applying a bad color mix from this store. After several phone calls and a return trip to give the store an opportunity to offer a remedy; for instance, store credit for the cost of bad paint etc. any remedy at all really, store manager Brittany doubled down on her bad product and service. Naturally paint sales are final for obvious reasons, but when your Douglas Ave Des Moines, IA store jacks up the mix, costs customers and contractors time & money, doing the right thing seems so simple. Best advice don't shop here. You'll get a better deal where the store and its associates care about your project and know how to do their job
