They have a (free!) website where you can make a profile and sign up to volunteer. They partner with almost all nonprofits in Sacramento, so if you are interested in serving food, helping animals or bettering parks/neighborhoods (or anything really), you can check online to see what/when the next project is. They also host some big, city-wide events, like volunteering on MLK Day. Those are pretty fun because so many people show up. There is a Hands On (whatever city) in many places all over the country. I like Hands On Sacramento because: 1, I used to volunteer with them all the time 2. The staff you deal with is great 3. They partner with so many amazing orgs (and there are so many absolutely fantastic organizations in Sacramento - one of the things I am actually impressed by in this generally unimpressive city) 4. The big events they host are fun and they accomplish a lot So yeah, if you are looking to volunteer for a day, for a few months or even longer, you should definitely start your search by looking at what Hands On Sacramento has to offer.

I really enjoy that they feature local artists with different themes every month. I've seen some really beautiful work there. Two of my children have had pieces on exhibition at this gallery and I happen to have one there this month under my artist/social media name. They also have a ceramics studio where they teach classes. The volunteers and employees are super pleasant and help give this place a very welcoming feel to it. I explained that I could no longer attend because I needed to be present for the funeral and ceremony, but my request was still denied. What made the experience worse was that Dave Wilkerson, Director of ACAI Studios & Gallery, personally doubled down on the decision despite the circumstances. A policy is one thing, but compassion and basic humanity should still matter. Being treated this rigidly during a family loss was honestly upsetting and disappointing. I would not recommend supporting an organization that responds this way to someone dealing with a bereavement emergency. Would you want to be treated this way after losing a family member?

Best of all, it seemed like they all knew each other. Collaborate much? I think yes. :) The format of the meeting was professional and well- planned with printed out agendas. I'd have preferred if the meeting was announced with more notice. This is a regular issue with the district. For those with families or pets or plans or lives, it's difficult to get to a meeting with only a week's notice. Also, it's clear the district employees care. But sometimes their interest makes them defensive and take things over personally. It's key to remember that it's our district-- you just represent us. Our dollars pay your salaries. Don't let your passion hold you back. But I suppose I'm guilty of the same at my job. So that point doesn't take away any starts on the yelp rate-o-meter. I look foward to future engagement with the good folks at CRPD who work hard to better the community.

Where ageism doesn't exist :)…read more I'm so grateful I can even write this review! Where, albeit the slight hoodness, can a place where the elderly come and hang out and do fun things to keep them entertained? I only generally come here once a year, but this year it was twice. Every Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Cal PERS hosts a Thanksgiving lunch for the people who frequent this center. They cook and provide all the trimmings for everyone (kudos Cal PERS staff). We volunteer by cooking, serving, and cleaning for the center. It's a great atmosphere, fun to interact with the patrons, and support a local community center..which are few and far between these days! My other random visit this year, was for their Bunco fundraiser. Bunco seem so intimidating to many, but it's the easiest game to play, I swear! $20 buy in, but you can also win cash prizes at the end. They also offer a raffle and some super cheap wine (via drink tickets)! A great fundraiser for sure! Happy to donate my time to this awesome center, you should think about it too...I dare you...

Stanford Settlement was the closest one with the earliest appointment so I scheduled my appointment for 1/6/2022 at 11:30am. The hours listed was 9am-1pm. I get there about 11:20am and see a long line out the door, about 20-25 people in front of me. I ask where the line is for people with appointments and the people in line says there is no separate lines for walk-ins and appointments. Ok. I walk to the back of the line. The line does not move for at least 30 minutes, it's freezing out. Around this time, a lady comes by and goes down the line apologizing for the wait and telling us that they'll plan next Thursday better. Even though they "closed" at 1pm she assured us that they will ensure that anyone currently in line will get their shots. 1/6/2022 must have been their first time giving out vaccines? I finally receive my shot around 2pm. Even though I had an appointment and gave a bunch of info for the appointment on MyTurn, everyone was still required to fill out a form with the same info. Also, your barcode from MyTurn with your info is useless. They had nothing to read the barcodes. Everyone filled out forms and surrendered their IDs at check-in. You get your ID back after your shot. Was not planning on having to wait 2.5 hours when I had an appointment. I appreciated that the lady came out that one time at the beginning of our wait but seriously, no one in line anticipated waiting that long. That was my lunch break, I was starving and very thirsty. Just saying if your going to make people wait who were definitely not planning on waiting that long, some water would be appreciated. I would have brought my own if I knew it was going to be that long of a wait. It was so disorganized at every point of the process. The check-in desk is right at the door so the line for waiting is outside, it was a cold day-50 degrees. Around 2pm right before I got my shot they must have closed the testing site in the next room because another nurse came to help administer the shots. That means from 9am to 2pm there was literally 1 person giving out vaccines. So the layout was 1 person at the front registering people. 1 person preparing the needles, 1 person administering shots (2 people starting around 2pm) and 1 person letting you know when you can leave after your 15 minutes. As I was waiting the 15 minutes after my shot I noticed that the person preparing the needles was on her phone while the two nurses (and two patients) were waiting for their needles. OMG, I can't even.

I came here to volunteer, and to my surprise, there were even younger kids participating. I learned that the minimum volunteer age is 10 years old. Some students were volunteering for school service hours, while others came through different companies and organizations. We joined the second shift from 1pm-4pm. The session started shortly after 1pm with a briefing and task assignments from the group leader. All tasks were explained clearly. The leaders checked on us throughout the shift to make sure we were doing okay and to see if anyone had concerns. Halfway through the shift, we had a 15-minute break, and one of the leaders brought ice cream to celebrate a volunteer's birthday and shared it with everyone. I thought it was a meaningful way to celebrate a birthday while helping a good cause. We actually finished around 3:30pm, and our shift completed: - 5,451 lbs of food packed - 474 boxes prepared for the "No Student Goes Hungry" program supporting students from elementary school through college in Sacramento County. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and organized. Restroom: clean, bright, and decent. If you are interested in volunteering, check out their website and register in advance.

Within all of this stuff, was a bunch of new and lightly used clothing. In the past I have donated clothing to my local Goodwill Express. However, I did some reflection and realized that all of the clothing that I donated was being sold for profit. Going forward, my intention was to donate to an organization that receives the donation(s) and distributes them to underprivileged individuals/families free of charge. Some research led me to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Upon calling to verify their hours (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 10am-1pm and Wednesday, 4pm-7pm), I gathered all of the clothing and hit the road on a mission to make a difference. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a Sacramento Food Bank employee who eagerly began to load my clothing donations onto a cart. Since a lot of the clothing consisted of dress pants and dress slacks, he proceeded to inform me about a program called "Job Smart Clothing." Job Smart Clothing is a program within Sacramento Food Bank that provides career appropriate apparel for underprivileged individuals interviewing for employment or currently employed. How cool is that? I'm not a representative for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. However, I will say that they provide an awesome service to the community, and that a little donation goes a long way (individuals who benefit from their services often leave with 15-20 pieces of clothing per visit). Before you throw away that piece of clothing that you think is out of style or doesn't quite hug your curves the way that they used to, think about donating it to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services!

After three years of living with me, it became clear that Mom needed a higher level of structure, supervision, and social interaction than I could consistently provide at home. I began an extensive search, exploring nearly 40 different care options -- everything from large assisted living and memory care communities to smaller, private board-and-care homes specializing in dementia care. I asked tough questions about caregiver-to-resident ratios, staff turnover, nutrition, movement, music, routines, and social engagement. Jazba quickly rose to the top and became the gold standard by which I compared all other options. Here's why: A Warm, Homelike Environment: Each Jazba residence is a single-family home, full of light, warmth, and thoughtful design. Far from cold or clinical, they're inviting, clean, well-organized, and charming. Visitors and residents alike feel at home the moment they walk through the door. Nutritious, Family-Style Meals: Meals are prepared fresh each day and enjoyed together around the table. The menu follows the MIND diet -- rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based, high-fiber foods -- supporting both brain and overall health. Meaningful Daily Activities: Every day includes music, art, gentle exercise, fresh air, and light occupational therapy. Holidays, birthdays, and life milestones are celebrated with joy and creativity that rivals any kindergarten class -- in the best way possible. Field trips between homes build a sense of community and connection among residents. Unconditional Acceptance: Residents are met with patience, dignity, and respect -- always. Whether a story is told for the third time or a memory gets fuzzy, staff respond with kindness and compassion. This culture of acceptance extends to everyone in the home. After just a month at Jazba, my mom began speaking to me with more warmth and tenderness than I remember from my youth -- a transformation that still moves me deeply. Compassionate, Competent Care: The staff are not only incredibly kind, they're highly capable and organized. Detailed records are maintained for every resident, which allows them to tailor care and keep families and medical providers well-informed. Whole-Person Support: What sets Jazba apart is their commitment to the whole person -- not just the diagnosis. My mother is a lifelong Seventh-day Adventist, and her faith is central to her identity. I worried about how she'd feel when she couldn't attend church regularly. Jazba didn't miss a beat: the team helped arrange transportation when possible, and on Saturdays when she couldn't go, they streamed the service on the big TV so she and other residents could participate together. When I visited later that day, I found them making crafts and listening to uplifting music. It was beautiful. Connection and Communication: Every week, I receive text messages and photos of Mom -- laughing, doing light housework (which she adores), creating art, or exercising with others. She's been at Jazba for four months now, and I can honestly say: this is the happiest I've seen her in over a decade.
