After years of sporadic (temporarily-patched) leaks and a garage roof that pooled water, I knew it was finally time to replace my 35+ year old roof. I started my search by getting estimates from a half-dozen roofing companies, all of which were highly rated by the Bay Area Consumers' Checkbook and other sources. I chose Sherman Roofers, led by Kyle Sherman, because he most aptly demonstrated his obvious knowledge, expertise and experience, coupled with the fact the he quoted a very reasonable price. I knew they would be the best value in all categories. From our first meeting, I was impressed by their professionalism and punctuality. When they said they would be somewhere at a certain time, they were. This level of reliability showed me how seriously they took their work. The work itself was outstanding as far as I could tell. The crew was courteous, hardworking, and consistent, led by a communicative and easy-to-work-with foreman, Victor. At the end of each day, they meticulously cleaned up all equipment and debris, leaving my property spotless (and believe me, I was looking). It was as if they were never there. They also installed a new drain in the middle of my garage roof, solving the problem of standing water and saving me from the dangerous task of climbing onto the roof -- often in the rain -- to pump it out. As a senior, this peace of mind was invaluable. The final inspection easily passed, and -- while I'm no expert of course -- the roof looks fully completed and ready for winter. I requested a reroof estimate from Sherman and they sent someone out, I believe it was Kyle Sherman. He got up on our roof, inspected and promised an estimate the following week. We waited and no estimate was provided. I called their office and the woman I spoke to said she'd find out and get back to me. Crickets... I called and noted that we are looking to get this reroof or partial reroof done as soon as they were available and wanted to get on their calendar. Nothing still. I understand roofing companies are busy during this rainy season, but don't waste my time and your time if you aren't going to follow through. I mean, why bother coming out if you are going to ignore us after the fact? If you are too busy to take my money and business - don't agree to come out and give us an estimate if you don't have time for us!! We ended up going with a different local roofing company who are the polar opposite in that they are responsive and straightforward. They gave us a reasonable estimate the same day that they came out. I've been a real estate transaction coordinator for decades and agents always ask me for vendor / contractor recommendations. We called Sherman roofing to replace our old roof, redo our gutters and replace wood rot. They came out and gave us a timely quote, but explained there was a 3 month wait for next availability. Within 3 months they called us to start the project and were finished within 3 days. Job site was left clean each day and team was on time and efficient with working. I don't know whats up with this roofing company. I guess I upset them because I had to delay my scheduled estimate time by a couple of hours. They were supposed to come out after 11:00 on Wednesday but the owner called and asked if he could come on Thursday at 8:30 am. Sure, no problem I said. By 10:30 am no one showed up. So my wife calls, left a message and someone calls back and says, OH I have you scheduled for Friday at 8:30. OK, no big deal to me. My house in Pleasanton had a leak around the skylight area in early March, 2014. The roof was tile roof. I have called over 10 contractors in Livermore and Pleasanton area. One company charges $90 for evaluation. Most others gave free quotes. But it's not easy to get the quotes quickly. Some company doesn't answer my message. I have got 5 formal quotes. The highest bid charges $1500. There were quotes of $600-700, one $450. For some of the quotes, I have to wait for weeks before they can do the repair. Mr Sherman charge only $175 for the repair. He came to my house the second day I called, did it in one hour and the roof is fixed. No leak after the testing of another big rain storm. I am totally amazed.
