I came to Yorkgate Mall two Saturdays ago to pick up dinner at China Wok Super Chinese Food. Due to…read morethe pandemic and my comfort level being in malls, I didn't walk the entire place. The mall is an older one. There is lots of construction happening outside, which can be a bit challenging when entering and exiting the parking lot. It was pretty busy traffic-wise along Finch Avenue West when I pulled in. This mall is at Jane and Finch. It has a bad rap for being a rough area. However, it felt pretty safe when I was here. Things seem to have changed. I entered from what I believe is one of the two mall entrances. This one was closest to Finch Avenue West. I walked up a flight of stairs to get to the food court. The chairs and tables have been removed, but the light coming through the glass was nice. Only Caribbean Cuisine and China Wok were open when I got there at 5:30 pm. The top floor across from the food court has Seneca College, Ziwa Cell Phone and Computers, and Shiv's Jewellery. When I entered the mall from the main level, Tim Hortons was buzzing with business. The York Woods public library is further down, but has been closed during this pandemic. This mall does have businesses that interest me. There's an LCBO, No Frills, Dollarama, Harvey's, and Bulk Food Mart. I'd like to return when I'm ready to shop and check them out. It's a good mall for my needs. If I were a local, I'd be content with the store selection at this mall. There was plenty of parking. (117)

Upon approaching from Lansdowne I felt a sense of happiness, to see planet fitness gone, only to…read morewalk in and see they now occupy a small portion of what remains in the anterior portion of this mall. As someone who grew up frequenting this mall I will miss the clothing stores in the back, I remember buying a lot of my clothing there( in my Gino days) and my first chain that I ever had. But I'm getting away from the point, what Is left isn't really all that nostalgic. Aside from the floor which is the only authentic thing left this place feels like overly gentrified garbage, however looking at it objectively for just a second this will be a good value for those who are buying the condos taking over most of this Landmark. Groceries, pharmaceutical, & pet food at their doorstep. But at a cost to Toronto's cultural landscape.

Ok guys, I have to add my two cents about this mall. If you were to go to The Galleria Shopping…read moreCentre today for the first time, you would think the mall sucks. You would think that it's dated, dingy, and sometimes smells funny. However, if you have some past connection to this mall, like I do, you will find it strangely endearing. In a time when so many malls are owned by Cadillac-Fairview, and so many malls look exactly the same, it's kind of refreshing to see good old Galleria, still stuck in the 1970s and unapologetically so. I remember going to this mall as a child. I remember when the FreshCo was a Food City, and the Rexall was a Boots (yep, the drugstore chain from the UK, they actually had them in Canada, once upon a time). There was a Towers in this mall (not the record store, but a discount store similar to Target and Kmart). The mall area (not inside the stores, but the common area) looked exactly the same! I remember people would go there and hang out, but not in a sketchy-what-are-they-up-to kind of way, but in a building community and making friends kind of way. They were mostly older men. They wore slacks with their shirts tucked in. They'd drink coffee and talk about life. There was a discount store there (like a dollar store, but prices were more than a dollar) that sold the most unusual things. I saw a Jesus night light there. Twenty years later, I'm pretty sure I saw the same night light. I think it was in a different store, but definitely still in the same mall. Once in a while the parking lot would be closed off and there would be a carnival/fair. With games, rides, and cotton candy. They still do this occasionally. So I heard the mall is set for demolition and the place is going to be redone. I have very mixed feelings about this. I realize that revitalization will likely attract more customers and make the place more money (this kind of nostalgia does not pay bills), but I will really miss the old time charm. So even if you have no sentimental feelings for the mall, it's not that bad, it's a functional mall that's not too crowded, with a grocery store (FreshCo) and a drug store (Rexall).
