I got the paneer tikka masala and it was the worst I've ever had. Asked for the sauce to be mild and it was super spicy. The paneer was rock hard and dried out; the most disgusting thing I ever saw. So Shere-E-Punjab may be a staple for Swarthmore students venturing out for more exciting fare than Renato's and Cheng Hing's, and the food is pretty decent, but as previous reviews have intimated, they have some serious service issues. When they started offering delivery, my friends and I rejoiced - finally, decent food that didn't require a car for pickup! We ordered $40+ worth of different dishes, including several orders of naan (their naan is admittedly v. good, if overpriced). That was only the beginning of our adventure. Well over an hour later, we called, desperate, plaintive, begging for our food. They assured us that no, they had not forgotten, and yes, it would be coming. When? we asked. Soon, they replied. We could extract no further details. It was a full thirty minutes more before the delivery guy finally limped onto campus (understand that the restaurant is a ten minute drive away, fifteen max). After bestowing a generous tip on the good man who finally alleviated our starvation, we headed inside for a feast. We soon discovered that we had only received one order of naan, but been charged for everything we ordered. I don't know about the rest of you, but I pretty much hate eating Indian food if I can't scoop my food with bread. We called the restaurant, and they said they were sorry, all of their people had left and they could not come bring us the naan we were missing, but they would write down our names and info, and the next time we ordered they would give us the bread we paid for for free and a discount on the meal to repay us for the trouble. Well, maybe I'm an idiot for not getting something in writing, but I think you can guess what happened the next time I called and asked for my already-paid-for naan and discount. Not only did they not make good on the deal, they were nothing short of rude in responding to the suggestion that anyone at their establishment might ever have made such a promise. Now, their eggplant is amazing, their mango lassies are good and their chickpeas are extremely tasty in all forms. But they are unquestionably overpriced and poorly organized. A friend of mine and I tried this place on a whim and were very, very pleased. I've only had their lunch buffet but I'm sure it's indicative of their dinner menu. Great breadth of selections for lunch including all the usual suspects, plus fresh warm bread brought to the table. All the dishes appear and taste fresh and the quality of ingredients is apparent. Lovely decor that is a big step up from many similar places. Ample vegetarian options for the cruelty-free set but meated options as well. How this place escaped my notice for so long I'm not sure. "Friends" of mine knew about it, and yet they didn't tell me! Some friends... Went here for the lunch buffet and found it much better than Indian lunch buffet experience of yesterday (different place). $10 a head and fear not when you don't see naan on the buffet, they bring it to the table. I'm going to guess there were six entree choices, two or three sides, vegetable samosas, some other fried ball of veggie bits. I should really carry a pad and paper to these kinds of things. Like James mentioned there are lots of veggie friendly choices so it's a good place for meat/veggie discordant groups to go. I remember reading in a review of the place I tried yesterday that they played a muzak version of "The Final Countdown" and it must be something common amongst Indian restaurants because we were treated to a listening while we were here. My coworkers and I really like this place. We've come several times for their weekday lunch buffet, which features a somewhat limited albeit delicious array of Indian dishes. Everything is kept hot and the selections are sometimes different, but the taste is always consistent. I never remember what I'm eating once everything's on the plate, but you can't go wrong with an adventurous spirit! Their naan is really good but empties fast and oftentimes isn't restocked quickly. They also have a salad bar selection with one or two dessert options. You can of course order from the menu but we found the lunch buffet to be a better deal for sampling different flavors. The inside is spacious and empty enough during lunchtime but not desolate. Booth seating is great for conversations and larger tables for work luncheons. Service was polite. The bathroom is TINY for such a nice looking place though. The food is heavy, and it's easy to over-indulge, but overall a very solid place for lunch in Media. read more

I was lucky to find this place a few blocks from a funeral I was attending tonight. I'd arrived in the area and was hoping to grab dinner before the service began. I phone it in and it was ready in under 15 minutes. For $22.50 I got a large portion of Saag Paneer, one order of Naan, and one order of Raita. I paid slightly more than I would have liked to, but it was worth it. The raita was heavily flavored with cumin, which I love, and although it was a bit saltier than I was expecting, I found that saltiness to be an excellent balance for the naan bread. The naan was very large, soft, and fluffy; some of the best I've ever had. The saag paneer (creamed spinach with spices and cheese) was also delicious. There were many cheese cubes, and a lovely spiciness (moderate heat) that I'm not used to in saag dishes. It was terrific. My food came with a large complimentary portion of rice and peas. read more

Enjoyed the lunch buffet here yesterday. Lots of vegetarian options, but only 1 chicken dish (not including the tandoori chicken). Everything was well spiced (I find buffet offerings are often intentionally bland for 'lowest common denominator' appeal). The naan is delivered to your table vs. on the buffet line, but was some of the best I've had--hot, a bit fluffier than usual and delicious! I'm usually too full for dessert after Indian buffet, but I did try the one sweet offering they had and wished I hadn't--very strange texture and chalky taste. Shere-E-Punjab located in Media, P.a. is the kind of restaurant that puts off people from trying Indian cuisine a second time. Even for those of us with a life-long passion for Indian cuisine and ever ready to eat any kind of curry without complaint, Shere-E-Punjab food leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Our recent meal at Shere-E-Punjab was a chronicle of one disaster following another. Right from the moment we sat down, we hit one rough spot after another. Of course, we are no strangers to bad Indian restaurants. But usually even at the worst Indian restaurants we visit, at least one item - maybe it's the Tandoori Chicken or Alu Baigan or the humble Masala Chai - is nice. Shere-E-Punjab, however, belongs to that unfortunate category of Indian restaurants that has absolutely no reason for existence. Not a single item we had at this so-called Indian restaurant was even passable let alone tasty. Chicken Biryani was an utter travesty of a dish. Lacking any flavor or adequate rice, it was enough to drive an Indian to despair. Plain and simple, it was just partially cooked chicken. That too, just 2 small pieces. Naan is our favorite Indian bread and we usually gravitate to it when we dine out. The Naan we had at Shere-E-Punjab should easily count among the worst Naans we've had in over four decades. It was really over-cooked. But the booby prize for the worst dishes at Shere-E-Punjab were shared by Chicken Makhani and Palak Panneer. Although the menu describes Chicken Makhani as "Boneless tandoori chicken cooked in creamy tomato sauce and butter". It was a bland, bad-tasting under-spiced mess. Palak Paneer was equally pitiful. The Paneer (cheese) was way too hard and the overall effect was of chewing on a rubber at the end of a pencil. When we placed our order, we had requested that we'd like everything hot and spicy. But what landed on our table was extra mild. Was the chef on some kind of strike or protest? When we asked the female mgr. she stated - "just add some green chutney and it'll be OK!. Kulfi is a sweet dish from West Bengal in the Eastern part of India. One of our favorite sweets, we've had it countless times to great delight. But what appeared on our table was a little mass of white custard pudding in a little plastic container smaller than a golf ball. It was a vile, sour-tasting liquid that had as much resemblance to milk as mud has to caviar. Forget palatable. Much of the food at Shere-E-Punjab is barely tasteful. Watch out for your cholestrol level- everything is filled with butter. Our meal at Shere-E-Punjab in Media, P.a. was misery of an order that we'd seldom experienced at a dining table. - Yeah, It sucked that bad. A varied and quality selection of all-you-can-eat Indian food? Yes, please! Went here for lunch earlier today for the buffet. So delicious. In addition to a delicious selection of maybe five curries, both veg and non-veg, there was meat (tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, and kebab), a salad bar, lentil soup, nan bread, samosa, lentil patties, two types of biryani rice, sauteed cabbage, rice patties, various chutneys, raita yogurt, spicy sauce (recommended for those who want a bit more kick!). Oh yeah, and save room for a bite of mango pudding for dessert! We ate... and we ate... long past the psychological barrier of fullness... until we could physically longer eat. Everything was unique-tasting and well-spiced. For those seeking spice, I recommend the lamb vindaloo. An amazing deal at about $10 a person. What a satisfactory experience. Since I'm going to be spending a lot more time around Media this year, you can bet I'll be heading back. The service was friendly and attentive. Came to this location with high hopes as I often go to the Glen Mills location and find it rather enjoyable. I stopped by on my work break to get some food to go. Being vegan, I ordered dishes marked with a (V); the tandoori roti and the mixed vegetables. At first inspection it looked good so I went home to consume. When I got home, I saw that my tandoori roti was soaked in butter. Since it wasn't described to have butter on the menu, I gave the restaurant a call to see what the deal was. He told me that it always comes with butter and didn't offer anything to make it right. A simple apology would have been great or even an offer to replace the bread, but I got nothing. He just handled me and hung up. Needless to say, today is the last day I give this place my business. I would not recommend Shere-E-Punjab, Media to anyone looking for a pleasant dinner experience. read more

This little place is amazing. I walked in one day a bit too late for lunch (It was 2:59 and they close at 3:00pm) and the waiter insisted that I get food to go. I am so glad he did. The food was amazing. Apparently I caught the tail end of their lunch buffet. All of the food was fresh and vibrant. I had to wait a bit because they made me fresh naan. *swoon* I had the Chicken Tikka Masala, which is my personal favorite. I have eaten at many Indian restaurants, but this Chicken Tikka Masala was, by far, the best. The coloring was perfect. The flavors were spot on. It was divine. I can't wait to go back to experience the best of their service and food selection, but from what I did have (a huge takeout tray with fresh naan for $10.55) I can easily recommend it. read more

Amazing food. As a kosher person, I can't always find decent food - but this place is great. Incredible lamb, succulent chicken. The staff is kind and courteous and are very considerate to explain exactly what is in each dish and how spicy it is. They also deliver, and their delivery service is fast, accurate, and comes in great, reusable, leak-proof containers. This is now my favorite restaurant in Media. Coming from the Bay Area, my wife and I have lofty expectations. Ambiance was nice for an Indian restaurant, waitstaff was awkwardly inattentive. Food really stood out for being bad - the marsala had too much tomato, and the Vindaloo was the exact same base without the cream. Shrimp had unsavory taste of iodine. I recently went here with the hubby and a friend and we got the vegetable pakora to start- which was like veggies and hushpuppies all in one- YUM! Then we each got an entree: chicken tikki masala, lamb roganjosh, and lamb vindaloo. Each dish was superb, authentic, and exactly what it should be. The sauces for each were so good I wanted to drink them. Had I saved any room in my tummy, I just might have! The place was reasonably priced and the staff/service was just okay. Tried this restaurant for the first time and it was delicious. I loved everything I ate. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the selection on the buffet was perfect. There was an equal sampling of meat and vegetarian dishes and I was able to fill my plate with fragrant and savory vegetable creations. Fresh, perfect naan (I'm sure there's a legit tandoor back there), creamy and spicy curries and decent selection of drinks. The rice really stands out too. I visited for dinner with a large group on Wednesday, December 21. Service was good. The table shared a couple of sampler appetizers and those were good. I ordered chicken tikka masala, which I believe is "Punjab special masala" or something like that on their menu. The sauce was sweet like lots of sugar had been added, and that wasn't a good thing. I've never had tikka masala that tasted like that. We also got the bread basket. It was fine, nothing special. Bottom line, this place is just okay. I've had better Indian food elsewhere. read more

The restaurant has moved from their old place to the new one. The new restaurant looks very modern and the food menu is refreshing. We had been there with few friends of our on an impromptu dinner night. So I was eating vegetarian that day..ordered in Papdi chaat, bread basket, Navrattan Korma and Veg Biryani. The chaat was fresh and so was the bread. The Korma was good nothing spectacular or special. The Biryani was ok..not that great..but it is palatable... Expansion Ruins a Favorite We and one or two couples have eaten here regularly over the years. Great food, BYOB, with a pleasant, busy, bistro feel on a Saturday night. In expanding into the building next door, we think they have misjudged, and ruined the place. Other than the low lighting and claret walls, the dining area could be any mid-range restaurant serving any type of food in any part of America. Add to that, $18 for what seems like a smaller portion, and waiters stopping by at the table every five minutes to where we just wanted to ask them 'Please, leave us alone, stop asking if we need anything!', we left disappointed. I wish them all the best, and perhaps others will like it, but we are now looking for an authentic Indian to visit. read more

Had ordered carryout from here once before, and maybe popped in with the wife for a quick dinner shortly after we moved into the area, but that was some years back. Went on Sunday morning for brunch with my wife and our 3 month old (who slept through the meal in her stroller). What a feast. Service was polite, attentive and fast. Food was fresh, hot, flavorful and unique. Price was great. Being of Indian descent, I am careful with my Indian food and there are alas more subpar attempts then real hits around here. This place wowed us. The buffet had both traditional and unique choices, and everything was so good. Not overly spicy but not bland either. Tandoori chicken and naan were both excellent. Love this place! Nice fully appointed bar with 12 craft beers on tap. The food was fantastic, and in the lower price range in Media considering they are right on State St. Especially on a Saturday night. Atmosphere is clean, open, and modern. Staff was efficient and friendly. We really liked Patty, who was our bartender and server. She helped us navigate the menu and let us pick our "spice level" on each dish on a scale from 1 to 5. We had the cauliflower appetizer that came with 2 sauces. I will order my own serving next time. It's that good, not sharing. The house special Tikki Masala was all it was hyped up to be. Husband and I dined here last night. It's very nice inside, cool bar and warm, comfy feel to the place. But it just didn't cut it. It took forever for the server to arrive and take our drink order, and the appetizer arrived before the drinks. We ordered the lamb samosas, and only one of them was indeed a lamb samosa, the other was a strange potato concoction. When brought to their attention, the staff brought a new order. The entrees were mediocre. Husband's shahi paneer and my malai kofta were exactly the same entree but for the cheese and veggie balls. Exactly.The. Same. Sauce. The veggie balls were slightly larger than a quarter, and there were only 4 of them in the large vat of sauce. To order a second round of drinks, we had to gesture wildly to get the server's attention. I've been stalking the suburban Philly area for good Indian food for over a year and last week I hit the jackpot. My boo and I went to Shere-E-Punjab last Saturday night for dinner, we brought a bottle of wine and were ready to hunker down and enjoy some saucy Indian goodness. We arrived at about 7:30 and were seated right away. With us, the dining room was about 3/4 full. They seated us at a table for two but the table itself was miniature. Just with the bottle of wine, water glasses, and wine glasses, and place setting it was kind of precarious. Once our naan and entrees showed up there was seriously no room and was tough to pour wine and share our food. With that being said, the limited space was my only complaint. The food was awesome, albeit a tad mild for me: when asked how much spice we wanted when ordering the waitress talked us out of our answer of "hot" , so we went for "medium"...we should have stuck to our guns, we'll know for next time. The portions were pretty small, but that's nothing new with Indian restaurants. The garlic naan was light and crispy and they replenished our rice without hesitation. Vegetable samosas were flavorful and crispy without being greasy. and the clincher for me was that they had Kheer (rice pudding), a hidden gem of Indian cuisine. We'll definitely be back! read more

My partner and I shared the lamb sasmosa which was tasty, but a little dry, and delish cauliflower with chickpea coating (tastes one hundred percent better than it sounds). I am very new to Indian food and both of my experiences were with Shere-E-Punjab. The food is delicious! I love the chicken vindaloo. I've had both the standard naan and the garlic naan and they are both very good. I love the rice they give you as well. I also tried the Mango Lassi and was very happy I did! It was delicious. I will definitely be coming back! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the service. It could have been better. read more

Delicious food! I took my husband here for his birthday. He's not an adventurous eater and usually sways away from anything that isn't burger or Italian. But he LOVED it. All the food was deliciously spiced and smelled incredible. The place is small but I've never had an issue getting a seat pretty quickly. The food is fairly priced and you get a huge amount of food for the price. We were eating leftovers for several days. The staff could use a lesson in smiling. By far the best Indian place in my experience, an opinion shared by majority of friends who've tried this place. The quality and flavor of their food is unmatched. Especially recommend getting the rich creamy dishes such as chicken vindaloo (spicy) or tiki masala (medium), otherwise lamb korma for a mild dish.
