A bright spot in this past challenging winter was finding in January the Mod India Restaurant at 475 Germantown Pike in Lafayette Hill. The food on my first visit shortly after it opened was wonderful. Against all restaurant odds, it has gotten better with each subsequent visit as winter turned to spring. Whether your preference is meat, vegetarian, a combination, you will find more than one appetizer, main dish, and dessert to please you. Some of the choices created by the creative, friendly chef, Ashok----who by the way stopped at our table and answered questions----are: ---A Shrimp appetizer on top of the poori---Something new to me but something I will want again. ----Tender, well-seasoned lamb chops, unequaled in quality and flavor, and better than any I have ever had. ----Aloo Tikki Chaat---- if chat interests you. Affectionately called Indian Street Food. It would be welcome on my street anytime. The restaurant is very convenient and accessible to Northwest Philadelphia---Chestnut Hill Mount Airy ---and the near suburbs. Buut the restaurant is well worth a longer trip if you are not nearby. The staff is friendly without being intrusive. They know just when to be there for you and when not to be. The check will not break the bank. Another excellent dinner. My in-laws come monthly and whenever we visit from Chicago, we go with them. The server is friendly and very helpful in selecting new items to try. This time I had the dal makhani and the tandoori chicken. The chicken was perfectly seasoned without being spicy and was quite juicy. The sauce served on the side was delicious. My husband and I went there Saturday night. The ambience was wonderful. From the moment we walked in till we were sat down to taking our order, bringing us our appetizer, then bringing us our food. Checking on us periodically. The food was amazing. We had the appetizer chicken Samosa excellent. Then we had the paneer tikka masala excellent. What a hidden gem! We have lived in the area far too long to have missed out on this restaurant. The food was excellent - we had the Chicken 65 appetizer which was so flavorful, not too spicy, and had a lovely texture - just a little crunch on the edges. For entrees, my husband ordered the goat biryani, which he declared was the best he had ever eaten (and he spent a lot of time in India), and I had the tandoori chicken, which was delicious. We also had two types of naan and both were excellent. As delicious as the food was, the service was just as great. We stopped here on our way back from the beach and were so glad we did! The restaurant is tucked on the Route 1 side of a hotel, and from the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel completely welcome. My friend and I ordered the Sizzling Tandoori Platter, Chicken Tikka, garlic naan, and raita sauce--and everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. We only wish we had room to try more! If you're not sure what to order, check out the photos on their website--they'll make your mouth water. I stopped in here on a whim as I was leaving Wegman's and was hungry. It's located in a sparsely attended hotel complex which used to house a Hooter's. Good burger memories. I almost walked out when I stepped in and saw a small smattering of patrons. But I persisted and was very glad that I did. You don't see many Indian places with alcohol, but I decided to tea tote tonight. Ordered some Naan bread and the lamb kebab. I requested that the lamb be cooked medium as too many times I've gotten well done shards when I didn't make the request. The Naan was melt in your mouth. The lamb Kebab was served table side still sizzling fajita style. It was so tender and has a trailing kick to it. The rice provided and grilled vegetables was a perfect pairing. I did not enjoy the food at all although the service was good and all the staff were very nice. This is in a strange location, connected to a hotel and the restaurant is very dark inside. We had the dal makani and massaman curry. We ordered them both medium spicy however they both were extremely mild and the hot sauces provided did little to improve this. Cute little restaurant with nice decor, not what I'd typically see at an Indian restaurant. Food was good and service was great. The waiter was very helpful in helping my friends and I select our entrees. We got 3 different curry main entrees with 3 different proteins and shared all of it. The lamb was surprisingly tasteful without that typical "gamey" taste. The shrimps were good in size and texture. The chicken was good, hard to mess up chicken. We shared Veggie Samosas which were very flavorful and the dipping sauce that came with it were impressive, one spicy and one sweet. We also got Roti and Naan for the table. What a pleasant dining experience! The evening that my husband and I came for dinner they had live music and a great singer. It was a nice way to experience the culture while eating the food. I had lamb Tikka which was delicious and my husband had a coconut curry chicken dish. Both were delicious but the portion size should have been bigger for the price (which is why I give them 4 stars and not 5. Also it was my birthday and the host was so kind to bring out traditional fried donuts with a delicious syrup-so good-I can't remember the name of it though! This was really standout food which I wasn't expecting! The restaurant is in a bit of an odd location kind of hidden in a hotel but it was relatively easy to find with signage. I tried it out and had to go back a couple weeks after I enjoyed it so much. I've tried a few different vegetarian items and enjoyed them all. I've only done take out and picked up but the food has been ready quickly and easy to grab and have at home. I'd recommend the saag, really good flavor! Can't wait to come back. read more

Recently ordered takeout from the newest Indian restaurant in the area and felt it was overall okay --- probably a solid 3.5, but rounding to a 4 because BF really liked it and ultimately, I want to support this restaurant that opened during such a difficult time. We were able to order online, and I appreciated that the website is sorted by sauce (ex: tikka masala, korma, etc) and then allowed you to choose from a variety of proteins to add, so you can customize your order. BF arrived to pick up the food at the designated time, but wound up waiting a few extra minutes because the place was so busy. As far as the food, the highlight was the fried cauliflower appetizer which was absolutely phenomenal (thanks, prior Yelp reviewers!). The garlic naan was also delicious. For our entrees, we tried the saag paneer and the chicken korma. Both were a little underseasoned and bland --- and I honestly usually feel that Indian food is a little too spicy for me. Based on prior reviews, it seems like it was probably an off-night, so we plan to give them another chance. For what it's worth, I wound up adding some Indian spices at home to good effect. As others have mentioned, the portions are sizable and we had enough leftover to eat for lunch the next day. read more

Interesting location. Literally in what used to be a hotel bar/lounge. Lots of parking, well designed dining room, excellent repurpose of an untapped income property. Bathrooms are managed by the hotel, and impressively clean. The food wasn't bad, but also not exactly memorable. I love me some Indian food, but this isn't a place I'd say is in my top 5 (or 10). (#1 Karma in Puyallup, WA; #2 Hot & Chili in San Clemente, CA; #3 Monsoon in Kihei on Maui, HI) But, the food came out hot. My very mild mahkani was remade to a level 4 spicy. The beer was great. Service was on top of it. (Very nice staff) If I was taking someone new to Indian food, this would be a good place. Also, great for a friend's catch-up meal; easy ambiance for talking. read more

The newest Indian restaurant in the area is also the tastiest! We ordered fried cauliflower (similar to gobi Manchurian), veg Hakka noodles, chicken saag, chicken tikka masala, and a kids paneer pizza. All were fantastic and flavorful. I was especially impressed by the cauliflower and the saag, both of which were fantastic. Prices are comparable to other Indian places but the portions are huge. (See photo with a pasta box for comparison.) everyone in the family was able to make two meals of the order. I'm excited to go back and try some of the unique items on the menu that I haven't seen at other Indian restaurants. Despite all the great reviews, I was very skeptical to try mod restaurant. I always assumed that it wouldn't be authentic Indian food and I was proven wrong. We could smell the amazing Indian food smell the moment we parked our car in the parking lot. I knew the food would be great the moment I smelled it, and when I saw that it was only Indians sitting in the restaurant. We order fried idli, dahi puri and chili chicken. Dahi puri and chili chicken were amazing!!!! I wouldn't order the fried idli again. For entree we went with the basic chicken tikka masala and was great but I wish it was a little bit more spicy. This place was an amazing find over the last weekend. Was craving for some Indian food after visiting Longwood Gardens and I am so glad to find it. Besides the regular menu they also have a lunch menu ( mini meals menu) that is totally worth it. I ordered Karampodi idli , Chettinad Salmon curry from the regular menu and special parathas with bhi a curry from mini meals menu. Everything has different flavors and very freshly cooked. The service is amazing and the place looks awesome too. Ended with Orange Kulfi dessert and it was really good as well. Overall great experience with food, service, ambiance. My fiancé and I were traveling back from a day trip in Delaware and had a craving for Indian food. We searched on our route and found Mod Indian. This restaurant is attached to a hotel. So if you pull in to one side of the parking lot you cannot see the restaurant. Continue on around the side and you will find the entrance to Mod Indian. The restaurant is beautiful inside. Modern and luxe. Comfortable booth/table seating and a nice looking bar. It isn't huge inside but seems they can accommodate larger parties if needed. Service was very professional and kind. I appreciate good service- it adds to the experience! The menu offered all the standards. Nothing too unique or unusual. My fiancé and I love Gobhi Manchurian and order it everywhere we go. Mod's Gobhi Manchurian was delicious. Sweet, spicy and sour. Very crunchy which we love. We ordered Garlic Naan which was very good. Pronounced garlic flavor, slightly charred in places- yum! I ordered the Saag Paneer and found it one of the best I've had. Very flavorful and not too spicy. My fiancé ordered a goat dish (I can't remember the name right now). While he found the flavor phenomenal the goat was -very- tough. The meat was still on the bone as well. This was of course very disappointing and he took most of it to go home as it was too much a struggle to eat at the restaurant. We also ordered the special Biryani served in a clay pot covered in naan. This was a $5 up charge from the menu Biryani. I would skip this. The flavor wasn't all that great and because it is made with a lid of naan the rice remains quite wet. Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy this Biryani dish. We ended our meal on a high note with Orange Kulfi and Carrot Halwa (one of the best I've ever had!). To drink I ordered a Mango Lassi which was quite fresh and tasty. My fiancé ordered the Fresh Lime Soda which we have tried other places. It's usually fresh lime juice in soda water. This must have been a more traditional drink which included mint, salt and some spice mixed in. It was very unique but neither of us liked it more than taking a few sips to try it. The best Indian is on the east coast at Mod India. Thoughtful dishes prepared with excellent choices of spices and delicate touches of warmth and love. My partner and I raved about the selection of curries and biryanis on the menu. I had the veggie coconut curry, excellent all around; my fiancé had a lamb curry that she said was out of this world. This is a really nice restaurant. Super clean, and a nice modern style seating area. I asked the server what he would get. I got a chettinad vegan style, I was told that it's curry with vegetables in it. I asked for it spicy. I also got a sizzling tandoor platter. It comes with chicken, seafood, and lamb with some vegetables. I got a side of naan. The naan was the best ever. The sizzling platter was pretty good. The salmon and the shrimp were a bit overcooked. But everything else was great. The chettinad was something to be desired. The curry had good flavor and was nice and spicy, but the vegetables were not fresh. I could taste freezer burn as though the vegetables came from a bag from the freezer, were cooked in a microwave, and then added to the curry. read more
