I received a personal text message from the owner of the salon when he discovered I'd changed my previous rating of five stars to three, accusing me of being prompted to alter it online and for being bitter. I'd like to set the record straight here. The reason I updated my review six months after my last visit was because at the time, I was updating ALL old reviews on Yelp to ensure they reflected my current feelings. His was not the only one changed that day. Under no circumstances was I prompted to change it - my opinions are always my own, and I pride myself on that, especially when it comes to Yelp, because I want to make sure whenever stumbles upon a business I've reviewed they can be guaranteed to know I'm not sugar coating anything but also not being mean for no real reason (I believe made evident by the fact that I still gave them and still am giving them a three-star rating rather than one). I began to feel uncomfortable going to their salon - it's great if their other long-term customers did not, and I applaud them for being less self-conscious than I. The other stylists, though still generally friendly and chatty with me, just had a different attitude towards me, and as I mentioned in my previous update, when my stylist departed from the salon, I didn't return. I had no clue she'd be opening her own home salon, I didn't know I'd EVER get a cut from her again, but I still hesitated to return to Shep Studio because she was the only one who was genuinely kind to me (note: genuinely. No one, aside from one stylist, has EVER been rude to me because they've maintained professionalism in front of customers). Did I know I would get a solidly great haircut? Absolutely. There's one stylist there I wouldn't ever see again, but the rest are really excellent at their craft. But the thought of being there for an hour with, essentially, strangers, felt really discomforting. I was especially put off that, rather than attempting to absolve the situation, Shep sent me an accusatory text with a real parting shot at the end ("sorry for your bitterness hope you can find happiness"). As a business owner myself, I know you always have to treat the customer as though he/she is always right, even if it seems unfair, even if you think it's unfounded, even if you think that person is straight up wrong. I'm a bitter-free, happy individual who simply wanted to be honest. Not much else to look into besides that. Shep Studio might be the perfect salon for you - they offer neck massages, have nice massage chairs while your hair is washed, (generally) expert stylists, and a very hip/contemporary ambience. It's a little on the pricey side, but their newer stylists charge less than the seasoned ones. read more

Shep's Studio is one of those places where you can ask the stylist to just give you a cut that looks awesome, and that's exactly what you'll get. They truly know what they're doing. I'm aware of the rigorous process it takes to be accepted as a stylist at Shep's, which is why you can't go wrong with seeing anyone there. I love the hip feel of the salon: urban chic. A cut without color usually starts around $35 and up, depending on the stylist. That's not too pricey considering you're getting a fabulous style. Shep is a master stylist, but I am devoted to Patrick. He knows how to cut curly hair. I have complete faith in Patrick, I always walk out looking amazing, with a cut that grows out beautifully. I got my hair cut and colored by Lauren. She is THE sweetest girl but I did NOT get the look I wanted. I told her I wanted a natural ombré and that I wanted my hair NOTICEABLY light. I told her I'd go blonde if I could. During the process I even showed her a picture of the color I saw on the magazine and she said that it would be pretty light. I'm satisfied with my cut but you look at the picture and tell me if it looks like a blonde ombré. It does not. She explained at the end that she can't make it go any lighter bc my hair is so dark to begin with. I've had ombré that turned out better and a LOT lighter than this out of a box before. She should have told me that before she started that she can't make it very light. The reason why you go to the salon is to get things done exactly the way you want by a PROFESSIONAL. This was my first time getting my hair professionally colored and I regret paying to get my hair colored as well as I could have done by myself. I have tiger stripes on the side of my face ( which I told her exactly what I didn't want) and indoors, you can't really see the color at all. Waste of money. Shes a sweet girl so I hope she learns how to color better. She did offer to color my hair back to black but the color and cut had already taken up 3 1/2 hours so I could not be there any longer. For years I wanted a pixie cut, but was always told I was too heavy, or I didn't have the right face shape, or my hair was too thick, etc. etc. When I went to Shep Studio and confirmed that I really did indeed want to chop it all off, Patrick (and other stylists who overheard the conversation) were so positive and validating! It was magical; I almost wanted to cry. Sure enough, Patrick worked with some factors that might make SOME pixie cuts look bad on me, to give me the most complimentary haircut I've ever had in 24 years on this planet. So friendly, so knowledgeable, so helpful! Before that haircut, I had worked with David, who I didn't ask for a pixie so he isn't categorized with the previously mentioned hater-haircutters, and he was very knowledgeable, very helpful, so friendly, and a great stylist. I highly recommend David as well! I just moved from Provo to Salt Lake but I will keep coming back every month and a half or so just so I can keep my hair looking amazing! I've never received so many compliments in my life :D Finally, the note about the price: depending on the stylist, the range is from $35 to $70, without tip or products. That is really very fair! It's hard to reconcile in Provo, but you're getting a cut quality equivalent to somewhere like LA or NYC, so truly, I feel like these are very moderately priced cuts. read more

Alright, I've never been to a "real" salon so I have nothing to compare this against except your average corner hair cut place. But next to those, this place rocks! This morning my hair was past my shoulder blades, now it's pixie style, and I LOVE it! I knew I wanted to go to somewhere more professional for a cut this new and drastic and Shep's sounded great. I called and scheduled an appointment. Upon arrival the front desk staffer took my coat and offered me my choice of soda or water. I was promptly seated and introduced to my stylist, Twix. He was super friendly and made me feel right at ease as we talked about my hair options. When we decided upon the best look for me he took me back to get my hair washed. It was awesome. I mean, they seat you in a chair with built in massage AND they massage your scalp during washing. Heaven? Yes! Once done with the washing Twix cut, dried and styled my hair. He was sure to tell me along the way why he was cutting things the way he was, exactly what products he was using on my hair and why, and in general making pleasant conversation. The end results are truly fantastic and my experience there was welcoming and pleasant. The place is bright and hip, everyone in there is so friendly and they really know what they're doing. After seeing lots of friends with amazing hair who get their hair done at Shep, I convinced my husband to take my son here. I REALLY wanted to love this place, but it just didn't live up to the hype. Was it a bad haircut? No. Was it worth $50 to cut an 8 year olds hair? Not at all. It was no better than the haircuts I've paid $15 for. I couldn't wait to see him come home with something amazing and cool, and was surprised and disappointed to see him show up with just your typical little boy haircut from dollar cuts. From what I understand certain stylists here are better than others, but I doubt we will be back to try the others. read more

I made an appointment who I thought was a Senior Stylist. I made a point to ask for and experienced stylist. I came in with long hair and wanted a wedge cut.I showed a picture of what I wanted. I wish I could post pictures. My hair is ruined. I left very upset,. Shep wanted to protect his stylist and told me that my cut was like the picture. He stated he had great stylists. I was unreasonable and a upset client. I can't explain what I look like. My husband was shocked and wanted to find another shop to fix this mess I have as a hair cut. Chopped. longer on one side. Shep studio: where they listen and don't judge! That's my radio tag-line for the studio. With jokes aside, I feel great about my haircut each time I'm there. Erica rocks! I never have that week-long awkward stage where it looks like I just got a haircut, which can be difficult for a men's cut. I also appreciate that even though it feels like a pretty chic place, you don't have to walk out with a totally strange post-modern haircut. I've had more "hip" and also conventional haircuts and they both turned out great. Also the stylists there are all really positive and friendly-- good vibes here. Took my son in for a hair cut with Candice. He had never been to Candice before, but we showed her some pictures of the cut he wanted. She looked at the pictures carefully and the cut turned out perfect. She asked me if I liked it, which I appreciated as a mom, and she asked my son if he wanted it any shorter, after she cut it to a good length, and he was happy with it. I drive down from SLC to get my hair cut by Shep. He is a true artist and like any artist some like his art and some don't. I love his style because he 1. tailors the cut to my risk tolerance, preferences, and personality 2. he knows how to cut Asian hair 3. he really loves doing short hair styles. I've only found pleasant and professional employees there. I would highly recommend his studio for those who want attention, personality, and style for their cut. I just moved to Utah from out of state, and I was looking for a more modern hair salon with high quality, not an old-lady salon or cheap place. Shep is amazing and would fit in well in a larger city. It has great decor, friendly staff, and everyone there has great style and great hair (that's a good indicator for me!) I saw Stephanie and she was lovely. Easy to talk to (a big plus), listened carefully and made sure I was comfortable with her plan. I trusted her right away and she did an absolutely beautiful cut on my shoulder length, fine hair. The only reason why I gave it a four star instead of a five is because although the atmosphere is professional and stylish, it could be warmer (not that the staff was rude or anything, because they weren't. I didn't feel un-welcomed but I didn't exactly feel like they wanted me there, either. BUT. The haircuts I got were fantastic.) The first time I went to Shep Studio, I'll admit that I felt super out-of-place since it was such a sophisticated hair salon; but at the same time, it was reassuring to see that they knew what they were doing. I got my hair cut by Lauren both times and I was thrilled with the outcomes. Unlike the previous hairstylists at other salons, she actually listened to me when I told her what I wanted and then proceeded to cut my hair the way I wanted, except it turned out even better than I expected. Twix is the Hair Whisperer! He knew exactly how my hair would react to the cut that I wanted. He took 15 inches off and I am in love with how it turned out.
