I canceled service and it took 63 days and an FCC and a BBB complaint, plus the threat of going to court to get my unused money refunded to me. All they did was lie constantly, make up dates that the check was sent and blame everything on the USPS. This is a pattern for this company and not an exception. When I had their "service" it always scrambled every single day and they refused to give a credit for it. They just bill you and you tow the company line. They have almost a complete monopoly over internet in radford va, with only a few limited options outside of them. The internet speed feels throttled constantly, they consistently take over an hour to let you speak to someone, and they change plans without telling you, so you end up paying more for less. read more

Just found out if you live in Christiansburg, VA you only pay $80 for 1.2Gbps download speeds but if you live 10 minutes down the road in Radford, VA 1Gbps cost $200 and the $80 plan only has download speeds of 150Mbps. Ive always had issues with this pricing but it was the same throughout the whole area. I will be immediately looking into other options even if it means going to satellite or hotspot! read more

I moved to Radford VA from CT where I had COX Cable with 50Mbps at around 40$ a month with unlimited data. Shentel charges 2x that for 50Mbps with a data cap of only 500GB! i have 2 roommates that are a college student and a teacher that both use the internet for various things. I have various devices such as iPhones, iPads, Macs, AppleTV, and an Xbox One S that gets updates constantly... streaming Netflix and Hulu on most of these devices. well with this data cap of only 500GB we hit or even go over the limit costing me more every month. I looked on Shentel's site and now they have "Unlimited data" oh but thats 30$ plus the 80$ I'm paying already! I also can't get any other service here! I called numerous ISPs and they al say they don't service the area because of Shentel! MONOPOLY!!! NOT HAPPY! read more

I wish I could give half a star. Truest awful speeds, takes forever to get a person for customer service. We purchased the 50gb plan for the outrageous fist if 119.00 a month. Never saw higher than 30, never. Could not see paying that much so downgraded to 15gig. We now get about an average of 6. Have had the modem replaced 3 times. They will not add it that the basic infrastructure is obsolete. Why should they though. Shentel is the only provider we have available. Get dish or century link wireless, you will be better off. read more

Solid provider. Switched from all points broadband which was atrocious and now with shentel can play rocket league without bouncing all over the place. Prices have improved in recent years as well. read more

Rumor has it that Shentel pays the City of Radford to ensure that they remain the only satisfactory option. Verizon does have the capability of providing internet in Radford, but only up to 6mgps. Anyways, the service is terribly inconsistent. Sometimes it runs smoothly and other times it lags. Also, my bill has never been the same since I got the service. They like to add on their bullshit fees. If I were you I wouldn't even consider moving to Radford because of this company. The internet prices are through the roof. I would rather live 20min away in Blacksburg and get Xfinity. read more

Awful. Just awful. I got my service after moving to the area in April 2015, few problems until November 2015, then the bottom fell out in December 2015, I started having phone problems it would just go out, couldn't make or receive calls, then all my services went out, phone, cable and internet, I would call and they would tell me my modem was off line, they would try to get it back, couldn't, had a tech come out and he said you know this is just going to be a problem that you have to deal with while we are having cold weather. I'm like what, I want internet, cable and phone year around not just when it's warm. Since Dec 18th I have had more days without service than I have had days with service. I called to get a credit and was giving the run around, was told that when I called in I only told them I didn't have internet, I told them I always said I don't have any services at all. So the lady then says have you had a time when you service was off for several days or was it just off for a few hours, I said a few days I didn't have services but it's mostly on and off all through out the day. She said well we can't credit you for the days that you actually had some service you have to be with out service for 24 hours. I argued and argued and she would not budge. I told her I signed up for services 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year and when I want to watch TV, make a call or search the web I want to do it, I don't want to wait until I have service, I said I'm paying for 24 hours a day not here and there every now again service. Finally tells me I can get a credit for 6 days. If you are looking at Shentel don't do it. Worst service and the customer service is the awful. read more

This is the worst internet company you could possibly find. Shentel charges too much to begin with for the service and quality they provide. They always say you go over your data limit, even at the biggest plan you can buy. It caters to college students with roommates I assume, because no average family in the area they provide service could afford their services. We pay almost $200 a month and sometimes more. I have 5mbps (do not confuse with MEGABYTES) and their Advanced HD TV package. My last bill was 130.00 dollars. The price is completely outrageous and I feel like I'm being overcharged. I would suggest getting their lowest mbps package which is 3mbps (still 40 bucks a month!), but Shentel has wised up to that, and looks like they are starting to put datacaps on their internet. Here is a tip for you people out there, drop your cable and get Netflix and Hulu, that will drop your cable bill by over 50 dollars a month, and if you have Shentel, 70+ a month. And if you are unfortunate enough to only have Shentel, never do automatic payment; Shentel subtly hikes the price of your bill each month, and you never know what your bill will be each month. Also, watch out for their spam package of internet, landline phone, and cable. They will call from telemarketing numbers occasionally trying to get you to get this "deal." They will tell you your current price will drop if you get the landline with your cable and internet. So you agree to the package, the cable guys installs your landline, then two weeks later you get a call wanting you to sign a two-year contract. If you move during this timeframe and violate your contract, the price of cable, internet, and landline will be chared to your account at normal prices making your bill substantially larger than it originally was. read more

Save yourself the headache and hassle of trying this rinky-dink outfit. When we originally signed up for cable/internet it was a decent deal. About $57/month for very basic (14 channels) plus unlimited internet usage at OK speeds (good for streaming with minimal buffering but not too good for gaming). This was not an introductory deal, by the way. There would be intermittent service interruptions (3-4 per year) and spotty internet service during inclement weather, but for the price it was tolerable. About 18 months ago they switched to digital cable, which required self-installation of a small cable box. The boxes we were sent would not properly initialize and the initial calls to customer service could not fix the issue. They would only tell us that they were having issues with some of the boxes and were working on a fix. In the meantime we were steadily losing channels since we were still stuck on the analog signal. Finally Shentel was able to get our converters to initialize but no bill credit for the time we were without the ability to watch tv. Additionally, they continued to incrementally raise their rates (currently $70/mo), AND they implemented a limit on internet usage. This meant that moderate streaming (Netflix, YouTube, Spotify) resulted in overages almost every month. Their explanation: we have to be fair to all our customers. So instead of using the rate increases to increase their bandwidth and improve their network, they pocketed the money and continue to provide shoddy service. I dumped them and went with a truly local wireless internet provider and satellite tv. It costs a little more than Shentel ($90/month for both), but I also get more (70+ channels and unlimited internet usage). read more

Had problems with slow speeds with Century Link. Only tech support I could talk to was overseas. Refused to give me a phone number of someone relatively local who could fix my problem. Went from slow speeds to my service being accidently disconnected for 8 days, did not get any interest in my problem until I call the sales dept and asked them when my contract was up. Only then did I get any excitement about fixing the issue. I fired them and am thrilled with Shentel. I am paying for 10 Meg and I am getting a little faster. With CL I was paying for 10 and getting 5 or 6 on the BEST of days, typically 3-4. First day with Shentel my internet flaked out, I called tech support and talked with a guy in Lynchburgh!! He fixed everything up over the network in about 5 minutes. Hasn't sneezed since then. Best of all it's the same price with no contract. Do yourself a favor and check Shentel out. LOCAL support is huge. If you are serious about Buying Local, these guys are it, not the big boys. read more

Shentel has unbelievably incompetent technicians. Two days into having their service, a tech came out to install the downstairs neighbor's modem. To do so, he unplugged the coaxial line that runs to my modem. I'm astonished at how negligent the technician could be to unplug another customer's internet service that was installed two days prior. I'm not one week into having Shentel's service and I have already lost complete faith in this company. I would never recommend these guys, but unfortunately, most of us in the area are stuck with this imbecilic company as they are a virtual monopoly. I can't believe my hard earned money is going towards supporting this sad excuse of an ISP. The customer service was serviceable, but as I have also worked in an ISP call center, it was unforgivable how little troubleshooting was done before setting an appointment. If she had been working at the company I worked at, she would have been written up for that call. Even worse is how obviously poor her training was. Even a layman can point out that "co-axle" is not the type of line used with modems... This app won't let me rate less than 1 star, so 1 star it is. read more
