Everything was pretty good - especially the vanilla Swiss cake roll slice - would recommend! The lychee mooncake ($4.50/ea) was a miss - this was a bit of a splurge for a tiny portion, and I didn't enjoy it. Keep in mind that some of their mooncakes also have peanuts, which isn't explicit unless you look at the bottom of the packaging. Stopped by when I was in San Jose. It was a little before noon when I dropped in, but they were already out of some of my favorites. I like the way the store is set up that allows you room to roam and check out everything, as well as how the workers do not bother you while you take everything in. I ended up getting a chicken roll, a garlic bread slice, and a roll cake. The garlic bread was by far the best and was super flavorful, but all of the food was good. It looks and tastes buttery and sugary but the bun is lighter. It satisfies my Chinese bakery cravings. I told my family 2 items each but we all picked out 3. They sell cakes and bread. Bread is super addictive. I usually scout out the shelves first. Don't come too late. They run out. I called 3 different Sheng Kee bakerys at the last minute, trying to find a taro cake for my mom's birthday. This one happened to have it and they were nice enough to save it for me. I stopped by within 15 mins to pick it up. The woman working the counter told me something like how they just made the cake today, so it was frozen. I asked her, if it was ok to eat tonight since it was frozen and she said yes. It didn't make sense to me how a cake could have been made that day but be frozen so I didn't think anything of it and bought it anyways. I stored it in the fridge and when it was time to cut the cake....yep, it was frozen. It would have been nice if she told me to leave the cake out before eating or given me some instruction. Interesting and unique bakery goods coming from a white man's perspective. I was staying at a nearby hotel that didn't have breakfast so I was looking for a quick bite to eat nearby. This place caught my eye. Went in and was taken back by all the amazing sites and smells. Each item individually packed and in bright display cases if we were looking at wedding rings. I watched a woman behind me rush in and grab a try by the door. I copied her and started grabbing anything that caught my eye. Amazing soft and chewy textures coming from all baked goods. How time flies, I can't believe it's been seven years since my last review of this spot. Sheng Kee cakes are still the default option for all family birthdays, but the quality of the taro cake especially is no longer the same. In fact, it's become a birthday tradition to talk about how the cake experience gets a bit worse every year. Factors that have been called to attention include cake price going up, lack of purple frosting, sponge being dry on the inside, taro filling being too grainy, and noticeable cracks up and down the sides. The 2024 taro cake was especially disappointing as it had cracks throughout the frosting which we later found out was due to the full cake being formed from multiple slices of taro cake put together. Every year we say that we should get cake from a different place but every year we default back to this one. As far as price goes, the taro is the most expensive full size cake sold here but compared to the market price for a cake of the same size it's on the more affordable side. I do miss the signature purple frosting but I can turn a blind eye to everything except for the fact that full cakes are being reformed from individual cake slices. read more

Sheng Kee has been my go-to the past few months. My mom and I always come back for more of the Taiwan Toast when we run out. It's probably one of my favorite breads right now. The chew is so nice, and it's so consistent! A couple of my other favorite items would be the cocktail buns, the pork buns, the hot dog buns, the pork floss buns and also the whole wheat Taiwan toast. The service here is pretty quick, just as long as you know what you want. This location as well as all others are very grab and go with a little bit of seating out doors (including the benches in Cupertino Village). I did not realize that this bakery is a chain store and that they have multiple locations throughout the Bay Area. This place is what I would call your fail-safe Chinese bakery. It's the place to visit if you want delicious buns or egg tarts similar to what you would get at a decent dim sum restaurant. The only time I've had buns that were of comparable quality, where there is a pie crust-like texture and a nice crunch when you bite into it, was at a top-notch dim sum restaurant up in SF known for their pork buns. Their egg tarts are also delicious and you can even get them warm. Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of the other items they sell such as the mousse cakes, etc. They just don't taste good nor even fresh sometimes. There is a $10 card minimum, and they do not take Apple/Google Pay. Must-stop shop whenever I'm in the area! I try to not go so much now because I keep telling myself I need to slow down on the pastries... but who am I kidding? It's my weakness and always will be. Since the pandemic up until now, their prices hasn't changed that much. Granted, it makes a difference when I pay, but this increase was only rather recent, back in October. Everything increased by a quarter - so what was $2.99 is now $3.25, what was $2.10 is now $2.35... and so on. The brioche is always a must get! It is fluffy, and has a a sweet, soft, crunch on parts of the brioche, unlike 85 Bakery. Though the packaging is identical, I personally like Sheng Kee's brioche more because of the soft, sweet bits that you get inside. It pairs sooo well with Vietnamese cafe sua nong! Yep, you guessed it. That's what I'm currently having while writing this review. Apart from the brioche, I highly recommend: the golden coconut twist, coconut bun, pineapple custard bun (contains no actual pineapple), BBQ pork bun, pork floss bun, and of course, the egg tarts. I feel that here, the ladies working are nice. I don't feel stared at or pressured to buy what I'm taking forever to contemplate on. They don't charge you for a bag for all the pastries you are getting (in my experiences here) and they're super fast at ringing up all your items (bonus!), but at the location in Milpitas, they will charge you .15 cents per bag without even asking you if you'd like one or not. read more

Cool Taiwanese bakery next to 99 ranch. Not as expensive as 85 degrees but with excellent quality of baked and pastry goods. My first recommendation is to try for swirly cakes (taro or strawberry) which is sure to impress others at parties and other food gatherings. These swirly cakes also have what is called a "tiger skin" (some combination of sticky egg and flower) wrapped around for extra texture and flavor. Next, you can try any of the pastries based on what you're looking for and the description. Enjoy both savory and sweet pastries. This place is definitely better than 85 degrees and the baked goods feel fresher!! The jalapeno cheese bread has just the right amount of spice but was a little on the greasy side. The curry green onion bread was delicious, and I recommend trying it! The ham and cheese bread tasted like a slice of pizza so I wouldn't necessarily get it again. The mocha swill roll slice was light and fluffy and had just the right amount of sweetness. When I was there in the morning, they were batches and batches of fresh buns, and I could try them right out of the oven. The pork sung corn bun was a tasty surprise. The bun was coated in pork sung, no filling, but was extremely umami and tasty. The char siu bun was unfortunately a little disappointing as there was lots of fatty meat in there. The ham and mushroom pizza was so fresh, fluffy, juicy and just so yummy. As for the sweet buns, I got the green tea and red bean bun which had no filling but was good. It had a little floral note, perhaps jasmine green tea?! The blueberry bun was like a filet Wellington, outside a flaky layer, then fluffy bun and a layer of sweet blueberry jam. Very fresh and nice.
