When I think about what best exemplifies my taste of childhood, I think of Sheng Kee. I always loved their pastries as a kid, and going to Marina Food was always made more exciting when my parents would let me pick out one to take home for breakfast the next morning (usually it ended up being the coconut cream pastry). Even as I grew older, I never grew out of combing through their catalogue of delightful egg tarts and sweet and savory buns. The experience I'm speaking about today pertains to their custom cake order. You will likely need to speak Cantonese or Mandarin Chinese for this. I ordered a 1/2 sheet cake for my party of approximately 20 people, and we had almost half of the cake left over to spare! To be fair, I did give a much more generous estimate (I mentioned that there would be around 20-30 people attending my party). Definitely would've downsized had I known everyone's appetite would be so small. The ladies working there will let you know which size is best for your party. The cake was gigantic, and made in my favorite flavor (their mango mousse) with my birthday message written atop it in red and white icing. I loved everything about it! They're generous with the pickup process, you can definitely arrive after the time you specified for picking up. Everything went very smoothly, my friends were surprised that the cake was so delicious and many had never even had a mango flavored cake to begin with either! The creamy rich mousse layers complement the spongey cake perfectly. It was $135 total, but if you get their regular fruit cream cake, it'll be cheaper than if you pick a specialty cake (their tiramisu, passionfruit, etc). read more

Came by for a small snack: Chinese bbq pork and a chicken pastry. You have the option to choose one on the shelf or a "heated" version behind the counter. I choose the warm version because I figured it might taste better. In general, it was ok. But my only gripe was that I had to eat about 1/3 to 1/2 of the pastry before I actually got to the good party (the meat). In the past, I've enjoyed other items such as the buns (like my fav taro bun) and bread (especially the custard toast). Sometimes for people's bday, we would get a cake as well. I have a bit of an obsession with pineapple buns and Sheng Kee freaking delivers on my cravings every time. They have so many different options of pineapple buns that you're bound to find one that speaks to you -- red bean, taro, custard, coconut, etc. Their egg custard tarts are also fantastic. I wish they had like that golden brown top and flaky crust like Portuguese ones do, but totally get that the Chinese ones are a different ballpark. Still the egg custard mixture was light, airy and the optimal sweetness. I also got this one other matcha bun that was absolutely divine. Great pastries, cake, buns, and breads available for purchase. Bae and I normally swing by here on the weekends to pick up a few savory and sweet items for lunch. It's pretty easy to just pick and choose what you want. They have some staples that are always there, and they'll also have more seasonal items when available (notably lots of mooncake options during mid autumn festival). No where to sit inside, so you'll just have to take your goodies to go. There's a parking garage nearby, and the cashiers are efficient and polite enough. My favorite goodies are the rose lychee cake slice, the taro bread, and the chicken curry puffs! read more

Sheng Kee is one of my go-to bakeries because they have pretty decent cakes (you know it's good when my Asian parents say "mm it's not too sweet!" when they eat it). You can preorder cakes 1-2 days in advance on the website or by calling. The last time I got a cake though, I picked it up at 10am and when we cut the cake at 1pm, the inside fillings and frosting were still a little frozen/icy. read more

The staff won't even write a simple name on the cake for us. Other bakeries have no issues obliging with this simple request. The employees are not very friendly either. I stopped by with my mom to pick up a cake for my brother's birthday. We didn't preorder, just walked in and hoped they had a taro cake ready for us to purchase. When we examined the display case, there were plenty of cake options, including the taro cake we were hoping for. My mom did make the comment that the cake was much more expensive than ever before, a solid $31 compared to her memory of back when it was $20. Inflation happens, though. They also offered candles, both in the number shapes and the skinny colored ones. I went through the pastry line and picked out three pastries, including one cocktail bun, one custard bun, and the purple romance (fresh taro) bun. I was a bit shocked that one purple romance bun costed $2.35, but I didn't take the time to look at the prices of the other two. The cashier was not rude, to the contrary of many other reviews, but maybe we just got lucky. They packed up the taro cake for us and that added to the cost of my three pastries plus an additional snack came out to about $42. Each pastry went into its own plastic bag too. The cocktail bun was pretty good, exactly what it should be and pretty much similar to other cocktail buns I've had in the past. The custard inside the custard bun was in good ratio to the bun portion, and that one was my favorite out of my pastry haul. The custard did taste really sweet though so if you get it remember to eat every bit of custard with an appropriate amount of bun. The purple romance was the first its kind that I had, I know it's a popular item at 85C and other bakery locations. The purple crust on top was flaky and the taro filling wasn't overpowering, but it tasted pretty dry to me. They had most items in stock on a Sunday afternoon, which doesn't happen very often at bakery locations, so that was good too. read more

Smaller version of 85C, though they do have some interesting bread/savory food offerings that 85C doesn't have. However, for the most part, their breads aren't as good or large in portion size for the same/similar price. They have some cakes as well, but I definitely prefer 85C over Sheng Kee's cakes. This location is inside of Marina Foods, so it's very small and if you go in the evening, they're basically out of 85% of their items. Only one cashier and they take forever to ring you up. They also tried to stuff 4 of our breads into the smallest plastic bag possible when they clearly have larger ones. $10 minimum for credit cards. read more

I've been coming here for 20+ years but continue to have bad experiences that really deters me from coming anymore even if it is convenient. During COVID times, they have no regard for hygiene and will touch the money and touch your food with the same glove. They've made mistakes when ringing up , which I understand when its busy, but when I ask for a correction they are very agitated and make it your fault for troubling them. Regular foods we get here: Pineapple bun Brioche bread ...and tea eggs Yes, that's right! They have tea eggs here, made fresh every day! My family loves tea eggs, so we never skip on them whenever we come here (which is often because it's right next to ranch 99). Their brioche with the sweet crust is so good, but I try not to get it too often because I can easily eat it all in one sitting. And pineapple buns are just a staple bakery good for us. In my book, if you have decent pineapple buns, you are a decent bakery. Sheng Kee passes the test. Also, they have weekly specials, so don't forget to check those out. Sheng Kee's fruit cheese tart has been a staple dessert in our house since I was a child. One day I'll write a list of my favorite desserts in the south bay, and this will surely be at the top. If you order in advance, you can be selective as to which fruits you want included - strawberries, kiwi, and/or peaches. Their filling is made with cream cheese, and unlike the custard that you typically find in fruit tarts. Back in the day, these tarts cost ~$12, now they're up to ~$20. I actually ordered my wedding cake from here because I wanted a Chinese cake (light in every way), and because it was right across the street from where the reception was (Hong Fu Restaurant). Working with a Chinese bakery for a wedding is generally cheaper too. But even though the reception venue was right across the street from the bakery, they still charged me full price for delivery. Kind of ridiculous, but I guess it's delivery none the less. So I let that slide. What I DID NOT let slide was the fact that when I ordered an ALL WHITE cake, they put UGLY LITTLE PINK AND BLUE FLOWERS ON IT! What did they not understand about ALL WHITE CAKE? Now, everytime I go to someone else's wedding, I get sad about how my wedding cake looked like crap and how everyone's cake looks so beautiful and classy. Good thing I had a talented friend to arrange some flowers on it to cover it up a little. Bottom line: do not get your wedding cake from here. Other cakes are good though for birthdays and such. The black forest cake is good. Other baked goods are okay too - my family used to get breads from here. I was a little hesitant to go into Marina foods because I am not Asian & like only Asian people shop there. I couldn't figure out what flavor moon cakes I was getting and thankfully without feeling awkward the young man who rung me up labeled each item that I purchased. The fact that he was nice that I couldn't read or understand any of the signs for any of the bakery goods and helped me figure things out made me feel more comfortable. Pretty good bakery - I actually prefer it to 85 degrees; the pastries don't have that kind of oily, almost acrid taste that some other Chinese bakeries have. They also sell cute, reasonably priced cakes. I purchased the rainbow cake for a small celebration got multiplied compliments on its look and taste. This bakery is located inside of the Marina shopping center and is much smaller than the location on Wolfe. They haven't yet really figured out how to deal with a line (i.e. where people should stand), so when it gets busy, things can get pretty crowded and confusing. Bonus - since it's located in the Marina shopping center, you can go grocery shopping before or after and/or grab something to eat from the eatery a few steps away. read more

This bakery is inside of Marina Food supermarket. I came here in a little desperation and they came through. It was a teammate's birthday and we had everything planned out to get a cake at La Patisserie, but somehow now one really knew that he wasn't a huge fan of chocolate. FAIL. Fortunately, I think on my toes. We were having lunch at Mandarin Gourmet and I stayed back as everyone left and ran over ot Sheng Kee. I had never been here myself but I know a lot of co-workers do. I needed enough cake for 16 people, which meant getting two large cakes or one large and a bunch of small stuff. After some deliberation, I decided on an all-fruit cake and a few smaller dishes like the mango mousse and tiramisu. The lady at the counter directed me to which ones had fresh fruit vs. canned fruit, which was helpful. After about 7 minutes, I had my cakes in boxes and left for the office. The cakes were a hit. Some of the foreign co-workers are unfamiliar with the lightness of chinese cakes. They thought we had the sweet, heavy American cakes and refrained, but once we told them they were Chinese, they suddenly got interested. Needless to say, the cakes were a hit. The birthday boy even got to take a mango mousse home. The place is busy and although the cake didn't look super fresh it was just fine. A little busy and loud and they don't know English that well, and they only take cash. But bottom line, they saved my butt so it's a solid 3. read more

Very traditional Taiwanese bread though they're starting to venture out into the more creative bread styles like 85C has. I come here when I want more authentic bread, simpler albeit plainer. I really like their normal Taiwan Toast (super soft and fluffy) and the Raisin toast is great too. Love their pineapple buns (again really soft) and the variations to the pineapple bun such as the pineapple bun with custard (great custard filling, perfect sweetness), chocolaet pinapple bun (when I'm craving something sweet). The taro bun is great too! Very soft and fluffy but different from the one 85C has. 85C's taro bread is more chewy and has a lot of liquidy filling inside whereas the taro bun here is more fluffy and flaky and inside the filling is more of a liquidy solid. Small shop but decor is simple and clean, just like the bread. If you're looking for something simpler, cheaper, more authentic and less extravagant than 85C, this is the place :) read more

My family has been buying from this bakery for more than a decade, and guess what~ everything still taste the same! I love the egg tarts and pineapple buns here, but their chicken pie and curry pies are yummy too! My mom gets cake from here every chance she gets, usually the mango or the taro one. I think with the cakes it's hit or miss depending on how long the cake sat in their walk-in fridge. I like Sheng Kee bakeries but I would recommend you drive the 3 minutes to the Wolfe Road Sheng Kee Bakery in the 99 Ranch Market complex. That one is a standalone shop, nicely lit, clean and just a huge improvement. I actually didn't think much about the difference until a Marina Food Supermarket visit (this bakery is in a corner inside the supermarket) and saw an employee cutting a long roll of some sort into smaller rolls to package and sell. The roll looked like it was filled with corn. She had on plastic gloves BUT I kept seeing her slice off a chunk and then pop in whatever corn and other filling bits that fell out into her mouth. What's the point of gloves then? You've contaminated them! I've bought pastries here before but ever since seeing that woman munch her way through wrapping up pastries, I haven't. read more

I've been a customer here for almost 10 years and never did I encounter what I did today. Poor customer service, swearing at customers and even raising a knife at a customer. This morning, I went to buy bread and at the cashier, the worker was going to use a tong that was ok the counter and I asked if she could switch to another one because of sanity. And she told me "if you want switch, go grab one yourself"and I did. After that, she asked me if two bread can be put into one bag and I didn't want to because the bread is going to be on top of each other and going to be squished. Then she started insulting me about being an arrogant Chinese person even though she is a Chinese herself and started to swear at me. I asked for the manager but she said the manager isn't here. She thinks that I was looking down at her and said I was trash. I don't know why she would even think that way because I never said anything insulting to her or anything that disrespects her. I came here for ordering cake at morning time because they told me to do this if I really want the specific type. This bakery is small since it is part of a supermarket but it does quite well given the amount of space it has. I always come here for the chocolate pineapple bun which never disappoints. I have also tried their egg and ham bao and coconut bread which is all delicious. I absolutely adore chinese bread, cakes and pastries; and my favorite place for them in the Bay Area is Sheng Kee. Even though it is a bakery chain (originally from Taipai), I always find that their pastries have the perfect balance of sweetness and are light/fluffy. Customer service here is generally very friendly; bakers are detail-oriented and timely. Having been customer to this specific location for the past 15 years of my life, I have never been disappointed! Sheng-Kee is conveniently located inside Marina Foods, on the right as you walk in. They have a window display of cakes (and individual slices) that range from western and eastern varieties, that aren't too sweet. I have consistently celebrated my birthday each year with their Taro cake, which is unique and absolutely DELISH! It sounds a bit unusual but is definitely worth the risk! :) I have also often purchased their puff pastry dim sums like char siu pork pastry, curry chicken pot pie, egg tart, Portuguese egg tart; and have thoroughly enjoyed each countless times. Last but not least, they have a reasonably large collection of Chinese breads and toast. I like how each bread is moist, fluffy and flavorful. You begin by grabbing a tray and thongs, then just pick whichever breads intrigue you, bring to register to pay. Toasts refers to "chinese bread bricks," which are very different from american breads. They have plain, raisin, red bean, milk curd etc...My favorite has been raisin-milk curd with a pineapple topping. It's awesome! The breads wouldl've been 5 stars but wayyyyy offset by its location. The Asian market that houses the bakery is gross, although not as gross as some of the other markets or Taiwan's night markets where you have to hold your breath when you walk in. I had the taro bread and Portuguese egg custard. The egg custard is the BEST I've ever had, better than Taipei or Houston's Chinatown. The taro bread was slightly burned but still so good.
