We were referred to Shelton's Salon & Spa by angels disguised as traffic...really. While waiting for a car ahead of me to make a turn, I looked to my left and saw their sign. I was startled by the name match, but I then made a turn onto their parking lot (YES, free parking!!) and I'm so thankful that I did! The clients leaving had the best styles on the healthiest hair as evidence of their work. My teenage daughter was suffering from hair disaster; Mr. Shelton and his daughter Lisa analyzed my daughter's hair from the scalp to the ends and shared product remedies, different style options, and precision cuts which would benefit her. With 47 years of experience, Mr. Shelton gave her a precision style and cut, Lisa used the products which were most effective for her hair and scalp, and she also had a deep-steam conditioning. This entire process took less than 2 hours and my daughter went into an ULTRA, GENERATION Z EXCITEMENT with jumps, cheers, and acronym hollers when she saw her hair!! Originally from the Dominican Republic she knows how to look at your scalp's growth pattern, face structure and customize a cut just for you. I have never had a hair dresser that understands me like her. Everytime I send someone to her I get thanked and rethanked! She's pricy but worth every penny. AND you dont have to keep coming back every six to eight weeks for a trim. Her cuts continue to grow evenly into different styles. Even sistas say she performs miracles! Shelton was flexible and had me sit in his chair working me into his busy schedule. The staff is friendly, the space, and tools are clean and the atmosphere is relaxed. The place has a positive vibe. I have been curious about this neoghborhood establishment for years and finally decided to try it. I called to ask about scheduling a cut and they offered to work me in for a same-day appointment. I explained I have a frizzy mop that is overdue to be cut and asked how much they charge. They quoted me a price. I came in, still curious. A man asked me if I wanted my hair shampooed. I was in a rush and responded I wanted whatever is quickest. He said "shampoo." I got a shampoo. He cut my hair. He took out all the layering and spent a half hour blow drying it straight. It looks beautiful. I have no idea what it will look like curly. They charged me 40% more than the quoted price for the shampoo and style. Because of the tine it took to blow my hair straight, I was late for my work appointment. I also spent money I had not budgeted because of services I did not want or need. I tried to discuss this and gaslighted me and refused to adjust the price. I paid and left in tears, feeling I had been taken advantage of. Wish the pricing and service options had been more clearly explained at the outset--they could have gained a loyal customer with better communication. If you go, budget plenty of time, ask to see the price list, and know that a shampoo costs $25 and is purely optional. read more

The worst massage I have ever tried to get. Abominable. First, the massage therapist had clearly just smoked a cigarette and smelled terrible. I told her so and she disappeared for over ten minutes, leaving me alone naked under only a sheet after I had specifically asked for a blanket. When she finally returned in a bathrobe, she told me there were no blankets so she would cover me with small towels. (!!!) A few minutes in to her massage (cold hands, cold cream), I realized I was so incredibly cold that I was shaking and there was no way this was going to turn around and get any better. So, I got up and put on my clothes and walked out. I have never done that in all the massages over the years Ive gotten. As you can see this place wants to call itself a "spa" http://www.sheltonssalonandspa.com/index.htm But it seems to be just an old hair salon cheaply trying to add other services. About an hour after I left the owner called my cellphone and told me that if I had wanted a warm room for my massage I should have specified that when I called and made the appt, as "there are plenty of people who like cold rooms" and he doesn't know what the customer wants unless specified. Yeah right. I let him know my Yelp review would reflect that he called me to school me on the way I should have custom ordered my massage (instead of him calling to make amends). Worst. Massage. This is my first time leaving a review on Yelp and I wish it could be a better one! I had my first appointment last December with Lisa at Shelton's and she was an hour late, but I know DC traffic is rough and she did a wonderful job with my hair and I was really happy with the quality of the service. So I decided to try them again. I made an appointment last week and today when I showed up the woman at the front desk said Lisa wasn't there yet. After waiting 15min I prompted "So do you know when she might be arriving?" And the response was "No. I'm not sure if she knows she has a client today. Hopefully she looked in the book". There was no follow-up or reassurance. So another 5min pass and I ask "Do you have a way to contact her to know if she's coming?" and the answer was "No. I don't have her number." So I wait a few more minutes and ask "Well, is there a way you could get her number?". So the woman at the front makes some calls and finally reaches Lisa, who apparently doesn't pick up. So at this point I've been waiting for 30min with no reassurance or apologies. The woman at the front offered that someone "might be coming at at 3 who could do your hair". My appointment was for 12. So at 12:45 I left. I told the woman at the front desk that I couldn't wait any longer and kindly voiced my annoyance and she didn't even offer an apology, she just said "I don't run the place, so it's not my fault." It was ridiculous that they did not have a way to contact one of their stylists when she was running late and super unprofessional and frustrating that she didn't bother showing up or notifying anyone that she would be late. I'm generally an understanding person and brushed off my appointment being an hour late last time, but this was just so annoying. I've never had such poor service. I will not be returning. Again, it was nothing about the quality, she really did a wonderful job and was very warm and kind in person, which is why I was excited to return, but if she can't show up on time or show up at all, I can't be a client. read more

I read some of her other reviews before writing my own and she seems like a "crying critic" I have more things to do than say good or bad things about businesses, especially ones that have stood the test of time, like Sheton's Hair Gallery.
