You end up paying for the tip twice. Before we ordered our waitress told us Shell Shack charges a service fee and this goes to the host, bartenders, and restaurant. This does not go to her. At the end of the day you are paying double for a tip which I feel should be earned not automatically charged . We did not order any drinks to tip anyone other than our server. At this point we were already sitting and seemed more of a hassle to leave. It's absolutely ridiculous the amount we paid for a tip. We came in a party if 4 adults and 3 children, a 1 year old, 4 year old, and 9 year old. On a $55 bill we left a 36% tip after the waitress was tipped. Wish I would have known this because if I did I would have not come here to eat. The food itself was okay. The crab tots were good. I had the 1/2 lb shrimp and it was a good amount of food. The kitchen sink is just all of the flavors mixed together. The amount we paid for the tip completely took over any excitement we had for the food. Had the calamari and didn't think it to be something that I'd return for. I'm shaking my head. The pic of the calamari they posted is what bought me here, but end result for me was sincere disappointment. Waitress was nice, but the bartender....something was not right with him as I overheard him being overly aggressive with her. I asked her about it and she says he is always mean to her. I saw the word posted on a sign in front of his face with the word "bully" when looked back at him. THEY REFUSED TO GIVE ME MY MOBILE ORDER WHEN ARRIVING TO PICK IT UP. THE ORDER WAS ALREADY PAID FOR. I would give less than 1 star if i had the option. WORST SERVICE EVER. A a close friend brought me to the Mesquite location to pick up an online order, and they treated me like a CRIMINAL. The restaurant apparently has enacted a new policy that requires the person picking up the order to show a picture ID and the credit card that was used to place the order. However, I rode with my friend in his car, I didn't have those items with me. This restaurant has NEVER required us to show the credit card or ID when picking up an order. They refused to give me the food I bought even though I had the order confirmation email on my phone as well as proof of the charge from Shell Shack on my Chase Banking App. I simply requested my money back in the form of a refund, and the store refused. So Shell Shack essentially stole almost $100 from me. We had to go all the way back home to grab my credit card and picture ID and come back to Shell Shack to get my food. Shell Shack manager Shane claims that this policy has recently been enacted in response to food thefts from the restaurant, however, this problem will NOT be solved by treating paying customers like CRIMINALS even after they have provided sufficient proof of placing the order. I have never seen anything like this and have never experienced such terrible customer service at any other restaurant. I strongly encourage people to stay FAR away from this restaurant!!! Definitely will be contacting the corporate office to report this location-specifically the manager named Shane. DO NOT EAT HERE!!! read more

Living in Albuquerque now, I don't get a chance to eat a lot of good seafood so when I come home to Dallas to visit, I try to get my fill. This year I came to celebrate my birthday here and both the service and the food was great. I split the VIP boil with The Kitchen Sink seasonings with my dad and it was still a lot of food. We also had the crab tots and alligator bites as appetizers at our table and both were delicious. Another HIT with Shell Shack! I ordered the catfish basket and assumed the fries would be basic, but they rivaled Wing Stop fries which we all know are the bomb! We literally ate all the fries even the crumbs! The tartar sauce was good bit needed a little more tang so I squeezed the juice of the lemon wedges in it which helped. The catfish came out hot and delicious! The bread pudding with the salted caramel gelato was a very nice surprise! The only minor drawback was the appetizer. We didn't care too much for the crab tater tots and thought they needed more crab flavor, but overall a great dining experience! Definitely coming back again. read more

My husband and I ate here on Tuesday night for the final time. We have been coming here for their crabs since they opened several years ago because it's near our home. We have noticed a definite change over the past year or so. I am well aware that the pandemic has hurt many businesses and cutting corners have become the norm with some places to simply stay open. We have tried to support them as best we could by eating there at least once (sometimes twice a month) and during the shut downs we would order take-out. We use a 3 strike rule when dining out to allow a restaurant to have an off night and still redeem themselves. We used up all of our strikes over the past year, plus an extra one when a waitress onetime brusquely informed me to order my bar drink carefully because they will not remake it if I have an issue with it. We know this location has struggled with large parties coming in and causing problems. They get loud and complain about pricing and food, send drinks back to the bar when they are half consumed and even walk their tabs. We've been there multiple times when they've had to call the police. We have taken all of those issues into account. We know it's hard. But if you continue to treat your good customers poorly because you have some bad customers you will chase the good customers away and only be left with the bad. The final straw came Tuesday. Our waitress was poorly trained and inattentive (even though only about 1/4th of the restaurant was occupied.) She also had extremely long nails which are frowned upon in the food industry because of the pathogens they can trap. She wore no gloves when handling our food. Most of the wait staff wore there masks under their noses or at their chin. Our waitress DID wear her mask correctly. We noticed the market price for crabs was through the roof! I know that isn't something they have full control over but when you need to charge so much to cover your cost you should up your service experience. My husband ordered king crabs at almost $50 per pound. He normally gets the snow crab but they was so close to the king crab pricing it didn't matter which he chose. I ordered a half pound of grilled shrimp and had a bar drink. She put in the order for a full pound, I guess she forgot what I said. Which would have been fine if the shrimp was worth taking home. They apparently decided it's a good idea to grill the shrimp with a full shell and legs on...I'm assuming to cut cost? The problem is it causes the shell to be brittle and hard to remove fully so a lot of it ends up in your mouth. I threw 2/3rds of the pound out. My husband said his crab was "pretty good" but when our bill came we didn't feel like it was a $100 experience, by any means. Coupled with the way staff behaves on top of the high prices we will not be returning again. I wish them luck, but we will be spending our money elsewhere. :( read more

My daughter was in the mood to eat seafood, snow crab inparticular. Not doing any research, my husband said we are going to the Shell Shack. First time here, nice atmosphere, they have soft rock, alternative type of music. Small bar, as well as a hand wash for customers after eating a messy boil.....lol Over all our main meals were good and satisfying, side fries not so good, I'm more of a basic french fry girl. Wish they had one of these in Houston! Food was amazing. My server Crystal was awesome. Ordered my appetizers from an iPad at the table. Food came our super quick. I got the crab tater tots and they were amazing. Also got a Caesar side salad which was great. Got the Alaskan king crab with the Kitchen Sink sauce. The sauce needs to be canned and sold it is so good! Loved dipping my crab in it. Also got the potatoes and corn and sausage but honestly the crab was enough. Actually almost enough for two people the share. Would highly recommend you come hungry. I will definitely come back if in the area. To top it off they had an awesome hand washing machine that I've never seen but clean and sanitizes your hands in 12 seconds. read more

Had the VIP Platter. I will not deny that the food was good. It was very flavorful but had to pay first wish I found a little odd then when the food finally did come out after waiting 1.5 hrs my food to come out in a to go box. I guess it was my fault because I should have left when the server told me there are no refunds before we even ordered. They are overpriced for their mediocre food. You can tell they just boil the food them pour their hot salty sauce on it. Last thing make sure you check your food, and count it as well. I oreded a boil that came with 6 potatoes got none, didn't realize it until 20 minutes after I got my food told the server she beings me back 3! They treat black customers like shit and expect us to just just take and still tip well. NASTY NASTY NASTY Don't eat here, you can tell that under all the "sauce" it taste like the food has been sitting for a while. Shellfish have a certain taste and when I order crawfish and crab legs, it taste like they literally took frozen dead crawfish and dipped them in the hot water then dipped in the sauce. A friend introduced me to Shell Shack when we met up for dinner a few years ago. I took my mom when she was in town visiting, and now it's the first thing she requests when she arrives in town. It's a little on the pricy side if you're trying to save money, but it's soooo worth it for a special treat. They season and serve their seafood, New Orleans style, pouring it out in the table for everyone to dig in. My favorite thing to order are the medium spice crab legs. They give you nutcrackers and everything you need to enjoy them or for a few bucks more, they will shell them for you. Definitely get some corn on the cob and potatoes to go in your boil. You will not regret it!! The restaurant on McKinney is usually pretty busy on the weekend and they don't take reservations. I really like the one in Garland. Crystal was our server tonight for dinner! She was delightful! I was starving so I ordered the New England Clam Chowder and it is my favorite in Dallas! Can I hear a Yeehaw?!?!? The drinks were great and we made it for the last 20 min of happy hour! The raw oysters ($16.99) for a dozen were good! We ordered shrimp, king crab, potatoes, corn and sausage with kitchen sink and mild spice and it was Deeeelicious folks!!! Finished the night off with carrot cake. It was nice and coconutty. This was our first time here. This place is really fun. It made a great date night. it was messy - but they do offer gloves and a bib, and they have a cool hand wash machine! it's super fun to share yummy fries, or hush puppies and it's nice loud. My hubby super cute with crab bib put on by pretty server- she was really great! Sorry Joes across street there food is like livin in Florida!! So fresh. Smells almost like the ocean breeze. Well it's a chain. I prefer that whole in the wall 1 or 2 locations locally crab boil restaurant. All wasn't lost the sausage and corn was pretty good. But there wasn't anything special (in my opinion) about the seasoning. It was heavy but it was missing something for me. Me and my wife have eaten at this location and the one in Tyler too many times to count lol. The one thing I always loved was the great service and the consistent quality of there food. On the last visit we had a small issue with our food and the Manager Mr Rubio took care of it. I have to say he was very passionate about making sure we got what we always have come to expect from them. Can't wait for the next visit.
