Went there on my lunch break today to meet my bestie, stood at the door where it says wait to be seated for about 15 minutes and just kept getting ignored. Some kupunas walking in after me would walk in and just sit down so I figured "okay I can just seat myself..." Was looking for a place to go for breakfast prior to heading to the airport,,,so found this place. First things first, after a long drive from Lahaina we got seated, I asked to get the key for the bathroom and there was a HUGE cockroach dying in the stall,,,upside down but legs moving,.,, ok I'll forgive the restaurant for that in the hopes the service/food will make up for it,,, they charged $5.00!!! For a homemade biscuit,,, practically slammed the plate of hash browns on the table,had to ask for a refill of coffee at the very end, when they delivered the food it came with the order slip that the cooks give the wait staff to know the order is completed. Nope. Searched for breakfast spots in Kahului and Google lead us here. Sheik's was one of only a few that were not fast food. My first impression was this place is a dive and in this case first my impression was correct. I have to say they were very diligent in Covid cleaning the tables between diners but overall the restaurant was in need of a good cleaning. It was "dive chic." There were only about five tables seated, yet it took 15 minutes to take our order and another 25 for our food to arrive. Food was a mix. One person in our party received breakfast with burnt bacon and another had the salad. It was mostly iceberg lettuce, tomato and American cheese. The lettuce was cold and fresh but very basic. Overall, the thing that stuck out the most is that this place and the workers are on island time. We weren't expecting "fast food" service but also waited quite a while in front to pay our check as the server never returned. I just remember hamburger steak and fried rice is the way to go here. Didn't bother to look at the menu and that's what I ordered. Waitress suggested loco moco order that comes with fried rice. Didn't notice but my regular $10 hamburger steak turned into the $20 loco moco special. A little shocked on the price difference I thought it would only be a few dollars more BUT everything was great! The mac salad could use a little something but it works. The fried rice is loaded with bacon, portuguese sausage and so much flavor! The fried rice was my favorite and I could opt for just that next time. They do charge over $3 for an egg so I would recommend take out and you can pop on an egg or two yourself. Went in an hour before closing and they were pumping out take out orders. I would prefer take out for next time as the sticky floor and interesting odor as soon as you step in can be a bit much. There was only one waitress who was nice and attentive. Fast forward a year and we found ourselves back in this dive, this time with the addition of a friend who wasn't with us last time and hadn't eaten here since he was a child. The "smell" was in full force as we entered but quickly dissipated as we sat down. A bit skeptical, I did use the restrooms which were surprisingly clean. Old and stained but clean. A positive - they now accept debit & credit cards! FOOD: Saimin - $6.75. My quest to find Maui's best saimin continues. On a positive note, the broth was searing hot, the noodles eggy and chewy, and the cubes of pork topping tender and fresh. The only downfall, and a big one to boot, the broth's flavor was very low in sodium. It wasn't tasteless but could've used a bit more salt. Still, I refused to add in shoyu or table salt as it was still palatable and better for my blood pressure. Banana Pancake - This was listed on their menu specials board which I didn't notice it but my friend did. The single flapjack was huge! The batter was very moist and tasty with that creamy flavor that delicious pancakes are known for. Fresh bananas were mixed in which made my tastebuds dance even more. Up and up with Tasty Crust's version. Highly recommended! SERVICE: We were the only beings there, so service was quick and still friendly. OVERALL: 3.5 stars, very affordable. We decided to try take out since we hadn't eaten at Sheik's for so long and wanted to see how the food was years later. I got the breaded teriyaki and I enjoyed it. It was tender, not chewy or tough at all. It wasn't drenched with teriyaki sauce but it must've been marinated because it had a nice teri flavor. What Sheik's restaurant lacks in decor, they surely make it up if you're looking for local comfort grindages! I really didn't know about this restaurant called "Sheik's", but after reading my Yelp buddies - Michelle S. & Vikendios N.'s wonderful reviews..............then lurking at da wonderful food pics.............I was sold!!! Especially after I took a good look at the Honey Dipped Fried Chicken plate!!!!! The Honey Dipped Fried Chicken reminded me of the KFC original fried chicken as far as texture goes, as the chicken wasn't really crunchy, but it was nicely breaded. As far as the taste goes..........the Honey Dipped Fried Chicken was delicious, as it had a slight sweetness to it............ probably due to the honey they used to make it. I really didn't touch the mac salad on my plate, because you know me & mayonnaise! Lol! Local Restaurant located in Kahului on Wakea Ave. This place has been around forever. It has booths and tables which you can choose to sit at, Walk in and seat yourself and a waitress will be with you shortly with menus and a drink of water. The girls here are friendly. We usually come for lunch or dinner so they have plate lunch stye plates which comes with rice and macaroni salad. They also have Dry Mein which is noodles with pork and green onions and sprouts and a side of dashi (broth). The Chow fun is good too. Hamburger Steak: comes with two scoops of rice and two hamburger patties with brown gravy and a scoop of macaroni salad. Its okay, Fried Chicken Plate: comes with 3 or 4 pieces of chicken and two scoops of rice and macaroni salad. If you dont want the rice you can have french fries which are crinkle cut fries so ono with mustard and mayo combo. Sometimes the chicken is to sweet for me Im not sure if its Honey Dipped Chicken. I've been coming to Sheik's my entire life literally... I have been to the 7 of the 8 islands, east coast, west coast, & in between & tasted many cheeseburgers ... Sheik's cheeseburger deluxe remains to be one of my faves... You cannot beat the price and the burger itself is simple & perfect. The same with their Saimin... noodles are some of the best I've tasted... I prefer not to have pork in mine, but everyone has their own taste.
