Went there on my lunch break today to meet my bestie, stood at the door where it says wait to be seated for about 15 minutes and just kept getting ignored. Some kupunas walking in after me would walk in and just sit down so I figured "okay I can just seat myself..." Waited, waited, made eye contact, smiled a few times at the busy aunty waitressing, I get nothing but stink eye. The couple after me sits down and the aunty by passes me and drops utensils and water on their table and ignores and walks past me again. Finally I asked if I could have a menu and order and she tells me "you were supposed to wait to be seated!" rudely....I come into Sheiks at least once a month....My friend arrived and met her outside and told her let's just go to Kohos instead. Went to this local place and decided to try something different her on the island. Hawaiian food. Teriyaki breaded chicken. Served with mash potatoes and macaroni salad. Miso soup. And etc. The waitress was nice. Her food description was on point. Now Place was 3 star clean. Bathrooms could use a lot of help. But being in area I guess it's natural. Chicken was gooood! Mac needs more tlc maybe sugar or something little plain. Potatoes have a butter taste. Miso soup fresh green onions Stir fry noodles was good had good flavor with Polynesian sausage and etc. But I loved the refills on the package hot coco!!! That's a star in its self. Was looking for a place to go for breakfast prior to heading to the airport,,,so found this place. First things first, after a long drive from Lahaina we got seated, I asked to get the key for the bathroom and there was a HUGE cockroach dying in the stall,,,upside down but legs moving,.,, ok I'll forgive the restaurant for that in the hopes the service/food will make up for it,,, they charged $5.00!!! For a homemade biscuit,,, practically slammed the plate of hash browns on the table,had to ask for a refill of coffee at the very end, when they delivered the food it came with the order slip that the cooks give the wait staff to know the order is completed. A couple things to note before going, this is definitely a locals type of spot, don't expect a trendy photo op, this is a cute place, but not some generic, gentrified spot. Locals and retro diner are the vibe. Food is amazing. Be sure to ask for their specials and order whatever their specials happen to be that day. We had Ox Tail Soup, their Special Fried Rice, a Ham and Egg Sandwich and Homemade Biscuit- all of which were very tasty. We enjoyed every dish we ordered. You HAVE to order the biscuit, it's buttery, crispy, and delicious, not your usual type of biscuit. The service here is great, the waitresses were super nice, ans helped us as quickly as possible. It was a very normal restaurant where the locals hung out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The foods were decent and delicious. The prices were practical for the working class. Nope. Searched for breakfast spots in Kahului and Google lead us here. Sheik's was one of only a few that were not fast food. My first impression was this place is a dive and in this case first my impression was correct. I have to say they were very diligent in Covid cleaning the tables between diners but overall the restaurant was in need of a good cleaning. It was "dive chic." There were only about five tables seated, yet it took 15 minutes to take our order and another 25 for our food to arrive. Food was a mix. One person in our party received breakfast with burnt bacon and another had the salad. It was mostly iceberg lettuce, tomato and American cheese. The lettuce was cold and fresh but very basic. Overall, the thing that stuck out the most is that this place and the workers are on island time. We weren't expecting "fast food" service but also waited quite a while in front to pay our check as the server never returned. We had a lot of leftovers to take home and asked the waitress for a container and she said they have to charge us $2 for each "takeout" container. What? This is a first! And because of how the orders went in, each waitress kept bringing out food in increments for each table seated instead of a whole order for one table, jumping from table to table. My order was a simple Dry Mein with an egg salad sandwich. After waiting almost 15 minutes the sandwich came. My two guests ordered after they bought the Dry mein to the table, another 10 minutes later. I ate my food. Just as I finished the waitress delivered their orders and cleared my plates. It was weird. Haven't been in here forever. Not usually my first choice and for whatever reason when it is, they're closed. Finally made it in and am rather surprised with the outcome. I just remember hamburger steak and fried rice is the way to go here. Didn't bother to look at the menu and that's what I ordered. Waitress suggested loco moco order that comes with fried rice. Didn't notice but my regular $10 hamburger steak turned into the $20 loco moco special. A little shocked on the price difference I thought it would only be a few dollars more BUT everything was great! The mac salad could use a little something but it works. The fried rice is loaded with bacon, portuguese sausage and so much flavor! The fried rice was my favorite and I could opt for just that next time. They do charge over $3 for an egg so I would recommend take out and you can pop on an egg or two yourself. Went in an hour before closing and they were pumping out take out orders. I would prefer take out for next time as the sticky floor and interesting odor as soon as you step in can be a bit much. There was only one waitress who was nice and attentive. Fast forward a year and we found ourselves back in this dive, this time with the addition of a friend who wasn't with us last time and hadn't eaten here since he was a child. The "smell" was in full force as we entered but quickly dissipated as we sat down. A bit skeptical, I did use the restrooms which were surprisingly clean. Old and stained but clean. A positive - they now accept debit & credit cards! FOOD: Saimin - $6.75. My quest to find Maui's best saimin continues. On a positive note, the broth was searing hot, the noodles eggy and chewy, and the cubes of pork topping tender and fresh. The only downfall, and a big one to boot, the broth's flavor was very low in sodium. It wasn't tasteless but could've used a bit more salt. Still, I refused to add in shoyu or table salt as it was still palatable and better for my blood pressure. Banana Pancake - This was listed on their menu specials board which I didn't notice it but my friend did. The single flapjack was huge! The batter was very moist and tasty with that creamy flavor that delicious pancakes are known for. Fresh bananas were mixed in which made my tastebuds dance even more. Up and up with Tasty Crust's version. Highly recommended! SERVICE: We were the only beings there, so service was quick and still friendly. OVERALL: 3.5 stars, very affordable. We used to eat at Sheik's small-kid time but hadn't eaten here in probably close to a decade. We decided to try take out since we hadn't eaten at Sheik's for so long and wanted to see how the food was years later. I got the breaded teriyaki and I enjoyed it. It was tender, not chewy or tough at all. It wasn't drenched with teriyaki sauce but it must've been marinated because it had a nice teri flavor. The side salad was basically iceberg lettuce with dressing. My wife got the hamburger steak, which was flavorful, soft, and tender. AMBIANCE: Parking: They have there own parking that can fit about 25 cars. Seating: All seating is inside, good for groups, and room for about 60 people. I didn't really catch much action in the area but I assume it would be a popping place if it took place when school is in session. FOOD: Honey Fried Chicken (Recommend) The portions were fulfilling. The skin was cooked to crisp and the white meat was juicy. The honey gave it a unique taste from your everyday fast food chicken. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Solid. The server clarified items on the menu and my food came at a reasonable time. TL; DR OVERALL: 4 Stars. Not the most decorated place but a diamond in the rough I would say. After hitting up Sunnyside in Wahiawa this past week, I find myself on Maui today, so I wen' hit up another local kine joint called - Sheik's Restaurant in Kahului. The Honey Dipped Fried Chicken Plate you get (4) pieces of fried chicken - a breast, thigh, drumstick, & wing, (2) scoops white rice, & (1) scoop of mac salad. All of this for just ($9.75). What can I say about the grub-a-dub-dub? The Honey Dipped Fried Chicken reminded me of the KFC original fried chicken as far as texture goes, as the chicken wasn't really crunchy, but it was nicely breaded. As far as the taste goes..........the Honey Dipped Fried Chicken was delicious, as it had a slight sweetness to it............ probably due to the honey they used to make it. I really didn't touch the mac salad on my plate, because you know me & mayonnaise! Lol! Service was great, as the waitress was attentive, and after placing my food order..........the food came out fresh & hot in a timely manner. There is lots of free parking in the private parking lot. The restaurant is really old skool, as it was open window for ventilation .........although I saw that they had A/C, I certainly did not feel it today........... Local Restaurant located in Kahului on Wakea Ave. This place has been around forever. It has booths and tables which you can choose to sit at, Walk in and seat yourself and a waitress will be with you shortly with menus and a drink of water. The girls here are friendly. We usually come for lunch or dinner so they have plate lunch stye plates which comes with rice and macaroni salad. They also have Dry Mein which is noodles with pork and green onions and sprouts and a side of dashi (broth). The Chow fun is good too. Hamburger Steak: comes with two scoops of rice and two hamburger patties with brown gravy and a scoop of macaroni salad. Its okay, Fried Chicken Plate: comes with 3 or 4 pieces of chicken and two scoops of rice and macaroni salad. If you dont want the rice you can have french fries which are crinkle cut fries so ono with mustard and mayo combo. Sometimes the chicken is to sweet for me Im not sure if its Honey Dipped Chicken.
