Great place for Mediterranean food on Grand in St Louis! I went with two girlfriends and the first thing we all noticed was how much we loved the décor. It was a very fun place to share a meal. I ordered the sheesh taouk plate with a side of fries and it was so plentiful that I could barely eat half! The pricing here is more than reasonable for the amount of food you get and the service is great- the food came relatively fast. Would definitely come back! read more

Dined in tonight with a group of 6 of us. My husband and I ate at Sheesh couple years back and the food, as well as service, was phenomenal. Tonight was a different story. I recommended the place to my friends and was almost excited for them to try it and we were all let down. Not sure if management changed (and we're not ignorant to current covid/server shortages) but the food lacked, menu changed and they were out of things, our friends got raw, and I mean raw chicken, and the service was beyond awful. Our waitress literally disappeared and we didn't see her for probably an hour. She took our order and was gone. We got our food from someone else, we ate (no one checked to see how things were), and we waited and waited and waited. We finally just called a different waitress over but they all seemed frazzled, unprofessional and completely uncoordinated. A lady came over who seemed either as a manager or owner and not a sorry, not an explanation, just put our checks on the table and walked away. For my birthday, me and my wife checked out this restaurant in order to try the Turkish coffee. The initial atmosphere was calm and inviting and the staff was friendly and helpful. The coffee was strong and flavorful as I hoped it would be and the small cup was more than enough. We tried the falafel as an appetizer and I really could've just had that because it was so delicious by itself, probably the best I have had since California, but we added the lamb kebab (Adana Kebab) and chicken with rice dish (Sheesh Tawook) for the entree. Both dishes were impressive in flavor and presentation and I loved the cucumber sauce with the rice. Now the star of the show was the kunafa... this was worth the half hour wait. It was a sweet pastry filled with cheese and topped with a simple vanilla ice cream and was one of the best made from scratch desserts I have had in a VERY long time! For those looking for great Turkish cuisine, do not sleep on this place! read more

I love this place, especially the ground beef with grilled eggplant. The okra stew which comes as a side with some entrees is very good. They have a very interesting dessert that is shredded pastry surrounding cheese. It's delicious! Order with your meal because it takes awhile for them to bake it. Had late lunch today. Food was above average, as was the service. Started with "Turkish pizza," a thin crispy shell with a sweet roasted pepper sauce and minced seasoned beef. A squeeze of lemon set it off perfectly. My friend ordered the juice cocktail. Our server was adamant that she would hate it. Fortunately she's a weirdo and loved the combo of fresh lemon, orange and grapefruit juice over ice. It ain't for everybody, as it's wicked bitter. I ordered the veggie combo-- falafel, stuffed grape leaves, hummus and baba ganoush. The falafel could have been better, the grape leaves were fairly standard. But the dips were outrageously good and clearly fresh. The humus had a bit of olive oil drizzled on it. The baba ganoush was insanely good, with a smooth texture and a smoky finish I have a hard time defining. And the fresh pita! Forget it, I could eat just that. We invested in the kunafa and it was as promised, like a semi sweet grilled cheese. I enjoyed the Turkish coffee, which smelled delightful and tasted better. All together, dinner for 2 with app, dessert and drinks was less than $50. Decor is beautiful, servers in traditional garb were charming, we will be back. read more

We've been here before and the food was phenomenal. We loved it so much that during this Covid climate, decided to drive 40 minutes into town to pick it up. Unfortunately, it was not worth it this time. Lamb was fattier than before, no chuban salad came with the dinner for four item (even though it was on the menu) and the chicken breast was dry. This is tough to write because I don't want to see any restaurant suffer during this period but they need to update their menu, make sure quality is spot on, and consider substitutes if items are not available. Otherwise, I'm not sure it's worth the drive in to town and the $120 price tag. read more

I had the open buffet there and tried every thing in it, and LOVED everything, the lentil soup, the zucchini soup, the fresh bread, the mussaka, the baba ghanouj, Hummus, the rice, the stuffed red pepper and the kabobs, all exceeded my expectations! This is my absolute favorite restaurant in St. Louis! I don't know where to begin, because everything here from the service to the food to ambiance is excellent. From the moment you walk in, you get a very traditional Turkish vibe. The staff is very friendly and will make great recommendations for you if you ask! I love to start with the apple tea, not only is it super yummy it is served in a very cute tea pot and comes with a very traditional tea cup and saucer. The Adana Kabob is my favorite (and such a good price!) I've also had the pistachio kabob (also very good but a bit pricier) and the vegetarian appetizer is a great sampler to start with if you can't decide on an appetizer because you get to try a little bit of everything. All the dishes are served on very traditional Turkish plates, I've never seen anything like it, you get the whole experience. Last but definitely not least is dessert. The Turkish Kunafa is a MUST try. Order it in the beginning when you order your main dish because it takes some time to cook. After hearing a lot about the authenticity of the food and ambience of Sheesh we finally made it over. The ambience was cool. The food was ok. My falafel was close to burned on the outside, as if the grease was too hot, but the inside was perfect. My family had kabobs, the meat was in the over cooked side and compared to what they ate when living in Turkey it was, ok. Because it is Ramadan paired with Easter weekend they were empty when we arrived just before six. The service was lackluster. When we arrived there was one server who was also acting as hostess, understandable since they were not crowded. It was obvious she was bored so played on her phone which made it hard to get her attention. She also was not very friendly. A second server arrived while we ate and this further distracted the first server. Both were just lacking in the warmth one would expect from a server, especially when bored. Will we go again? If we are in the area, maybe. We definitely will not make a trip just to eat there. read more

Yum! I have been on multiple occasions, and each time I tried a different item from the menu and was always amazed. I feel like I left St. Louis and arrived in Turkey every time I walk through the door. You are greeted and seated with top-notch service. The servers' attire takes and atmosphere takes you on a mystical journey to a faraway land. The music is wonderful, and brass tables, water pitchers make this a one-of-a kind gem you need to check out. They have Turkish coffee and a great selection of scrumptious cuisine on the menu. The pita bread comes out hot and is some of the best I have had to date. I highly recommend the baba ganoush appetizer. I love the Iskender Kebab. Thinly cut grilled lamb over pita bread with melted butter and yogurt...with an amazing tomato sauce. Also terrific is the Alinazik Kebab. Spiced grilled lamb over a mix of smoky eggplant puree and yogurt. The yogurt is not sweet and terrifically complements the dish. This dish comes with their hot pita bread, which I love with the eggplant puree. You also cannot go wrong with the Adana Kebab. 2 skewers of seasoned grilled lamb with very hot chilies, grilled tomato and onion. Eat the chilies with caution, as they are extremely hot, and I enjoy spicy Mexican food. This meal also includes rice and pita bread. I particularly enjoy the grilled tomato and onion. The dish is garnished beautifully with lemon and seasoned wonderfully. Save room for dessert! They have baklava. I would highly recommend Knafeh, which is Turkish sweet cheese pastry soaked in sweet syrup, sprinkled with pistachios. I will be back for more read more

We finally found time for a date night so I chose this place while the wife was out increasing the trade deficit over at our local Target store. It was probably my turn to choose but the "I don't care...whatever" was all the license I needed to pick somewhere new. It turned out to be a great choice too! We had a 6:30 reservation and the place was about half-full when we strolled in. The balance of the tables filled while we had a nice leisurely dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to enjoy the relaxing surroundings and delicious food. Their tables are copper platters and the chairs are like individual sofas such that it feels a lot like you're lounging your way through dinner. Very pleasant! We started with a half & half appetizer of hummus and baba ganoj. The hummus was smooth and beautifully flavored with just a hint of garlic and included a handful of chickpeas on top. The baba ganoj had a little more body to it and that wonderful smoky flavor that eggplant develops when slowly roasted. They sprinkled a handful of pomegranate seeds on that side of the plate and also dusted it with that red ground spice blend. Along side was a nice, warm bread product. Not so much a pita but more similar to the bread used to wrap up a schwarma, but larger. Tear off a piece of bread, scoop up a little of either one and enjoy bite after delicious bite until gone. For dinner we decided to split an order of their signature dish...basically skewers of lamb with coarsely ground pistachios mixed in and served over a bed of chopped fresh parsley with grilled onion and tomato along side. This dish looked large enough to split because it came with 3 skewers whereas most of their dishes only include two skewers. The meat was juicy and flavorful with a nice charred taste to make it bring back memories of eating kebabs in the middle east. More of the bread came with the dish too. For dessert we decided to share the baklava. Three two-bite pieces with entire halves of pistachios and a nice honey flavor. Not a lot of rosewater flavor but maybe that's just a Greek thing? We also had Turkish coffee and a pot of sweet apple tea (note for next time...order the tea on arrival and enjoy through dinner instead). Why only 4 stars? Mainly because the service was severely lacking and there were a couple of significant missteps. The appetizer plates had not been properly cleaned and had food residue on them. The rice we were told came with our entree showed up at the very end of the meal and had to be requested multiple times. Finally, our waiter's knowledge of the menu was significantly lacking. All easily resolved and I'm hoping to bump them up to 5 stars at my next visit. It probably won't be too long either because we both loved our food. read more

In town for a work conference and wanted something other than BBQ. Sorry, St. Louis...I'm from the south and we're pretty partial to our own style of doing the 'que. We picked this place based on Yelp reviews and pictures, and were not disappointed! First off, the atmosphere is so rad. We were seated in a large "tent" in the back with gorgeous lamps and cushions and copper trays and serving ware. There was a couple musicians playing and singing traditional music on a small stage in the front, and the staff welcomed us warmly. We settled in and ordered meza and a trio of dips for appetizers. They brought it out with fresh, warm bread and it was DELICIOUS. We shared the sampler kebab platter that came with chicken, lamb, veggies, and two types of rice. Again, so good. The lamb was really flavorful and tender. The menu said it would feed 4, but all 5 of us ate until we were stuffed and still had leftovers. We also ordered kunafa for dessert. Y'all. KUNAFA. I can't describe it and do it justice...but you need it in your life. Gooey cheese covered in fine shreds of pastry, topped with crushed pistachio and drizzled with a light, sweet syrup. It was divine. So impressed with the quality, service, and value of the meal, not to mention the charming atmosphere and friendly staff. Next time we're in St. Louis, we'll be back! read more

I have loved this restaurant for years. The decor is so cute and the food is always delish. After tonight I would never recommend nor eat there ever again. I was embarrassed for the owner for the service. I ordered the Apple tea, the waitress never put my order in. We ordered appetizers and the server threw it on the table, when we asked for small plates she acted as if we were bothering her. When getting our main courses she didn't even bring one person meal while I sat without a fork for over 5 minutes. When asking for the missing meal and a fork we were once again bothering the server. We should have known better at this point to ask for more water because once again bothering the server. The table next to us had to get up and go get their dessert from the kitchen themselves. Thankfully we were able to figure out where they kept the extra toilet paper because the womens restroom ran out because it would have taken 30 minutes to get that. The shank was considerably better than the shish kebab. the shish did not look anything like the picture on the menu. it came with white rice and meat only. pretty dry to enjoy. no tomato sauce as shown on the menu and was missing the homemade bread (which was served later after we asked in the form of flat bread not fluffy Turkish yeast bread). the owner brought some sauce after we asked. the pastry was good. tried the first item featured on the menu. it's basically mozzarella covered in shredded filo and smothered in simple syrup. The food is significantly overpriced for its quality or the service. I have to say the owner was super nice and without him, if only relying on the wait staff, this would have been a pretty unpleasant experience. (a server told us the red sauce on the kebab in the picture was a "MISPRINT" :) Also no red wine or any alcohol is served. read more

Visited Sheesh back in October with a group for a project for school. Our focus was on culture, and -wow- did Sheesh give off a very distinct cultural vibe! The seats and tables were all handcrafted and imported from Turkey, if my memory serves correctly. It felt as if I was eating in a different country. The food was tasty and fairly priced. The service was quick, given the size of our party, and was very courteous when fielding requests and dietary restrictions from us. He even split the check correctly, which amazed me! This is my second visit. The ambiance is top notch with Brass tables and cutlery. To add to the Turkish feel the waiters wear traditional jackets and hats. Service was a complete miss this time. Our appetizers , Gozleme and Kibbeh came out ice cold on the inside.To their credit, they replaced both the dishes. The server was not paying attention to our table and had to be reminded to give plates, clear table etc. Skip the Gozleme, their version is a cheese and spinach filled empanada. In Turkey, Gozleme is stuffed flatbread which is hand rolled and cooked in a tandoor like oven. Kibbeh was absolutely delicious. For main course we had the shrimp platter, combo platter, Chicken doner platter. The chicken doner came with fries and flatbread. It was dry and unflavorful. On the other hand, Shrimp platter was tasty. It came with Baba ghanouj(yum) and Biryani rice. In the combo platter,we got the Adana and shush tawook. Adana was my absolute favorite. For dessert we got the Kunafe(it takes 15 min to prepare). It had a cheese filling with mozzarella like stretchiness which I did not like, while the coating was shredded phyllo. Each time we've been we've had to flag down the waitress to be seated after standing for 5+ minutes with no one else waiting, and when we were to order even beverages, we'd been seated for at least 20 minutes. This may be a misunderstanding of mine from cultural differences and if so someone please let me know. Otherwise, we have been laughed by our waitress. The appetizers were great. We had the four dolma and the meeza (may have spelled that incorrectly). I had the pistachio kebab, which was ground lamb and pistachio. It was good, but it was basically two mini meat loaves with nothing served with it except a stewed tomato. Some rice or something as a side would have been nice. Also, I ordered a Diet Coke and it was served in a mini coke bottle.... which seemed kind of strange and definitely not worth the price of a soda. Overall the food was good, with the appetizers being my favorite. The service was very mediocre. We sat for a very long time before we were even given water. Also, at the beginning they asked we wanted separate checks (two couples). We said that we did, but they forgot to do it and told us they'd just split it down the middle. This wasn't too big of a deal for us, but it was frustrating that they asked, we answered and they still didn't do it. The staff is very nice, it just seems really unorganized. I think this place may deserve a 2nd try for me but, the first try was pretty bad. Everything started out so great! We walked in to an awesome room with authentic decor and music. Right away I was pumped and excited to see what they had to offer. To preface, I'm half middle eastern and the son of a chef. I know a bit about food and I really wanted to like this place. We started off with Turkish coffee which was spot on. For starters we shared the hummas and cheese bureks. The hummas was probably the best I've had here in the US. It was light, creamy and delicious. The bureks were just mozzarella sticks wrapped in pastry dough. It could have used a fresh tomato dipping sauce or something. After out appetizers we waited over an hour for our main courses. I got a lamb dish with stewed lamb and sauce on top of cut up pita bread. You would think after waiting over an hour, everything would be hot. my food was room temp. My brother got the ground lamp kabobs on top of eggplant. The flavor was nice but it was dry and also warm at best. This may be hard to believe but, after waiting an hour for dinner and getting cold food, you would think I would have the opportunity to let my server know to either heat it up or send it back. Our server did not return again until dinner was over and that was to drop off to go boxes and bring the check. He never came back to ask how everything tasted or if we needed anything else. Not once! We were there for over 2 hours and nobody came to our table to check on us after the entrees were delivered. The menu is pretty big and if they are able to make hummas that would rival my mother's ,I'm sure they have better food than what I experienced. The table setting and how the food was served made you feel like you were in another country.Along with the big flat bread. It was perfect. The turkish apple tea was served authentically as well. For desert I had the Knafeh and it was delicious- definitely a top choice! The service was attentive, kind, informative and on top of everything. This place was very good. The decor and atmosphere was spot on and very elegant and authentic. It added a lot of character to the place. The waiter staff was very polite, helpful, and humble. My boyfriend and I ordered the appetizer combo to start which included chilled and homemade hummus, baba ghanoush, and a thicker cream cheese like dip and naan. It was very good and fresh. For our main course, we ordered chicken biryani (decent) and Musakka (which was incredible)!! Portions were just the right size for two people, and for a decent price. I'm not an expert in Middle Eastern cuisine, but this place was good. Really, really good. I brought 4 picky children into this place, no idea how I convinced them to try Turkish food when they rarely branch out from chicken strips and macaroni. We visited the City Museum, went swimming, had Gelato (highly recommend the Gelateria also on Grand Ave). Literally for the first hour of the drive home, the kids talked about nothing but Sheesh. "I'm never eating anything but Turkish food again." "I don't want to brush my teeth for the rest of the day so I can still taste it." Etcetera. Food was fabulous.
